Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 2005's Psychonauts. We stay in the same year as our last game, and dive into a little of the prehistory of the game before diving into the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Coach Oleander's Brain Issues covered: making something for someone else to own, spinning off from LucasArts, staying true to their persona, being a more open studio, documentaries about the studio, the possibility of the studio closing, how the game starts, a super stylistic game, clear identity, bringing individuality to each character, asymmetry, offending the efficient developer, hand-crafting everything, impeccable writing and voice acting, themes coming through later, trailblazing, an indie scene in San Francisco, changing guards at publishers, drawing on psychology for its setting, a cohesive and pure game, exploring two tutorial areas, customizing buckets of figments of imagination, building engine game and studio together, crunch-tastic development, a variety of action and platforming primitives, an underimplemented feel and polish, fighting the camera, systemic cameras that have trouble covering everything, a big swing, asymmetric multiplayer modes, mutators, an internal mail alias, voice over IP, what do you need to support an MP game post-launch, inventory tetris, risk to return to get a loot item, a vestigial element of games, forcing hard choices or loops, re-examining genre "defaults," informing our own work, Octavia's gadget system, giving more agency to the player, a shifting meta, a wide tunnel of known options. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Tim Schafer, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, LucasArts, Microsoft, Ed Fries, Majesco, 2015, Metal of Honor: Allied Assault, Infinity Ward, Call of Duty, Jason West, Vince Zapella, Nihilistic, Infinite Machine, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Phantom Menace, Dean Sharpe, Kalani Streicher, Broken Age, Unreal Engine, Kiln, Two Player Productions, Scott Campbell, Disney, Warner Bros, Studio Ghibli, Peter Chan, Day of the Tentacle, SW: Republic Commando, Beyond Good & Evil, Monkey Island (series), Spyro, Super Mario (series), Illumination, Braid, Celeste, Choice Provisions/Gaijin Games, Super Meat Boy, Team Meat, World of Goo, Crystal Dynamics, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ocarina of Time, Ashton Herrmann, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Duke Nuke'em, Hunt: Showdown, Repo, Peak, Matthew, Outlaws, Aliens vs Predator, Starcraft, Matthew, Diablo, Animal Crossing, Resident Evil (series), Harley Baldwin, Halo, DOOM (1993), Maas, Project: Octavia, Troy Mashburn, Thief (series), Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. The system that decides whether you have a good night in multiplayer almostnever gets explained by the people who actually build it. Today it does.Call of Duty just walked back the biggest matchmaking change in its history.Activision recently published internal white papers explaining parts of howtheir system actually works, which is rare for an industry that usually treatsthis stuff as proprietary. Lewis Ward and Greg Posner sit down with CharlieOlson, the engineer who helped architect Call of Duty's matchmaking ratingsystem back in 2015, to walk through what the white papers actually said, what they left out, and what's broken about how the industry thinks aboutmultiplayer matchmaking."Matchmaking is part of the UX. It's not a technical problem. This is adesign problem." — Charlie Olson

Vragen? Mail ons! Op allinthegame@bnr.nl Over All in the GameAll in the Game is de podcast over games voor iedereen. Het komt allemaal aan bod in All in the Game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Halo is on PlayStation. Let that sink in. On this one we get into Halo: Campaign Evolved — the full Unreal Engine 5 remake landing on PS5, Xbox and PC on July 28 — and why cutting the multiplayer to protect the "next mainline Halo" might be the dumbest part of the whole thing. Plus the AI controversy Halo Studios can't stop being squirrely about. Then it's GTA 6: pre-orders go live June 25, November 19 release, no PC version, and the $100 price question nobody wants to answer honestly. Spoiler: if you'll pay $70, you'll pay $100, and we explain exactly why. But the one we're actually hyped about is WARDOGS — Bulkhead addressed the "too arcadey" killcam feedback head-on instead of going quiet like every AAA studio does. We break down the ghillie-suit compromise, the hardcore servers, and why devs who actually play their own game are so rare right now. O my God, I trust in thee. Let me not be ashamed, let not my enemies triumph over me. With Steven Spielberg's latest film Disclosure Day hitting theatres this month, we decided to revisit one of his most successful movies of all time and one that we have not discussed in great detail before. 1998's Saving Private Ryan was a hugely influential film that redefined action movies for decades to come, but does it hold up in 2026 or is it FUBAR? Is Spielberg always ahead of the curve with his casting choices? Is this an anti-war movie and is such a thing even possible? Would the Call of Duty video games exist without this movie? Which members of the Film Junk crew would have survived WWII? Earn this and download this week's episode of Film Junk.

