On this week's show an all-star team of super agents join Julia to gab including guest host Amy Nicholson, film critic for the Los Angeles Times. Their first mission: Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, the supposed final installment of the Tom Cruise action juggernaut. Like Cruise on to a vintage biplane, Dana jumps on the call to discuss all the film's death-defying stunts, clunky exposition, and lasting cultural impact. Next, they're joined by Slate senior editor Rebecca Onion to dish on Sirens, Netflix's pastel-hued dramedy starring Meghan Fahey, Milly Alcock, and Julianne Moore. Finally, Slate's music critic Carl Wilson arrives to grapple with the hugely successful, but critically polarizing, new Morgan Wallen album I'm the Problem. In an exclusive Plus segment, Amy, fresh from the Riviera, shares with Julia and Dana her favorite films and moments from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Endorsements: Amy: The 19th season of the British game show Taskmaster, wherein a group of comedians are made to do impossible tasks by host Greg Davies. Carl: The Mock Trial-centric live episode of the musical improv podcast Off Book, and the podcast itself while you're at it.  Julia: The quintessentially American, summertime experience of eating a hotdog on a ferry as well as the 2011 film Money Ball. You can also hear more from Amy on her podcast Unspooled and from Carl on his substack Crritic!.  Want more Culture Gabfest? Subscribe to Slate Plus to unlock weekly bonus episodes. Mike Love is a singer, songwriter, and co-founder of the Beach Boys. In 1961, Love, alongside his cousins Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, and their friend Al Jardine, defined the California sound of the 1960s as the Beach Boys, co-writing hits including “Good Vibrations,” “California Girls,” and “Fun, Fun, Fun,” while weaving the themes of youth, surfing, and romance into their songs. He was one of the band's vocalists and lyricists for the entire career of the Beach Boys; Love played a crucial role in the group's vocal arrangements, adding a popular doo-wop sound and R&B influences. An inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he went on to revamp the Beach Boys in 2011, announcing the band's 50th Anniversary Tour, release five solo albums, and publish an autobiography titled Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy. ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Vivo Barefoot http://vivobarefoot.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA25' ------ LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Athletic Nicotine https://www.athleticnicotine.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Sign up to receive Tetragrammaton Transmissions https://www.tetragrammaton.com/join-newsletter

This week's guest, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Evan Taylor (Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Loantaka Records), brings us The Beach Boys' 21st studio album - and the last one under the group's name to be written and produced solely by troubled leader Brian Wilson - 'The Beach Boys Love You'. Released in 1977, this strange, at-times childlike collection of songs sounded like nothing else the band had done up until then. With raspier-than-usual vocals from the Wilson brothers and Brian's newfound infatuation with the Moog synthesizer, it left many fans/critics confused at the time but has since been recognized for presaging both synth-pop and new wave.  Songs discussed in this episode: Good Vibrations - Brian Wilson (Live on SNL, 1976); Distant Star - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Jerry Harrison); Take 5 - Bernie Worrell; What Have They Done To My Funk - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Bootsy Collins, Michael Moon Reuben, Ouiwey Collins, Buckethead); Be My Baby - The Ronettes; Let Us Go On This Way, Hey, Little Tomboy, Roller Skating Child, Mona, Johnny Carson, Good Time - The Beach Boys; Good Time, Shyin' Away - American Spring; Honkin' Down The Highway, Ding Dang, Solar System - The Beach Boys; Solar System - Alex Chilton; The Night Was So Young, I'll Bet He's Nice - The Beach Boys; Shoot The Curl - The Honeys; Let's Put Our Hearts Together, I Wanna Pick You Up, Airplane, Love Is A Woman - The Beach Boys; Wave From The WOOniverse - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Miho Hatori)

GERRY BECKLEY: Crafting AMERICA's Iconic Hits

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2024 52:00

Has Gerry Beckley retired? Does he still sing with America? Who influenced the band America? All these questions answered this week. Gerry Beckley is a singer/songwriter best known as a founding member of the classic soft rock outfit America. Alongside bandmates Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek, Gerry first gained recognition for hits like 1971's "Horse with No Name," 1972's "Ventura Highway," 1975's "Sister Golden Hair," and others. Though he and Dewey have continued to perform as America until recenlty, Gery has also recorded under his own name since the mid '90s, releasing such mellow, well-crafted albums as 2022's Aurora and 2024's self -titled album Gerry Beckley. Gerry was born in Texas in 1952. He grew up as the son of an American air force officer and a British mother. Interested in music from a young age, he began playing piano at age three and later added guitar. By the time he was ten, Gerry was a promising musician playing in the