Paris Marx is joined by Karen Hao to discuss how Sam Altman's goal of scale at all costs has spawned a new empire founded on exploitation of people and the environment, resulting in not only the loss of valuable research into more inventive AI systems, but also exacerbated data privacy issues, intellectual property erosion, and the perpetuation of surveillance capitalism. Karen Hao is an award-winning journalist and the author of Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI. Tech Won't Save Us offers a critical perspective on tech, its worldview, and wider society with the goal of inspiring people to demand better tech and a better world. Support the show on Patreon. The podcast is made in partnership with The Nation. Production is by Kyla Hewson. This episode originally aired in June 2025. Also mentioned in this episode: Karen was the first journalist to profile OpenAI. Karen has reported on the environmental impacts and human costs of AI. The New York Times reported on why we're unlikely to get artificial general intelligence anytime soon.

Gary & Shannon kick off the hour with #SwampWatch, breaking down the seizure of a sanctions-busting oil tanker tied to Russia and Venezuela, new U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine tied to a potential ceasefire, and the latest developments in President Trump’s Venezuela oil strategy. The conversation shifts to Hollywood intrigue as Warner Bros. Discovery rejects a revised Paramount offer, fueling questions about debt, consolidation, and why Netflix still looms large. The show then welcomes Gary & Shannon’s new producer, before pivoting to #Parenting with Justin Worsham, where a shocking hair color delays the segment and forces listeners to Instagram. The hour wraps with a candid, hilarious, and slightly terrifying discussion about what happens when kids overhear things they absolutely weren’t meant to… and then use it against you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After OpenAI CEO Sam Altman launched ChatGPT in 2022, the race for dominance in the field of artificial intelligence hit warp speed. Silicon Valley has poured billions of dollars into developing AI, building data centers, and promising a future free from the chains of unfulfilling work across the globe. But in “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI,” tech reporter Karen Hao pulls back the curtain, unveiling the human and environmental cost of artificial intelligence and the colonial ambitions undergirding Silicon Valley's efforts to fuel the rise of AI.This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Jessica Washington speaks to Hao about her book and the dawn of the AI empire. “Empires similarly consolidate a lot of economic might by exploiting extraordinary amounts of labor and not actually paying that labor sufficiently or at all,” says Hao. “So that's how they are able to amass wealth — because they're not actually distributing it.”“The speed at which they're constructing the infrastructure for training and deploying their AI models” is what shocks Hao the most, as “this infrastructure is actually not technically necessary, and ... somehow the companies have effectively convinced the public and governments that it is. And therefore there's been a lot of complicity in allowing these companies to continue building these projects.”“They have effectively been able to use this narrative of [artificial general intelligence] to accrue more capital, land, energy, water, data. They've been able to accrue more resources — and critical resources — than pretty much anyone in history,” Hao says, warning of "the complete aggressive and reckless” growth of AI infrastructure, but stresses that none of this is inevitable. “There is a very clear path for how to unlock the benefits of AI without accepting the colossal cost of it.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. If you want to support our work, you can go to theintercept.com/join. Welcome to Air Tight Ep. 156, hosted by The Alex of Green Coast Radio — your go-to source for underground music, independent culture, and counter-narrative commentary that hits different. If you're searching for new sounds, real stories, and rebellious energy, this episode is your next essential listen. This week, The Alex takes you deep into the pulse of underground with an eclectic, genre-blurring playlist that defies the algorithm. You'll hear music from artists pushing boundaries and honoring the roots: Frute brings raw underground energy, Nightmares on Wax blends nostalgia with next-gen trip-hop, Rebel Diaz delivers politically charged hip hop that still bumps, and The Peace transports you with vintage Zambian soul. The legendary Tunde Adebimpe also makes an appearance on this journey — and that's just the beginning. Whether you're a crate digger, a playlist junkie, or someone who thrives on discovering what others miss, this episode was made with you in mind. But we're not just spinning tracks — we're talking real-world headlines that matter to anyone tapped into freedom of expression, cannabis culture, and independent thought. In this episode, The Alex breaks down President Trump's move to reschedule cannabis and what that could mean for the future of legalization, underground economies, and personal freedom. He also pays tribute to the late Perry Bamonte of The Cure — a legendary figure in the alternative scene whose influence helped shape an entire generation of sound. We're also hyped to remind you that the latest episode of Unknown Airwaves Pt. 14 is now live on our YouTube channel. It's a must-watch for fans of deep-dive interviews, underground music videos, and culture that cuts through the noise. While you're there, help us reach our goal of 10K subscribers — every sub, like, and share helps keep independent radio visible in a sea of sameness. 2026, The Year of Enterprise AI. Three Big Issues To Consider.

