My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie R Schover, author of the book Fission. Leslie is a clinical psychologist and brings her knowledge of people and relationships to her fiction writing. She spent most of her career at the Cleveland Clinic and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She published three self-help books and created a digital health company to educate people with cancer about sex and fertility. Will2Love.com won a 2019 Innovation Prize in the Astellas C 3 Changing Cancer Care contest. Her first published novel, Fission: A Novel of Atomic Heartbreak draws on her parents' stories of Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project and on revelations of Soviet spies there. She lives in Houston, Texas with her faithful dog, Luc.   In my book review, I stated that Fission is a wonderful historical fiction. Although set during WWII, this book takes place completely within the United States as we follow Doris and her husband Rob to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Doris' husband is tapped to work on the Manhattan Project, a top-secret program to create the first atomic bomb.   As a reluctant young mother and bride, Doris first has to decide if she will move to Oak Ridge or continue her education. When she finally moves to Oak Ridge, she has to figure out her place in a world very different from Chicago. Will being Jewish be something to overcome? Will her husband's lack of education stop him from advancing? Will Doris figure out her role as wife and mother? What will she do when romance comes knocking - and not from her husband?   I was excited to learn this story is based loosely on Leslie's parents, which gives an emotional edge to the characters - and you know how I love a good character! A juzgar por su nombre (que hace referencia al culto de Afrodita), era un converso proveniente de un entorno pagano. El hecho de que Pablo lo llama su “colaborador” sugiere que estaba activo en el ministerio, quizá trabajando junto al apóstol en Filipos. La expresión “compañero de milicia” (comparar con Fil. 1:27) probablemente se refiera a un conflicto que Epafrodito habría afrontado para difundir el evangelio y a que estuvo dispuesto incluso a arriesgar su vida (Fil. 2:30). Como “mensajero” (apostolos, en griego) designado por la iglesia de Filipos, Epafrodito fue enviado a atender a Pablo en la cárcel y a ocuparse de cualquier otra necesidad que el apóstol pudiera tener (Fil. 2:25). Fue a él a quien los filipenses confiaron sus ofrendas para Pablo (Fil. 4:18). Esa contribución monetaria era de vital importancia, ya que cualquier alimento, vestimenta, camastro u otras necesidades que los prisioneros romanos tuvieran debían ser provistas por ellos mismos, por familiares o amigos (comparar con Hech. 24:23). Casi al final de su segundo encarcelamiento en Roma, Pablo pidió a Timoteo que procurara “venir antes del invierno” y traer consigo la capa que el apóstol había dejado en Troas (2 Tim. 4:21, 13). Al parecer, Pablo necesitaría ese grueso abrigo en su fría celda. También fue a Epafrodito a quien se encomendó llevar esta epístola en su viaje de regreso a Filipos (ver Elena de White, Los hechos de los apóstoles, p. 395). Tal vez debido a los problemas en Filipos (ver la lección 4), Pablo consideró necesario enviar a Epafrodito de regreso antes de lo previsto, y por ello instó a los filipenses a que lo recibieran “en el Señor con toda alegría” (Fil. 2:29). El apóstol quiso así asegurarse de que no se preocuparan por su situación en la cárcel. También destacó que Epafrodito era la clase de persona que los cristianos debían tener en gran estima, no por su riqueza o condición social, sino por su espíritu de sacrificio al seguir el ejemplo de Jesús (Fil. 2:6-11, 29, 30; comparar con Luc. 22:25-27). La palabra griega que designa la estima o la honra solo aparece unas pocas veces en el Nuevo Testamento. Por ejemplo, para referirse al siervo del centurión que era “muy estimado por su señor” (Luc. 7:2); para quienes se honra ubicándolos en lugar especial en un banquete (Luc. 14:8); y para Jesús como la “preciosa” piedra angular (1 Ped. 2:4, 6). El hecho de que Epafrodito fuera incluido en ese grupo significa, sin duda, que era un hombre fiel.

