Undeterred by its many detractors, Meta is still trying to make the metaverse happen. This week, the company held its annual Connect developer conference at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage to announce a new mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest 3, as well as new smart glasses made by Ray-Ban that let the wearer livestream videos and interact with an AI-powered voice chatbot. Meta also showed off an array of celebrity-infused AI chatbots that can mimic big-name folks like Snoop Dogg and Kendall Jenner. You'd be forgiven for thinking all this feels a little bit like an episode of Black Mirror. This week on Gadget Lab, we talk with WIRED senior AI writer Khari Johnson about the mixed reality hardware Meta announced this week, its voice-controlled smart glasses, its weird new AI chatbots, and where the company sits in the great AI arms race. Show Notes: Read Khari's story about Meta's many AI chatbots. Read Lauren's story about the upcoming Meta Quest 3 headset and chatbot-enabled Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Recommendations: Khari recommends the new movie The Creator. Lauren recommends the ‘90s movie Sliding Doors. Mike also recommends a ‘90s movie, Dazed and Confused. Khari Johnson can be found on social media @kharijohnson. Lauren Goode is @LaurenGoode. Michael Calore is @snackfight. Bling the main hotline at @GadgetLab. "Hi! This is Rich Hosek, writer, narrator and producer of the Bedtime Stories for Insomniacs fiction podcast. To be clear, these are NOT stories to fall asleep by. That's why we say they're for Insomniacs, because after you listen to one, you'll want to keep on going. So, if you don't have Insomnia, you just may find out what it's like to not be able to fall asleep.. I like to describe the show as an audiobook version of an Anthology TV Show, like The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror—with a few old-time radio style sound effects to create an immersive auditory experience. Although the stories on the podcast range from Horror and Suspense to Science Fiction, Mystery and Humor, the story I'm presenting to you in this showcase has elements of Urban Fantasy. There's something magical that happens. A boy is born who lives his life in dog years, growing up and old seven times faster than a normal child. But it's more than that. It explores how such an unusual condition affects not only his life, but the lives of the people closest to him. I hope you'll enjoy Dog Years, and take a listen to my other tales at BedtimeStories.studio. Thanks, and all the very best." This week, Dana and Stephen are once again joined by Kat Chow, author of the memoir Seeing Ghosts. The panel begins by jumping into the ring with Cassandro, the oddly conflict-adverse biopic about the lucha libre superstar and exótico gay icon, Saúl Armendáriz, who is played terrifically by Gael García Bernal in a provocative, tour-de-force performance. Then, the trio wades into comedian–and future Daily Show host hopeful–Hasan Minhaj's thorny web of lies with Slate staff writer, Nitish Pahwa, who detailed the devastating impact of Minhaj's many falsehoods in his essay, “Hasan Minhaj Meant Something to Brown Americans. Was It All an Act?” Finally, the three react to “The 40 Greatest Stand-Alone TV Episodes of All Time,” written by the Slate Staff, a massive labor of love and fun thought experiment that spans The Sopranos, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, Black Mirror, and High Maintenance. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses the impact the last few years have had on their lives, inspired by Katy Schneider's essay for The Cut, “The Pandemic Skip.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Dana sent this to everyone she knows–family, friends, etc. It's a new interview with Martin Scorsese, written by Zach Baron for GQ entitled “Martin Scorsese: ‘I Have To Find Out Who The Hell I Am.'” In addition to films and moviemaking (his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, is set to be released in October), the legendary director, now 80, also speaks candidly about life, its inevitable end, and his own mortality. It's a dream of an interview and absolutely sublime. Kat: Small Things Like These, a beautifully written historical fiction novel by Claire Keegan about the horrific conditions women and children endured at Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. Stephen: “Quantum poetics,” an essay in Aeon written by William Egginton, a professor of humanities at James Hopkins University. In it, Egginton describes the ways Argentine short story author, Jorge Luis Borges, and German theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg “converged on the notion that language both enables and interferes with our grasp of reality.” Outro music: “Forbidden Love” by OTE Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Join Caleb and Mark for this live recording as they enjoy a themed drink (or two) and bring their high-octane progressive Christian perspectives in consideration of season 6 of Netflix's "Black Mirror." Be prepared for a full on, geeked out discussion leaning heavily towards theological and political matters. Pour a drink and tune in for a fun (and thoughtful) time.
