It's a Poetry Snack, featuring Claude McKay, born Festus Claudius McKay in Sunny Ville, Jamaica in 1889. McKay wrote both poetry and prose, and he was another key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, the prominent literary movement of the 1920s and 30s that I often mention here on the podcast. Last week, we wrapped up a deep dive into the "Scary Movie" franchise. This week, we're going deeper into two of the writers of the original "Scary Movie": Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the worst writer/directors of the 21st century. It's a tale that involves countless parodies, none of them good, most of them barely parodies. "Date Movie". "Epic Movie". "Meet the Spartans". "Disaster Movie". "Vampires Suck". "The Starving Games". "Best Night Ever". "Superfast". Oof. Ouch.Pray for your wonky yet affable host. This Week's Recommendation(s): “The Nice Guys" (2016)For every single episode at least a week early and great WEEKLY bonus episodes, become a Patreon subscriber. While Alex is out on the road with Testament on the Bay Strikes Back Tour, we thought we'd take you on a journey back to the early days of Moods & Modes. This week, we're featuring Episode 3: Peter Green, Remembered and Rediscovered. A deep dive into the life and music of Peter Allen Greenbaum, better known as Peter Green, who passed away on July 25, 2020. Although best known for co-founding the first version of Fleetwood Mac, there is so much more to uncover. This episode features a roundtable of experts on the gentle genius of guitar known as “Greenie,” plus a few surprises. Alex is joined by Mike Zito, Dave Rubin, Andy Aledort; and, via shared podcast: Dean Delray & Kirk Hammett.Peter Green was a British blues rock guitarist and composer. As the founder of Fleetwood Mac, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Green founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967 after a stint in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and quickly established the new band as a popular live act in addition to a successful recording act, before departing in 1970. Green's songs, such as “Albatross”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Oh Well”, “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)” and “Man of the World”, appeared on singles charts, and have been adapted by a variety of musicians. Green was a major figure in the “second great epoch” of the British blues movement. Eric Clapton praised his guitar playing, and B.B. King commented, “He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats.” His trademark sound included string bending, vibrato, and economy of style. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 58 in its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. Stay tuned next week's Best Of episode Peter Green, Part 2.Moods & Modes is presented by Osiris Media. Hosted and Produced by Alex Skolnick. Osiris Production by Kirsten Cluthe and Matt Dwyer. This week we talk about a short film called The Garden of Words, even though there were not very many words spoken in that garden the movie was still a pleasure to look at even if the story was lacking. But in terms of scoring Jack and Rick are split on this a little more than usually. Jack was not impressed with the story and did not have a need to drive to want to watch it again. Rick on the other hand enjoyed it more and would not mind seeing it again. What they do agree on is that you will enjoy the art for it. Producers: The Answer Studio, TOHO animation Studio: CoMix Wave Films Aired: May 2013 Genres: Drama, Romance, Slice of Life Source: Original Run Time: 46 min. Jack's score: 5 / 10 Rick's score: 7 / 10 Next week's choice is Corpse Princess. Have you seen next week's choice or one of the previous ones? Alright, listen up, you primative screw-heads! We've heard you! You want us to cover something fun. You want us to talk about something you've heard of. And you want us to review a movie you can actually find. Jesus, you're demanding. Well, fret not, nerds for we're nothing if not men of the people. This week we're going all the way back to 1992, before a lot of you were even born realistically. That's right! This week we're fighting deadites in the medieval age with Army of Darkness! Knowing this movie came out 30 years ago makes me feel old as fuck. However, with the release of Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead: The Game on the horizon, we figured it was high time we discuss a film with alloys, and compositions, and things with molecular structures. And that's NOT just what we call "pillow talk", baby. Artwork was once again done by the incredible Cal Gee. Go follow him on instagram. A correction is issued by one host for fear of being tracked down by a venomous social club. Meanwhile the other host maintains his composure by doing what most white male film fans do when confronted with an international film he doesn't understand by citing a Tarantino movie that ripped it off. (This may also just be yet another excuse for him to think of Uma Thurman.) Just like prodigy sang: I'm a firestarter, twisted firestarter; You're a firestarter, twisted firestarter. This Blumhouse remake of the 80s classic is more twisted, but is it worth a watch? Listen to our review to find out. Artwork by Dustin Goebel @dgoebel00 on instagram Synopsis Firestarter is the second adaptation to Stephen King's 8th novel. It tells the story of a young girl Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) trying to control her supernatural power to set things on fire with her mind. After an accident in school, she finds herself on the run from the law and a mysterious government agency with her psychic father (Zac Efron). The government agency sends a telepathic native american assassin named Rainbird to track down Charlie and return her for testing. In the end, everyone gets more fire than they bargained for. https://youtu.be/59MJfJPP5eo Review of Firestarter (2022) This was an ok movie. I don't know if anyone was clamoring for a remake of the 1984 Drew Barrymore film, but here it is. It is very quickly paced, and it gets off to a quick start, but it suffers from a lack of character development early on. The supernatural elements are handled very matter of factly and almost seems too common in the world for it to be surprising to anyone. Where the film really shines (no pun intended) is when things get set on fire by Charlie. It's unavoidable that you are going to have a good time watching her on a rampage at the end of the film. Firestarter (2022) Poster I wasn't blown away by it (no pun intended), and it does seem like an unnecessary remake/adaptation, but Blumhouse has found a market for remakes that no one is asking for, and it's going to serve it god damn it. I was pretty bored with the first two acts. The problem with presenting the problem and immediately starting the action in the beginning is that the film ends up basically being the same thing for most of the movie. Some more character development around Charlie, her father, Rainbird, and even the government agency would have made it more engaging and established better stakes. It has some fun moments and is worth a watch with friends, but I wouldn't rush to the theater for it. Score 5/10

