Perhaps most everyone listening to this show is familiar with the term "Fortean," meaning something related to the paranormal, the supernatural, or just generally strange phenomena. But where did that term come from? How did "Forteana" come to describe many of the topics we cover on the podcast? We owe that cognomen and a good deal of our inspiration for our reportage to the work of one man, Charles Hoy Fort. Fort (b. August 6, 1874 - d. May 3, 1932) was a journalist, author, and researcher best known for his collection of accounts of extraordinary incidents and bizarre phenomena. These reports and Fort's commentaries and speculations on them mostly ended up in four books: The Book of the Damned (1919), New Lands (1923), Lo! (1931), and Wild Talents (1932). Within these volumes of nonfiction are found testimonies of rains of meat, frogs, blood, manna, black rain, and unbelievably large stones, poltergeists and spontaneous human combustion, vampires, animal mutilations, UFOs, and alien abductions – anomalies we're familiar with nowadays. Fort is also widely credited for coining the term "teleportation." However, there were likely no other compilations of these incredible tales in Fort's time or before, aside from local newspaper reports. For that reason alone, those of us who are fascinated by such subjects owe him a debt of gratitude. For over 30 years, Fort pored over magazines, books, newspapers, and scientific journals in New York and London libraries and had amassed thousands of notes on odd occurrences. By his own account, Fort would become discouraged by the futility of his endeavors and purpose and claimed to have tossed into the wind around 48,000 notes once while sitting on a park bench at The Cloisters in New York City. Yet his defiance at the dismissal or ridicule from contemporary scientists, or the mystification by religious thinking about these happenings, kept him working until the end. Fort's theories about the causes of such impossibilities would evolve or vacillate throughout his oeuvre, sometimes even within the same book. Whether speculating that the paranormal is the prank of some kind of "Cosmic Joker," to these aberrations being the vestigial byproducts of extraordinary primordial human survival skills, Fort remained compelled by their occurrences regardless. As suggested by the title, The Book of the Damned, Fort postulated that the facts of these cases were "damned" to be excluded by science. Yet no amount of scoffing from anyone would keep the data from these baffling events from proceeding – "they'll march" on, and so did Charles Hoy Fort. We're glad that they, and he, did. In this episode, the heroes of New Arcadia have recovered from their confrontation in the abandoned Ideal base, but they have to deal with new complications in New Arcadia. They have new allies, Quasar and Galileo, but they must find a place for them to fit in. The heroes have a rare chance to socialize with some of their friends with a dinner party! Also, Norm gets a job. Clearly, this is a must listen episode.
The Heroes of New Arcadia have learned of an abandoned Ideal base, codenamed TIN CAN. They plan to access it to get crucial intel and possibly other assets necessary to protect the world from threats like the Collective. Enlisting the aid of Wayfarer, a powerful teleporter, they head to the remote base only to find they aren't the only ones who thought to raid this base. How will our heroes deal with the other intruders? Who is the man in gray? How much is a claymore mine worth? Find out in this episode of the Heroes of New Arcadia!
The second tier of the Heroes of New Arcadia campaign begins! After recovering from their epic battle with the Syndicate, the heroes have new threats on the horizon. But the heroes have been changed by their experiences, some mentally or emotionally while a few have undergone even greater transformations. The Collective is imprisoning all supernatural creatures, including ancient gods. After the heroes discover this, they investigate which leads to a search in the desert and a confrontation with an unnatural guardian. All this and more in episode 11 of the Heroes of New Arcadia!
While the Heroes of New Arcadia have defeated the Syndicate, there are still other threats and challenges to overcome. Chirop must work through the legal consequences of his crimes without compromising himself. Even after dealing with that, the heroes learn of a secret prison built with technology from the Ideal. What's going on? Who is behind this secret base and what does it mean for the rest of the world? Plus, Ross gets to play as new hero Wayfarer.
The final battle between the Syndicate and the Heroes of New Arcadia begins! Deep in the Ideal Particle Collider known as Big Wheel, the heroes and their allies must fight a group of trained and dangerous superhumans, led by a powerful telepathic super-scientist known as Paragon. The heroes have cornered their foes and no quarter will be given to either side. This epic battle had 17 combatants (6 PCs, 5 NPC allies and 6 NPC villains) and lasted two entire sessions. Enjoy this double length episode and finale of the street level tier of the campaign!
The Heroes of New Arcadia have made contact with the mysterious and powerful leader of the Syndicate, a telepathic scientist named Paragon. She wishes to deal with the heroes but will they accept a compromise or not? Furthermore, the hero Chirop must pay for his crimes but what will the federal government demand of him? As the seconds count down, can our heroes come up with a suitable plan to stop the threat of the Syndicate once and for all?
In this episode, the heroes must stop the Syndicate's latest plot to destabilize the state! Fortunately, they have a new ally as guest player RJ joins the band in one session. In the second half, the Syndicate takes action against the heroes. Find out how in this episode!
