Este título insólito corresponde, simplemente, a la duración de la pieza, es decir, 4 minutos y 33 segundos. Lo especial de esta composición es que sus tres movimientos no contienen ninguna nota, aparte de la anotación «Tácet»: silencio.El estreno de 4'33" tuvo lugar el 29 de agosto del año 1952 en Wood stock (Nueva York), y constituyó un sonado escándalo. En efecto: el joven pianista David Tudor entró en escena, saludó al público, se instaló ante el piano de cola, lo abrió, esperó los 4 minutos y 33 segundos y lo volvió a cerrar, marcando así el fin de la actuación. Entretanto, nada. Silencio. Un silencio solo interrumpido por las toses nerviosas de los espectadores... hasta que se dieron cuenta de que no había nada más que esperar y abandonaron la sala protestando, frustrados y enfurecidos.Lo más chocante es que, gracias a esa «creación», John Cage se hizo mundialmente famoso, fue solicitado para interpretarla en numerosas ocasiones y hasta para grabarla en discos y CD ¡con diferentes instrumentos!!¿Locura? ¿Extravagancia? ¿Genialidad? ¿Burla? Ha habido reacciones para todos los gustos. No es mi intención aquí ni juzgar al artista ni a sus fans, ni discutir sobre las numerosas virtudes del silencio. Mis reflexiones van en otra dirección: hay silencios que pueden ser bienhechores, muy valiosos y hasta caros, pero hay otros muy poco recomendables, porque no aportan nada bueno.Jesús instó a sus discípulos a compartir el mensaje que él había proclamado a costa de su propia vida: el evangelio no debe ser callado bajo ningún pretexto. Tiene que ser proclamado a todo mundo para que llegue a toda la humanidad y cumpla su misión, antes de que sea demasiado tarde.El apóstol Pablo siente tan a pecho esa responsabilidad, que exclama: «¡Ay de mí, si no anuncio el evangelio!» (1 Cor. 9: 16). Y exhorta al joven Timoteo en estos términos: «Te suplico encarecidamente [...] que prediques la palabra y que instes a tiempo y fuera de tiempo. Redarguye, reprende, exhorta con toda paciencia y doctrina [...]. Cumple tu ministerio» (2 Tim. 4: 1-5).Cuando la historia parece avanzar a ciegas por derroteros inciertos, no es tiempo de silenciar que Jesús ha prometido volver. Sería un silencio demasiado caro. El mundo necesita más que nunca un mensaje de cordura, de solidaridad y de esperanza.Inspírame, Señor, para que sepa romper el silencio cuando convenga.

Por mucho que fuera la primera canción a Capella en llegar al número uno en la lista de los Billboard Hot 100 en los Estados Unidos, y por mucho que mantuviera esa posición varias semanas, ¿cómo no vamos a preocuparnos por el día de mañana en un mundo como el nuestro? ¿Cómo no angustiarnos por el día de mañana si los análisis médicos son preocupantes, si el trabajo es inseguro o si las finanzas no nos llegan para terminar el mes?Veamos. Una cosa es preocuparnos y creo que como cristianos responsables debemos ocuparnos seriamente de nuestro futuro y del de nuestra familia, y otra cosa es angustiarnos. Jesús da por sentado que antes de lanzarnos a un proyecto debemos calcular el costo y no emprender aquello que no podemos asumir: «¿Quién de vosotros, queriendo edificar una torre, no se sienta primero y calcula los gastos, a ver si tiene lo que necesita para acabarla? No sea que, después que haya puesto el cimiento, no pueda acabarla y todos los que lo vean comiencen a hacer burla de él, diciendo: "Este hombre comenzó a edificar y no pudo acabar"» (Luc. 14: 28-30).Angustiarnos es otra cosa. Angustiarnos es dejar que el miedo nos domine. Es perder la serenidad y la confianza en un Dios que promete estar siempre a nuestro lado. La angustia es como esa bola de nieve que, cuando vivíamos cerca de los Alpes, algunos niños lanzaban a la deriva, y que, si no se detenía a tiempo, cada vez se hacía más grande y era capaz de enterrarnos en una avalancha. Para detenerla al principio bastaba pararla con el pie, pero si se la dejaba crecer y tomar velocidad podía ser incalculablemente destructiva.Pablo nos dice casi lo mismo en otras palabras: «Por nada estéis angustiados, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús» (Fil. 4: 6-7).Señor, en estos tiempos de angustia, dame tu paz. Muéstrame cómo puedo superar los desafíos que tengo que enfrentar hoy y ayúdame a irradiar esa serenidad en mi entorno inmediato.

