Explore how students are using simple mindful breathing practices to navigate stress, stay grounded, and support their classmates.Summary: Classrooms often are confronted with difficult topics that can leave students overwhelmed and anxious. In this episode of The Science of Happiness, we highlight how college student Evelyn Mata brought calm to herself and peers during an Immigration Studies class through simple collective breathing practices. How to Do Box Breathing: Sit comfortably: Find a quiet spot and focus on your breath, keeping a relaxed posture.  Inhale (4 counts): Breathe in slowly through your nose, letting the air fill your belly and chest. Keep the pace steady, not strained for a count of four.  Hold (4 counts): Pause gently at the top of the inhale. This isn't a tense hold, just a moment of stillness to let the body register calm. Hold your breath for four slow counts.  Exhale (4 counts): Release the breath through your nose or mouth in a smooth, even flow. Imagine tension leaving the body as the breath moves out for a count of four, emptying your lungs.  Hold (4 counts): Let yourself rest briefly in the empty space before the next inhale. This completes the “box.” Repeat: Continue this cycle for several minutes, or for 3-4 rounds, until you feel calmer. Stop sooner if you feel lightheaded; return to natural breathing when you're done. How a Teen and Her Mom Turned Breathwork Into a Book for Kids. This episode shares the story of how a teen and her mom turned breathwork into a book for kids. Inhale, Exhale, Shoot is a beautifully illustrated children's book born from a mindful mother-daughter collaboration. Co-written by integrative psychiatrist Dr. Holly MacKenna and her 13-year-old daughter, Maeve Graffanini, the book is a gentle guide to teaching kids mindfulness through the language of basketball, breath, and big emotions. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or someone passionate about helping children regulate emotions, this conversation offers a fresh, creative way to connect. It's a powerful reminder that when we pause to breathe, we open the door to presence, empathy, and resilience for children and ourselves. We also explore how creative projects, especially ones shared across generations, can become meaningful tools for healing, growth, and impact. Pearls of Wisdom: Teaching kids to breathe through big feelings is one of the most powerful lifelong gifts we can offer. What looks like anger in children is often something deeper like fear, anxiety, or overwhelm. Mindfulness helps us meet the root emotion. Creative metaphors, like basketball, can make mindfulness more accessible, relatable, and fun for kids. Co-creating a book strengthened Holly and Maeve's relationship and helped them navigate life's significant transitions together. Mindfulness isn't just a solo practice but something we can model, share, and co-create with those we love. Reflection Questions: When a child in your life has a big emotion, how do you usually respond? Could a breath shift the interaction? What projects or practices bring you closer to your children or your inner child? How might you integrate creative mindfulness practices into your family or classroom? Stay for the mindful moment at the end, where you'll be invited to enjoy a few breaths with us.     If you would like to donate a copy of Inhale, Exhale, Shoot to a child who needs it, you can do so this month for just $15 at susanschadtpress.com. Maeve and her school's service club are hand-delivering these books to shelters in New Orleans—mindfulness in action. If you would like to order a copy as a holiday gift, the book is available on Amazon or at susanschadtpress.com.  For those craving a reset and deeper embodiment of these practices, join me for a retreat where mindfulness, rest, and healing come alive in community. Upcoming dates are at www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreats. To bring these kinds of mindful, compassionate conversation to your organization, team, or conference, Dr. Mahoney offers keynote talks and workshops on emotional awareness, leadership, and well-being. In this episode, I guide you through a simple but profoundly calming lengthening-the-exhale practice. It's under ten minutes, yet it can make a significant shift in your body and mind by helping you down-regulate, settle, and soften states of wiredness or vigilance. I walk you through noticing your breath, tuning into where it moves, and observing its natural rhythm before gently encouraging the exhale to lengthen. As I lead you through this process, I highlight how to stay within ease, how the inhale naturally responds to the exhale, and what to watch for so the practice remains supportive rather than straining. I also share considerations for practicing safely, recognizing signs of tension, and building your breathwork capacity with honesty and awareness. This is a practice you can return to anytime you need grounding or a moment to reconnect with yourself.

