Rafe finally gets around to tackling the third chapter of Genesis, the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The serpent is a dastardly character, using his cunning to trip up the child-like and unassuming Eve and Adam.  They get tricked by his chicanery and violate one of God's first assignments: they eat the forbidden fruit. While Adam's and Eve's sins are understandable and relatable (the nature of how they fall into sin is all too familiar to us, even today), the serpent tricking them is far less comprehensible.  What the serpent does to our first parents is not "good for food" or "pleasing to the eye" or "desirable for gaining wisdom"; it is only an act to bring destruction to the pinnacle of God's creation.  Like Joker in the Batman film "The Dark Knight", we find that the serpent in Genesis 3 "just wants to watch the world burn".  #bufnagle #adam #eve #fallofman #genesis3 #forbiddenfruit #treeoflife #treeofknowledgeofgoodandevil #satan #God #eden #sin #nakedness #redemption #expulsionfromthegarden #batman #joker #brucewayne #alfred #darkknight #watchtheworldburn #evilisasevildoes*****As always, you can reach the Buf at bufnagle@bufnagle.com*****As you know, this is an independent podcast so your hosts also carry all the expenses of running this podcast.  As such, some of you have asked how you can help out.  Well, here's the answer: support us on Buy Me a Coffee:https://buymeacoffee.com/bufnagleOn this page, you can do a really nice thing like send us a couple dollars to help cover the cost of recording and hosting and microphones and research and all that.  Any little bit really helps!  Thank you in advance!!!

The PhilenApocalypse is back and this time cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum is here to witness it! This year Philena takes a swipe at super heroes just as their box office fortunes are starting to wane. Her first pick puts the trans in transgressive as trans femme comedian Vera Drew violates all manner of copyrights with THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (2022), a stinging satire of Batman and stand-up comedy wrapped in a surprisingly personal coming-of-age tale. It'll all make sense if you just watch it on Tubi, but not before getting your strain recs from Ngaio and Philena. And then Philena goes a little more mainstream with SKY HIGH (2005), a live-action Disney comedy about a high school for superheroes that is floating in the clouds. Philena thought this was something she dreamed up until rediscovering it recently. It does exist! The movie has one of the most loaded casts ever with Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Bruce Campbell (!), Lynda Carter (!!), Chloris Leachman (!!!), Mary Elizabeth Winstead + Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald from "The Kids in the Hall"!!! Even with Philena controlling the horizontal and the vertical, she has to endure Ngaio and Bob descending into fanboy talk as they go way too deep into Legion of Super Heroes lore for a while, but Philena was fascinated by the tragic tale of Triplicate Girl and Duo Damsel at least. SKY HIGH is streaming on Disney+. Philena, Ngaio and Bob also discuss the zero-budget hit horror movies BACK ROOMS and OBSESSION. Are the Zoomer YouTubers taking over Hollywood, or is everyone is just sick of super heroes and STAR WARS??? The OMFYS trio entertain and inform as they grasp at answers. You can now hear Ngaio on CROSS-POLINATION, a 2-hour showcase of great music and comedy every Tuesday from 10am to Noon on Sacramento's KUTZ 95.7 FM. Nothing says ‘we defeated the racism' like requesting a W-9” from the white supremacist you just hired. What a story. Allegations reported in a lawsuit and summarized in reporting by Just the News show that when they SPLC was approached by a former white nationalist who wanted out of the movement, they hired him. The dude declared that the SPLC had won.Dude went to the KKK and declared, “I'm done. I would like to return this ideology. Please process my refund.”When he told the SPLC, they said, “Can we get you to reconsider?!”Now pause right there, because in normal reality, that is what we call a win. That's the moment you spike the football, ring the bell, and maybe even send the guy a fruit basket that says “Congratulations on your life upgrade.”But instead, the allegation says the system looked at that and said something closer to:“Wait… don't go anywhere.”And this is where it gets almost poetic in its dysfunction.Because the story isn't just “they didn't celebrate the exit.”The allegation is that they allegedly turned the exit into a job opportunity.Which is a very modern kind of American efficiency.Other organizations try to solve problems. This one allegedly offers the problem a consulting contract.Think about the psychological elegance of it.A man says, “I want out of extremism.”And the response is, “Great news. We've upgraded you to ‘ongoing engagement.'”That's not de-radicalization.That's corporate retention strategy with a morality badge on it.Somewhere between HR onboarding and Batman hiring the Joker as a “special advisor on chaos mitigation.”And look, I understand incentives. Everybody understands incentives. But there is something uniquely American about