We're taking a bit of a pivot here at the podcast factory with this one, pinching from the season-opening episode of Writer's Bone, our flagship podcast at the Writer's Bone Podcast Network. “As Told To” producer and Writer's Bone host and founder Daniel Ford featured a conversation with the writing team of Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, co-creators of the enchantingly poignant HBO series “Somebody Somewhere,” starring actress/comedian Bridget Everett—a conversation that brushed up against so many relatable aspects of collaborative writing that we decided to rebroadcast it (to re-podcast it?) here. “Somebody Somewhere” ended its three-season run in December, shortly after the creators sat with Daniel Ford to discuss the series—hailed by The Los Angeles Times as “epic television”—and we were charmed by their conversation, inviting listeners behind the scenes to reflect on how the show came about, and the singular place it now holds in the annals of bittersweet television. Paul Thureen is a founder and co-Artistic Director of The Debate Society, a Brooklyn-based theater company. He received an OBIE Award for his performance in the company's Blood Play. Hannah Bos, also a founder and co-founder of the company, received a Drama Desk Award for her performance in the Signature Theater Company's production of Will Eno's The Open House. Together, they have written for “Mozart in the Jungle” and “High Maintenance,” and developed pilots for HBO, FOX, Amazon and Paramount. “This has been a dream come true,” Hannah reflected on the duo's “Somebody Somewhere” run as the series came to a close. “It was a dream that they made the pilot. It was a dream that they made the first season, the second season, the third season. And it was a dream that we made it with really fun, good people. So I hope we can do it again.” Paul's reflections were a little less…well, reflective, as he shared what it was like to write for a group of midwestern-ish characters who weren't used to talking about their feelings. “If it gets a little too real,” he said, of the pain and heartache that could often be found at the show's core, “then you have to make a fart joke.” Indeed.

It took an escalation in Iran-Israel tensions and the optimism generated by the Chinese government's stimulus efforts to lift oil out of its three-month downward trajectory. Nevertheless, sustaining bullish price momentum in oil has proven to be a high maintenance task: without additional catalysts, the ‘war' and ‘stimulus' premiums have been prone to fading. While possible, Israel is likely to avoid Iranian oil infrastructure. Conversely, the rising expectations for RMB 2 trn fiscal stimulus are likely to be met. Friendship is a beautiful thing, but let's be real—some friendships can be more work than others. We've all had those friends who need constant check-ins, and then there are the ones you don't talk to for weeks (or months) and pick up right where you left off like no time has passed. Both types of friendships have their pros and cons, and understanding where they fall on the maintenance spectrum can save you a lot of headaches. Let's dive into what makes a friendship high-maintenance versus low-maintenance, and how you can navigate both in a way that keeps your friendships thriving. It was in 2018 that the three-piece band Robotic Hawks came together and, in that time, they've taken many a stage and radio show and, in this episode, we're going to hear all about it! Band members Tyler Pollard (Vocals/Bass), Brian Sturk (Drums) and Shawn Doherty (Guitar) give us the whole backstory—how the band came together through a Craigslist ad and some of their favorite venues over the years. This includes some of Curtis and I's most beloved venues, the Middle East and the Sinclair. We talk about how the band's style has evolved with the release of their new EP “All Business” as well as their unique style and how it's been perceived over the years. We also go into the collaborative process behind their songwriting. Shawn, Tyler and Brian give us a look as to what's next for Robotic Hawks and we highlight some upcoming shows. Opening the episode is an excerpt from “High Maintenance” and closing things out is “Wishing Well,” both of which are from the new album.

This is a replay from 7/11/22 where we talk about how we sometimes try to be "low maintenance" because you think a partner will not accept or love you if you require work. We should never settle for the bare minimum efforts in a relationship because you have just gotten used to what that feels like. Require that both of you are continually nurturing and building on the relationship. Ask for what you need. Ask for what you want. Ask for what you deserve. Be high maintenance. André Ward never played house when he was little, but he always played “New York City Apartment”, and with impressive Broadway credits, he can fully say he's finally living in the midst of his dream. Growing up a “talkative” child, his teacher recommended he might need to find a way to work out some of his excess energy, and so they sent him to a children's theater company and hasn't stopped performing since. He also delves into the challenges of transitioning between theater and film, highlighting the differences in performance styles required for each. Currently playing as Toulouse-Lautrec in "Moulin Rouge! The Musical," Andre takes glee in the opportunity to showcase both his comedic and emotional range. He opens up about his fears and aspirations regarding directing and writing, his dream of playing a sci-fi character, and why he continues to strive for balance between work and his personal life. André Ward is a seasoned Broadway actor with an impressive Broadway resume dating back over 24 years or so, beginning with “Saturday Night Fever”, “Xanadu”, “Rock of Ages”, “Something Rotten”, and “Escape to Margaritaville”. He has five national tours under his belt, including performing as the leading player in “Pippin”, as well as numerous regional credits. His TV and film credits include “Masters of None”, “Broad City”, “Elementary,” and “High Maintenance”. He can be seen now as Toulouse-Lautrec in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” on Broadway, which just celebrated its 5th Anniversary. Dinner party tips. Healthy meals with Trader Joe's ingredients. Stories involving Martha Stewart, Sufjan Stevens, and Sia?This conversation with Jess Damuck has all of the above and more, and I'm bringing it to you a day after the launch of her gorgeous new book, Health Nut: A Feel-Good Cookbook. If you've seen Salad Freak, you know how beautiful Jess' work is. Which makes sense considering she spent years working directly with – and learning from – Martha Stewart.Amazingly, Jess wrote not one but two cookbooks in the past year. And when we caught up in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago, we talked about both of them, plus:* Making 47 plaster sculptures for Sia (really!)* What she learned working for Martha Stewart and Bon Appétit* Minimizing the number of dishes we use in meals* Embracing living in L.A. and hosting artists and entertainers* Why “health” can be a loaded word and what it means to her* The tofu stir fry she cooks when she doesn't feel like cookingLinks:* Health Nut: A Feel-Good Cookbook* Salad Freak: Recipes to Feed a Healthy Obsession* Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends (Benny Blanco book out April 2024)* Jess' Instagram* Smoked soy sauce* Kettle Soba Cha buckwheat tea* High Maintenance, the HBO show Jess' partner Ben created and starred in* Dave, the FX show Ben directed* Ram Dass' spiritual sanctuary in MauiGet full access to What To Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking at whattocook.substack.com/subscribe Get full access to What To Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking at whattocook.substack.com/subscribe
