You need play, you are never too old for play, play is fun - and play at work makes work so much better. Bring on the joy! What is play? It is an in the moment activity with the goal of amusement or fun. Our mammalian brains love play. The bigger the brain in an animal, the more play the animal seems to engage in. This is because play is how we learn and explore the world - and mammalian brains have made this activity feel good so that we are motivated to do it. In one study of play in bears, bears who played more were more likely to survive. But what about play at work? Research has found evidence that play at work is linked with less fatigue, boredom, stress, and burnout in individual workers. Play is also positively associated with job satisfaction, sense of competence, and creativity. Studies show that when a participant receives a task that is presented playfully, they are more involved and spend more time on the task. It also improves our emotional, attitudinal, cognitive being. Teams of workers can benefit from play via increased trust, bonding and social interaction, sense of solidarity, and a decreased sense of hierarchy. Furthermore, findings suggest that play at work can benefit whole organizations by creating a friendlier work atmosphere, higher employee commitment to work, more flexible organization-wide decision making, and increased organizational creativity. WOW! As we mature, we develop a style or mode in which we are most comfortable being playful. Dr. Stuart Brown, author and founder of the National Institute of Play, calls these styles of playfulness, “play personalities.” These are not based on scientific data, rather Dr. Brown discerned them from thousands of interviews and observations: Connector, Joker, Kinesthete, Explorer, Competitor, Director, Collector, Artist/Creator, Storyteller, and Connector. Which play personalities speak to you? Always great to catch up with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. The dude is a beast on the guitar and a creative force! We talked about a project he did with Sons of Apollo bandmate, Derek Sherinian. He talked about playing with Queen's Brian May. "Such a wonderful guy, yeah." He went onto say "There's nothing not to love about that guy!" The reason for the conversation was about his band, The Art of Anarchy, and their upcoming third album. The new album drops next February, called Let There Be Anarchy. The story of how this latest album started is a crazy one. Bumble talked about the severe health challenges that faced guitarist Jon Votta, to the point where he was literally dying. That story is unreal! He told me that they have about two albums worth of music written. He also talks about recruiting Jeff Scott Soto to the band. Of course, he is in S.O.A. with JSS, so it was an easy transition. "We have years of working together." Ron said. He told me about the video for their first single, Vilified, which you can see below. Cube Gooding Jr. is in the video, along with Geoff Tate narrating (which is killer). He said that video has a real "Joker" vibe to it on purpose, including the band playing on the famous stairway from the movie. How did they get those two guys on the video? "We asked!" Easy enough. He went on to talk about what the rest of the album sounds like, including a track with a guitar solo from Alex Skolnick. As far as other things he's working on, he's got a solo album he'll be dropping. Plus, he's working with and producing a band called The Dodies. What's going on with Sons Of Apollo? He answered that. He also talked about his style of producing, and how he approaches the studio. During the pandemic, he mentioned that he would probably not tour anymore. Has he changed his mind on that? Always fun to talk with one of the true good dudes in this business, as well as one of the most talented guys I know. -Meltdown-
Since Bob Kane and Bill Finger created the first Batman comic in 1939, the character of Batman has appeared in a vast variety of films, graphic novels, and television shows, each with a unique author, speaking to different audiences at different historical moments. Standing as a "dark" contrast to DC comics Superman, the initial version of Batman portrayed the role of violent vigilante, at times blurring the line between hero and villain, in search of vengeance. WB Wes Latchford dives into our examination of Batman's morality and values as they relate to Masonic principles and teachings.> Show Links:Start your FREE 7-day trial of the Craftsmen Online Patreon Membership and enjoy an ad-free listening experience with a Subscriber Extra Episode with WB Latchford on "The Batman!"

This Sunday, we're continuing our study in the book of Acts by uncovering the source of humanity's preoccupation with good and evil. A particular story has rattled around Christian Ward's imagination for years. It's been there since childhood, really. Since he first encountered Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth. Last year, he sent out a Tweet, taunting the universe to grant his wish - to tell his cosmic Batman saga. Now, we're weeks away from the cosmos' answer. Batman: City of Madness #1 lands on shelves from DC Comics on October 10th. It's a real humdinger, a comic that feels unlike any other Bat-book that has come before but is absolutely in conversation with the stone-cold classic mentioned above. Christian Ward explores the questions that probably nag every artist who tackles the Bat, but he does so in ways that spark new ideas and new queries. After catching a sneak preview of the first issue, we were eager to get the writer/artist in our Love Nest Zoom room. We discuss his relationship with Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth and how it evolved into Batman: City of Madness. We consider Bruce Wayne's relation to his rogues and what does and does not separate him from so-called villains like Joker and Two-Face. As we do every time the caped crusader comes up on the podcast, we challenge his role as Gotham's vigilante while also addressing how much fun it is to watch him punch punks in the face. However, before we dig into City of Madness and the terrifying Batman Below that lurks underneath our favorite wretched city, we reflect on our Baltimore Comic-Con/Small Press Expo double-header weekend, including the world premiere of Married to Comics. We review these events and consider what makes each con so unique and why we could never give up one for the other. This podcast continues our year-long partnership with Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader. Each episode from now on will feature our new "Referrals" segment, sponsored by them, where we recommend other comics titles for those wishing to explore this week's themes and concepts further. CLICK HERE to learn more and explore Omnibus' unique, browsable space. Also, make sure that you keep abreast on all things Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Twitter and Instagram.