building an entire moral industry and then discovering that moral success might accidentally threaten payroll stability.Because if fewer people are extremists… fewer grants get written. If fewer extremists exist… fewer conferences get hosted. And if fewer extremists exist… somebody in the back row has to ask the most terrifying question in modern nonprofit history:“So… what do we do next quarter?”And that is when ideology meets budget reality. Now, while that story is unfolding, we have another subplot playing out in Maine that feels like it was written by a committee that ran out of coffee and gave up halfway through proofreading. There is a Democratic candidate controversy involving a tattoo reportedly linked to Nazi imagery. And the reaction from parts of the political world has been less “deep concern” and more of a gentle shoulder shrug that says:“Well… have you seen the polling?”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Chris Paul and Burning Bright tackle Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 sequel The Godfather Part II, considered by many to be the greatest film of all time and certainly the greatest sequel. Starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, and John Cazale as the unforgettable Fredo, this is one of the rare second installments that completely flips the tone of the original and absolutely earns it. The conversation circles the dual storylines of young Vito building an empire from immigrant nothing in New York and Michael unraveling the same empire from inside his Tahoe compound. Burning Bright argues that De Niro's Vito chases power because he saw what power does to people, while Michael only knows how to hold onto power he was handed, making him a pale shadow of his father even as he ascends to greater heights. They unpack the Fanucci scene as a perfect lesson in how abstract power collapses the moment someone calls the bluff, the Hyman Roth and Meyer Lansky parallel with Cuba in 1958 as a preview of what may be coming again, the Joker analog for Michael's endgame of just winning, and Kay's spite abortion as a stunning window into how openly anti family the 1970s really were.

It amazes me sometimes that, 242 episodes into this whole thing. how many stories we still haven't read. When Jason Todd tier backer Kyle Still came to me with his options for this week's episode, and one of them included the Batman and Robin tie-in to the Joker-centric event "Death of the Family" I realized that we had never actually done the main arc from Scott Snyder's run on Batman. So, well, that sort of settled things. This week we read a story that features, as Will calls him, "the gayest Joker ever," as Joker, who at this point has no face, does everything he can to show how much he loves Batman in stories from the New 52 volumes of Batman, Batman and Robin and (sort of anyway) Detective Comics. Death of the Family (Batman V.2 # 13-17) Little Big Man (Batman and Robin V.2 # 15-16) Nothin' But Smiles (Detective Comics V.2 # 16-17) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

We venture forth to the nerd cave this week to discuss Smile (2022) and Smile 2 (2024), both directed by Parker Finn, and what begins as a serious conversation about trauma, grief, and psychological horror immediately mutates into a 90-minute brainstorming session about how challenging the Smile Demon to a Mario Kart battle in space somehow makes sense? Look, if Leprechaun and Hellraiser can go to space, then this Demon-thing can, too.As we dive deep into Parker Finn's increasingly cursed universe of hallucinations and nightmare logic, we also break down why Smile worked so well as a psychological horror film, and how Smile 2 somehow managed to crank every dial into the red like a caffeinated psychopath that says, “What if we made everything worse?”Naturally, the convo asks the obvious questions such as:Is the Smile Demon secretly living its best life? Would the franchise improve if future sequels took place in Victorian England? Would Smile 9: Smile Harder feature Joker gas? Could Kyle Gallner have defeated the curse by challenging it to Mario Kart in low Earth orbit? The answer to at least one of these questions is apparently yes.We also celebrate everything that makes the franchise work:The relentless rug-pull hallucinations The terrifying "wait... is that person real? momentsThe increasingly horrifying mythology The monster design that somehow consists mostly of teeth and yet still makes everyone want to leave the room immediately By the end of the episode, we ultimately conclude that if you ever find yourself haunted by an ancient smiling nightmare creature, skip the therapy session, skip the drug dealer, skip the exposition, and immediately launch yourself into space.Checkmate, demon.CREEP-O-RAMA is: Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio: @stranjlove