Josh Bersin

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2025 16:36

Welcome to 2026, a year I coin “The Year of Enterprise AI.” As you'll read about (and hear about) in our 2026 Imperatives launch, the coming year is all about AI moving from “assistants” to “agents” to “solutions.” And there are three big considerations to ponder. First, the cost of AI is skyrocketing, so we're going to have to focus on high-value use-cases and business-specific solutions. That's not to say AI assistants and meeting summaries are not valuable, but once you start paying by the token you're going to want to go deeper. As we discuss in our new Systemic HR AI Framework, we're sitting on billions of dollars of real business opportunities now, and they go far beyond individual assistants. (We call these Superagents.) And the cost of AI will accelerate this focus. Second, the data center buildout, energy costs, and political issues with data centers will matter. For corporate users this means understanding the underlying “costs” of AI usage (creating a single high powered image uses as much as 25% of the battery in your phone). I point this out to make you aware that these AI chatbots are not “free” – there are acres of computing campuses being built behind the scenes. And that means your “software providers” are turning into capital intensive companies. (And a new industry of data center companies may take over.) (For those of you in the energy industry, it's a wild time – almost as exciting as I've seen since my early days as an energy engineer during the OPEC Arab Oil Embargo in the late 1970s.) Third is the fast-changing issue of AI's accuracy, trust, and voracious appetite for data. As I discuss, the real opportunity for corporate AI is to take this problem head-on, and focus on your company's data quality, governance, human feedback, and data labeling. The big AI labs are struggling to reduce the “Jaggedness” of AI (it's strange ability to be really good at some things and totally dumb about others), and that encourages us to focus on narrow, domain-specific AI applications. And we all need to learn about RLHF (reinforcement learning with human feedback). Our experience with Galileo proves that an AI solution that focuses on a vertical domain can be infinitely more reliable and intelligent than a general purpose AI. But don't let me argue with Sam Altman, you'll have to figure this out yourself :-). We are launching our 2026 Imperatives research the third week of January, and there will be a special release of Galileo to accompany all the study. Our goal is not to give you a bunch of pithy predictions, but rather to give you a dozen hard-hitting “Must Do's” for the year ahead. I look forward to talking with many of your this coming year as we travel around the world, join us in January for the launch of our 2026 Imperatives research. Soon after he arrived, a terrifying pattern emerged: people disappeared near the waterfront, only to be found later along the riverbanks, each death showing the work of a disturbed mind.  Join Cam and Jen as they discuss “Dark Waters: Arthur Shawcross.” Well, folks, we've finally made it to the end of our 8th Annual 12 Nightmares Before Christmas and the end of 2025. We're exhausted and definitely need therapy, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for spending another year with us. We've talked about more murders than any “normal” human should, and you're still here, clicking play like champions. We appreciate every one of you who listens week after week. You are what keeps us going. We'll be back on January 14th, 2026, with more true crime cases. Until then, lock your doors, and keep passing those open windows! Have a safe and spectacular New Year. Week 17 brings chaos, clarity, and a few things nobody asked for. We start with Michigan firing Sherrone Moore with cause as the coaching carousel somehow finds another gear, then pivot to brutal news around the league as Patrick Mahomes and Micah Parsons both suffer ACL tears that could ripple well into 2026.From there, it's time to take victory laps (and eat a little crow) on our preseason over/unders, hand out Eliminated Team of the Week to a growing pile of misery, and punch playoff tickets for the teams that actually handled business. Derek makes the case that the Saints are quietly wrecking the NFC South, Caleb checks in on Championship Aggies, and we sort contenders from pretenders with just two weeks left.We wrap it up with Bears–49ers as the Game of the Week, Brodie Bets rolling into bowl season, and a full slate of picks as the playoff picture sharpens and patience wears thin. Send us a textChristmas is often framed as a moment of peace, forgiveness, and reflection. But in Korean history, Christmas Eve has repeatedly been chosen for violence, punishment, and erasure. In Part 2 of Christmas Nightmares, we examine three chilling cases tied to the holiday. We begin with the Seokdal-ri Massacre of 1949, when South Korean soldiers burned a mountain village and executed dozens of civilians on Christmas Eve — a crime