Rest is not the same as restoration, and your nervous system can feel the difference. If you're exhausted from “getting through the day,” this conversation is for you. In this episode, Tara, Maria, and Elizabeth unpack the difference between rest, relaxation, and true restoration and why your nervous system desperately needs all three. They explore what burnout really feels like in mid-life, especially for women juggling motherhood, marriage, careers, emotional labor, and the invisible mental load.  They also introduce Exhale, their in-person one-day retreat in Annapolis designed to help you feel safe, seen, supported, and truly restored alongside other women. In this episode: Understand the crucial difference between rest, relaxation, and restoration—and why only one truly rebuilds your capacity for “vigor and health.” Recognize the signs of a depleted nervous system and how distraction and over-responsibility keep you stuck in survival mode. Let us know what you enjoy about the show!If you've ever felt yanked from one moment into the next, this guided reentry is your reset. We slow down the space between chapters so you can release the residue of what just happened and choose, on purpose, how you want to enter what comes next. Through gentle breathwork, grounding cues, and clear language, we create a small but powerful pause—one that returns scattered attention back to the body and helps the nervous system trade urgency for presence. We start by settling where we are: softening shoulders and jaw, feeling the support beneath us, and letting each exhale lengthen. From there, we acknowledge where we've been without judgment—whether it was a hard meeting, a busy day, or emotions only you could feel. Using imagery like dust lifting from a windowsill as sunlight moves in, we let go of what we don't need while trusting that the insights worth keeping will stay. This isn't escapism; it's integration.Once we've found our center, we pair breath with simple mantras: Inhale, I come home. Exhale, I let go. Inhale, I gather. Exhale, I release. The rhythm anchors attention and invites clarity. Then we ask the pivotal question: How do I want to enter what comes next? Maybe the answer is steadiness, curiosity, softer edges, or clearer boundaries. We imagine crossing a threshold carrying only what serves and leaving the rest with kindness, reclaiming choice in a world that rarely pauses.Walk away feeling present, connected, and ready for whatever's next. If this practice helps you create calmer transitions, share it with someone who rushes between moments, subscribe for more mindful resets, and leave a review to tell us what energy you're bringing forward.Support the show

Hey Nurse friend, Take a deep breath. You made it here, and that alone shows how much your soul is craving a moment of peace. If you are listening as a nurse who is exhausted—emotionally, physically, spiritually—I want you to know this: You are not alone. You're not failing. And your feelings are valid. Christmas can feel heavy when you're the one holding everyone else together. But today, you get to be held. This breath prayer is your reset. A moment to slow down, reconnect, and remember the truth: Emmanuel—God with us. God with you. Wherever you are—maybe driving home from a shift, on your couch, or getting ready for work—let your shoulders soften. Unclench your jaw.Feel your breath settle. Let's take one deep inhale… And a long, slow exhale. Again… Inhale peace… Exhale tension. Your nervous system is safe here. Your body is allowed to rest here. verse: In Matthew 1:23 it says: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and They will call Him Emmanuel, which means God with us.” Talk to God in this time- make this your prayer. Notice what thoughts come in these 3 minutes, what feelings arise, what each word feels like as it comes out of your mouth. Meditate on these words. If possible, place one hand on your heart. 3 min : Inhale: Emmanuel Exhale: You are with me Please share this episode with everyone who needs a little more peace this season!

