Send us a textIn today's episode, we talk about the Smithsonian—how it was created and what they are really hiding. Who was James Smithson, and why did this Englishman want to give his fortune to the U.S., a country that England had just lost a war to?And don't worry, this does tie back to our people. We're looking at how the founders of this country decided our fate with a propaganda machine disguised as a scientific institute for higher learning for all men. It's about the "dictionary" they built to tell the world we were disappearing, and the struggle we face today trying to convince people we're still here after 200 years of being told we're gone.So sit back and enjoy this wild ride of Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales.Nightmares of the americas and the behill network are teaming up with the long hairs. It's the 1099 season—and for many business owners, it's the most dangerous time of the year. In this eye-opening episode, Tax Rep Network Founder Eric Green sits down with his own bookkeeper, Maya from Solvency Now, to break down what most business owners don't understand about 1099s—and how those mistakes quietly turn into audits, massive penalties, backup withholding, and even criminal exposure. Eric also shares real-world war stories—from restaurant audits to whistleblower cases—showing how small bookkeeping shortcuts can snowball into business-ending consequences. If you're a business owner, bookkeeper, CPA, EA, or attorney—or if you've ever paid someone “just this once” without paperwork—this episode could save you tens of thousands of dollars and years of stress.Want to connect with Maya? Jann, Caitlin, and Sarah start with a little positivity with some personal updates. Jann is recording from Reykjavik, working on her book, while Caitlin recounts heartwarming moments from her son's playdates, and Sarah shares her excitement about winning a Canadian Choice Award for Women in Media Network.  The trio also touches on Alzheimer's Awareness Month, discussing a unique restaurant in Tokyo that employs servers with dementia, creating a space for empathy and understanding.  Caitlin details the concept of 'choppelganger,' a humorous take on lookalikes, and the amusing experiences of being mistaken for someone else. The trio also  dives into a Reddit thread discussing common misconceptions and habits that are actually universal. Does the sun make you sneeze? Are you someone who doesn't get goosebumps? The also hosts dive into the surprisingly dangerous world of seemingly harmless sports, sharing personal anecdotes; Jann recounts her painful experience with pickleball and even feeding the deer in her yard. Finally, they consider how they'd feel if they were mislead to believe someone who had hair was actually bald, discussing a man who was sued by his wife for being secretly bald. Would you sue? Many aspiring business owners believe buying a franchise is a shortcut to success, but Cliff Nonnenmacher explains why that assumption leads to costly mistakes. In this episode, Cliff joins Russ and Joey to share his journey from Wall Street investment banking to building, scaling, and exiting multiple franchise businesses.Drawing from decades of experience, Cliff explains why most people fail in franchising, not because the model is broken, but because they skip proper valuation, due diligence, and execution. He breaks down why buying at the right price matters more than brand recognition, how a poor "skills fit" destroys profitability, and why execution (not hype) creates real opportunity. The conversation also explores how successful investors think about exits before they ever buy, and the red flags that signal a franchise nightmare. Cliff shares real examples of buying failing franchises for pennies on the dollar and then selling for significant multiples. This episode is a must-listen for anyone considering franchising as a path to cash flow, business ownership, or long-term wealth creation.Top three things you will learn:-Why valuation and execution matter more than franchise brand names-The most common mistakes that turn franchises into financial traps-How to structure a business from day one with a profitable exit in mindAbout Our Guest:Cliff Nonnenmacher began his career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley. After leaving his Wall Street career in 2003, he acquired a Master Franchise for New York and Connecticut, diving headfirst into franchising. Since then, Cliff has owned and operated various franchise and non-franchise businesses. He has also developed well-known domestic and international brands.Cliff has over 25 years of experience in franchising, finance, and business, and has been involved in every aspect of the franchisor-franchisee relationship. He now uses his extensive knowledge to assist corporate executives in building generational wealth, diversifying their investment portfolios, and navigating career transitions through franchise ownership.Disclaimer: The opinions expressed on this podcast are solely those of the hosts and guests and do not constitute financial advice. The Rizzuto Show crew dives into some of the weirdest conspiracy theories people believe — from the Titanic being an insurance scam to Stevie Wonder “not actually being blind,” Avril Lavigne being replaced by a clone, Mattress Firm laundering money through identical strip malls, and Jay-Z possibly being a time-traveling vampire. None of it makes sense. All of it is discussed with confidence in this Rizz Show daily podcast. Then reality gets even stranger. A man discovers his massive beer belly is actually a 77-pound tumor, setting a medical record nobody asked for. Another wakes up from surgery, suddenly