surf rock band the Vanguards. He had also come under the influence of The Beatles and other British Invasion-era bands as a result of spending his summer vacations in England. In 1967, Gerry moved with his family to London after his father took over as commander at the United States Air Force base. It was while attending High School that he befriended classmates Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek. The three quickly formed a band and began performing at a local all-ages club, playing covers by bands like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young and others. The trio eventually caught the attention of a local promoter and producer, who recorded them and helped them get a record deal. In 1971, they released the single, "A Horse with No Name." A hit the world over, the single propelled the band to early success. With America, Gerry Beckley enjoyed decades of popularity, releasing over 20 albums, touring globally, and penning numerous songs that helped to define both the soft rock and adult contemporary radio formats. Gerry Beckley began to release successful solo material in 1995 with Van Go Gan. The album featured Gerry backed by a bevy of longtime friends and collaborators, including Dewey Bunnell, trumpeter Mark Isham, the Eagles' Timonthy B. Schmit and others. That album was followed by a remix album. Away from America, Gerry next delivered 2000's LIke A Brother- a collaboration with Chicago singer/keyboardist Robert Lamm and the Beach Boys' Carl WIlson who died from lung cancer after completing the album in 1998. The record featured a mix of originals from each member of the band , as well as a cover of Harry Wilson's "Without You" In 2006, Beckley returned with his third solo album, Horizontal Fall. The compilation album Happy Hour was released in 2009. SInce then many solos albums have followed. Gerry has recently married and moved to Sydney Australia where he spends six months of the year. He has resigned from touring with America to concentrate on furthering his solo career. His latest self titled solo album is being touted as his best ever. Gerry plays the bulk of the instruments but gets help from a core group of players that includes former Chicago bassist Jason Scheff, guitarist Steve Fekete, drummers Brian Young and Ryland Steen along with backing vocalists Jeff Larson and Brian Eichenberger. Nick Lane and Matt Combs, also longtime musical fellow travelers, arranged horn and string parts, respectively. It's a collection of 12 original tunes featuring the singles "Red and Blue" and "Well Worn Shoes." Gerry Beckley joins us this week to walk us through his incredible career. Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! A few weeks ago, my husband Carl and I hosted a virtual live girls night of sorts with the incredible crew of women who helped me launch my new book, Create A Life You Love. Nothing was off the table — we had them send in any and all questions they had for us, and we answered as many of them as we could.  We made sure to record that Q&A session, and I'm so glad, because now we get to share it with you.  In this episode, we're talking about marriage, dating, pursuing your dreams, and we'll be answering a few questions about moving to Spain — what that looks like and what we're most excited about!  This was such a fun conversation to have, especially with mine and Carl's 10 year wedding anniversary coming up in early July!  So, without further ado, let's dive into my conversation with my husband, Carl Wilson! On this week's show, the hosts begin by dissecting The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth chapter in the Apes franchise. Set “many generations” in the future, the latest installment (directed by Wes Ball and starring Owen Teague) is an undeniably well-crafted summer blockbuster – but does it achieve the level of complexity and thought its predecessors did? (Read Dana's review for Slate for further analysis.) Then, it's onto John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA, a six-part live Netflix special that aired during the streaming giant's comedy festival. The conceit is thus: Netflix is a Joke attracts the best comedians in the world to LA, John Mulaney interviews them. But the final product is much stranger than that description, both a rejection and reinvention of the tired late-night talk show format, in which Mulaney interviews celebrities and non-celebrities, airs sketches, and delivers long monologues on the character of LA. Is Everybody's in LA chaotic and sloppy, or a ragged delight? Our panel discusses. Finally, the trio is joined by Slate's music critic, Carl Wilson, to eulogize the legendary musician and “producing engineer” (his preferred title) Steve Albini. Known for recording albums with Joanna Newsom, Nirvana, and the Pixies, among others, Albini considered himself a documentarian of sound and a technical expert, and brought his punk-rock ethic to everything he did. Read Steve Albini's essay, “The Problem with Music” and his letter to Nirvana. Backstage during this past weekend's Stagecoach festival at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA, Audacy's KSON San Diego morning hosts John & Tammy were joined by The Beach Boys' Mike Love, and his partner in sound, John Stamos. As fans are well aware, actor John Stamos has been occasionally performing on the drums and various other percussion instruments with The Beach Boys since way back in 1985, three years later even appearing