Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. This solo episode was an experiment. Of the things that have occupied my thoughts recently, I picked two, made one a starting point and the other an endpoint, and improvised my way from A to B. I'm pretty happy with it! As always, I'd love to know what you think.I talk about: no one actually understands AI, harm reduction, bubbles bursting, property over people, inane job interviews, reckoning with Tarkovsky, echo chambers, losing dreams, news flash: unemployment is hard and sad.Support the show and get the TIYA After Dark feed on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/thisisyourafterlifeDr. Fatima: How to (Anti) AI Better:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y85nqc2zm7MAnthopic, OpenAI Should Not Be Allowed to IPO, Says Ed Zitron:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbKDmkJPVvIFracTracker's U.S. Data Centers Tracker:https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/5a4d072ad01449bba5698a80103fb909/page/MapStop Bad Data Centers:https://datacenters.halttheharm.net/Food & Water WatchNo More New Data Centers!:https://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/2025/11/06/no-more-new-data-centers/How to Stop a Data Center Near You:https://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/2026/03/05/how-to-stop-a-data-center-near-you/Stop Data Centers Now! Flashback to 2017 - it's the second year of the show, we're in the middle of talking about FRIDAY THE 13th THE FINAL CHAPTER, and our guest, author and podcast host (Ladies Love Paul Rudd) Amy Pascale, coins the signature phrase of the show: #GetBunked. That's right, revisit history in the making in this episode as we say goodbye to Ted, Doug & Sara, discover the hidden connection between Harry Manfredini's soundtrack and “choo choo” trains, pitch a swell sounding 16 month-calendar idea based around Patrick's semi-nude body, solve the Bottom/Top Bunk Dilemma and dig into everyone's favorite new appetizer, “strip 'n dip,” and we face the tough Choose Your Own Deathventure. It's the most fun you'll have discussing wanton carnage at length this week! On this episode of Coastal Idiots, comedian and new dad Derrick Stroup attempts the impossible: teaching Shane and Katherine basic life skills. They debate Mountain Dew culture, relive legendary comedy stories involving Jon Lovitz, Post Malone and Frank Sinatra, discuss the glory days of road comedy with Raising Cane's in Alaska, and discover Derrick's surprisingly heartfelt retirement plan: checking into a Hampton Inn one last time and pretending there's a second show. Things spiral quickly when Derrick is forced to demonstrate how to change a diaper on a deeply unsettling baby doll. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Coastal Idiots is a weekly comedy podcast where each week your host Shane and Katherine are joined by a friend or two where they do something very stupid and hilarious. Charles Wesley Godwin is a country music artist and songwriter born and raised in Morgantown, West Virginia. He first discovered his passion for music in college, picking up a guitar after realizing his WVU football dreams weren't going to pan out and watching the Avett Brothers perform at the 2011 Grammys. He spent years developing his sound by playing small bars, cafes, and breweries across the country—often sleeping in his car—before breaking through with his independent 2019 debut album, Seneca. He is currently signed to Big Loud and Warner Chappell, and following the success of albums like How the Mighty Fall and Family Ties, he is preparing to release his newest record, Christian Name, on July 24th. In this episode, we discuss Charles's journey from playing his very first paid gig at a lingerie show in Estonia to building a nationwide audience. We dig into his early years trusting the tip jar on the road, the freezing winter studio sessions that shaped Seneca, navigating the pressures of the music business, and the night he almost quit music entirely. We also talk about why he considers songwriting to be his true creative high, his five-year wait to co-write with Lori McKenna, and many other stops along the way.--------------------------------------------------This episode is also sponsored by The Graphic Guitar Guys. They create eye-catching custom guitar wraps for some of the biggest artists and festivals in the music industry. Their work is perfect for adding a unique touch to album pre-sale bundles or VIP package items—check them out and discover how they can transform a guitar into a show-stopping work of art.---------------------------------------------------Troy Cartwright is a Nashville-based artist and songwriter originally from Dallas, Texas. His songs have collectively garnered hundreds of millions of streams, and he is currently signed to Big Machine Music for publishing. Cartwright has written songs recorded by Cody Johnson, Lee Brice, Nickelback, Ryan Hurd, Josh Abbott Band, and has upcoming cuts with several A-list artists.