Welcome back, everyone, to the Imagen Golf Podcast! I am Daniel Guest, and I am so fired up for today's episode. If you are listening to this right now, I need you to do me a favor. I need you to take a deep breath. Exhale. And I need you to mentally delete the last five YouTube videos you watched about "supinating the wrist" or "hitting Position 6."Because today, we are going to stop the craziness.(Music fades to a subtle background rhythm)I see it every day on the lesson tee. A student walks up, and they look exhausted before they've even hit a ball. Their brain is spinning. They're thinking about ten different positions. "Daniel, is my elbow at 45 degrees?" "Daniel, am I shallowing the shaft enough?" "Daniel, what about P4?"Stop. Just stop.Golf is a hard game, yes. But it is not as complicated as the industry wants you to believe. We have turned a stick-and-ball game into advanced calculus, and it is killing your scores.Today, we are going back to basics. Not "boring" basics—essential basics. I want you to forget the 10-step diagrams and focus on the 4 Pillars of a Great Golf Swing. If you nail these four things, you can play this game forever, and you can play it well.Pillar 1: Proper SetupPillar Number One. This is non-negotiable. Proper Setup. You wouldn't build a house on a swamp, right? So why are you trying to hit a golf ball with your feet touching and your back hunched over like you're reading a text message? The setup is the only part of the swing you have 100% control over. The ball isn't moving. No one is tackling you.Grip: Get your hands on the club comfortably so the face is square.Alignment: Aim where you want to go.Posture: Get athletic. Bend from the hips, not the waist. If your setup is bad, your swing becomes a recovery mission the second you take the club back. But if your setup is solid, you've done 50% of the work before the club even moves. That's free money!Pillar 2: Logical BackswingNotice I didn't say "Perfect Backswing." I didn't say "Adam Scott's Backswing." I said a Logical Backswing. What is the logic? The logic is simply to get the club up and around your body so you have room to hit the ball with force. That's it!People get obsessed with "hitting positions." They freeze-frame their video and say, "Oh no, my clubface is 2 degrees shut." Who cares?! Does your backswing put you in a position to deliver the club to the ball?Did you turn your shoulders?Did you shift your weight? Is the club behind you?Great. That's logical. You are loaded. You are ready to fire. Stop trying to paint a Picasso in the air and just load the catapult.Pillar 3: Solid ContactThis is the Holy Grail. Solid Contact. The golf ball does not know what your swing looks like. It doesn't know if you're wearing the latest gear. It only knows one thing: Impact. You can have the ugliest swing in the world—look at Jim Furyk or Matthew Wolff—but if you hit the back of the ball first, flush on the face, the ball goes straight and far.We spend so much time worrying about how we look getting to the ball that we forget the job is to hit the ball. Are you hitting the center of the face? Are you brushing the grass after the ball?If the answer is yes, you are a golfer. I don't care if your left arm is bent. I don't care if you lift your heel. If the contact is solid, the swing works. Period.Pillar 4: A Natural Follow-ThroughAnd finally, the pillar that holds it all together: A Natural Follow-Through.I see so many amateurs who hit the ball and then... stop. They chop at it. They flinch. Or they try to force themselves into this perfect PGA Tour finish where their back is twisted like a pretzel and they're in pain.Your follow-through is a reaction to what happened before it. It's the braking system. If you swung with speed (which we want), your body has to rotate through to slow the club down safely.Let the momentum pull you around.Finish balanced on that lead leg.Let the club wrap around you.If you are "steering" the club, you have no follow-through. If you are "swinging" the club, the follow-through happens naturally. It's the signature on the check you just wrote.Setup. Backswing. Contact. Follow-through.That is the cycle. That is the rhythm. When you go to the range this week, I want you to strip away the rest.Check your Setup.Make a Logical turn.Focus on Solid Contact.Allow a Natural finish. If you do a bad shot, don't ask, "Was my wrist bowed?" Ask, "Did I have a bad setup? Or did I just miss the contact?"Keep it simple. Golf is meant to be played, not analyzed to death.Get out of your head, get into your body, and trust these four pillars. That's it for this week. If you want to simplify your game even more, head over to imagengolf.com. We are here to help you see the game clearly.Stop the craziness. Start playing golf.I'm Daniel Guest. See you on the fairway.

