Some artifacts don't belong. Buried in sand. Hidden in shipwrecks. Locked in museum cases. Objects that shouldn't exist — at least not according to the official timeline. In this episode, we dive into the world of Out-of-Place Artifacts — the Baghdad Battery, the Antikythera Mechanism, the Iron Pillar of Delhi, the Sabu Disc, the Nimrud Lens, the Wedge of Aiud — relics that feel like glitches in history itself. Ancient batteries. Mechanical computers 2,000 years ahead of their time. Rust-proof iron. Precision stonework that modern tools struggle to replicate. Are these just misunderstood relics… Or evidence that something has been forgotten — or erased? Was there lost technology? A vanished civilization? Cycles of collapse we refuse to acknowledge? The deeper you look, the stranger it gets. History tells a story. But sometimes the artifacts tell a different one. Listen. Learn. Laugh. Question everything. There's something sacred about pressing play on UnderDeep mixed live from Downtown Msheireb, Doha. It's a decision. A shift. An agreement with yourself to slow down and tune in. This isn't music for the algorithm. It's music for alignment. Episode 112 moves like a conversation you didn't know you needed. It doesn't demand attention; it earns it. It doesn't rush; it unfolds. Each moment layered with intention, space, and the quiet confidence of knowing that depth will always outlast noise. UnderDeep isn't about being loud in the room. It's about owning your presence within it. For the ones who feel before they speak. For the ones who move without performance. For the ones who understand that groove is a language. Press play. https://enlighteninglife.com/greed-grift-graft-spiritual-industry/We are watching, in real time, the collapse of the guru era — the for-profit spiritual industry built on glamour, paid access, and manufactured enlightenment. This is not only about Deepak Chopra's infamous relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, although that plays a part. For nearly two decades I've witnessed people pour their faith, money, and power into authors and teachers who positioned themselves as the sole keepers of truth. I knew it could not and would not last, something I have been saying for many years. I have been part of the spiritual world longer than most of the people who are now writing public apologies. While others built high-ticket empires and declared themselves enlightened, I did my work quietly, consistently, and with integrity. I turned down publishers, refused to share stages with those I thought were fraudsters, and never sold access to myself as a product. So this moment of reckoning does not surprise me. The truth always rises. And the collapse of the guru economy was inevitable. Now the curtain has finally been pulled back and people are left wondering whom to trust. My work as a spiritual mentor, teacher, and guide began by accident, first in 1991 when I started a spiritual group in Houston, Texas that quickly grew to include hundreds of members. Then in 2004, when I answered a calling that required me to give up a career I loved in business and technology. I never saw myself as a ‘leader,' I did not want to be a ‘guru,' I just wanted to help people find their own path and learn how to be in control of their own energy. Since 2004 I have written 8 books, all self-published, all best sellers. No ‘famous' author has ever written a promotional blurb for me, I was not part of their crowd. I have written over 5000 articles, started the first internet-based live weekly broadcast in March 2004 that I still host today. I started teaching online courses in March 2004, an early pioneer in online training. Read the rest of the article on the blog at I have millions of followers and students – but I do not have millions of social media followers. You have probably never heard of me, and I am OK with that. Coming to you straight from the mean streets of DTLA, this episode of the show is putting the 1990 horror-procedural THE FIRST POWER on the stand!! Under cross-examination are the many “undead killer” films of the late 80s and early 90s, what possesses Lou Diamond Phillips to keep wearing a trenchcoat in LA weather, exploring the open and flammable acid pits under Silver Lake, and accounting for how much a local psychic can pull to be able to afford an architectural wonder!! All this, plus a drive-by hoofing, impossible ceiling fans, wang-dang-doodle-splaining, jammy egg acting, obvious dummies, gnarly stunts, and a teleportation-heavy edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! It's a manic Satanic panic this week on Kill By Kill!! Check it out!! NOTE: We apologize once again for missing last week. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard and released in 1960, the classic French New Wave drama stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. Sam and Richard discuss shooting his new film Nouvelle Vague on the same locations as Breathless, why the runtime of Breathless was revolutionary, and how Richard rarely makes films over two hours long. We're back this episode for our second timely interview focusing on political polarization, wrapping up in conversation with Dr. Kurt Gray, professor of moral psychology and neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill, and the director of the Deepest Beliefs Lab in the Center for the Science of Moral Understanding. Moral psychology is the descriptive understanding of our moral judgments, or concern with not just how people should make moral decisions, but how they actually do. Why does this matter? In Dr. Gray's words: "To understand our contentious and divided political moments where people are unwilling to discuss politics across the aisle or entertain even that the other side is a reasonable human being in the way that you feel about yourself and your own side. We do disagree already when it comes to politics. But where does this political disagreement come from? …Once you get that, then you can understand where this political animosity comes from. But it's really a question of moral disagreement. And for that you need to understand our moral psychology." Michael Penn II, aka CRASHprez, makes two rapper episodes in a row! Not since Mike Watt has there been a This Is Your Afterlife guest slinging this much of their own lingo (what is it about Mikes?), and I do my best not to pretend too hard like I understand it all. Fortunately, we take a detour into the topic of slang ("getting kirk" is simply unbelievable) on the way to Michael revealing one of his origin stories as an artist. It's a small, powerful moment, the kind I love featuring on TIYA, and I'm glad he didn't save it for his eventual Rolling Stone interview. We talk about: gay shit, COVID shit, ally fatigue, underground rapper trade, social death theory, Lil Wayne's "The Carter" documentary, the relationship between actions and words.Support the show and get the TIYA After Dark feed on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/thisisyourafterlifeFollow CRASHprez:https://www.instagram.com/crashprez/https://crashprez.bandcamp.com/https://twitter.com/CRASHprezFollow/contact This Is Your Afterlife:https://thisisyourafterlife.com/https://www.instagram.com/thisisyourafterlife/thisisyourafterlifepodcast@gmail.comMusic by TIYA house band Lake Mary:https://lakemary.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/chaz.prymek/Artwork by Matt Sage:https://www.instagram.com/matthewjsage/
Why I Listened to 2,000 Minutes of Tchaikovsky Last YearWe are living in the age of "frictionless" music. The algorithms know what we want before we do, the dopamine is cheap, and the content is served to us on a silver platter. But as Charles Bukowski once said of classical music: "It washes the crap right out of me."Lately, it feels like there's a lot of crap to wash out.In this episode, I'm stepping away from the "business" of music to talk about the Aura and the Sublime. I'm breaking down why I spent more time with a 19th-century Russian composer than anyone in the Top 40, and why I believe the "smoothness" of modern digital life is actually making us bored, exhausted, and artistically numb.In this episode, we explore:The "Loss of Aura": Why music feels less valuable when it stops being a "hunt" and starts hunting you.The Sublime vs. The User-Friendly: Lessons from Walter Benjamin and Theodore Adorno on why great art should be a little bit terrifying. The Tchaikovsky Antidote: How complex, uncomfortable, and "loud" art reminds us that we aren't the center of the universe.Breaking the Algorithm: Why the most successful artists of the future will be the ones who refuse to be "mathematically certain."If you've been feeling a specific kind of creative exhaustion lately, this one is for you. It's time to stop trying to conquer the mountain and let the mountain conquer us.RESOURCES & LINKS

The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
Every time one of the big clubs show up on this humble podcast, the audience is a little larger - and maybe I should do more on the likes of Bayern or Liverpool. But I always shirk back a bit. Too mainstream, I think. And if you like Liverpool, wouldn't you have found another, more professional media outlet already? If that is you, I think you need to buy this book. And, first, hear about it: Alan McDougall has written what the subtitle says is a peoples' history of Liverpool F.C. I would say it's a global people's history. Published by Cambridge University Press, the book is very readable and accessible, but with high scholarly standards. Not a straight up club history, always with an eye on culture, society and football more broadly, but never far from the club the author has grown up to love. It's a story of deindustrialization, migration, the tragedies of Heysel and Hillsborough, and Bill Shankly and Jürgen Klopp. Alan McDougall is a professor of history at the University of Guelph in Canada, and he has been on before to talk about his fabulous older book The People's Game about soccer in Eastern Germany. For this one, he has returned to his football home, and done what not many club histories do: a book you'll enjoy reading, following its connections and learning about its world even if you don't support Liverpool.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Alan McDougall, professional pageDreams and Songs to Sing, book websiteHillsborough Law campaignHeysel Stadium catastrophe, TV footage (warning, graphic imagery)NEW: send me a text message!
