WAIT, WHAT HAPPENED TO 028?It's officially been one year since Retro Grade Podcast has been online! Throughout our first year in podcasting we've had a lot of memories and moments behind the scenes that have have made the experience so enjoyable and fulfilling. We've also had moments where it was clear to us now, we had no idea what we were doing. However, part of the journey is making mistakes and learning from them to make the future of the podcast the best we can make it. And of course, we'd couldn't do it without the support of our friends, family and loyal listeners! On this episode, we take a look back at some of our favorite and least favorite moments of the process of podcasting. We also get into what the future holds for the podcast, talking about future episodes for the rest of the calendar year, launching a Patreon next year, and some ideas we have to make the listening experience more enjoyable. In preparation for this special, we've both gone back over our previous episodes and Jorge has decided he's not done disagreeing with Austin over the film Independence Day (even though the conversation happened over a year ago.) Closing out the episode, we take some questions from our listeners! A preview of some of the questions: ”Who are your top 3 film directors in the game and why?” “How has this podcast changed the way you see movies?“ “You guys talk about movies you love, but what are some movies you HATE?“Tune in to find out the answers to those questions on our first annual Retro Grade: Retrospective (an episode title coined by Jorge Montoya)Don't forget to check out our merch! Brazil was among one of the countries most affected by the Zika virus in 2015 and 2016 but Dr. Carlos Pardo, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, said the virus emerged in the 1950s. Zika virus is an arbovirus — a type of virus that is transmitted by certain kinds of insects like mosquitos. The ades Aegypti mosquito, which is primarily found in tropical climates, is a known carrier of the virus. It can also be sexually transmitted. In 2015, Germana Soares, who lives in Brazil, was infected with Zika virus. Soares was 12 weeks pregnant when she became ill, but at the time, doctors believed there was no harm to the baby. In November, just before she gave birth, Soares said local news stations began reporting a link between Zika and microcephaly with women who were pregnant. Days after his birth, doctors confirmed the diagnosis; Guilherme had microcephaly. Pardo said only 20 per cent of infected people show symptoms, but the risk rests with pregnant mothers as Zika is known to also cause Congenital Zika Syndrome and microcephaly in fetuses. Microcephaly occurs in these children when their mothers are infected with Zika while pregnant, he said. The fetus develops viral illness and eventually encephalitis. The World Health Organization estimated at the height of the epidemic, there were over 216,207 probable cases of acute Zika virus disease reported in Brazil, and thousands of babies were born with complications. Anis Institute for Bioethics, a not-for-profit organization in Brazil, has been one of the leading organizations advocating for women and families affected by the Zika epidemic. Luciana Brito, researcher and psychologist for Anis Institute for Bioethics, said since the beginning of the epidemic, over 19,000 babies have been born with suspected Congenital Zika Syndrome. On this episode of What Happened To…?, Erica Vella revisits the 2015 Zika epidemic and finds out if the virus is still a threat. She also speaks with the families impacted virus who share what life has been like. On August 8, 1986, a couple drove from Philadelphia to Buena Vista, New Jersey to check on a home they were building. They pulled into the driveway, walked around the property, and found something horrible: the mangled body of a woman, wrists shackled, in the blood soaked yard. This story started in the last episode, "What Happened to Publicker Jane Doe?" When Bensalem Police Detective Chris McMullin was trying to find the identity of the murder victim known only as Publicker Jane Doe, one of the leads he followed was the disappearance of a young woman named Jeanette Tambe. After a lot of boots on the ground police work and DNA analysis, he found something he wasn't expecting, and ended up helping to unravel another mystery that had gone unsolved for decades. If you know anything about the murder of Jeanette Tambe, please send an email to ColdCase@NJSP.org. Thank you to Detective Sergeant Joseph Itri and Detective Taylor Bonner with the New Jersey State Police Cold Case Unit, and Bensalem Police Detective Chris McMullin.