After the hardest year of my life, I discovered something I'd been taking for granted—the one thing that held me when everything else fell apart. This isn't your typical gratitude episode. Because when you're barely holding it together, "just be thankful" doesn't cut it. In this episode, you'll discover: Why one deep breath does nothing (and what actually works) The science behind why your exhales matter more than your inhales The 60-second tool that can stop you from spiraling before a difficult conversation What happens in your nervous system when you sigh (hint: it's not dramatic, it's biological) Perfect timing before Thanksgiving week when family dynamics, grief, or anxiety might show up at the table. Come home to your breath, my friends. It's been there for you through every moment of your life—and it's not going anywhere. Ready to Actually Follow Through? You can listen to every podcast episode and read every self-help book, but if you're not implementing, nothing changes. That's where coaching comes in. I help women get clear on what boundaries they actually need, how to communicate them without falling apart, and most importantly—how to enforce them when guilt kicks in. Girlfriend, if you're struggling with self-worth, feeling like you'll never measure up, or can't separate yourself from your eating disorder - this episode is for you. Host Lindsey Nichol shares an incredibly vulnerable and inspiring episode about finding worth from within and discovering your true identity beyond the eating disorder. After a powerful moment during yoga listening to Lauren Daigle's "You Say," Lindsey was reminded of a truth that changed everything: You are not your eating disorder. Your true, authentic self lives underneath all of that. In this encouraging episode, Lindsey walks you through: Why eating disorders consume our identity over time How to separate yourself from the disorder The trap of measuring your worth by external things (weight, appearance, achievements, others' opinions) A beautiful self-compassion exercise you can do right now when you feel unworthy How to cultivate self-acceptance and kindness toward yourself The difference between your false identity (the ED) and your true identity (who you really are) This isn't just inspiration - this is an invitation to remember who you are beyond the eating disorder. To find worth from within. To practice self-compassion on the hard days. And to stop settling for a false version of yourself. If you're having a down day or need encouragement, grab your favorite Tarjay journal and let's sit together. You are worthy just because you are. In This Episode, You'll Hear: The Yoga Moment: Lauren Daigle's "You Say" How Lindsey was practicing yoga with Christian music When Lauren Daigle's song "You Say" came on and brought all the feels The powerful lyrics about fighting voices that say "I'm not enough" How the song speaks about finding worth and identity The theme of surrender: laying failures and victories at God's feet Why Lindsey encourages everyone (Christian or not) to listen to this song The Worth Trap: Measuring Yourself by External Things How people struggling with eating disorders tie worth to external factors The trap: worth measured by weight, appearance, achievements, what others think Why this gives temporary relief but not lasting joy How it leaves you feeling you'll never measure up or be enough The cycle of seeking external validation that never satisfies Identity Consumed: You Are Not Your Eating Disorder The truth: Eating disorders consume our identity over time In order to truly heal, we must separate ourselves from the disorder Your true, authentic, best self is NOT the voice on repeat in your mind That voice saying you're not enough, you'll never measure up, you're weak - that's the ED, not you Your real self, your warrior self, your champion self lives underneath The false identity vs. the true identity Finding Worth From Within (And Above) Your identity must be rooted in who you are at your core Your journey to internal worth is filtered by false identity right now Your true, authentic identity lives underneath all of that You're worthy just because you ARE - you cannot earn it For those with faith: trusting that God has you right where you are For everyone: your worth is inherent, not earned Creating Awareness: The Identity Shift How to become aware that you are not your eating disorder Observing the difference between your thoughts and the ED's thoughts Getting in community with people who support and build you up Listening to music that reminds you of truth Investing in yourself and seeking support (coaching, therapy, community) The importance of separating yourself from the disorder voice The Self-Compassion Research Kristin Neff: world-leading expert on self-compassion Research on self-compassion's impact on positive mental health What self-compassion means: treating yourself with love and understanding Even when life is full of pain and failure, choosing kind words over criticism Choosing to stop judging yourself and start honoring yourself Leaning into believing there is more for you Mindful Awareness Practice Eating disorders are framed around exaggerated, negative beliefs The ability to observe negative thoughts with clarity and openness Learning that feelings and thoughts aren't truths - they're