fluent in Spanish thanks to a rare neurological condition that sounds fake but is terrifyingly real. The crew debates whether your brain secretly stores everything you've ever experienced — which might explain why this daily podcast exists in the first place. Things escalate when a story about a family Uno game allegedly ends in a stabbing, proving once and for all that Draw Four cards should come with a warning label. Add in celebrity chaos, pop culture commentary, Disney movie trauma, moon hotels that shouldn't exist, and a sneak peek at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spinoff "Lazy Entitled Millennial Monkeys" — and you've got a daily podcast episode that covers more ground than it should and answers none of the questions it raises. Good lord, we hoped. We hoped that the Eagles would be able to get that ship RIGHTED. We thought, maybe, just MAYBE, Patullo would find his playoff legs and give us the Eagles offensive performance of our DREAMS...but as Meek Mill observed, that can soon be NIGHTMARES. Eagles, kaput, at the hands of an undermanned (and much better coached) Niners squad. Brock gets his revenge. Sigh. But Patullo's gone! So who do we like for OC? We assess the philosophical fit for this org, someone who can mesh with Nick but at the same time, be strong enough to be "not Nick" when the moment calls for it. Let's get a genius, either a proven entity or an up-and-comer who's got a definite style and approach. One that - frankly - needs to challenge Jalen Hurts and how he's adjusting to the game plan. Next year folks.THEN - we cut over to the Sixers, playing .500 ball as per usual. But there are moments to get excited about. Are they sellers at the deadline? BUYERS? Do they have what it takes to make that playoff push? Each week, Mike starts to let himself believe a little bit more. We're here for him.Flyers on a stinky stretch of losing....let's see if this week can get that turned around. Developing SOME SORT of power play would be great, guys. Whomever they have on the coaching staff who's accountable for PPs....oh man I hope they don't live near Kevin Patullo and have an egg allergy.Email: hoagiemouthpod@gmail.comIG: @hoagiemouthpod

What do carnival sideshows, government paperwork, and half-billion-year-old nightmare creatures have in common? In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro explore three very different corners of history where certainty was offered in place of understanding—and where things were far stranger than advertised. First, they step into the vanished world of early 20th-century hygiene exhibits: traveling carnival attractions that promised education but delivered fear. Set up alongside Ferris wheels and midway games, these sterile tents used wax models, shock imagery, and moral absolutism to teach the public what would happen if they failed to behave “correctly.” Disease was framed as punishment. Fear wasn't a side effect—it was the lesson. Then, in a Thing in the Middle, the focus shifts from bodies to paperwork. Kat and Jethro examine bizarre bureaucratic oddities: citizens declared dead while still alive, laws that regulate technologies no longer in use, records preserved on media that can no longer be read. It's a reminder that systems meant to create order can quietly lose track of reality. Finally, the episode dives deep into the Cambrian Explosion, a brief moment in geological time when life experimented wildly with form. From five-eyed predators to spined worms reconstructed upside-down for decades, these ancient creatures reveal a world where evolution hadn't settled on any final draft yet—and where “normal” hadn't been invented. Across carnivals, governments, and deep time, a pattern emerges: confidence without nuance, spectacle over explanation, and the human desire to make complicated worlds feel simple. The tents are gone. The paperwork remains. The creatures are fossilized. But the urge to replace understanding with certainty is still very much alive. Learn more about your ad choices. After OpenAI CEO Sam Altman launched ChatGPT in 2022, the race for dominance in the field of artificial intelligence hit warp speed. Silicon Valley has poured billions of dollars into developing AI, building data centers, and promising a future free from the chains of unfulfilling work across the globe. But in “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI,” tech reporter Karen Hao pulls back the curtain, unveiling the human and environmental cost of artificial intelligence and the colonial ambitions undergirding Silicon Valley's efforts to fuel the rise of AI.This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Jessica Washington speaks to Hao about her book and the dawn of the AI empire. “Empires similarly consolidate a lot of economic might by exploiting extraordinary amounts of labor and not actually paying that labor sufficiently or at all,” says Hao. “So that's how they are able to amass wealth — because they're not actually distributing it.”“The speed at which they're constructing the infrastructure for training and deploying their AI models” is what shocks Hao the most, as “this infrastructure is actually not technically necessary, and ... somehow the companies have effectively convinced the public and governments that it is. And therefore there's been a lot of complicity in allowing these companies to continue building these projects.”“They have effectively been able to use this narrative of [artificial general intelligence] to accrue more capital, land, energy, water, data. They've been able to accrue more resources — and critical resources — than pretty much anyone in history,” Hao says, warning of "the complete aggressive and reckless” growth of AI infrastructure, but stresses that none of this is inevitable. “There is a very clear path for how to unlock the benefits of AI without accepting the colossal cost of it.