It's Halloween, so we decided to do a "scary" one! Podcaster, author, and emissary from the City of Brotherly Love Trevor Strunk joins to discuss Robert Rodriguez's 1998 Breakfast-Club-Meets-Body-Snatchers riff The Faculty. Boasting a memorable cast of young up-and-comers and a script written by Scream-scribe Kevin Williamson, the film is both playfully self-aware and slyly subversive in its explorations of social hierarchies and the omnipresent 90s fixation with conformity to the monoculture. We begin by exploring how the film updates the Body Snatcher narrative, borrowing (and explicitly citing) the literary works of Robert A. Heinlen and Jack Finney, as well as both previous Body Snatchers film adaptations by Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman. Then, we contend with some of the movie's most intriguing premises - its assertions about capitalist hierarchies and how they maintain the oppression of marginalized out-groups as well as how American society impedes gratifying sexual expression (especially for women). Finally, we examine the deceptively cynical ending and what it suggests about the stickiness of the neoliberal order, its structural hold on the horizons of our sociopolitical imagination. Just over a year after the runaway success of his previous effort, The Sixth Sense, Oscar-nominated writer/director M. Night Shyamalan decided to follow it up with this genuinely unique thriller which had decent reviews and solid box office but was considered a bit of a disappointment mainly because the story was not at all what many audiences expected. However over time, it developed enough of a following that the filmmaker evetually decided to make a proper sequel. This is the strange tale of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), a mild-mannered security officer who has just survived a horrific train crash. No one really understands why or how he was the ONLY survivor of an incident which resulted in the deaths of every one else on board, except......one eccentric comic book art collected/store owner named Elijah Price (Samuel) who might have a theory. Their lives become intertwined and what results is a genuinely original tale of good and evil. Episode 116. In today's episode, Meredith and Kaity talk about Devil (2010). They go in-depth about this M Night Shyamalan claustrophobic "who-done-it" story that takes place in a small space. Kaity and Meredith also give their non-expert opinion on what age is appropriate to show this movie to kids. Intro and Outro music by the talented A Corten, and art provided by Javon Blair.
Do you see dead people? Spoiler alert - this creepy little kid sure does. This week on Rewind Rethink, we revisit the twisty classic that made M. Night Shyamalan a household name. Is The Sixth Sense as good as we remember, or has it become a total cringe fest?

In Season 2 of Show Me Something Wrong, we're focusing on rip offs, unofficial sequels, and wrong adaptations! To wrap up this season of the pod, Dave shows Guy MIZERY from 2023, directed by Daddy Love. This gender-swapped version of Stephen King classic MISERY is a true Tubi trip to hell, replete with a complete lack of foley, incomprehensible plotting, and fumbled lines left in the edit. Dave tries to make sense of who Daddy Love is, and we discover that this not only rips off just one film, but also M. Night Shyamalan's SPLIT. What a dumb way to finish off a very dumb season. The Sixth Sense was one of the biggest movies of the year, second only to The Phantom Menace. And since it's Halloween and Julia had never seen it before, we thought it was time to take a second look. A movie best remembered for its plot twist (and the meticulous build up to it), The Sixth Sense is nonetheless at its core a drama about grief. Once you know the ending, the experience of the movie changes. But is it still good? Does M. Night Shyamalan's breakthrough film deserve its status on the 1999 Mount Rushmore? For our second go-round on The Sixth Sense, John and Julia invited comedian, actor, and singer Sooz Kempner - who didn't understand the ending to The Sixth Sense when she saw it at the age of 14 - to talk plot twists, child actors, Bruce Willis, and jump scares. You can find Sooz on Bluesky @soozuk Her website is https://www.soozkempner.co.uk/

How do you write a love story where the central characters can't touch? Well, if anybody can, it's Nicholas Sparks. “This is a difficult love story to pull off,” Sparks told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott about his new novel Remain, which he collaborated on with director M. Night Shyamalan, who is adapting the book into a feature film. “One of the reasons we're doing this, of course, is, hey, maybe some of my readers who don't see M. Night films will go see Remain. Maybe some of his fans who would never think of reading something that I write, maybe they will give that a shot.” And they should, because Remain is a haunting love story that is both tonally very much a Nicholas Sparks novel, but also wholly different. It also helps to visualize the actors playing the characters in the film adaptation. “If someone picks it up and they say, ‘Tate, I wonder what he looks like.' Well, Google Jake Gyllenhaal, that'll help.” While the impact of Spark's work is “something I very seldom think about,” he does like when he'll hear a passing reference to one of his books in pop culture. “I'm the first to giggle when The Notebook comes up on Big Bang Theory or wherever it comes up. It's a lot of fun. It makes me smile.” Subscribe to my newsletter: https://link.newsweek.com/join/for-the-culture Follow me: https://linktr.ee/halanscott Subscribe to Newsweek's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/newsweek See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