On episode 157 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by founder and podcast host at InSession Film JD Duran and Editor-In-Chief of InSession Film Dave Giannini discuss the next film in their Christopher Nolan series, The Dark Knight (2008). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. In what might be the single most important film of the 21st century for blockbuster filmmaking, The Dark Knight turned Christopher Nolan into the legend, iconic filmmaker he is today, creating a comic book, action packed crime thriller that elevated the entire genre, creating a film that audiences would obsess over for decades to come; the definitive comic book movie. With an all-time performance from the late Heath Ledger, Nolan upped the stakes of this second Batman film to be more about the fight to save soul of Gotham City, and gain hope in the future beyond the capes and clowns, and created a epic masterpiece. Ryan, Jay, JD, and Dave break down their thoughts on the film, the action set pieces, the battles for Gotham with our flawed heroes, Ledger's iconic Joker, the special effects work on Two-Face, the legacy of this film and why it's (more or less) aged so well. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h53m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Christopher Nolan with a review of his next film, Inception. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Turns out we've got more favorite villains than we have working brain cells between us. And honestly, that tracks. In this round, we talk about:Darth Vader, the galaxy's top heavy breatherThe Joker and his purple‑suited chaosHannibal Lecter and his questionable dinner menuNorman Bates and the world's worst motelKillmonger, Dr. Evil, and other iconic baddiesRound 316 [Redux of round 34 from July 23, 2020!]~~~~~~~Support the show and unlock bonus shenanigans. Darth Vader. The Joker. Hannibal Lecter. Killmonger. Dr. Evil. Freddie Krueger. The Beer Thursday guys cracked open some whiskey and went full villain bracket.Shayne's picks: Darth Vader tops the list — cool suit, James Earl Jones voice, terrifying hallway scene in Rogue One. The Joker comes in close second — sometimes sinister, sometimes funny, always in purple.Jay's picks: Hannibal Lecter — so smart and charming you almost like him... until you remember the whole eating-people thing. Norman Bates — the original "something is very off about this guy" villain. And Dr. Evil — because sometimes evil just needs a Mini Me and a cat.The real debate: Are the best villains the ones who think they're the hero? Jay says yes. Killmonger had reasons. Darth Vader was pushed to it. Even the Joker had a rough go.They also briefly wondered if Elon Musk is secretly a supervillain and watched a Netflix movie about AI wiping out humanity (casual Tuesday stuff).Spoiler: they ran out of time before they ran out of villains. Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ In this highly anticipated movie review and reaction, Tara and Jackie conquer a brilliant slow-burn rewatch that perfectly mirrors the escalating dread of a modern extraterrestrial declassification event. We unpack the phenomenal performances of the legendary stellar cast, featuring Mel Gibson (Braveheart, Lethal Weapon) bringing deep emotional grief as the lapsed minister Graham Hess, Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Joker) as his supportive, minor-league baseball-playing brother Merrill Hess, and Rory Culkin (Succession, Scream 4) as the analytical young son Morgan Hess. We also celebrate the incredible early career debut of Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as the adorable, water-obsessed daughter Bo Hess, alongside critical supporting roles from Cherry Jones (24, The Handmaid's Tale) as Officer Caroline Paski and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) in a pivotal, guilt-ridden cameo as Ray Reddy. Our hosts react to every single iconic jump scare, atmospheric visual clue, and brilliant narrative payoff that hits completely differently in the wake of real-world disclosure trends. We break down the absolute shock of discovering the initial massive crop circle patterns, the creeping suspense of tracking alien reconnaissance frequencies on an old baby monitor walkie-talkie, and the legendary, spine-chilling Brazil birthday party found-footage reveal that left our hosts completely terrified. We dissect the heavy psychological weight of Graham recounting his late wife Colleen's final words, before diving straight into the terrifying climax where the family boards up the house, retreats into a claustrophobic coal shoot basement, and faces a lone alien up close. Tara and Jackie wrap up by analyzing the absolute genius of the final "swing away" baseball bat sequence, where Bo's abandoned glasses of tap water become the ultimate defense weapon, and Morgan's closed asthmatic lungs miraculously protect him from lethal poison gas. Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. The balloons are up. The popcorn machine is running full blast. The sno-cone machine is free today. Here at the Video Store Podcast, we're celebrating 100 episodes! For this special anniversary, we wanted to do something worthy of the occasion. No clip-show flashbacks. No “greatest hits” countdown. Instead, we headed behind the counter and pulled out four of the biggest VHS releases of all time, the movies that didn't just dominate the box office, but helped define the home video revolution. These were the rentals everyone wanted. The tapes that were always checked out on Friday night. The films that transformed the VCR from a luxury item into the centerpiece of family entertainment. For our 100th episode, we're revisiting four legendary films that helped build video store culture as we knew it.Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)Directed by Nicholas Meyer, this sequel took the Star Trek franchise in a sharper, more dramatic direction. Admiral James T. Kirk faces his greatest adversary, Khan Noonien Singh, in a tense and deeply personal battle of strategy, revenge, and sacrifice. With Ricardo Montalbán delivering one of science fiction's most unforgettable villain performances, The Wrath of Khan remains one of the greatest sequels ever made. Its real legacy, however, may be what happened after theaters.Paramount made a bold gamble and priced The Wrath of Khan at just $39.95. The result shocked the industry. The tape became the highest-selling VHS release to date. That decision helped reshape home media forever and opened the door for the home video collecting boom of the 1980s.Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones burst onto screens in 1981 with whip-cracking charisma, globe-trotting action, and one of cinema's most instantly recognizable openings. From the giant rolling boulder to the snake-filled Well of Souls, Raiders delivered nonstop thrills while redefining what modern adventure filmmaking could be.When it arrived on VHS in late 1983, priced at the same consumer-friendly $39.95, Raiders generated massive pre-orders and sold more than a million copies within two years. It became one of the first films to demonstrate that a blockbuster could enjoy a hugely profitable second life in home video. It was the kind of movie families brought home again and again, the perfect repeat-viewing experience that made it a cornerstone of early home libraries. The Karate Kid (1984)The Karate Kid was one of those movies families rented over and over again until every line of dialogue was memorized. Released in 1984, the story of Daniel LaRusso, Mr. Miyagi, and the All-Valley Karate Tournament struck a perfect balance of heart, humor, action, and inspiration. On VHS, The Karate Kid became one of the defining family rentals of the decade.Unlike the spectacle-driven blockbusters on this list, its success proved that emotionally resonant, character-driven stories could thrive in the home video market. It became a staple of Friday night rentals, sleepovers, and repeat family viewings.Batman (1989)The summer of 1989 belonged to Batman.Tim Burton's Batman wasn't just a hit movie, it was a full-scale cultural event. Michael Keaton's brooding Dark Knight, Jack Nicholson's unforgettable Joker, Danny Elfman's thunderous score, and Gotham's gothic atmosphere transformed superhero cinema forever. It was darker, moodier, and more cinematic than anything audiences expected from a comic book adaptation. Then came the VHS release.Warner Bros. priced Batman at an aggressive $24.95, making it one of the most accessible blockbuster home video releases of its era. Stores stacked walls of black-and-gold VHS boxes. Cardboard standees filled lobbies. Television commercials hyped its release like another theatrical event. The theatrical release made Batman a cultural obsession. The VHS release made it part of everyday life.Thank You for 100 EpisodesFrom Star Trek II changing VHS pricing forever, to Raiders proving the power of repeat home viewing… from The Karate Kid becoming a family rental institution to Batman turning home video into a national event, these weren't just great movies. They were the tapes that defined Friday nights. They built home video libraries, filled video store shelves, and helped create the culture we celebrate every week here at the Video Store Podcast. To everyone who has listened, shared the show, and stopped by the store these past 100 episodes: thank you!Until next time — be kind, rewind. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Believe it or not, these are real adult men who not only exist but profit from what we're calling "confrontation porn": a genre built around angering or horrifying people through open displays of bigotry or sadism."Chud the Builder" — the online handle of Dalton Eatherly — was a rising star of the genre until he shot a man. That's where this episode picks up. Eatherly now faces serious legal trouble stemming from his racist stunts, and fellow online bigots have raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for his defense. We also look at another figure in the genre who helped lead that fundraising effort: Paul Miller, aka "GypsyCrusader," known for harassing strangers while performing an array of personas, including one he calls "Racist Mario."It's a tough world out there in 2026, and some of us might to have to “fight for free.”Transition Music: "Split the Difference" by Aqueous

The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July.HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies. Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival. Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel's general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement.Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner.A final look trailer for Prime's Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.