buried by the state for decades. We then move to the execution of Park Heung-suk, remembered as “Mudeungsan Tarzan,” hanged on Christmas Eve in 1980 after a violent confrontation born from forced eviction and extreme poverty. Finally, we revisit the Daejeon bank robbery and murder of 2001, a Christmas-season killing that remained unsolved for over twenty years. These stories expose how Christmas, rather than symbolizing mercy, was repeatedly used as a moment of finality — when the state acted, and history tried to move on. On the 11th Nightmare Before Christmas... On a sunny November morning in 1971, best friends Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson, both just 15, set out for a day of surfing near Galveston, Texas. The two girls were inseparable—bonded by their shared love of the beach, the waves, and the promise of youth. Maria, a newcomer to Galveston, had already endured a turbulent childhood. After her parents split, she bounced between homes and schools before settling into Ball High School. Shy but friendly, she quickly found her place. She loved water skiing, dated a local ski jumper, and spent her weekends at the beach. Debbie, by contrast, was a lifelong islander, what locals called a BOI (“born on the island”). With one brown eye and one blue-green eye, she stood out immediately. She was bold, competitive, and passionate about water sports, often making the local news for her water skiing competitions. Surfing was her favorite pastime, and her friends remembered her as fun, magnetic, and endlessly outgoing. That Sunday, November 14, they planned a short trip to Houston, just over an hour's drive away, to spend the day exploring. Since neither girl had a car, they decided to hitchhike, a common and almost carefree practice in the early 1970s. Witnesses later reported seeing them outside a Baskin-Robbins near Stewart Beach, laughing and chatting as they bought ice cream. A white van pulled up to the curb. The driver asked where they were headed. “Houston,” one of the girls said. It was his route, he told them. They climbed in. They were never seen alive again. The Leading Edge in Emotionally Focused Therapy

Welcome to the Leading Edge in Emotionally Focused Therapy, hosted by Drs. James Hawkins, Ph.D., LPC, and Ryan Rana, Ph.D., LMFT, LPC—Renowned ICEEFT Therapists, Supervisors, and Trainers. We're thrilled to have you with us. We believe this podcast, a valuable resource, will empower you to push the boundaries in your work, helping individuals and couples connect more deeply with themselves and each other. In this episode of “Push the Leading Edge”, James Hawkins and Ryan Rana dive into one of the most anxiety‑provoking parts of EFT: when the caregiving system red-lights right in the middle of beautiful vulnerability. Drawing on attachment theory and years of EFT training experience, they explore “caregiving nightmares”—those predictable moments when a partner can't respond with comfort, even when their loved one is wide open and reaching. They unpack how pursuers and withdrawers each bring their attachment strategies into the caregiving role: withdrawers often “loan out their avoidance” as a form of love, and pursuers “up the ante” as their way of fighting for the bond. Rather than shaming these moves or bypassing them to “get to the heart,” James and Ryan show how to move toward the blocks themselves as emotional material, validating the attachment logic inside them and using structured, attuned interventions to help partners reclaim their caregiving systems. With rich clinical examples, regulation strategies for therapists, and practical language you can use tomorrow, this episode helps you trust the process, trust the caregiving system, and stay with the red lights long enough for new attachment experiences to emerge. Main Points from the Episode Framing: “Caregiving Nightmares” & Red Lights  - Focus on stage 2 / step 6 caregiving positions, and the “back half” of vulnerable enactments.    - The “red light” is the blocked caregiving system: the partner can't offer simple comfort even when they want to. Predictable Attachment Patterns in Caregiving  - Withdrawers as caregivers:    - “Loan out their avoidance” or self-reliance: advice, positivity, “be comfortable in your own skin.”      - This is a form of love and responsiveness, but often misattuned.    - Pursuers as caregivers:      - “Up the ante”: test, push, or kick the tires on vulnerability (“it's just words,” “you only do this in here”).      - Driven by hope and fear of being dropped again. Therapist Regulation & Preparation  - Pre‑regulate before couples sessions; expect blocks as part of the process, not a failure.  - If the therapist dysregulates, you now have three protection systems in the room. Working with Withdrawer Red Lights  - Steps:    1. Regulate yourself.        2. Offer an attuned, assertive interruption (contain the cycle).        3. Give 3–5 concrete validations of the withdrawer's strategy as attachment‑driven care.        4. Reframe the strategy's attachment function (“this is how you love/protect”).        