just feelings and thoughts It's okay to not feel enough in this moment - that doesn't mean you aren't enough This moment doesn't define your forever The land of "not knowing what to do next" is temporary The Self-Compassion Exercise: Hand Over Heart A guided practice you can do right now (or come back to) Think of your biggest challenge - the thing you're most terrified of Place your hand over your heart Feel the warmth, the touch, the beat Acknowledge: You're human. You're here. You have purpose. You're worthy just because Let the heaviness of the challenge be there - don't fight it Breathe in, breathe out the heaviness Talk to yourself with compassion: "This is just a season" Validate the hard: "This moment is so hard. This day is so much. I'm scared" Let the feeling sit, then breathe it out - it's temporary Offer kindness as you would to your best friend or daughter "I can do hard things. I can embrace the journey. Maybe this is exactly where I need to be" The Truth About Your Worth You're not designed for everyone to like you You're not designed for everyone to find you worthy You're not designed to pull up a chair to everybody's table There is a radical need for YOUR uniqueness in this world When external factors weigh on you, it's a trap giving temporary relief Stop signing up for it. Stop settling for this version of life This isn't your authentic self. You're designed for more Healing means choosing YOU daily What You're Worth You're worth finding what makes you tick You're worth finding what foods you enjoy again You're worth stepping into the unknown with grace You're worth knowing, loving, and living Don't spend one more day believing you're unworthy ALL of you is worth it Key Takeaways: ✨ You are not your eating disorder - your true self lives underneath the disorder ✨ Eating disorders consume identity over time - healing requires separating yourself from the disorder ✨ Worth measured by external things is a trap - weight, appearance, achievements, others' opinions don't define you ✨ You're worthy just because you ARE - you cannot earn worth, it's inherent ✨ The voice on repeat is not YOU - that critical voice is the eating disorder, not your true self ✨ Self-compassion is research-backed - Kristin Neff's work shows its impact on mental health ✨ Feelings and thoughts aren't truths - they're temporary, not facts ✨ It's okay to not feel enough right now - this moment doesn't mean you aren't enough ✨ Your true identity lives underneath - beyond the false identity of the eating disorder ✨ Healing means choosing you daily - and that's okay, that's the work ✨ You're designed for more - there's a radical need for your uniqueness in this world Powerful Quotes from This Episode: From Lauren Daigle's "You Say": "I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I'm not enough" "Every single lie that tells me that I will never measure up" "You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing" "You say I am strong when I think I am weak" "You say I am held when I am falling short" "In you I find my worth, in you I find my identity" From Lindsey: "Eating disorders consume our identity, and in order to truly heal from them, we have to separate ourselves from the disorder" "You are so trapped in the eating disorder that your worth is tied to your weight, your appearance, what other people think about you, your achievements" "This trap gives you temporary relief and temporary control, but it's not lasting joy" "Your identity has to become so rooted in who you actually are at your core" "Your true, authentic identity lives underneath all of that" "You're worthy just because you are. You cannot earn it" "You are not the eating disorder. You observe" "The voice on repeat in your mind saying you're not enough - that's not your true self" "This is just a season. This is how I want you to talk to you" "This moment is so hard. This day is so much. I'm scared to death. Let that feeling sit there, then breathe it out" "It is just a temporary emotion" "When you challenge and change what's inside of you, everything changes around you" "You are not designed for everyone to like you. You are not designed for everyone to find you worthy" "There is a radical need for your uniqueness in this world" "This is just a trap that is giving you temporary relief. Stop signing up for it" "This isn't your authentic self. You're designed for more" "Healing just means that you're choosing you, and yes you're gonna have to do that on the daily" "You are worth finding. You're worth loving. You're worth living" "Your true and authentic self lies underneath it. We're gonna go on a quest to find out more about her" The Self-Compassion Exercise (Step-by-Step): Step 1: Identify Your Biggest Challenge Think about your biggest challenge right now - the one thing you're most terrified of. Maybe it's weight gain, taking the next step, letting go of control, being honest, or something else. Name it. Step 2: Place Your Hand Over Your Heart If you're able (not driving or operating machinery), place your hand over your heart. Feel: The warmth of your hand The touch against your chest The beat - the thump of your heart Your humanness. You're here. You're alive. Step 3: Acknowledge Your Worth Say to yourself: "I'm human" "I'm here" "I have purpose" "I'm worthy just because" Step 4: Let the Heaviness Be