Stand Up is a daily podcast. I book, host, edit, post and promote new episodes with brilliant guests every day. Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 800 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls Check out StandUpwithPete.com to learn more I've known Tim Wise for over 10 years and I have tried to showcase his work wherever I go from siriusxm to CNN to this podcast. I always learn so much when I read or talk to him. Today Tim and I talked about his latest writing Get all of his books Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation's most prominent antiracist essayists and educators. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. Wise is the author of seven books, including his highly-acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, as well as Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority, and Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. His forthcoming book, White LIES Matter: Race, Crime and the Politics of Fear in America, will be released in 2018. His essays have appeared on Alternet, Salon, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, Black Commentator, BK Nation, Z Magazine and The Root, which recently named Wise one of the “8 Wokest White People We Know.” Wise has been featured in several documentaries, including “The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump and the Politics of Race and Class in America,” and “White Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America,” both from the Media Education Foundation. He also appeared alongside legendary scholar and activist, Angela Davis, in the 2011 documentary, “Vocabulary of Change.” In this public dialogue between the two activists, Davis and Wise discussed the connections between issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and militarism, as well as inter-generational movement building and the prospects for social change. Wise is also one of five persons—including President Barack Obama—interviewed for a video exhibition on race relations in America, featured at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. Additionally, his media presence includes dozens of appearances on CNN, MSNBC and NPR, feature interviews on ABC's 20/20 and CBS's 48 Hours, as well as videos posted on YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms that have received over 20 million views. His podcast, “Speak Out with Tim Wise,” launched this fall and features weekly interviews with activists, scholars and artists about movement building and strategies for social change. Wise graduated from Tulane University in 1990 and received antiracism training from the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, in New Orleans. 53:00 Christian Finnegan  is an American stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City.   BUY HIS NEW ALBUM--- "Show Your Work: Live at QED"   Finnegan is perhaps best known as one of the original panelists on VH1's Best Week Ever and as Chad, the only white roommate in the “Mad Real World” sketch on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. We knew Cyd, like Tara and Dave, had just done a rewatch of the original-flavor CSI, so we were really glad she could join us to break down CBS's new reboot of its network-changing old favorite (which...only went off the air like six years ago?). We talked about whether we'll keep watching for "The New Class" after l'affaire Hodges gets resolved, when exactly the show thinks it is culturally, and what's going on with the sloppy editing. Then we went Around The Dial with Call The Midwife, Legends Of The Hidden Temple, grief-therapy sitcom recs, and Buried (with another Lauer rant from Buntsy) before Cyd was NOT a crackpot about shows using consultants on "hacker" and other internetty storylines. Chris Billig tried to get all our exercise balls up the hill in support of his Taskmaster Canon submission before Mlle. Caroline won, Netflix lost, and we put a foot in two worlds with a Game Time about reboots. This is Convo By Design and today, we are talking super luxe gaming tables and changing ideas about residential entertainment. 11 Ravens, the LA based multi-disciplinary studio with a fondness for fun and games and luxury design. So, blending the two to form a collection of gaming tables made perfect sense. Launching the new collection from their brand new showroom in LA's crown jewel of design, the Pacific Design Center also made sense. I sat down with friend and Director of Business Development for 11 Ravens, Sea Zeda. It was nice catching up with her. It was also great hearing more about 11 Ravens and the amazing products they create.  Are you subscribing to the podcast, if not, please do so you get every episode automatically when they are published. You can find Convo By Design everywhere you find your favorite podcasts and now, you can find us on DesignNetwork dot Org, a destination dedicated to podcasts, all things design and architecture so make sure to check it out. Thank you, Sea. Great catching up with you. Thank you Walker Zanger for presenting Convo By Design and ThermaSol, you guys are remarkable partners. Thank you for listening. Without you, what's the point. As you may have noticed, Convo By Design is bringing you design talent from all across the country. It's not just about LA and New York, but Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. We are so rich in talent that sometimes, we miss some of the gems. Keep those email coming, email me with show suggestions and feel free to suggest a designer, architect or other creative you think the editorial team should be aware of. Thanks again for listening, remember why you do what you do and that the business of design is about making better the lives of those we serve. Until next week, be well and take today first.

We're so grateful Nick Rheinwald-Jones jumped through a green Jurassic vagina with us to watch La Brea, NBC's latest attempt at a sci-fi dystopia -- but this one involves a sinkhole in "Los Angeles," were-dogs, and Jon Seda. Should you watch the pilot just for the dumb crappy fun of it all? Or is it too stuck in that 2006 "we can be the next Lost" mindset to be enjoyable? We definitely enjoyed going Around The Dial with Controlling Britney Spears, The Big Leap, Being James Bond, Tea With The Dames, Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant, and Squid Game, and in related news, Dave was not a crackpot about flashbacks to events in the same episode. David Ellis Dickerson challenged us to pick a show bible a la the Star Trek: TOS episode "A Piece of the Action," and base an entire future society on it, and then Nick challenged our conceptions about second episodes of series when he pitched Episode 02 of Succession for the Canon. His research and writing focuses on terrorism, counterterrorism, social media influence and Russian disinformation. Clint's tracking of terrorist foreign fighters allowed him to predict the rise of the Islamic State over al Qaeda in 2014. From 2014 – 2016, Clint worked with a team to track and model the rise of Russian influence operations via social media leading up to the U.S. Presidential election of 2016. This research led Clint to testify before four different Senate committees in 2017 and 2018 regarding Russia's information warfare campaign against the U.S. and the West.   Clint's writing has appeared in a range of publications to include the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Daily Beast, Politico, Lawfare, War On The Rocks and the Huffington Post. Before becoming a consultant, Clint served as a U.S. Army infantry officer, a FBI Special Agent, as the Executive Officer of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point (CTC), as a consultant to the FBI's Counter Terrorism Division (CTD) and National Security Branch (NSB), and as an analyst supporting the U.S. Intelligence Community and U.S. Special Operations Command.   21:00 Christian Finnegan  is an American stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City. Finnegan is perhaps best known as one of the original panelists on VH1's Best Week Ever and as Chad, the only white roommate in the “Mad Real World” sketch on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. He hosted TV Land's game show "Game Time". As an actor, Finnegan portrayed the supporting role of "Carl" in the film Eden Court, a ticket agent in "Knight and Day" and several guest roles including a talk show host on "The Good Wife". In October 2006, Finnegan's debut stand up comedy CD titled Two For Flinching was released by Comedy Central Records, with a follow-up national tour of college campuses from January to April 2007. “Au Contraire!” was released by Warner Bros. University of California (NOT California University...you'll see) faculty member Bobby Krut returns to talk about Sandra Oh's new English-department half-hour dramedy on Netflix, The Chair. We discussed the almost-perfect pacing and casting, underrating Amanda Peet at your peril, whether Holland Taylor should get a spinoff, and more. Then we went Around The Dial with Nine Perfect Strangers, Messyness, I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, and Unforgotten before Doug tasked us with adding a Russian Roulette-style trapdoor to a TV moment. Sarah wouldn't let the bird rest in her Canon presentation for a fifth-season Cheersepisode; true crime won and Mike Richards lost; and the truth was once again stranger than fiction in a Game Time animé sequel. In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up at 3:15am and clean your house. Or something. In all seriousness, we are humbled by your continued prodding to get a Patreon page up for EHG and here it is! Extra Hot Great on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