Los hombres quedarán sin aliento por el temor y la expectación de las cosas que sobrevendrán en la tierra... » (Luc. 21:25-26).Los diccionarios definen la angustia como un estado de inquietud, aflicción o congoja intensas, causado por algo que se teme, como la amenaza de una desgracia o de un peligro ante el que nos sentimos impotentes.Esta palabra de Jesús nos llega a través de Lucas, alguien llamado por Pablo «el médico amado» (Col. 4: 14). Este profesional de la salud habla concretamente, en su original griego, de «angustia de las naciones». Los desquiciamientos de la tierra, como signos anunciadores del fin, provocan un estado de alarma que no solamente afecta a los individuos, sino que además crea un inquietante desconcierto a nivel de las naciones, que no saben cómo hacer frente a los problemas que se les vienen encima.Nos hacemos una idea aproximada de lo que Jesús nos anuncia aquí cuando recordamos el impacto causado a nivel mundial en 2020 por la expansión de un brote de coronavirus. La pandemia ocasionó una angustia a nivel de las naciones, de dimensiones planetarias.Es habitual en situaciones de angustia que los individuos nos dejemos dominar por instintos y emociones, especialmente por el miedo. Cuando el pánico nos nubla la razón, cuesta volver a recuperar la serenidad, porque la sensatez necesita tiempo para imponerse y las circunstancias extremas suelen dictar una urgencia que no deja tiempo para la reflexión.Cuando estamos angustiados, todo nuestro organismo sufre: el corazón se acelera, sentimos presión en el pecho, la respiración se altera, hay quienes no pueden controlar sus temblores, etcétera. Y cuando la angustia contagia a todo un país, las repercusiones psíquicas son aún más peligrosas: las noticias contradictorias nos hacen temernos lo peor, y a la angustia se añade la ansiedad por no saber qué nos depara el futuro.Lejos de Dios, la angustia nos acecha, como ya había advertido Moisés a Israel si se apartaba de sus caminos: «Tendrás la vida pendiente de un hilo; y estarás aterrado de noche y de día, y no tendrás seguridad de tu vida» (Deut. 28: 66)Pero las palabras de Jesús recogidas por Lucas nos invitan a enfrentar hasta las peores situaciones colectivas con serenidad: «Cuando estas cosas comiencen a suceder, erguíos y levantad vuestra cabeza, porque vuestra redención está cerca» (Luc. 21:28). Aun en situaciones de emergencia, cuando lo normal es sentirse confundido, asustado o irritable, cuando el miedo se instala en torno nuestro por la «angustia de gentes», Jesús nos invita a compartir nuestra paz y nuestra esperanza, porque nuestra redención se acerca. 

Esta madrugada hemos dedicado el programa al prefijo 'crono-', del griego 'khronos', que significa tiempo. Hemos hablado con el periodista y ensayista Sergio Fanjul, que a inicios de noviembre publicó 'Cronofobia', un libro en el que invita a reflexionar sobre nuestra relación con el tiempo y, sobre todo, sobre los miedos que nos deja a su paso. También con el cineasta Fernando González Molina, que acaba de terminar de rodar 'Cronos', una película que reconstruye los días posteriores a los atentados terroristas de Barcelona de 2017 desde la perspectiva de las fuerzas de seguridad. Y como cada jueves hemos tenido 'Destello' con Antonio Lucas, y nos hemos llevado 'El Faro por el mundo' hasta París, con la corresponsal Lucía Riera, que nos ha contado cómo es la relación de los franceses con el envejecimiento.

While on Earth, she lived a mostly hidden life, demonstrating the perfection of virtue to those closest to her. As a young mother, she cared daily for the needs of her divine Son, constantly pondering the mystery of His Incarnation as it unfolded before her eyes. Her love for her Son, lived out during Jesus' earthly life, overflowed from her Immaculate Heart and continues to do so today.After being assumed body and soul into Heaven, her work did not cease. As Queen of Heaven and Earth, she continues to intercede for her spiritual children, mediating the grace we need to grow in holiness. Throughout history, many Marian apparitions have been reported. While numerous reports have not been formally approved, some have, including the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 to Saint Juan Diego.Following the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521 by Hernán Cortés, the capital was rebuilt into what became Mexico City. Despite the cruelty some Spanish settlers inflicted on the Indigenous people, the Catholic Church, through missionaries and leaders, including Bishop Juan de Zumárraga, sought to protect their rights and dignity while evangelizing them. Many of the Indigenous were understandably suspicious of the missionaries, yet some converted, including a man named Cuauhtlatoatzin, who took the Christian name Juan Diego after his baptism, and his wife, who took the name María Lucía.On December 9, 1531, while walking to Mass and catechism class, Juan Diego passed Tepeyac Hill, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him. She spoke to him in his native language, revealed herself as the Mother of God, and asked for a chapel to be built in her honor on that very spot. When Juan took the message to Bishop Zumárraga, the bishop asked for a sign.On December 12, Juan's uncle fell seriously ill. While hurrying to find a priest for the Last Rites, Juan took a different route to avoid delaying his journey, but the Mother of God appeared again. She assured him that his uncle was already healed and provided the promised sign for the bishop. She instructed Juan to pick roses blooming unseasonably on the hill; when he brought them to the bishop in his tilma, an image of the Virgin, just as Juan had seen her, appeared on his cloak. Juan Diego's tilma now hangs in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Mexico City, fulfilling the Blessed Mother's request.While the miraculous image was awe-inspiring, what followed was even more astounding. Over the next decade, millions of Indigenous people embraced the Christian faith, marking one of the most remarkable mass conversions in Church history—all due to the Blessed Mother's evangelization and intervention. Her love for the Indigenous people and her desire for their salvation brought her to them personally, confirming the truth of the Gospel preached by the Church.As we honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, reflect today on the tender love of the Mother of God. She deeply desired the salvation of the Indigenous people, just as she desires the salvation of all. Pray for her intercession so that millions more around the world may hear and accept God's saving message. Most loving Virgin of Guadalupe, as you looked down from Heaven upon the struggles and suffering of the conquered people of the Aztec Empire, your Immaculate Heart overflowed with compassion for them. As a result, you went to them personally to share the saving message of Your Son. Please pray for me, for the Americas, and for all your children, that we all will be guided to Your Son and come to know His gift of salvation. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. Jennifer outlines a similar but more modern journey for Lakrids by Bülow, founded in 2007 to elevate Scandinavian licorice. Despite Germany being the company's primary market, unexpected U.S. DTC growth revealed strong demand, but the brand needed to rethink its labels and flavor cues for American consumers. Both Lucia and Jennifer discuss major operational hurdles for selling in the U.S., including strict packaging rules, and a fragmented U.S. market that requires regional strategies and a thoughtful pricing architecture.