#CharlesWesleyGodwin #CountryMusic #TenYearTown #Songwriting #AltCountry #AmericanaMusic #CWG #ChristianName #Seneca #IndependentArtist #MusicPodcastNew Episodes every Tuesday.Find the host Troy Cartwright on Twitter, Instagram.  Social Channels for Ten Year Town:YoutubeFacebookInstagramTwitterTikTokThis podcast was produced by Ben VanMaarth. As we approach our official 10th anniversary, we wanted to gather our listening family together to share something truly special: death. That's right, we're knocking each other off and knocking it out of the park with one of the best horror films of the 2010s, YOU'RE NEXT! Along the way, we wonder what possessed Lionsgate to keep this movie on the shelf for so long, celebrate one of the greatest final girls to ever grace the silver screen, dissect all of the “mumblecore” all-stars featured in this f*cked up family, and worship at the altar of legendary Barbara Crampton! All this, plus underground film festivals, speed competitions, blood blindness, too many scarves, McBrain Flurries, blah morkturtlenecks, soap opera spandex, bad makeout spots, and dine out with a sumptuous edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure. Laci and Matt kick off the Summer of Nolan with a look at Nolan's early career—his feature debut Following (1998) and then his breakout hit Memento (2001). But first, we share our big-picture thoughts on Christopher Nolan: Why is he the world's most popular director? Does he identify too much with J. Robert Oppenheimer? Is he too boring and well-adjusted to make a good subject for a podcast miniseries? Like his hero Steven Spielberg, Nolan didn't attend film school. Instead, he taught himself to make movies by making movies. He self-financed and produced Following a few hours at a time, but it already showed his gifts as a director and the writing and editing styles that would become hallmarks of all his future films. Working on a considerably larger budget, Nolan then made Memento, which became an indie sensation on the late-90s/early-2000s film festival circuit. It then became a surprise hit at the box office and an even bigger success on home video, launching Nolan's storied Hollywood career. 1-Week Rental tells the story of Memento before diving deep into a discussion and analysis of the movie itself. Watch this episode in full on YouTube: https://youtu.be/c5RuE5-Xv1A  Next week (June 19, 2026). The Summer of Nolan continues with Batman Begins (2005)! The Summer of Nolan is our summer 2026 miniseries covering the movie career of Christopher Nolan through nine movies on the main feed (plus additional episodes on the Patreon!), presented in chronological order, starting with Memento and going through Oppenheimer. Research and Rabbit Holes for TDF "The Lady in Black"After our first-ever watch-together episode, it was time to do what we do best: pull on every loose historical thread we could find and see where it led. Spoiler alert: it led to failed divorces, mysterious house histories, censured juries, tornadoes, and at least one rabbit hole that ended in a spectacular dead end. This week, Amy brings the receipts leaving listeners and Megan equally surprised by every twist and turn. We discuss a podcast review so sweet it nearly makes us cry, the accidental Midwestern art of saying "uff da" and "ope," and why the best podcasts feel less like shows and more like hanging out with friends. Then we head back to Marshalltown, Iowa, where the questions only get stranger. Did the house have a dark history before Kelly and Mike moved in? Did their paranormal investigations bring something home with them? Why did previous residents report nothing unusual? And how exactly does a house drop nearly 70% in price?Along the way, we uncover an eerie letter from the homeowners themselves, featuring flying wine glasses, mystery scratches, grandchildren chatting with an old woman upstairs, and a laptop that somehow froze on a photograph of Angie Braddock's gravestone before anyone knew who she was. The traditional The Assistant Professor of Football season round-up is back. I asked guests from this past year, and some from previous years whose clubs had remarkable seasons of one sort or the other how their clubs have fared, what moment stands out, and what song best embodies their club's vibe this past season. They are:Medea Voegeli, professional historian and historian of FC Thun, from episode 76. Thun are the utterly sensational champions of Switzerland this year — after just having been promoted — so Medea has a lot of good vibes to share. Then Paul Reidy, our English correspondent at Rayo Vallecano; that club portrait is episode 46. Rayo made it to the final of the best European club competition outside the Champions League, the Conference League. They lost against Crystal Palace, but this is their greatest success.Another finalist: SC Freiburg, from episode 49. Freiburg made it to the Europa League final. They also lost against an English team, Aston Villa. Patrick Bucher from the club's history working group has a lot of stories to tell from his days at the final in Istanbul.Next up is Alana McDougall, a historian at the University of Guelph in Canada who published a fabulous people's history of Liverpool