in their "Kokomo" music video. “He actually played drums in a three-piece band in Orange County, California before he became Blackie on 'General Hospital,'” Mike Love explains. “Then matriculated to ‘America's favorite Uncle.' It's not Uncle Sam. It's Uncle Jesse.” Although, Stamos argues, “I thought it was Uncle Fester.” Watching The Beach Boys perform at an event like Stagecoach, you can see how the group has touched so many lives over the years, with young and not-so-young fans singing along to the classics right beside each other. Truly the definition of "American music," Stamos believes “when the whole world wanted to be us, it was because of the imagery and the tableau that Mike painted with his lyrics about cars and girls, but more importantly, optimism and 'Camelot,' and you know, there was really hope. I think what I love most about hearing the music now -- getting the honor to play it with him -- is that the people need these songs now more than they did, even when they wrote them.” “The music bypasses the brand and goes straight to the heart,” John adds. “That's why the age group is so vast, I think.” “It's a total blessing,” says Love. “What we do for a living was a family hobby that started singing. We started singing together with my cousins and my uncles and aunts and everything and friends and family. We used to literally Christmas carol around our neighborhood and then we'd have a big Christmas-time feast.” ”It started in the family, harmony between my cousins, Brian, Dennis, and Carl [Wilson] were my first cousins and we got together,” Love continues. “The first memory of Brian singing was on my grandmother Wilson's lap at Christmas. He sang ‘Danny Boy' and you know, his voice was just so amazing. We'd listen to the radio together and we would get kicked out of the house because we played our music too loud.” “But my mom, she woke us up to her opera music, it was murder to go to school. We had a grand piano, organ, and harp in the living room. How could you not get influenced?” he asks. John Stamos' longtime love affair with the group is no secret, and becoming their unofficial but now official member is still a point of contention for the actor. “You know, when I talk about myself in The Beach Boys, it's mainly just praising them,” he argues. “It's certainly Mike who I feel is one of the most underrated musicians on the planet. He didn't get the credit that he deserved -- I'm not kissing his a** just because we got a big show tonight and he's gonna let me do a few extra songs.” “My first concert was The Beach Boys and I remember thinking ‘God, I hope that he comes out and says, ‘Our drummer broke his fingers.' He's brought so much joy and love to my family and my friends and I'm just so grateful to Mike,” Stamos adds. “It's all about love and harmony and positivity,” Mike says, “and John brings all that and more to the stage -- and he plays drums damn well.” Don't miss John & Tammy's full conversation with Mike Love and John Stamos above -- and be sure to catch a wave with The Beach Boys on their Endless Summer Gold Tour! Stuffed with 31 tracks, the two-part album is a departure from the billionaire pop star's otherwise perfectly crafted oeuvre: it's messy and drippy, and at times, manic and frenetic. Is this secretly a cry for help? And more importantly, when did she find the time to record this thing? Then, the three explore Fallout, a post-apocalyptic drama series adapted from the extremely popular role-playing video game of the same name. Executive produced by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, Person of Interest) and streaming on Prime Video, Fallout certainly achieves a high level of immersive world-building, but do the stories and characters fare the same? Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! At the moment we're in between seasons here on the show. But while we're waiting for our next official season to begin, we thought this would be a great time to pull some of our favorite episodes out of the Girls Night archive. This is the perfect time to catch up on episodes you might have missed, or listen again to old favorites. So, as I'm continuing to share past Girls Night conversations, we have something super special and a bit different for you in today's episode! Today, my sweet friend Marri is hopping into the host chair, and interviewing me! But she's not just interviewing me. I'm not in that guest chair alone. Sitting right next to me is my sweet husband, Carl Wilson. That's right, we have a boy here at Girls Night, but I promise, he's worth the invite. I wanted to share this episode because this week is mine and Carl's 9-year wedding anniversary! I cannot BELIEVE It's been nine years! And so in honor of that, I wanted to go back to the beginning and share our story of how we met, started dating, knew each other was the one, and more! So that's what we're talking about today. In our conversation today, Marri is asking me and Carl all of the questions we're asked most often by my sweet readers and listeners — questions we rarely get a chance to answer! We're going to be sharing how we met, all about our first date, how we knew each other was the one. We'll be sharing our best dating advice, our best advice for how to prepare for a really great marriage, and so much more. This conversation was so much fun. Carl is hilarious and so so wise, I cannot wait for you to get to know him better.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