Acknowledge that the challenge feels super heavy. That's not wrong. That's not bad. It just IS. Allow it to be there. Allow the feeling of heaviness. Let it wash over you. Step 5: Breathe Breathe in deeply. Then breathe out the heaviness. This is just a season. Step 6: Talk to Yourself with Compassion Say these words to yourself: "This is just a season when I'm feeling not enough" "This is just a season when I'm feeling stuck" "This moment is so hard. This day is so much" "I'm scared to death" (name the specific fear) "I feel miserable and alone" Let that feeling sit there. Don't push it away. Step 7: Breathe It Out Breathe in. Exhale it out. It is just a temporary emotion. This moment is not permanent. Step 8: Practice Self-Compassion Tell yourself: "This is okay. This is just a season" "This is teaching me about my worth" "This is an experience, an experiment, an observation" "I am learning through this process" "So many people struggle with this - I'm not alone" "I'm human" Step 9: Offer Kindness As though you're speaking to your best friend or your daughter: "I can do hard things" "I can learn to embrace the journey" "I can lean into fear" "Maybe this is exactly where I need to be right now" Step 10: Remember the Truth When you challenge and change what's inside of you, everything changes around you. The Kristin Neff Self-Compassion Research: Who is Kristin Neff? Recognized worldwide as a leading expert on self-compassion and its impact on positive mental health and psychology. What is Self-Compassion? Treating yourself with love and understanding Even in circumstances full of pain and failure Choosing careful words over criticisms Choosing to stop judging yourself Leaning into honoring, nourishing, believing there is more for you Why It Matters in Recovery: Ties into mindful thoughts and awareness Helps you observe negative thoughts and emotions with clarity and openness Teaches you that feelings and thoughts aren't truths - they're just feelings and thoughts Helps separate the eating disorder thoughts from your true thoughts The Connection: Eating disorders are framed around exaggerated, glamorized negative beliefs. Self-compassion creates the space to observe these beliefs without identifying with them. Questions to Reflect On: About Your Identity: Can you separate yourself from your eating disorder? What does your "true self" look like underneath the disorder? When did the eating disorder start consuming your identity? Who are you beyond the eating disorder voice? About Your Worth: What external things are you using to measure your worth? (weight, appearance, achievements, others' opinions) Have these ever given you lasting satisfaction? Can you accept that you're worthy just because you ARE? What would change if you believed you couldn't earn or lose your worth? About Self-Compassion: How do you talk to yourself when things are hard? Would you talk to your best friend or daughter the way you talk to yourself? Can you offer yourself kindness even when life doesn't make sense? What would it feel like to treat yourself with love and understanding? About Your Uniqueness: What makes you uniquely YOU? What did you enjoy before the eating disorder consumed your identity? When's the last time you laughed or did something purely for joy? When's the last time you did something because you enjoyed it, not out of fear or obligation? The Big Questions: What is your biggest challenge right now? What are you most terrified of? What's one thing you can do today to choose yourself? Ready for Support? Burnout recovery begins in the body, not the mind. Discover why high performers confuse adrenaline with safety, and how to recalibrate your nervous system so peace feels productive again. If you've tried to rest but can't feel restored, this episode will change the way you see burnout forever. In The Recalibration, Julie Holly unpacks one of the most misunderstood truths about exhaustion: burnout isn't mental — it's nervous system fatigue. Through the story of Arianna Huffington's collapse and awakening, you'll discover how the drive that built your success can quietly become the fuel that drains it.This episode explores the intersection of burnout recovery, decision fatigue, and spiritual exhaustion, showing how the body begins to confuse adrenaline with safety when achievement becomes identity. You'll learn how overperformance isn't pride or failure — it's protection — and how to teach your system that peace can feel just as productive as pressure.Julie bridges neuroscience, faith, and identity-level transformation, guiding you to recognize that your body isn't betraying you — it's fighting for you. Because true restoration doesn't begin when the work stops — it begins when your body finally believes it's safe. The Recalibration isn't another mindset tactic. It's the root-level, identity-first process that rewires the nervous system, restores presence, and makes every other tool effective again.Today's Micro Recalibration: Ask yourself, “Where am I bracing for belonging?” Maybe it's in your shoulders when you lead, or in your jaw when you smile through exhaustion. Exhale that space until it softens — your body remembers peace before your mind does.If this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. True Stride
EP266: Rewire Your Nervous System, One Breath at a Time

