Crude Conversations
Chatter Marks EP 027 How mapping affects our perspective and understanding of land and our place in the world

Crude Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2021 78:24

Joining this conversation are artists Stuart Hyatt, Dan Mills and Christina Seely. Stuart uses sound to understand our relationship with the natural world. Dan uses maps in paintings and collages as a way to explore ideas of historic and current events, including issues like colonialism. Christina uses photography to address the complexities of both built and natural global systems. All of their work—Stuart, Dan and Christina—is featured in the Anchorage Museum's exhibition “Counter Cartographies: Living the Land,” which challenges our traditional understanding of what a map is. Often, maps are viewed as objective and above reproach, but maps—just like any piece of art—come with the bias of their makers. They can be made with the intent of acquiring land and resources, as has historically been the case. So, it's important to consider how they affect our perspective and understanding of land and our place in the world. It's also important to consider ways we can re-imagine the traditional idea of mapping because an image can't always document or express the reality of a place. Chatter Marks is a podcast of the Anchorage Museum, and is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and Google Podcasts. Just search "Chatter Marks." Artwork by Dan Mills

(Original, unadapted version of the poem)A Father to His Son, by Carl SandburgA father sees his son nearing manhood. What shall he tell that son?"Life is hard; be steel; be a rock."And this might stand him for the stormsand serve him for humdrum monotonyand guide him among sudden betrayalsand tighten him for slack moments."Life is a soft loam; be gentle; go easy."And this too might serve him.Brutes have been gentled where lashes failed. The growth of a frail flower in a path uphas sometimes shattered and split a rock.A tough will counts. So does desire. So does a rich soft wanting.Without rich wanting nothing arrives.Tell him too much money has killed menand left them dead years before burial:the quest of lucre beyond a few easy needshas twisted good enough mensometimes into dry thwarted worms.Tell him time as a stuff can be wasted.Tell him to be a fool every so oftenand to have no shame over having been a foolyet learning something out of every follyhoping to repeat none of the cheap folliesthus arriving at intimate understandingof a world numbering many fools.Tell him to be alone often and get at himselfand above all tell himself no lies about himselfwhatever the white lies and protective frontshe may use against other people.Tell him solitude is creative if he is strongand the final decisions are made in silent rooms.Tell him to be different from other peopleif it comes natural and easy being different.Let him have lazy days seeking his deeper motives.Let him seek deep for where he is born natural. Then he may understand Shakespeareand the Wright brothers, Pasteur, Pavlov,Michael Faraday and free imaginationsBringing changes into a world resenting change. He will be lonely enoughto have time for the workhe knows as his own.

“I AM A ROCKER, I AM A ROLLER, I'M AN OUT-OF-CONTROLLER!”On this episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we talk about the most prestigious high-octane, post-apocalyptic film franchise in cinema history. We are talking about where is all began in Mad Max, from 1979, directed by George Miller, produced by the late Byron Kennedy, and starring the infamous Mel Gibson. With a very humble budget of about 350,000 dollars, this film would go on to make 100 million dollars, putting Australian cinema on a global scale. In fact, Mad Max became the most profitable film ever made until the mid nineties when it would be dethroned by The Blair Witch Project. We talk about how much this film means to Austin, who has been a fan of the series ever since he caught a glimpse of Mad Max on TV as a kid with his dad, and how Jorge has never seen any of the old Mad Max's despite being a huge fan of Fury Road. We talk about the undeniable impression the films have had on pop culture with their unique quotes and terminology, and becoming the measuring stick for all post-apocalyptic films and video games to come out after Mad Max 2. We talk about how the film was a labor of love from people who really wanted to make a movie. Inspired by the 1973 Oil Crisis, George Miller's experience while working as a medical doctor in emergency rooms, and the desire to make a “kinetic picture” that could be understood on an international level without subtitles, you could tell that the film was made by someone destined to be a film director. Shot on used camera lenses, stunt men directing crazy stunts from wheelchairs, and edited on a homemade rig in a borrowed apartment, the film is definitely rough around the edges but is it enough to keep it from being appreciated today? (Spoiler alert: Hell no.)One of the highlights of doing this podcast is talking to people who are equally, if not more, passionate about the films in discussion. On this episode, we are fortunate enough to be joined on this episode by amazing Twitch streamer and Mad Max expert, Nebula!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

In this wide-reaching conversation Abdulmumit tells the story of the direct role he played in the Black freedom struggles of the 1960s/1970s and the heavy price he paid for his involvement in the Black Liberation Movement. Abdulmumit served 23 years of his life in prison as a domestic political prisoner and in this discussion he sheds light on the plight of political prisoners and how Islam shapes his commitment to the Black Liberation struggle. Abdulmumit also speaks to the role the arts play in the quest for freedom and self-determination and shares his thoughts on how the struggle for freedom and self-determination has changed since the 1970s.  To the question, “What is your Black Muslim theme song?,” Abdulmumit chose Nina Simone's “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” – with lyrics added by his artist children to include the Muslim experience. A.M.W.: Dead To Sin Sinners (aka Christians)

AMW: Always More Wednesday. In this episode, we talk about how we as Christians can call ourselves "sinners" and yet we need to check ourselves because sin is not a normal part of the Christian life. We are called to be dead to sin sinners. We rightly call ourselves sinners, but let's not make excuses for ourselves in that statement. In this episode, we also talk about the power and invasion of sin and death - the wages of sin is death that reigns in humanity; and yet, this power has been overcome by Jesus and He calls us to participate in His holiness to have His power to defeat and overcome sin and death that has defeated and overcome the human race. From a young age, Kobina Ansah '08 was a budding entrepreneur, even before he knew what entrepreneurship really was. As a teenager he mowed neighbors lawns to earn extra spending cash. In college, he and his friends started a full service B&B for busy Cornell weekends (Air BnB eat your heart out!); "I remember feeling this great sense of satisfaction by identifying a client, identifying their needs, serving that need, and getting compensated for that." Furthermore, entrepreneurship is in Kobina's blood. His grandmother started one of the first daycare programs in Ghana, West Africa (visited by the Queen of England!), and his mother created Alta Spa in Ithaca, a place he and his brother worked and really helped conceptualize from the ground up. Today, Kobina's company COVERR (https://www.getcoverr.com/) provides financial loans to workers in the gig economy, people who have difficulty getting financial support from traditional lending institutions. As Armon Sadler so perfectly put it, Kobina is "a human who is serving humans-- who are serving humans." Read the episode transcript: https://cornell.box.com/s/iyl7d2igjqssdmej2q658nypbo2g5zx9.
