This week, we're bringing you something special: an episode from Add to Cart, a show we love hosted by Kulap Vilaysack and SuChin Pak. You might remember Kulap when she was a guest on our show back in 2018, where she bravely unpacked her childhood trauma and shared how it led to her documentary film. Add to Cart is a witty, subversive take on consumerism. Each week, Kulap and SuChin have candid (and often TMI) conversations about what they're adding to or removing from their carts—whether it's products, people, trends, or philosophies. Together, they explore what we're buying into and what it reveals about who we are. In this episode, they're joined by author and journalist Vicky Nguyen for the very first Auntie Book Club of the year, diving into her powerful memoir Boat Baby. Vicky talks about going from boat refugee to national TV and why the R is for refuse in her household. We're so excited to share with you our first collab with another podcast - Add to Cart! Susan was a guest on the show to discuss her book, her love of Costco and her grumblings about the rising price of matcha lattes :)Listen to the trifecta of the Asian Aunties as Susan Lieu joins SuChin Pak and Kulap Vilaysack on this episode of Add to Cart. Susan talks about writing her first memoir, “The Manicurist's Daughter,” which chronicles her search for answers after losing her mother to a botched tummy tuck. It's an emotionally raw conversation that will leave you hopeful that generational healing is just as real as the trauma. Then, the Aunties dive into her cart, which is truly an ode to Costco and its generous return policy. Susan also shares her solution to inflating matcha latte prices. Lemonada has teamed up with Apple Books to bring you the Lemonada Book Club. “The Manicurist's Daughter” by Susan Lieu is our audiobook of the month! We are THRILLED to be talking this week about Mary-Kate and Ashley's appearance at MTV's 2003 Video Music Awards and subsequent Rolling Stone Cover (and never again about Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action). On August 28th 2003, Mary-Kate and Ashley made their second appearance at the MTV VMAs. For anyone who doesn't remember, this was a big year for the VMAs. This was the VMAs that opened with the notorious Britney Spears, Madonna & Christina Aguilera performance, and a tidbit that the history books don't mention is that Mary-Kate and Ashley were also there! They presented best pop video with David Spade, and every joke Chris Rock makes about them is as cringey as you can imagine. We also talk about their red carpet interview with SuChin Pak before the show, who asks them how they feel about Rolling Stone calling them "America's Fantasy," in their iconic cover that was coming out just a week later. In this interview and in the Rolling Stone article, Mary-Kate and Ashley walk the impossible tightrope of posing for a magazine with notoriously sexy covers while denying an awareness of their own sexuality amidst a barrage of reminders that America has started sexualizing them. We do our best to unpack this strange and unsettling time in pop culture history, and buckle up for the rollercoaster that is about to be our coverage of Mary-Kate and Ashley in 2003 & '04. We hope you enjoy this first chapter! You can also watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here. You can watch the full video of the 2003 VMAS here and read their Rolling Stone Article here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsQuestions/thoughts? In this episode, SuChin Pak and Kulap Vilaysack join Dan to bully him relentlessly before being a part of perhaps the classiest conversation to ever be on the podcast: a discussion on bubble formations in sparkling water. And here on Add to Cart, it's the season of endorphin dressing. Kulap finds a brand that embodies auntie style and comfort, with oversized silhouettes and bold prints. Speaking of auntie style, SuChin is redefining summer staples with cashmere and adult bibs. Plus, Ku and Su review the New York Mag etiquette guide which tackles essential questions such as: When do you write thank-you letters? How should you respond to a compliment? And how much do you tip for a water bottle (if anything?) Please note, Add To Cart contains mature themes and may not be appropriate for all listeners. The producers of this series wanted to highlight another Lemonada Media podcast called Add to Cart. Join comedian-writer-director Kulap Vilaysack and veteran journalist SuChin Pak, in a subversive take on consumerism. Every Tuesday, they have honest, revealing (sometimes TMI) conversations about all the big and little things they're adding to, or removing from, their carts. They decide what's worth the monetary/emotional investment, and what's not. From beauty products and health trends, to celebrities and philosophies they're passionate about, our hosts dig into anything we buy into and what it says about who we are. It's summertime baby! Missing the aunties in your lives? Have no fear, we're sharing an episode of V Interesting featuring our very own SuChin Pak. In light of big media personalities getting booted from their platforms and other outlets shutting their doors, V discusses the phenomenon of news deserts and where to find good information in spite of this. Plus, they run through the pros and cons of broadcasting one's relationship status to the world. V then sits down with MTV trailblazer and veteran journalist SuChin Pak to discuss the value of connecting with curious audiences, especially before social media. SuChin, who now co-hosts Lemonada's podcast Add To Cart, gets honest about what it's been like to transition from reporting hard news to chatting about shopping from the comfort of her home. (Spoiler alert: it's only in the latter that she's been able to, as she says, truly embrace her auntie behavior.) Coming to you every week from her carriage house in Marblehead, MA, Ronna Glickman welcomes her dear friend and co-host, Hollywood Heartthrob Bryan Safi. Together these outrageous podcasting pros, along with their all-star guests, dispense real, thoughtful, advice to real listeners while touching on the events of the day. Never fear, the exquisite taste and style that Ronna (& Bryan's) fans have come to expect is always on display. Ronna & Bryan are not doctors or psychologists or even licensed marriage & family therapists. They're just two people with terrific opinions who happen to be right most of the time. In this episode, coming to you from the archive, Kulap and SuChin join Ronna and Bryan to dispense hilarious, yet heartfelt advice on letting your nanny go during the pandemic, baking 80 dozen (!!!) cookies for your possibly unappreciative friends, and helping your partner continue to feel eager on the journey to sobriety. Yes. we're still on break for another week, but we've got a New Years treat for you! As you may know, our dear, dear friends Kulap Vilaysack and SuChin Pak host their own podcast ADD TO CART, and if you're not listening to this show, we don't know what to tell you. It's fabulous, and we wanted to do a "feed drop," as the podcast industry calls it, pardon me, to share one particular episode with you. If you loved Kulap and SuChin when they were on Ask Ronna, then you'll love Ronna as a special guest on Add To Cart. Enjoy! Join comedian-writer-director Kulap Vilaysack and veteran journalist SuChin Pak, in a subversive take on consumerism. Each week, they have honest, revealing (sometimes TMI) conversations about all the big and little things they're adding to, or removing from, their carts. They decide what's worth the monetary/emotional investment, and what's not. From beauty products and health trends, to celebrities and philosophies they're passionate about, our hosts dig into anything we buy into and what it says about who we are. In this episode, Ronna dishes on the most gorgeous and ballsy L.A. art Ku and Su have yet to see. Plus, she's getting rejuvenated at a retreat that's as incredible as its price tag. Prepare for the classiest cart.