True Stride

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2025 16:12

Sometimes the smallest things create the biggest shift. Lately, I've been reminded how something as simple as breathing, something we do automatically, can completely change how we feel. It's easy to forget that breath is both instinct and invitation. When I guide a yoga class or begin a shamanic reiki session, I always start with three unifying breaths. Each one feels like a soft landing, a way to come home to myself before I do anything else. It's a quiet reminder that calm isn't something we chase; it's something we breathe into being. Let's take a moment to breathe together now: The first breath will be a nourishing breath. Inhale deeply, exhale, let it out. The second breath will be a cleansing breath. Inhale deeply, exhale, let it out. And the last breath will be a rejuvenating breath. Inhale deeply, exhale, let it out. Then, just settle back into the natural rhythm of your own breath. On this Wise Walk, we'll look at how intentional breathing can nourish and even rewire your nervous system. We'll pause long enough to notice when we hold our breath, especially in those moments when life feels a bit too fast or too heavy. And we'll experiment with simple ways to release that tension, like box breathing or the 4-7-8 rhythm, so the body can find its own natural balance again. So as you walk, breathe, and listen, see if you can feel how each inhale steadies you and each exhale clears space for a calmer, more connected you. Do you notice the natural rhythm of your breath, or do you sometimes catch yourself holding it without realizing? When stress or anticipation builds, can you sense the moment your breath becomes shallow or tight? How does it feel when you pause and guide your breath back to a slower, steadier rhythm? Can you sense the shifts in your body as your breath begins to calm your nervous system? What practices help you stay connected to your breath when life feels fast or heavy? When you feel tension rise, how can you use your breath to bring yourself back to balance? How can you create time and space in your day to practice deep, intentional breathing that nourishes and restores you? As you move through the rest of your day, notice the moments when you can come back to your breath. Let it steady you. Let it clear space for calm, connection, and whatever comes next. I hope this Wise Walk reminded you that your breath is both your anchor and your reset button. Until next Thursday, keep tuning in, breathing deeply, and honoring the rhythm that keeps you aligned with your heart and your True Stride. In this episode: [04:40] There have been times in my life where I certainly catch myself holding my breath. [05:37] What I love about the three unifying breaths is that three deep breaths resets the nervous system. [06:12] There is scientific backing that supports this. Deep breathing will rewire our nervous systems. [07:21] I also catch myself holding my breath during a deep tissue massage. Breathwork can help us breathe through stress and cleanse. [08:25] The box breath is on counts of four. You inhale for a count of four. Then you hold for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four. Hold for a count of four. Repeat. [09:18] Being intentional about rewiring our nervous system is a great skill for all of us to have. [10:34] Box breathing is a beautiful rhythmic structure that gives us focus. [11:59] Breath work is always a focus like when we exercise. [12:41] You could also try the 4-7-8 practice. Inhale for four breaths. Hold for seven. Exhale for eight. [15:20] Scan your body to see how these practices help you. Memorable Quotes: "Every time we take three deep breaths, we give our nervous system a chance to reset." - Mary Tess "When we hold our breath, we hold tension. When we breathe deeply, we create space for ease." - Mary Tess "Breathwork is a bridge between the body and the mind. It reconnects what stress tries to separate." - Mary Tess Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Heart Value Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram

Rebuild with a quick three-column check: KEEP (works), DROP (drains), ADJUST (tweak). Aim for three bullets total; simple wins. Then step by committing to one change—schedule the keeper as a repeating block, remove a drainer from the calendar, or place an object (candle, water bottle, bracelet) where it will cue the tweak.Choose-your-energy menu:Hollow (low): Write one KEEP item. Stop there.Healing (medium): Do the full three-column check and circle one line.Becoming (higher): Put the circled item on your calendar with a repeat. To end today:Editing your grief life is an act of respect—for your person and for your nervous system. After suicide loss, you don't owe the world the version of you that bleeds the most to prove you loved them. Keep what steadies you, drop what drains you, and adjust the practices that almost work. This is not giving up; it's maturing your care. Let the metrics be honest: Did I breathe easier? Did recovery time shorten? Did I feel even a sliver more like myself? Put the keepers on repeat and let the rest go without a courtroom trial. Your energy is finite and precious; spend it where love can actually build something. Exhale. Keep what serves you; leave the rest. I'll be here again tomorrow.