Feed drop time! We're on a break from the show as we prepare for v5 of SquadCast and work on revamping the SquadCast podcast. So, we're bringing you carefully curated feed drops from some of our favorite SquadCasters. This week, we're spotlighting the work of Pam Uzzell, who's been a SquadPodder for a while now. SquadPod is what we call the SquadCast community on Slack. (Join us here). Pam Uzzell is a documentary filmmaker and podcaster currently living in Oakland, CA. At twenty-two, she began working in post-production, with credits in over twenty feature films, including Terminator 2, Godfather III, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. She is the director and producer of three independent documentaries, Some Call It Heaven (2007), Unearthing the Dream (2012), and Welcome to the Neighborhood (2018). More about Pam here. Here's what the episode is about, from Pam's website:Today, I'm joined by independent director and producer Alexi Lacey. She has over 20 years of experience in filmmaking, and her most recent project, Fiji Memory Colonial Time, has been on her mind since she was a teenager. The film explores the complexity of identity when it's been formed by privilege due to the exploitation of other people and the intended destruction of their culture. For Alexi, this was an opportunity to profile her mother's courage, share the bitter truths in their family's history, and the legacy of colonialism in Fiji. We discuss what motivated Alexi to pursue this story, how colonialism impacts our identities, and what she hopes viewers take away from this film. We also touch on the work that she does with issues around the housing crisis, displacement, and gentrification happening in San Francisco. Here's the description of the podcast, from Pam's website: Ready to unlock your inner artist? In this podcast, we explore the intersection between art and well-being. Listen as artists share how they creatively engage with the issues we all struggle with. Through their stories, we meet ourselves with compassion and find common ground. Why we chose this episode:Pam is an amazing producer and interviewer. The stories she chooses to highlight on her podcast are intriguing and heartfelt. We love how she effortlessly weaves in music to enhance her stories. Also in this episode:A pre-roll ad from Leah Carey's Good Girls Talk About SexPam UzzellJoin our communitySend us your podcast pre-rollsGet in touch with us on social mediaCreditsWritten and produced by Arielle NissenblattMixed and designed by Vince Moreno Jr.Artwork and logos by Alex WhedbeeHosted by Zach Moreno and Rock Felder

We decided to dedicate an episode of The Koren Podcast to friendship. We all know that the mourning observed during Sefirat HaOmer is due to the lack of respect shown by the students of Rabbi Akiva to each other. Just in time for Lag BaOmer, we had the chance to speak with two people who live and breathe friendship as a Torah value. Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz, director of Semicha at RIETS and Rabbi of Beis HaKnesses of North Woodmere, and Rabbi Shalom Rosner, Ram at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh and Rabbi of Kehillat Nofei HaShemesh, have been friends and hevrutot for more than 20 years. Rabbis Rosner and Lebowitz, on top of their professional and pastoral duties, both deliver daf yomi shiurim online to thousands upon thousands of people every day, to say nothing of their respective halakha, parasha, tanakh, hashkafa, and many other shiurim besides. We spoke about their friendship and its importance on their journeys to becoming leaders of Modern Orthodoxy today, their inspirations, the value of friendship in general, and what it takes to build successful, modern orthodox communities in America and in Israel. It was such an honor to spend time in the presence of these two truly great friends as they shared words of inspiration, words of Torah, and teased each other just a little bit. ______________________________________________________________ Useful Links: Shalom Rav: Insights on the Weekly Parasha volumes 1 and 2 by Rabbi Shalom Rosner Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz's Daf Yomi Shiur Rabbi Shalom Rosner's Daf Yomi Shiur Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz on Twitter Rabbi Rosner's recorded Shiurim Rabbi Lebowitz's recorded Shiurim | | Get 10% off your next order from www.korenpub.com with code PODCAST at checkout. Sometimes one decision can completely change the trajectory of your life! That's what happened to Natalia Cardona Puerta when she decided to follow her dreams of being an illustrator and uproot her life in Colombia. In this episode, I chat with Colombian illustrator Natalia Cardona Puerta who creates colorful and playful illustrations inspired by her ‘90s upbringing, her love for the outdoors, and her innermost feelings.Natalia “never in a million years” expected to leave Colombia, but after graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design she took a break and realized she wanted to reconnect with her creative voice. Eventually, her mom encouraged her to pursue a Master's degree and it all happened very quickly from there. One thing lead to the next and she was on a one-way flight to Georgia to pursue a Master's degree in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design.Nowadays, Natalia is going through the permanent residency process here in the U.S. to be able to live and work here long term. The legal process has been slow and frustrating. She feels it slowed down her post-grad momentum but she is taking this time to ”plant a lot of seeds” that are sure to blossom in the future.Tune into this episode to hear Natalia and I talk about growing up in Bogota, why she decided to immigrate to the U.S., and how she developed her illustration style after graduating.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or on your favorite podcast platform.EPISODE LINKS:Listener Survey: Take the survey to help me improve Season 2!Guest Links: Check out Natalia's Instagram and Portfolio.Host Links: Check out Fabiola Lara on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