Welcome to episode #279 of The COD Casuals, where we discuss all things Call of Duty, casual and professional! In this episode, we start off with a discussion about gaming setups, and the different paths people take when making their setup their own, and the expense and thought that goes behind it. We give our opinions and share our experience on this. We then shift to news with MW4, confirming that we will have early access to the campaign, and a leaked screenshot of this year's gunsmith. We give our thoughts on this year's take on gunsmith, and lead into a conversation regarding customization in COD over the years. From camo grinds in the past to present, to the loss of interest in grinding titles and emblems, we discuss what went wrong, and what could be done to bring back those parts of COD that were a big part of the game. Finally, we end with our CDL review for the past weekend's matches, as we draw closer to Major IV. Do you have a gaming setup you're looking to upgrade, or are you content with your current setup? With MW4, are you planning to preorder to play the campaign early, or are you not interested in playing it early? What are your thoughts on our customization talk with COD? Is there any chance we can get back some of the customization that was a huge part of the game back in the day? Please let us know as we discuss this and much more! In this massive episode of the Vookcast, Ollie, Luke, Angelo, and Michael are back to discuss all of the news, announcements, and release dates for absolutely everything announced for Switch 2 during the fake-E3 season. We're talking random (dumb) Square Enix announcements, Call of Duty coming to Switch 2, a bunch of Atari reveals, some belated ports, a bunch of Summer Game Fest announcements, and of course, the big one, the June Nintendo Direct. Naturally, there's a bunch of side quests along the way too. It is the Vookcast, after all. It's all capped off with an incredible game of Nintendo 20 Questions. Jake's sick, Raz is recovered, and karma is real — so we kept it loose and answered your questions from the Discord this week. We get into whether Apex hitting all-time-high player counts means anything for a Warzone comeback (short version: Warzone is the abusive ex who shows up with roses), why Zelda is a children's game, the most overrated franchises in gaming, when a game stops being a game and becomes a simulator (Tarkov vs. Squad vs. Hell Let Loose), whether AI will let you build GTA 6 in one prompt, the hardest gaming achievements we've ever earned, and a pile of off-topic chaos — first jobs, childhood cereal, the one-hair-on-your-steak test, and which historical event we'd go witness. Plus: a new development on splitting donations, the DMZ deep-dive over on Patreon, and a behind-the-scenes look at how the show actually gets made now. Got a question for us? Join the Discord (linked everywhere) and drop it in the Q&A channel. We may or may not answer it. Welcome to episode #278 of The COD Casuals, where we discuss all things Call of Duty, casual and professional! In this episode, we start off with the new DMZ reveal trailer for MW4. With DMZ being a returning mode after a couple years away, we discuss the importance of this mode, and talk about if it's something that Call of Duty should actually focus on, or leave to another studio to develop as its own game. We then shift to BO7, and the new classic mode that has been put out with season 4. This has breathed some new life into the game, and we give our thoughts on it, and why COD doesn't make their base game more like this temporary mode. We then shift to the Sony and Xbox game reveals, and the growing competition between both consoles. With remasters making an appearance for both studios, a potential Black Ops 1 and 2 port/remaster is rumored. We give our opinion on the success and risk of doing this, and close with talk regarding the everchanging CDL, as we are quickly approaching major 4. What did you think of the DMZ trailer? Are you going to be playing it, or is it something you will be avoiding? Have you gotten a chance to play the new classic mode in BO7? Who do you think is coming out on top for the console wars after both reveals, and what do you think of potential port/remasters of old COD titles? Xbox's 2026 summer showcase has come and gone! As per usual, it was a relatively strong showing featuring big reveals and welcome surprises, yet it still managed to put up a few big head scratchers. Fortunately, the good outweighed the bad. For starters, the hardcore Xbox community has deeply yearned for the return to exclusivity. After months of lip service, Xbox is taking action by making Gears Of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution console exclusive. Obviously, that leaves us with many questions! Why these two games? What data do they hope to collect from them? Is Xbox appeasing their hardcore community for enough time to help rebuild the base before transitioning to a fully PC ecosystem? Beyond the strategy updates, we have plenty of good games! Halo, State Of Decay, A Plague Tale: Resonance, Persona 6, a new Spryo, Vivarium, and a chockful of other delightful looking games all made their presence felt. Unfortunately, Xbox has decided for what is technically a third year in a row to round out a showcase on a Call Of Duty game. Your Day Off @Hairdustry; A Podcast about the Hair Industry!
