John Linden: Making NFT Games Mainstream

Hello Metaverse

NFT games is the new topic that's been gaining major momentum in the metaverse/web 3 conversation. The fundamentals of NFT games is that the ownership model of game assets are user owned and transactions are encoded on the blockchain. This creates a utility value for NFTs where it can actually live in an environment where it brings tangible value to people, rather than just being say a jpeg piece of digital art that's hard to show off. The magic of NFT games shows through the economic opportunities that it creates for people. A simple example is Axie Infinity which is the most popular NFT game right now. In the game, people can buy these axies, which are these adorable pet creatures that you can train to get better and better at battles. As your axie wins more battles, it appreciates in monetary value. Based on the work you do ‘training' axies, you can make money off of your hard earned work (through the appreciation of that asset). In fact, a huge fraction of the population in the Philippines have started to rely on playing axie infinity as their main source of income. While the Axie example is straightforward, as you can imagine, for more sophisticated games and experiences, the infrastructure to power these transactions gets more complex.  In this episode, we will explore the building blocks to help foster the NFT game ecosystem for developers, players, brands, influencers, etc.ABOUT THE GUESTJohn Linden is the CEO of Mythical, a next-generation game technology studio creating universal economies driven by player ownership of NFTs with utility. Prior to Mythical, John was the President of Seismic Games (acquired by Niantic Labs), developer of Marvel Strike Force and Magic the Gathering: Valor's Reach. Prior to Seismic Games, he was a Studio Head at Activision Blizzard on the Call of Duty and Skylanders franchises. Before entering the games industry, John was the Co-Founder / CTO at Adknowledge and at OpenX and built his own startups, Planet Alumni (acquired by Reunion.com) and Litmus Media (acquired by Think Partnership)SHOW NOTES[5:50] What are NFT games and how do they make games better for people?[13:10] Understanding collectables culture[16:10] Economic engine behind NFT games[18:00] How to have zero gas fees[23:15] Developer interest in building game economies on the blockchain[25:50] Focusing on assets over tokens[29:10] How can NFT games live on the Apple Store?[31:10] New roles and jobs that NFT games can create[36:55] Why are NFT games becoming mainstream now?

This week the show takes place on Thanksgiving and despite being tired and full of food, Fred and Trees manage a full episode. Along with various adventures, the recently released Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City are discussed (with no real spoilers). On the gaming front Trees is creating a new civilization in No Man's Sky, decking out slick designs in Forza Horizon 5, and building rockets on social media with the game pass title Next Space Rebels. Fred is continuing to enjoy Final Fantasy VII Remake, went back to Treyarch's first developed Call of Duty 3, and enjoying a listener suggested anime High Score Girl. In fact, that's where this week's closing song comes from!

On this episode of The Daily Fix, a neuroscience engineer is training some rats to play Doom using a custom VR setup. But it's not the giant headset kind of VR that we humans are used to. This setup has a big round ball the rats can run on top of, which translates to movement in the game. Pretty cool! And what's the purpose of this? Science, duh. Actually learning how the brains of animals work not only benefits our relationship with the animal kingdom, we can learn a lot about ourselves and how our brains work. In other regular gaming news, Microsoft has announced what Xbox Games with Gold subscribers are getting next month, and you know...they're not bad. Don't expect the new Call of Duty or Battlefield in there, but some solid picks of games from the past ten years. And hey, they're free. And finally, we got some Mario movie news. The internet was set ablaze when it was announced that Chris Pratt was playing Mario. Many had the fair question of "what does Chris Pratt even sound like playing Mario?" and a producer on the movie may have answered that. Obviously we don't have an audio sample, but Pratt might be doing Mario sans Italian accent. But we don't actually know, yet.

