On this episode of the Nonsense Podcast, we kick things off with a Kelly Fact that immediately causes chaos — Jingle Bells was actually written as a Thanksgiving song before being hijacked by Christmas. FNBob and Henvincible struggle to sing the lyrics without defaulting to the Batman smells version, which sends FNBob into a mini-rant about the complete disrespect of Thanksgiving and why the holiday desperately needs better movies and music. From there, the show rolls straight into a breakdown of the Video Game Awards, or as FNBob lovingly calls them, the Expedition 33 Awards, after the game seemingly swept the entire night. The boys react to some of the biggest trailers, with Henvincible hyped for a new Tomb Raider, while FNBob gets ready to suit back up as the Blue Bomber in a new Mega Man. That naturally turns into FNBob declaring Capcom the greatest game studio of all time, defending why they don't rush out sequels and reminding everyone that having the best IPs in gaming history takes time to do right. To wrap things up, with the year winding down and award season in full swing, FNBob announces the long-awaited return of The Bobbies. Categories are revealed, polls are coming, and it's officially time to look back at the wild moments that made Nonsense Season 4 what it is.

As Lord Cognito long predicted, the AI conversation reached a breaking point online when people saw one of the industry's golden children announced that they'll be using generative AI for their game's development. That team is Larian Studios who is responsible for the Divinity franchise alongside the incredible Baldur's Gate 3. The CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke, said that it will be used for mostly pre-production stuff along the lines of whiteboxing or even company e-mails. However, he also let it slip that concept art ideation will be part of that process as an optional tool. Well, social media did not like this at all. It has turned into one of the most split topics to round out 2025. So, where do the Dukes stand? Matty, a longtime critic of AI's usage in development beyond a tool, happens to be a massive Larian fan. Does he bend the knee? What of Lord Cognito who always expected this? Does he blink at such a revelation? Perhaps, it's all overblown. There is a reality where we're years down the line and Larian is on a long list of developers who are all doing the same thing. 2025 Show Notes addendum: With C1E100, you just heard how Ch 1 ends. Now, hear how Ch 1 began!   Also, C1E100 ends with a production deliberately designed to be as close to the much much MUCH worse production quality of the original episodes. With today's rerun, you can compare it to the C1E100 ending to see how well or how poorly 45yr old "2025 St. John" did at emulating and impersonating that clunky, and untrained, but "starry-eyed", "pocket full of dreams" 36yr old St. John from C1E1. I definitely want to know what you think at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com or on social media or Discord! Lastly, for as atrocious as the production quality is on this Dec 2016 production (Jan 2017 release), it is actually the [by far] superior version of the episode. In Oct 2016, I produced beta versions of the first four episodes, and shared them under the pseudonym of "Disco Santa's House of Impossible Conundrums" so I could put them out there for a very limited audience to solicit feedback without a mass release (this was before I was using cloud storage, mind you). The final releases of those four episodes were amended based on the feedback received from everyone from Mike Levy of XVGM, to Pieness64, to even Stephen Hill of NPR's decades-running New Age / Space / World / Ambient late-night FM radio program: Hearts of Space. Well, recently, I found the original beta versions of those first four episodes , and here is a Google Drive link to the episode 1 beta - the only NNR production to use an alternate version of the "St. John NNR shout". The version we ended up going with was recorded during the episode 2 beta and applied to everything thereafter. So this episode 1 beta is the only time in show history where an episode opens with an alternate St. John NNR shout - and boy is it pathetic! This one was recorded with me sitting down. The ep 2 beta shout (which eventually became the "official shout") was recorded standing up. Here's a Google Drive link to that original Oct 2016 Ep 1 beta: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FXWu6EsHeveev4h65yKcLkww7jAPPMtA/view?usp=drive_link In fact, here's a link to the entire "Disco Santa" folder, with the Oct 2016 beta versions of all of the first four episodes: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eueCDmOikIdTXxK_s6VDsWd3Z4QImZeu?usp=drive_link --------------------------------------------------- orig show notes:   The moment has finally come - the Channel 1 podcast is HERE!    Today's broadcast is Episode 1 for ThemeThursday, January 5th, 2017.