Byrd Mena... From a Basement in Waterbury to Stages Around the WorldByrd Mena (@byrdmena) is one of the most original minds in the hair industry. Venezuelan roots. Connecticut hustle. Third degree black belt. Call of Duty leaderboard legend. And a brand builder who figured out content creation, community, and global reach before most people knew those were even skills.Fair warning... this one was a blast. Venezuelan food debates, Chuck Norris jokes, a Chuck E. Cheese trauma story, and two guys who walked into the podcast couch as strangers and left as best friends. Plus a special cameo from fellow Venezuelan Alejandra Wolff Pickering (@ale_wlff) who crashed the couch, proved her cachapa credentials, and earned her stamp of approval from Byrd himself.Recorded live at the American Beauty Show in Chicago. Hosted by Corey Gray (@hairdustry), co-hosted by Geno Chapman (@genochapman). Part of our live series sponsored by Serious Business (seriousbusiness.net | January 16-18, 2027, New Orleans). The Origin StoryByrd grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut... the dirty waters... with a barber brother, a hairstylist sister, and a best friend with clippers. He started cutting hair at 13 in a basement with an orange extension cord running to the neighbor's outlet. No proper shop. No formal training. Just a kid who wanted in and friends willing to sit in the chair. From Call of Duty to Content CreatorBefore Sharp Fade, before the stages, before the 40 countries... there was a PlayStation 3 and a Call of Duty leaderboard obsession. Byrd taught himself content creation making YouTube gaming videos in 2007... before Google even bought the platform. That same creative muscle became the engine behind everything that followed.Building Sharp FadeIn 2015 Byrd launched Sharp Fade... a barbering media brand inspired by ESPN. He spotlighted independent artists, flew them around the world with no agency fees, and built a platform with millions of followers that changed how the industry thinks about branding. He did it all while staying faceless for two years... pure Banksy energy.Live Fashion Hair and Giving BackA show in the Canary Islands opened his eyes to a whole new level of creative possibility. Today he is a part owner of Live Fashion Hair, doing shows in Brazil, Las Vegas, and Brooklyn with Davines. Off the stage he helped rebuild a barbershop in the favelas of Brazil for a man who lost his daughter to a stray bullet and his shop to fire... surprising him on stage with the keys in front of 5,000 people. He has also collaborated with Disney and Pixar on the film Soul, runs an annual mentorship retreat, and gives free haircuts to the homeless through a mobile barber program. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeHow to build a brand before anyone is watching. Why authenticity closes million dollar deals better than any suit. The dopamine hack Byrd uses to help creatives grow. And the live idea Byrd and Corey cooked up on the couch that might just become the next big thing.Follow Byrd: @byrdmena on Instagram Special cameo: @ale_wlff on Instagram Co-host: @genochapman on Instagram Hosted by: @hairdustry on Instagram Learn more: Sharp Fade | Live Fashion HairSubscribe to Your Day Off wherever you listen. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026, launching the same day as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This marks the first new Call of Duty game on Nintendo hardware in years, and it could be one of the biggest third-party tests for Switch 2 yet. Tonight, we're breaking down what Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 means, why day-one support matters, how crossplay could change the conversation, and whether this is the start of a real third-party shift for Nintendo. Activision says Modern Warfare 4 is being built for current-gen hardware, with the campaign centered on a conflict on the Korean Peninsula and a new version of DMZ included. The only way to build the next big thing is to stop trying to copy the last one. In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael Mogill sits down with David Vonderhaar, studio lead at Bullet Farm and former studio design director for the Call of Duty franchise, to unpack what it really takes to innovate in a world obsessed with replication. From navigating harsh feedback from passionate audiences to building a studio from the ground up after two decades inside a billion-dollar franchise, David shares the mindset, courage, and conviction required to do things on your own terms. This is a conversation about originality, resilience, and the cost of choosing the harder path. Here's what you'll learn: Why true breakthroughs come from being original, not from copying what's already working How to keep teams engaged under pressure without burning them out What it takes to bet on yourself when walking away from a sure thing If you want to build something that lasts, you have to be willing to build it before anyone else believes in it.