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. If you want to support our work, you can go to theintercept.com/join. On the 12th Nightmare Before Christmas… The Genesee River flows peacefully through Rochester today, but it still holds a dark memory from the late 1980s. Back then, it became the hunting ground of Arthur Shawcross. He had already served time for murder but was let out early, even though experts warned he was still dangerous. Soon after he arrived, a terrifying pattern emerged: people disappeared near the waterfront, only to be found later along the riverbanks, each death showing the work of a disturbed mind.  Join Cam and Jen as they discuss “Dark Waters: Arthur Shawcross.” Well, folks, we've finally made it to the end of our 8th Annual 12 Nightmares Before Christmas and the end of 2025. We're exhausted and definitely need therapy, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for spending another year with us. We've talked about more murders than any “normal” human should, and you're still here, clicking play like champions. We appreciate every one of you who listens week after week. You are what keeps us going. We'll be back on January 14th, 2026, with more true crime cases. Until then, lock your doors, and keep passing those open windows! Have a safe and spectacular New Year. On the 11th Nightmare Before Christmas... On a sunny November morning in 1971, best friends Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson, both just 15, set out for a day of surfing near Galveston, Texas. The two girls were inseparable—bonded by their shared love of the beach, the waves, and the promise of youth. Maria, a newcomer to Galveston, had already endured a turbulent childhood. After her parents split, she bounced between homes and schools before settling into Ball High School. Shy but friendly, she quickly found her place. She loved water skiing, dated a local ski jumper, and spent her weekends at the beach. Debbie, by contrast, was a lifelong islander, what locals called a BOI (“born on the island”). With one brown eye and one blue-green eye, she stood out immediately. She was bold, competitive, and passionate about water sports, often making the local news for her water skiing competitions. Surfing was her favorite pastime, and her friends remembered her as fun, magnetic, and endlessly outgoing. That Sunday, November 14, they planned a short trip to Houston, just over an hour's drive away, to spend the day exploring. Since neither girl had a car, they decided to hitchhike, a common and almost carefree practice in the early 1970s. Witnesses later reported seeing them outside a Baskin-Robbins near Stewart Beach, laughing and chatting as they bought ice cream. A white van pulled up to the curb. The driver asked where they were headed. “Houston,” one of the girls said. It was his route, he told them. They climbed in. They were never seen alive again. On the 10th Nightmare Before Christmas… Palm Sunday is usually a day of hope and reflection, but in 1984,  East New York faced a horror it would never forget. Families were at home, children played, and neighbors went about their day, but inside 1080 Liberty Avenue, everything changed. Ten lives were lost in a single, shocking act of violence. The house was ordinary, the people inside were ordinary, yet by the end of the day, the community would never be the same. On the 9th Nightmare Before Christmas... On the afternoon of March 12, 2004, a quiet Fresno street exploded with panic. Twenty-five-year-old Sofina Solorio stood outside the boarded-up home where she'd once lived, screaming for Marcus Wesson to release her children. Her cousin, Ruby Ortiz, shouted beside her. Both women had grown up under Wesson's rule. Both had borne him children. Now they wanted them back. Relatives crowded the curb, furious and ready to force their way in. Inside, Wesson's family gathered at the windows, shouting back with a strange, fevered devotion. “Judas! Judas!” “Bow down to your master!” When Fresno police arrived, the chaos only deepened. At the center stood Marcus Wesson, fifty-seven, nearly 300 pounds, his graying dreadlocks hanging to his knees. He was eerily calm, answering questions in a soft, measured voice. Officers believed they were dealing with a tense custody dispute. Then Wesson asked for one thing: to say goodbye to the children. He closed the door behind him. They were warnings. In the final chapter of our four-part series on Science Fiction & Reality, we confront the most unsettling idea of all: the creatures that once haunted novels and movie screens were never fantasies — they were prototypes. From mutants and cyborgs to engineered viruses, mind control, cloning, and immortal elites, science fiction didn't invent our fears. It documented them in advance. Tonight, with Professor Mark Brake, we ask the forbidden question no one in power wants answered: What if the real monster was never the creature… but the human who created it? GUEST: Professor Mark Brake is a leading science communicator and author exploring the hidden feedback loop between imagination and innovation. He is the author of FutureWorld: Where Science Fiction Becomes Science and numerous bestselling books examining the real science behind Star Wars, superheroes, time travel, and the multiverse. Known for translating complex ideas into gripping narratives, Brake argues that science fiction doesn't merely entertain — it quietly shapes the laboratories, technologies, and futures we eventually inhabit.