5. Then gently move toward the part that wants to reach.      - Don't bypass the strategy; work with it as emotional material. Working with Pursuer Red Lights  - Normalize that pursuers often lash out or test the first vulnerabilities they've begged for.    - Validate their vision, hope, and fight for the relationship (3–5 validations).      - Help them notice their somatic/empathic response to the partner's pain (1% of reach or comfort).      - Avoid shaming language like “you're going to your head.” Use of Numbers & Repetition  - “Magic” 3–5 validations to regulate a nervous system.    - Sue Johnson's idea: clients often don't really hear you until about the 5th repetition. Tourniquets & Sender Protection  - After a strong send + strong red light, layer tourniquets on the sender so they:    - Feel caught and not blamed.        - Are reinforced to risk again.      - Never make the sender give up their experience just to soothe the blocked caregiver. Trusting the Caregiving System  - Leanne Campbell's idea: trusting the process = trusting the caregiving system.    - People do know how to care; the cycle paralyzes access.      - Our job is to create conditions for that caregiving instinct to re‑emerge experientially. Hope, Respect, and Attachment Change  - Both pursuer protest and withdrawer avoidance are hopeful, survival strategies.    - Change often comes through “begrudging respect”: seeing a partner fight their old pattern for the relationship. We aim to equip therapists with practical tools and encouragement for addressing relational distress. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas... with Denim-wrapped Nightmares, In Defense of Fandom, and two guys talking about their musical journey! In this first installment of the Supernatural Music Extravaganza's Artist on Artist series (aka "SPNception"), Rob Benedict and Jason Manns unwrap the gift that keeps on giving: their unlikely musical empire built on the back of a TV show about two guys with shotguns. Consider this your Christmas present from the Supernatural music family!Jason reflects on those early convention days when he'd perform for crowds wondering "Who's the big guy?" (spoiler: he wasn't on the show), while Rob reminisces about Louden Swain playing to literally one person at 12:30 AM. They share stories about that pivotal 2011 European tour that almost didn't happen because ticket sales were... let's say "intimate," and how Saturday Night Special evolved from a disjointed variety show featuring Misha's dog tricks to the concert experience it is today. The duo discusses their journey from LA bars where friends were too busy catching up to actually listen, to convention stages where you could hear a pin drop during ballads. They bond over the shared experience of finally being able to call themselves musicians without feeling like imposters, the terror of that first fan convention (spoiler: the fans are VERY forgiving), and their continued shock that 20 years later, 60% of convention audiences are still brand new fans.Plus: How Jason met Jensen at a Christmas party (yes, really—the holiday spirit was strong even back then!), why Rob's mom thinks Jason is Jason Mraz, and dreams of a Supernatural music festival featuring approximately 45 bands with only six actual people.Catchup on Supernatural Music Extravaganza episodes and find playlists at https://linktr.ee/SPN20Follow Denim-wrapped Nightmares (if you're not already) and turn on notifications for new episodes. On the 9th Nightmare Before Christmas... On the afternoon of March 12, 2004, a quiet Fresno street exploded with panic. Twenty-five-year-old Sofina Solorio stood outside the boarded-up home where she'd once lived, screaming for Marcus Wesson to release her children. Her cousin, Ruby Ortiz, shouted beside her. Both women had grown up under Wesson's rule. Both had borne him children. Now they wanted them back. Relatives crowded the curb, furious and ready to force their way in. Inside, Wesson's family gathered at the windows, shouting back with a strange, fevered devotion. “Judas! Judas!” “Bow down to your master!” When Fresno police arrived, the chaos only deepened. At the center stood Marcus Wesson, fifty-seven, nearly 300 pounds, his graying dreadlocks hanging to his knees. He was eerily calm, answering questions in a soft, measured voice. Officers believed they were dealing with a tense custody dispute. Then Wesson asked for one thing: to say goodbye to the children. He closed the door behind him. They were warnings. In the final chapter of our four-part series on Science Fiction & Reality, we confront the most unsettling idea of all: the creatures that once haunted novels and movie screens were never fantasies — they were prototypes. From mutants and cyborgs to engineered viruses, mind control, cloning, and immortal elites, science fiction didn't invent our fears. It documented them in advance. Tonight, with Professor Mark Brake, we ask the forbidden question no one in power wants answered: What if the real monster was never the creature… but the human who created it? He is the author of FutureWorld: Where Science Fiction Becomes Science and numerous bestselling books examining the real science behind Star Wars, superheroes, time travel, and the multiverse. On the 7th Nightmare Before Christmas... Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is the kind of place that sells serenity. Nestled in the lush green folds of the state's northern panhandle, its glittering lakes and cozy resorts draw tourists each summer, while locals call it the Lake City. It's a place where doors stay unlocked, where evenings hum with crickets, and where danger feels far away. Eight miles east of town, near the Wolf Lodge campground, a small, weathered house sat back from the road—nearly hidden by the trees. In 2005, it was home to 37-year-old Mark McKenzie, his girlfriend, 40-year-old Brenda Groene, and Brenda's three children: 13-year-old Slade, 9-year-old Dylan, and 8-year-old Shasta. The family lived their days filled with school, work, and play. Their back door was almost always unlocked. But on the night of May 15, 2005, that small gesture of safety and comfort would be the very thing that destroyed them. That night, a man named Joseph Edward Duncan, 42, slipped through the open back door. He was dressed in dark clothing, wearing black leather gloves, and carrying a shotgun. Along with the gun, he brought duct tape, zip ties, and a claw hammer. The family was asleep. Duncan knew they would be. He had been watching them for days. He'd first noticed Dylan and Shasta playing outside in their swimsuits—laughing, carefree, the way children should be. Something in his twisted mind fixated on that moment. In the quiet town of Coeur d'Alene, a single open door had invited a nightmare that would leave five lives shattered—and shadows that would never lift. Christian Nightmares, our favorite chronicler of evangelical Christianity's tightening grip on American politics in 2025, returns to Tell Me About Your Father for a look back at a truly frightening year in Christian Nationalism that aims to ensure that America is truly one nation under God Trump. In this episode, the anonymous editor of Christian Nightmares, who goes by “Christian”, walks us through his top 5 purveyors of Christian Nationalism this year, which feature such luminaries as pastor Joel Webbon, who matter of factly believes women don't belong in public life and shouldn't vote, much less podcast, and Eric Orwoll, whose white power organization Return to the Land is hard at work building a “fortress for the white race” in Ravenden, Arkansas. We also talk with Christian about how the year has given rise to a glut of militarized Christian branding and survivalist drag, complete with camo, tactical gear, and merch for battles that don't exist. (We know what this country needs: more gun-toting men and boys.)Then there's the growing Christian Nationalist war on “empathy.”As another gruesome grifter, pastor Josh McPherson says: “Empathy is toxic. Empathy will align you with Hell.” We try to parse why Charlie Kirk also couldn't “stand the word.” It's a world view in which care for others is a trap set by childless uggos and fat Army generals. Compassion is always a weakness, and the people who believe it wholeheartedly are right in the center of power in the US. It's not your mama's Golden Rule(book). And, as Christian explained in the interview he did with us back in 2021, he knows this world well. Raised in an evangelical church that instilled constant fear of a punitive god in its members, his work has become a living record of the fundamentalism that shaped his childhood and has since crept its way into the White House under the cloak of Russell Vought's Project 2025, curling up at Stephen Miller's feet.Rob Reiner tried to warn us, but we're not sure the country will listen until Vought takes away their porn.We are wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday break from your jobs, surrounded by the love of your chosen family, favs and friends.Yours,Erin, Elizabeth and MattThis podcast is 100% creator and reader-supported. On the 5th Nightmare Before Christmas... In the summer of 2005, a North Carolina couple slipped away to their Oak Island beach house for a quiet weekend—only to find a stranger renovating their living room. Power tools hummed, drywall dust floated in the air, and the man in work boots calmly insisted the property was his. He even produced a deed, complete with signatures and a tidy paper trail. According to the stranger, he had bought the home from a North Carolina doctor, Dr. William Holbert, for the unbelievable price of $200,000, barely half its value. Holbert, he claimed, was liquidating his sick grandmother's home in a hurry. But the story cracked quickly. Holbert and his partner, Laura Reese, had already vanished, and the cash from the fraudulent sale had funded their next home in Louisa, Kentucky. By the time investigators arrived, the couple was gone without a trace. It was far from over because wherever Holbert went next, terror followed—and the bodies stacked quietly behind him.