CLICK HERE TODAY -- Touchstones let love travel with you without making every minute heavy.Journal prompt: “What I'm keeping from this month is…”Choose one flicker that feels like company: a phrase they loved, ten seconds of their song, a color that calls them to mind. Rebuild by placing a tiny touchstone where real life happens—light a candle at dinner, wear the bracelet, set a photo by the door, speak their name before you leave the house. Then step by anchoring it to a daily moment: “When I grab my keys, I touch the bracelet,” or “When the kettle clicks, I say their name.” Small, repeatable, merciful.Choose-your-energy menu:Hollow (low): Speak their name once and place a hand on your chest.Healing (medium): Put one touchstone where you'll naturally see/use it.Becoming (higher): Share your touchstone plan with a safe person and invite them to mirror it once this week.To end today:Legacy is not a museum; it's a living room. Touchstones let love move with you—into the kitchen, the car, the checkout line—without requiring a speech every time. After a suicide, memory can feel sharp or complicated; gentle, chosen rituals blunt the edge just enough to hold it. Speaking their name before you leave the house or hearing ten seconds of “their” song is not dwelling—it's belonging. You're showing your body that remembering is allowed and survivable. If a touchstone stings today, choose a lighter one; the goal isn't performance, it's companionship. Over time, these tiny ties stitch a steadier way to carry them forward without disappearing yourself. Exhale. Keep what serves you; leave the rest. I'll be here again tomorrow.

Get THE Leftover Pieces APP & don't miss anything! CLICK HERE TODAY -- The season gets crowded. Capacity isn't disloyalty—it's logistics for a heart carrying a lot.Journal prompt: “A boundary that made room for me was…”Choose your pace before the week chooses it for you. Let a flicker of relief lead: make one clear decision today and notice your shoulders drop. Rebuild with a concrete move—opt out (“Not this year”), leave early (“I can stay 45 minutes”), or tap-in an ally (someone who runs interference or signals the exit). Then step it onto the calendar: add start/exit times or your ally's name and plan in the event notes so Future-You doesn't have to negotiate in the moment.Choose-your-energy menu:Hollow (low): Remove one non-essential event this week.Healing (medium): Add an exit time to one commitment and text your ally.Becoming (higher): Add pacing notes to three upcoming events (opt out / leave early / ally + signal). To end today:Grief after suicide rarely fits the calendar the world hands you. Pacing isn't selfish; it's survival planning for a heart that's still rebuilding. When you opt out, leave early, or bring an ally, you're not disrespecting tradition—you're refusing to sacrifice yourself to it. Your capacity will change week to week; let your plans change with it. The people who love you can handle clarity, and the ones who can't are telling you something useful. There is no prize for white-knuckling through an event that costs you three days of recovery. Choose the version of participation that lets you wake up tomorrow with a little more breath than today. Exhale. Keep what serves you; leave the rest. I'll be here again tomorrow.

Dedicating a little time to tune into your body fortifies you to better handle the stresses of daily life. How To Do This Practice:  Find your space: Choose a quiet place where you feel safe and comfortable. You can sit, stand, or lie down, whatever helps you relax. If sitting, rest your hands on your thighs; if standing, let them hang by your sides. Begin with your breath: Close your eyes. Inhale slowly to a count of four, feeling your belly and chest expand. Exhale to a count of four, letting your body soften. Notice the temperature of the air as it moves in and out through your nose. Start at your feet: Bring your attention to your feet on the ground. Notice sensations— pressure, warmth, tingling. Gently wiggle your toes. On the next breath, move your awareness to your ankles and calves, then your knees, thanking them for their steady work. Move up the body: With each breath, shift attention upward. Thighs, hips, and lower back, then your stomach. Feel it rise and fall with your breath. Continue up through your back and shoulders, releasing any tension there. Soften the upper body: Turn your attention to your throat, face, and head. Relax your jaw, smooth your forehead, and feel any soft tingling at the top of your head. Then bring awareness to your hands and fingers. Close with awareness: Take a few final deep breaths. On your last exhale, open your eyes gently. Notice how your body feels and carry that awareness into the rest of your day.