MONSTER PARTY REVISITS THE ERA OF ROLLERBLADING, BEANIE BABIES, THE MACARENA… AND TERROR!!!! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD honor the last part of a decade that brought us so many seminal films. If you thought our previous '90s HORROR episode was “da bomb,” you're guaranteed to go nuclear when you hear… '90s HORROR VOL. 2!!! The 1990s were an exciting and innovative time for horror films, with the latter half of the decade boasting some downright game-changers. With THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, we saw the explosion of the found footage genre that is still popular to this day, and the Japanese showed us the dangers of sitting too close to the TV with RINGU! If that didn't change your horror movie game enough, David Fincher gave us the ultimate worst-case mystery box scenario in SEVEN, Wes Craven made horror meta with SCREAM, and M. Night Shyamalan peaked early with THE SIXTH SENSE. But we're not even close to this episode's EVENT HORIZON! We'll also look at a creepy ice cream vendor (aren't they all?), a castle freak, some self-improvement cannibals, a Rubik's Cube of death, an evil genie, Chucky's better half, a Hardrock Cafe for vampires, and so much more! Too bad all of it was lost in the devastation caused by Y2K. Joining us for this second dose of '90s chills is an award-winning friend of the show, and really, the only guest for this subject. He was the editor in chief of the legendary FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine, the genius behind the blog, IT CAME FROM..., the writer/director/producer of the IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS longform documentary series, as well as the '80s sci-fi documentary IN SEARCH OF TOMORROW. His latest project is the shockingly episode appropriate mega doc, IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS: 1995-1999! Honestly, what were the odds?! Please welcome back the always scintillating… DAVID WEINER!! CONTENT WARNING: This episode is about "The Happening," a film in which a toxin compels people to kill themselves in a variety of weird and novel ways. If you are sensitive to the topic of suicide or self-harm, this might not be for you. Emmy-winning writer and comedian Josh Gondelman visits the Pod Universe to re-examine M. Night Shyamalan's disastrous disaster movie, "The Happening." What makes this potentially poignant thriller so disappointing, and how would Josh do it differently if he could remake it after the COVID-19 outbreak? Also, should Ted from the movie "Ted" be involved? (No. No he shouldn't. We're trying to make a serious movie over here.) This supernatural thriller became a cultural phenomenon, blending chilling atmosphere with one of cinema's most unforgettable twist endings. We explore Haley Joel Osment's powerful performance as a boy who “sees dead people,” Bruce Willis's understated turn, and how the film redefined modern ghost stories. From its iconic reveals to its lasting influence on psychological horror, we dive into why The Sixth Sense still resonates more than two decades later.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:https://www.patreon.com/ConnerandSmith?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan

THE STUCKMANIZED INTERVIEW!! From YouTube Critic to Horror Director! Why He Quit Reviewing "Bad" Movies & the Personal Trauma That Inspired SHELBY OAKS. — Greg Alba sits down with Chris Stuckmann for one of our most personal, craft-focused conversations yet. We cover the full journey from YouTube film critic to feature filmmaker, the decision to stop reviewing movies he dislikes (and the rise of “performative mocking” online), and how fatherhood and a former religious background (ex–Jehovah's Witness) shaped his storytelling. We dig into SHELBY OAKS (theatrical release Oct 24, with early Thurs night shows Oct 23): inspirations like Lake Mungo and Noroi: The Curse, why Japanese horror gets under the skin, M. Night Shyamalan's influence (faith vs. fear), and how Chris writes with the edit/shot list in mind. Production talk galore: 20-day indie shoot in Ohio, a year of prep, DP Andrew Baird, why the First AC (focus puller) is the unsung set hero, PAs saving the day, and how star Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter) elevated scenes so intensely the chest mic captured her heartbeat; plus working with Sarah Durn and Keith David (The Thing, They Live). Industry context: Mike Flanagan producing, NEON distributing, The Newton Brothers scoring, festival reactions (Fantastic Fest, LA premiere), and how being on set changed the way Chris now reads reviews and watches indie films. We also hit fun stuff: Metal Gear Solid directional-mic jokes, Tarantino vs. Scorsese-style self-watching, first horror clips he'll show his kids (Jaws, Jurassic Park moments), comic-book horror he'd love to tackle (Clayface, Scarface, Scarecrow), and why he still feels like “a guy from Ohio who got it done.” If you're into horror filmmaking, YouTube career arcs, screenwriting, directing, faith and art, or modern indie distribution, this one's for you. Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched The Village and next time we'll be back with Lady in the Water. The Village is an isolated, idyllic(?) settlement deep in the forest, surrounded by dangerous, territorial, but ultimately peaceable creatures called, by the Villagers, The Ones We Don't Speak Of. In this movie a generation of elders use fear and love to control a new generation of children, but the promises of the outside world (and the increasing danger and dissatisfaction inside the village itself) is too strong a call. The Village is a movie about where Peace and Innocence come from, how evils are movtivated by love and fear, but without a solid grasp on the answers to those questions. Sometimes boring and slow, sometimes exciting and beaituful, and often shallow and patronizing. From the moment Billy Rock of Do You Like Apples? watched Signs with his family as a kid, its themes on faith and dedication to genre thrills served as a starting point for his growing interest in films. Twenty years later, Rock brings the M. Night Shyamalan alien thriller to the Take-Up, where Josh and Andrew swing away with their own polarizing thoughts on its intrigue and M. Night's up-and-down career. Don't worry, the trio have more to say beyond aliens having a weakness to water and wooden doors. Then, Josh and Andrew continue onto One More Thing, recommending local St. Louis pride event Tower Grove Pride (and a very groovy booth featured there) along with continuing their extraterrestrial talk with FX's Alien: Earth.Next week, bat an eyelash for our hosts going deep into One Battle After Another, PTA's action-comedy-thriller that is quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed and talked about movies of the year. Until then, read on at thetake-up.com and follow us @thetakeupstl on Instagram, Twitter, Letterboxd, and Facebook.