Call of Duty: Vanguard has seen a significant drop in sales from last year's outing, specifically in the UK, but it's easy not farfetched to think that drop is happening in other territories. Is this simply Call of Duty fatigue, better competition from other games this year, or is this indicative of troubles within Activision bleeding in and affecting products and reception to them? DELETE WHEN DONE - 0:23:08 1:00:32 1:38:11 Sometimes, very easy things turn out to be very hard for no apparent reason. Apparently, this mantra rings true for Rockstar, which released its acclaimed PlayStation 2 trilogy of Grand Theft Auto games on PS4 and PS5 in... well... a pretty shocking state. It's a big story (and a damn shame), and we discuss it in-depth. Rockstar ain't the only one hurting, though. Activision isn't only beleaguered from top-to-bottom due to claims of impropriety galore, but because its new Call of Duty game is apparently selling softer than any entry in the series in some 15 years. That, too, is a big story (although less of a damn shame), and we discuss that in-depth, too. Plus: Delays! Six Days in Fallujah, Saints Row, and Pragmata have all been pushed, while WB's crossover fighter MultiVersus is real, and League of Legends goes all-in on expanding its universe on PlayStation. We wrap up, as we always do, with listener inquiries. Will the effects of COVID and the chip shortage extend the PS5 generation? Is it possible that PlayStation's Spider-Man will appear in the new Spiderverse film? How do we feel about detective-style games? Can we instruct a listener on how to properly execute his first kiss? But she had an intuitive understanding of the practices that a PO needs. She went through the PO training and learned quickly how to help the team break down work. However, there was a challenge for the team that she was able to help with that goes far beyond the default PO responsibilities. Listen in to learn how this PO stepped up and helped the team deal with a critical problem. The Bad Product Owner: The Know-it-all PO, and how to handle that anti-pattern When PO's think they know everything there is to know, they are less likely to listen to the team and help them with concrete issues they face. When PO's think they can tell the team how to do the work, things get complicated. In this segment, we explore the anti-patterns that emerge in a team that has to work with such a PO, and discuss how Scrum Masters can help those teams and the PO get to a more collaborative way of working.  Are you having trouble helping the team work well with their Product Owner? We've put together a course to help you work on the collaboration team-product owner. You can find it at bit.ly/coachyourpo. 18 modules, 8+ hours of modules with tools and techniques that you can use to help teams and PO's collaborate. Link to Article: https://bit.ly/32e1cK9 - https://cnn.it/3kJ41sYIt's About Time I Address Battlefield and CoD!The publisher of the video game Call of Duty: Vanguard has issued an apology after receiving criticism from Muslim players who noticed pages of the Quran lying on the floor during a gameplay scene. The pages from Islam's holy book were seen scattered on the floor. In Islam, the Quran is considered sacred and cannot be placed on the floor or on any dirty surface.Players who recognized the religious text posted photos of the scene on Twitter, with one gamer demanding the game's developers and publishers "remove the pages immediately.""Call of Duty is made for everyone. There was insensitive content to the Muslim community mistakenly included last week, and has since been removed from the game," an Activision spokesperson said in a statement to CNN on Friday.Battlefield 2042 is running into some issues on Xbox Series X, with players reporting that the game completely crashes their console in some scenarios. Developer DICE has confirmed that this is a system-level problem on Microsoft's side that is also affecting games like FIFA, Madden, and NBA 2K.DICE will release an update on November 17 to resolve the crashing issues, the studio said in a blog post (via Battlefield Bulletin). The update is optional until November 23, when it becomes mandatory.Players experiencing the issue don't have to wait that long to get the update, however. Everyone can join the Xbox Insider Program (sign up here) and opt in to the Omega Ring. From there, the update should be made available to help improve the experience.Battlefield 2042 launched with early access and with its 10-hour EA Play trial on November 12. The game's servers struggled with rubber-banding and "persistence data" errors, but the experience is generally smoother now ahead of its official release date on November 19.It might not be the only new shooter around for much longer, either, as rumors suggest that Halo Infinite's multiplayer will be released today, November 15, to celebrate Xbox's 20th anniversary.Support the show (https://bit.ly/2XdAlJC)

This week, we're breaking down two great tastes that taste great together: The many faces of Call of Duty: Vanguard, and the newly expanded Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We also give a metric ton of iOS recommendations, and argue about the Mario Bros' Mushroom Kingdom citizenship. Other games discussed: Inscryption, Devil's Gambit, The Binding of Isaac: Repentence, Bloodshore, Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl, Super Stickman Golf 3+, Clap Hanz Golf, Solitarica, SNKRX, Fire Emblem Heroes

Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast

We have some awesome news for long-time PlayStation fans: The Mother of Uncharted, Amy Hennig, is finally returning with something new. Seriously. And it's just in the nick of time, since it's been a staggering 10 years since Uncharted 3 launched on PS3, which was her last brainchild. Heck, it's been nearly eight years since she left Naughty Dog! So it's great to know what she's working on next, but there's a catch, of course: She's making a Marvel game. And thus, both the excitement and complaining begin in earnest, and naturally, we must take part. Other news also crossed our desk this week, including the $50 million loss Take Two is taking on a cancelled game codenamed Volt, the going-public nature of publisher Devolver Digital (which Sony now owns 5% of), the potential rise of a true AAA console game out of China, Call of Duty 2022 rumors, and so much more. We also get into listener questions, as is our wont. Will Sony ever create a dedicated PC launcher? Did Guardians of the Galaxy benefit greatly from not being overexposed? Is there a stigma attached with Game Pass games? Did Chris accidentally leave his "jerk tissues" in-frame? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