No hay ningún tema acerca del cual lo sepamos todo. Siempre es posible aprender más. Y eso es aún más cierto acerca de las realidades eternas relacionadas con la Deidad y la Encarnación. Pablo se refiere con frecuencia a la asombrosa condescendencia de Cristo al convertirse en un ser humano, algo que será tema de estudio de los redimidos durante la eternidad. Lee Romanos 8:3; Hebreos 2:14-18; y Hebreos 4:15. ¿Qué caracterizó la condescendencia de Jesús y su adopción de la naturaleza humana? ¿Cómo fue posible que el Hijo eterno de Dios se convirtiera, mediante la operación del Espíritu Santo (ver Luc. 1:35), en un ser divino-humano en el vientre de María? Es increíble que lo infinito y eterno se convirtiera de repente en un ser humano finito, sujeto a la muerte. Este es el meollo de lo que Pablo llama “el misterio de la piedad” (1 Tim. 3:16). En el hermoso himno de Filipenses 2, Pablo desarrolla algunos aspectos de esa condescendencia de un modo más pleno que en ningún otro lugar de la Escritura. “Era de condición divina” (Fil. 2:6). La palabra morfē, traducida como “forma”, o “condición” en distintas versiones bíblicas, se refiere a su naturaleza divina, al hecho de que Jesús era igual en naturaleza al Padre (comparar con Juan 1:1). “Se despojó a sí mismo” (Fil. 2:7). La disposición de Jesús a despojarse de sus prerrogativas divinas para poder ser verdaderamente humano y tentado como nosotros es asombrosa. “Se humilló a sí mismo” (Fil. 2:8). Al asumir la naturaleza humana, Jesús pasó de la supremacía universal a la servidumbre absoluta, lo contrario de lo que pretendía Lucifer. “Muerte, y muerte de cruz” (Fil. 2:8). La crucifixión, la forma más ignominiosa de morir, había sido prevista en el “consejo de paz” (Zac. 6:13) e ilustrada por Moisés al levantar la serpiente (Núm. 21:9; Juan 3:14). Cristo se hizo, pues, “pecado por nosotros, para que nosotros llegásemos a ser justicia de Dios en él” (2 Cor. 5:21). ¿Cómo puede y debe hacernos más humildes y sumisos a Dios el hecho de enfocarnos en lo que Jesús hizo por nosotros en la Cruz; es decir, ver la Cruz como nuestro ejemplo de entrega y humildad?

Juan 21: 20, RV95Te quiero confesar algo: siempre me resultó chocante la forma en la que Juan se autodenomina en su Evangelio. Una y otra vez él repite la expresión  el discípulo a quien Jesús amaba», y al final encontramos esta declaración: «Este es el mismo discípulo que da testimonio de estas cosas, y que las ha escrito. Y sabemos que dice la verdad (Juan 21: 24). En otras palabras, Juan dice: «El discípulo a quien Jesús amaba era yo».¿No te parece un poco presuntuosa esta forma de autodescribirse? Juan nos dice que Judas «era ladrón» y «tenía a su cargo la bolsa del dinero» (Juan 12: 6), Tomás era incrédulo (Juan 20: 24-28) y Pedro tenía un temperamento explosivo (Juan 18: 10). Pero Juan era «el amado».En realidad, aunque a los lectores modernos esta frase nos parece arrogante, si miramos con detenimiento notaremos que cuando Juan se autodenomina «el discípulo a quien Jesús amaba», no lo hace para destacar sus propios atributos, sino las virtudes de Jesús. Jesús es el que ama y no Juan el que era digno de ser amado. El Nuevo Testamento señala que Juan tenía algunos rasgos no muy fáciles de amar. Tenía un carácter de trueno (Marcos 3: 17), probablemente olía a pescado (Luc. 5: 2, 10), deseó que cayera fuego del cielo sobre unos samaritanos incrédulos (Lucas 9: 52-54) y, junto con su manipuladora madre, ambicionaba una posición de prestigio en el reino de Cristo (Mateo 20: 20-28). Pero a pesar de todo esto, Jesús amaba a Juan y lo transformó en un discípulo humilde, afectuoso y amable.Al mirar el año que casi está por concluir, ¿qué tipo de persona pudieran los demás decir que eres? ¿Eres un joven explosivo como Pedro? ¿Fuiste una señorita deshonesta como Judas? ¿O acaso los demás te consideran una persona manipuladora y oportunista? La buena noticia del Evangelio de Juan es que nada de eso importa. Jesús te ama tal como eres y desea transformarte en una persona humilde y amable. Así que la próxima vez que leas que Juan era «el discípulo a quien Jesús amaba» recuerda que él se describió así para que pensemos: «Si Jesús pudo amar a alguien con tantos defectos de carácter como Juan, también puede amarme a mí. Y si el Señor pudo transformar a Juan, también me puede transformar a mí».