The Game Awards have come and gone, leaving in its wake a whirlwind of game announcements, release date reveals, and fresh perspectives on our industry. Indeed, there's something for everyone, a draw for all comers. For starters, what's new? Two Star Wars offerings, Larian's secret Divinity project, Jonathan Blow's long-awaited Order of the Sinking Star, a sequel to Remedy's Control, Toshihiro Nagoshi's anticipated Yakuza rival Gang of Dragon, two Tomb Raider games in the form of a remake and something unseen, a Cyberpunk-like called NO LAW, and even Mega Man 12 -- well, Mega Man Dual Override, anyway -- to keep Colin fed, and more beyond that. And new looks, too, at PlayStation games like Saros and 4:LOOP, as well as Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Exodus, and Phantom Blade 0. And then there are the awards themselves, and the pomp and circumstance, and... well... there's a lot to discuss! Plus, we have all of the non-TGA happenings from the past week, too. PlayStation Wrap-Up is live, Deviation's cancelled second party shooter has leaked, London Studio's cancelled multiplayer game has seemingly reemerged under a new team, Call of Duty might be in trouble, and so on. Then: Listener inquiries! Could MLB: The Show succeed on PC with a Football Manager-style experience? Does Netflix really see no value in WB's gaming assets? Is a rumored $1 million for three minutes of advertising at The Game Awards too much? Remember when Dustin called DW from Arthur Double D? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:27:06 - Sacred Compliments0:33:32 - A happy write in for once0:45:45 - Double D0:48:04 - Slandering the English1:01:45 - Glass Snapple1:09:54 - The Game Awards overall thoughts1:25:51 - Pragmata1:30:02 - Tank Rat1:33:16 - Bradley the Badger1:37:49 - Stupid Never Dies1:42:15 - Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic1:50:40 - Divinity1:57:23 - 4LOOP2:04:34 - Coven of the Chickenfoot2:08:56 - Ontos2:13:45 - Resident Evil Requiem2:15:35 - Order of the Sinking Star2:24:09 - Exodus2:26:48 - Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons2:27:55 - Control Resonant2:35:28 - Gang of Dragon2:41:22 - Street Fighter movie2:45:11 - Lego Batman2:47:39 - Tomb Raider2:56:09 - Saros2:58:32 - NO LAW3:03:56 - DMC Season 23:04:20 - Ace Combat 83:06:40 - Star Wars: Galactic Racer3:07:37 - Out of Words3:10:33 - Phantom Blade 03:12:02 - Mega Man: Dual Override3:20:41 - Highguard3:34:27 - PlayStation Wrap-Up 20253:52:14 - PlayStation 20264:02:32 - Can we thank Flight Sim for Xbox on PlayStation4:09:26 - Deviation's cancelled game has leaked4:24:06 - Ex-London Studio's game reemerges4:35:37 - Maybe Call of Duty isn't doing so great?4:54:32 - Capcom wants to grow their smaller IPs4:58:08 - New PS+ games5:02:35 - What We've Been Playing (Metal Eden, Dying Light: The Beast, Skate Story, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Metroid Prime 4, YARG)5:32:21 - Rise of actors in games5:42:19 - Would Chris and Dustin play sports games?5:50:22 - PlayStation making a Football Manager game5:56:27 - Is WB games "worthless”?6:04:28 - $1 Million for a Game Awards trailer6:09:14 - Refunding Game Pass Learn more about your ad choices. She was a lovely person, and through these accounts, it's not entirely too late to [at least sorta kinda] get to know her! She was my mom's sister's daughter - and if I'm being completely honest, she reminded me more of mom than of aunt Karen. I suppose, in a way, she was the closest thing my brother and I had to a sister.   2) Links to C1E1 and C2E20!   I'll upload each this month as reruns. The "Episode Proper" portion was recorded using Audacity in Fedora Workstation like the others, but was recorded using an M-Audio MobilePre XLR-to-USB audio interface and an AudioTechnica AT2020 microphone deliberately used improperly in order to emulate my much much poorer production techniques as of 2016. An AT2020 actually failed during this recording. Fortunately, I had a second AT2020, so I was able to finish the recording without substantial variation. The first line recorded with the second AT2020 was "I'm John Wedgeworth – thanks for listening."    You can also find all of our audio episodes on https://archive.org/details/@nerd_noise_radio as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    We are now a member podcast as well. NERD NOISE RERUNS: C1E40 - "Listener Picks - vol. 1" (orig released 12/20/2018)

2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 40 for Theme Thursday, December 20th, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway.    Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1  ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS:     http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss    Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode:    [LINK]    Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. You can find them here:    Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels Podcast Feed    Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 podcast    Nerd Noise Radio is now available on Twitch as well! Episodes 21 and forward will be uploaded as they're released, with the backlog of earlier episodes to follow. Be on the lookout for Part 2 to our listener pick party! Part 2 will be a Channel F "F-isode", and will be in a completely different format. Date TBD, though as soon as possible. Probably not before Christmas, but quite possibly before New Year's. Stay tuned! Then join us again in January (date TBD) for a very special announcement about the future of the show. It's not going away - far from it! But big changes are coming for 2019. Make sure you tune it! And wherever you are - Fly the N!    Cheers!
