Jeff Deist hosts a solo show to discuss one of his favorite novels from childhood, All Quiet on the Western Front. Its young protagonist Paul Bäumer, barely out of adolescence, narrates the horrors of trench warfare from the perspective only a grunt soldier can provide. Bäumer and his mates lose their innocence, along with various limbs and often their lives. But what makes the book so compelling is not simply the description of wartime savagery, but the dialogue between the men: stripped of any illusions, they see the futility of killing and maiming simply to capture a few more feet of no-man's land. The dialogue in Chapter 9 between the men, arguing about whether states of "people" go to war, is masterful. This is a book every passionate antiwar advocate needs to read time and again. Episode #37 - February 3rd, 2019 - 3:03:33 This week, our hosts Jose, Walt, Metatron and Elias welcome Wolfie into the fold as we geek out about all the things that dropped pop culture related. And, boy, did we get into it with this SUPERSIZED episode! Jose started us off with his geek of the week with Attack on Titan, Trigger Warning on Netflix and They Shall not Grow Old. Metatron tackled Young Justice and Punisher Season 2. Walt suffered through Dragon Ball Evolution with Elias, while Elias got into some hip hop with "Nightmares" by Lil Skies and Lil Finch and some Fortnite news. We wrap up the Geek Outs of the Week with Wolfie talking about some Megaman 2, Devil is A Part Timer and Wise Crack on YouTube. Sports was on our minds with the Kristaps Porzingis trade from the Knicks and we give our opinions on Super Bowl LIII. Then we really get crazy talking about the toys for the upcoming Godzilla movie, the female Fast and Furious, the upcoming Joker movie and the newly announced Hot Wheels and Funko Pop movies. We get batty over Ben Affleck as he is out of the DC Universe, Suicide Squad 2 gets a release date and Shaggy (?) in Mortal Kombat 11. Then, we get into the Trailer Park and give our impressions of both the Birds of Prey movie and Hobbs and Shaw. Finally, we review (with spoilers) the M. Night Shyamalan movie, Glass. Boy, that was a lot, I'm tired just typing this! Anyway, check it out and have fun with us!