Ellos, siguiendo a la estrella, llegaron hasta Jesús y lo adoraron (Mat. 2: 12).Los sacerdotes y los escribas leían y estudiaban las Escrituras. Así que Dios les habló a través de las Escrituras. Pero ellos no respondieron a su mensaje y prefirieron ignorarlo (Mat. 2: 3-5).Los pastores estaban cumpliendo con sus tareas habituales, haciendo su deber, velando sobre sus rebaños. Y Dios les habló mientras estaban de guardia (Luc. 2: 8-12). Ellos siguieron a la letra las indicaciones recibidas y encontraron al Mesías tal y como les había sido anunciado (Luc. 2: 8-12).Simeón y Ana estaban en el templo, sirviendo a Dios, orando y a la escucha de los mensajes divinos. Y Dios les habló personalmente, a través de su Espíritu, de modo que, de manera inesperada, encontraron a Cristo y lo adoraron (Luc 2: 29-37).Estos relatos nos muestran que Dios viene a nosotros y nos transmite sus preciosos mensajes, pero nos encuentra a cada uno donde estamos, y habla a cada uno de modo diferente, en nuestro propio lenguaje, a partir de lo que nosotros sabemos y hacemos para encontrarlo. Pero para reconocer su voz necesitamos corazones abiertos y receptivos.«Los cristianos tenéis una gran ventaja», me decía un profesor japonés, de cultura taoísta, con quien estudiaba la Biblia. «Para vosotros, todas las ideas sobre Dios, todas las nociones de Dios se han concretado en una persona». Sí, en efecto, tenemos una gran ventaja, que no siempre apreciamos. Los cristianos hemos encontrado a Dios en Jesús.Y ahora el desafío de Jesús para nosotros es que aprendamos a encontrarlo también en los otros (Mat. 25: 31-45). Y este desafío, en estas fechas, podríamos formularlo del siguiente modo: que el mensaje de Navidad de que Dios ha venido a visitarnos encarnado en Jesús se encarne en la vida de cada uno de nosotros. En nosotros también Dios desea visitar a su pueblo.Para mí el cristianismo podría resumirse en la puesta en práctica cotidiana del mensaje de Navidad, cada día del año, con cada una de las personas con las que nos encontramos. Hasta el día en que nos visitará de nuevo, para quedarse con nosotros, en la tierra renovada, definitivamente.

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.” Luke 1:30–31Of all the saints throughout the ages, none has proved to be as powerful an evangelist as the Mother of God. While on Earth, she lived a mostly hidden life, demonstrating the perfection of virtue to those closest to her. As a young mother, she cared daily for the needs of her divine Son, constantly pondering the mystery of His Incarnation as it unfolded before her eyes. Her love for her Son, lived out during Jesus' earthly life, overflowed from her Immaculate Heart and continues to do so today.After being assumed body and soul into Heaven, her work did not cease. As Queen of Heaven and Earth, she continues to intercede for her spiritual children, mediating the grace we need to grow in holiness. Throughout history, many Marian apparitions have been reported. While numerous reports have not been formally approved, some have, including the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 to Saint Juan Diego.Following the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521 by Hernán Cortés, the capital was rebuilt into what became Mexico City. Despite the cruelty some Spanish settlers inflicted on the Indigenous people, the Catholic Church, through missionaries and leaders, including Bishop Juan de Zumárraga, sought to protect their rights and dignity while evangelizing them. Many of the Indigenous were understandably suspicious of the missionaries, yet some converted, including a man named Cuauhtlatoatzin, who took the Christian name Juan Diego after his baptism, and his wife, who took the name María Lucía.On December 9, 1531, while walking to Mass and catechism class, Juan Diego passed Tepeyac Hill, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him. She spoke to him in his native language, revealed herself as the Mother of God, and asked for a chapel to be built in her honor on that very spot. When Juan took the message to Bishop Zumárraga, the bishop asked for a sign.On December 12, Juan's uncle fell seriously ill. While hurrying to find a priest for the Last Rites, Juan took a different route to avoid delaying his journey, but the Mother of God appeared again. She assured him that his uncle was already healed and provided the promised sign for the bishop. She instructed Juan to pick roses blooming unseasonably on the hill; when he brought them to the bishop in his tilma, an image of the Virgin, just as Juan had seen her, appeared on his cloak. Juan Diego's tilma now hangs in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Mexico City, fulfilling the Blessed Mother's request.While the miraculous image was awe-inspiring, what followed was even more astounding. Over the next decade, millions of Indigenous people embraced the Christian faith, marking one of the most remarkable mass conversions in Church history—all due to the Blessed Mother's evangelization and intervention. Her love for the Indigenous people and her desire for their salvation brought her to them personally, confirming the truth of the Gospel preached by the Church.As we honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, reflect today on the tender love of the Mother of God. She deeply desired the salvation of the Indigenous people, just as she desires the salvation of all. Pray for her intercession so that millions more around the world may hear and accept God's saving message. Most loving Virgin of Guadalupe, as you looked down from Heaven upon the struggles and suffering of the conquered people of the Aztec Empire, your Immaculate Heart overflowed with compassion for them. As a result, you went to them personally to share the saving message of Your Son. Please pray for me, for the Americas, and for all your children, that we all will be guided to Your Son and come to know His gift of salvation. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
