Remember The Game? Retro Gaming Podcast

Every couple months, we dedicate an episode of the show to "revisiting" a game we covered back in the early days of the podcast, when we had even less of an idea of what we were doing than we do now. And this week, we're taking another look at one of my absolute favourite games of all-time, and for my money, the best Mega Man game ever created - Mega Man X.    I think this game is a stone's throw from being perfect. It looks great, plays well, and the soundtrack is one of the best in all of retro gaming. I suppose you could argue it's a littttttle easy (for a Mega Man game), and there's a particular jump that just chaps my ass, but other than that, I have a really hard criticizing X's debut title. It's just a damned good video game.   The one and only Bradley McCue gave me a call this week, and we went through what makes X so rad, and even got into a little strategy talk (which is a rare thing here on RTG, as I normally suck at the games we're talking about). I could talk about this game every week. I hope y'all enjoy it!   And before we talk X, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, we talk about the modern games that'll be considered "classics" someday. What's the optimal number of party members for an RPG? And what do you do to combat gamer burnout?   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Mega Man games: Mega Man X: Command Mission, Mega Man Legends, and Mega Man: Battle Network.   Are you on social media? Of course you are. Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

Game time, Slackers! In this week's episode I share my favorite video games from 1986 - 2001, back when I was a regular gamer. But I was never a particularly good gamer. In fact, I might actually be the worst gamer ever! Now with my recent purchase of the Steam Deck, I have rediscovered some long lost gems, and that got me thinking about all the games that really grabbed my attention throughout the years. My picks are from multiple platforms/consoles, with selections from the NES, Sega Genesis, Xbox, and PC. What are your favorite games? Let me know in the comments. And should I embarrass myself further by streaming my meager gaming skills?Oh, and SUBSCRIBE to the podcast! You can also watch to the video version of the podcast at https://youtu.be/ftCzm4x8vug

Music Block produced in GarageBand in macOS 05/29/2019.     IMPORTANT NOTE: The tools and techniques I used back in 2019 in producing the music block were NOT up to my current standards – including featuring less sophisticated fades, more imprecise volume level balancing, less developed track run-order sorting, and even my having used MP3s rather than WAVs in the source production, resulting in a lower-fidelity final product, and further limiting my ability to touch it up after the fact. As such, the production value of this episode will NOT be to par with our current "fresh episodes". But production values aside, the quality of the CONTENT itself, otherwise, I feel, is excellent, and well worth digging up to share with you.....I hope that you'll agree! :-)    You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on UbiSoft's 2008 series-establishing classic, Far Cry 2. We set it in its time, and talk a bit about shifting engine wars and attendant publisher/developer drama, before briefly getting into the tutorial. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: The Tutorial Issues covered: the UbiSoft open world formula, picking your UbiSoft ur-game, engine wars, branched engine work, getting into or out of the engine game, the open world first person shooter, a brief overview of Clint Hocking's career, games of 2008, grindhouse games, commitment to the first-person aesthetic, picking your character, setting their games in fictional countries, embracing African conflict, expositional value, setting up the chaotic situation, the diagetics of the game, mercenaries coming in, malarial effects, showing the systems, fire propagation, wishing they'd lean into the politics, disclaiming the team diversity to avoid political, having your cake and eating it too, tending to avoid modern realistic settings as players, the sales of the historical era, video game tourism, presenting variables, the diagetic map, the implicit simulated world and how the games get away from that, the onboarding, performance and enemy count and music, gatekeeping around what's a game, games where the interactivity shines through or justifies the choice to make it a game, putting clues together, simple choices that personalize, accretion effects, moments of calm, taking your decisions forward, being forced to the golden path. Episode 81: The NES Hey Listener, we're officially kicking off a new series on the show. Periodically I'll be sitting down with other gamers to discuss one of their favorite video systems and the games they loved to play on it. We're kicking things off with my retro gaming buddy Ben Frietsch and we're going on a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) deep dive. So blow into a cartridge and let's get this show started. Topics this week include: Your host isn't good at starting the show because his ass is bleeding. The Christmas that changed your host's life. The history of the original NES roll out to the US market. Nintendo peripherals of yore. The greatest A Side/B Side video game ever. The original Super Mario Bros trilogy. Spending a Summer swimming and mapping the Legend of Zelda. We respect, but don't love Mega Man. Trying to beat Metroid as an 8 year old is like playing an open world game without a map. Contra: you can't wear a shirt when you're fighting aliens. Thank you stoners for Master Blaster. Sawing a ninja in half. What a terrible night to have a curse. RPGs on the NES. The brutal difficulty of TMNT. The Goonies II just doesn't make any sense. Scrooge McDuck: Capitalist Colonizer. Good luck landing your plane in Top Gun. Ramming JAWS with a boat. Hey, if you had a boat, what would you get? Rygar and Karnov. Do you think Mike Tyson's Punch Out will get retroactively canceled? It wasn't fair to play as Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. What if they made a simulation RC Pro Am? Arcade game version of sports are the best sports games. A side rant about Andre the Giant backing down to Bad News Brown/Allen. Going right and beating people up. Are you bad enough to save the president?Everyone should play River City Randsom.    To help the show grow please give it 5 Stars on Apple Podcast or Spotify. Do you know a friend who would be into the subject matter of this episode? Please share the episode link with them.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on that classic sim, SimCity. We very briefly situate it in time and talk a little bit about Will Wright before talking over some of the strangeness that is this game (or toy). This week on PodQuest we talk about the Flash ending with it's 9th season in early 2023 along with Batgirl being canceled by WB/DC, then we hear Chris' thoughts on the new Amazon series Paper Girls, and dig into our book club topic of Everything Everywhere All at Once. We also talk a bit about concerts and COVID tests, along with digging into some of the reasons Droo prefers watching sports to movies, and Chris has some complaints about Audio Books before talking about the regular book version of Reggie Fils-Aimé's Disrupting the Game.