and joined us in episode 72 — she's back to analyze a rather mixed season for them. Then Stefan Wally, a political scientist and Austria Salzburg aficionado, on that club in the second Austrian league. They earned promotion last year and absolutely held their own — including a derby with the Red Bull farm team that tried to finish them off.And last but not least: two teams who got relegated but also see some hope on the horizon, because their relegation has triggered — or at least coincides with — much-needed changes in ownership and leadership at their respective clubs: West Ham and 1860 Munich.West Ham were relegated from the Premier League, as I'm sure you know. That is my club in England, and Alex — who is hard at work organizing supporters for change and for atmosphere at West Ham — gives us his take. And 1860… well, never a dull day there. The Jordanian investor withheld funds, the club was forced to drop out of the third German league, and it looks like that means — freedom, finally, for 1860. Claus Melchior from 1860's section on club history will give us the download.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE: Dubioza Kolektiv - I am from Bosnia, Take me to America (new music video, YouTube)NEW: send me a text message! I don't tend to use the word "periodizing" for the project of This Is Your Afterlife, but when I ask my guests, "What's your coma?," I'm absolutely "categorizing the past into discrete, quantified, and named blocks of time for the purpose of study or analysis" (thanks, Wikipedia). Periodization is the explicit project of The Return of the 90s: A Cultural History of the Present, a new book edited by Sean O'Brien and TIYA friend Madeline Lane-McKinley. In another two-episode week, I'm talking to them about this cultural criticism project and personalizing it. What world did the 90s leave us with? What do we make of the decade's resurgence? And what does it mean if the world we remember never existed in the first place?First up is Sean's solo episode, in which I roll out the purple carpet to give him the same TIYA treatment Madeline got with her solo episode. Then on Friday, I talk to them both in a more free-form conversation about the book, so stay tuned! We talk: an intro to Marxism, the need for sleep, WIRED magazine, afterlife as anti-work utopia, prostrating at the altar of academia, lessons he learned from watching his mother die with grace.Support the show and get the TIYA After Dark feed on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/thisisyourafterlifeThe Return of the 90s: A Cultural History of the Present:https://www.plutobooks.com/product/the-return-of-the-90s/Follow Sean and find out about book events:https://twitter.com/sean_obeehttps://www.instagram.com/sean_ob/Listen to Sean on Genre Reveal Party!, my movie podcast with Madeline:https://pod.link/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5jYXB0aXZhdGUuZm0vZ2VucmUtcmV2ZWFsLXBhcnR5Lw/episode/N2VkOTY1M2ItOTgwMy00OWQwLWIyZmQtYzdlNDA2M2QyYTlmFollow/contact This Is Your Afterlife:https://thisisyourafterlife.com/https://www.instagram.com/thisisyourafterlife/thisisyourafterlifepodcast@gmail.comMusic by TIYA house band Lake Mary:https://lakemary.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/chaz.prymek/Artwork by Matt Sage:https://www.instagram.com/matthewjsage/

We venture forth to the nerd cave this week to discuss Smile (2022) and Smile 2 (2024), both directed by Parker Finn, and what begins as a serious conversation about trauma, grief, and psychological horror immediately mutates into a 90-minute brainstorming session about how challenging the Smile Demon to a Mario Kart battle in space somehow makes sense? Look, if Leprechaun and Hellraiser can go to space, then this Demon-thing can, too.As we dive deep into Parker Finn's increasingly cursed universe of hallucinations and nightmare logic, we also break down why Smile worked so well as a psychological horror film, and how Smile 2 somehow managed to crank every dial into the red like a caffeinated psychopath that says, “What if we made everything worse?”Naturally, the convo asks the obvious questions such as:Is the Smile Demon secretly living its best life? Would the franchise improve if future sequels took place in Victorian England? Would Smile 9: Smile Harder feature Joker gas? Could Kyle Gallner have defeated the curse by challenging it to Mario Kart in low Earth orbit? The answer to at least one of these questions is apparently yes.We also celebrate everything that makes the franchise work:The relentless rug-pull hallucinations The terrifying "wait... is that person real? momentsThe increasingly horrifying mythology The monster design that somehow consists mostly of teeth and yet still makes everyone want to leave the room immediately By the end of the episode, we ultimately conclude that if you ever find yourself haunted by an ancient smiling nightmare creature, skip the therapy session, skip the drug dealer, skip the exposition, and immediately launch yourself into space.Checkmate, demon.CREEP-O-RAMA is: Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio: @stranjlove