Join Leo and me as we journey into the realm of Black Mirror, analyzing the societal implications of the Netflix series and its portrayal of our obsession with social media. We unpack the episode "Nosedive", examining its depiction of influencers, the burden and blessings of their platforms, and whether the show is a critique or an exaggeration of modern society. Listen as we share our insights into the role of recurring actors, and discuss the performance of Latisha Roy in "Black Museum", and how it propels the conversation about technology's impact on marginalized communities. Brace yourself as we step into the interactive world of "Bandersnatch" and debate how it gives the illusion of choice while actually leading to decision paralysis. We analyze how episodes like "Jonas Awful" and "Law Henry" draw attention to the exploitative nature of true crime, and discuss the nuances of Netflix's terms and conditions. Furthermore, we explore the concept of free will in Bandersnatch and share our thoughts on its many, somewhat disappointing, endings. Lastly, we move on to discussing our favorite performances and TV shows, with Daniel Kaluya's performance in "50 Million Merits" and Aaron Paul's performance in "Beyond the Sea" taking center stage. We also explore how seasoned actor, Andrew Garfield, outshone others in the movie "Tick, Tick, Boom". Wrapping up, we list our top 5 Black Mirror episodes and eagerly anticipate future seasons. So tune in for a riveting exploration of Black Mirror and its impact on our society! Welcome to our Summer of Book Love series!Every Tuesday this summer we will feature new episodes of 7 Minutes in Book Heaven which has your next summer read! New episodes of This Queer Book Saved My Life! drop this September.Today we meet Marisa Crane and their new novel: I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself. What's it about? Dept. of Speculation meets Black Mirror in this lyrical, speculative debut about a queer mother raising her daughter in an unjust surveillance state. Kris is a new mother, grieving the loss of her wife and thoroughly unprepared for the reality of raising a child alone. Kris teeters on the edge of collapse, fumbling in a daze of alcohol, shame, and self-loathing. Yet as the kid grows, Kris finds her footing, raising a child whose irrepressible spark cannot be dampened by the harsh realities of the world. She can't forget her wife, but with time, she can make a new life for herself and the kid, supported by a community of fellow misfits who defy the Department to lift one another up in solidarity and hope.Buy I Keep My Exoskeletons to MyselfVisit our Bookshop or buy directly right now: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781646221295We also talk about the writing craft book Meander, Spiral, and Explode by Jane Alison. "We are always striving for the top - but sometimes it's better to embrace being in the middle".Konnie Huq is a TV & Radio presenter, a screenwriter and a children's author, who holds the record for being the longest-serving presenter of the iconic British children's TV programme Blue Peter. The essence of what Konnie speaks about in this episode is that our continual striving for more, bigger & better is making us less happy. As she says, if you can be happy with what you already have - you are winning! Konnie recognises her good fortune, which was helped by her time working on Blue Peter, and she has adopted something of an anti-mindless consumerist mundset - that has somehwat rubbed off on her husband, the creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker.YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeSimonMundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/For the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - head to simonmundie.com Hosted on Acast. Imagine a Jetsons-esque home that attempts to meet all of your needs while also featuring a room that makes your imagination into reality. Add some behaviorally troubled children imagining bloodthirsty lions into the mix, and you have the setup for Ray Bradbury's The Veldt. In a dystopian tale that would make an excellent episode of Black Mirror, Bradbury explores the pitfalls of tech that robs humanity of purpose. The guys discuss and analyze the story's plot, characters, and more.
