Today, it's how training camp injuries impact player pay and the team's salary cap situation. When players are injured and out for the season, there are number of ways they can be paid, some of them friendlier to the team and some friendlier to the player. It all comes down to the specific contract. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday that the gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building before taking his own life was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League, but took the wrong elevator. Officials identified the alleged shooter as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old with an address in Nevada. The suspect allegedly carried a note with him that appeared to blame the NFL for a degenerative brain disease he claimed to have had. Las Vegas law enforcement told New York authorities that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues.President Donald Trump wrapped up his five-day visit to Scotland with the opening of a new golf course at one of his sprawling properties there. Trump said he will focus on addressing crises in the Middle East and elsewhere after he arrives back in Washington.
The focal point of our discourse in this episode revolves around the extraordinary and multifaceted career of Charlie Berry, a unique figure in the annals of American sports history. Berry's exceptional achievements encompass his participation as both a player in Major League Baseball and the National Football League, as well as his subsequent roles as a prominent umpire and official in both sports. Throughout our exploration, we delve into the nuances of his career, which includes his notable contributions to the 1925 Pottsville Maroons, a team that, despite its championship aspirations, faced a controversial fate. Additionally, we examine Berry's remarkable tenure as a baseball umpire, where he officiated landmark events, such as Don Larson's perfect game in the World Series and the famed 1958 NFL Championship, often hailed as the greatest game ever played. As we progress, we aim to illuminate the significance of Charlie Berry's legacy, which, despite its obscurity in contemporary discourse, remains a testament to the rich tapestry of sports history.Companies mentioned in this episode: Sports History Network Sports Forgotten Heroes Charlie Berry Cal Hubbard Pro Football Hall of Fame Baseball Hall of Fame Pottsville Maroons Don Larson New York Giants Baltimore Colts Philadelphia Athletics Boston Red Sox Chicago White Sox Eager Sculpture Ingersoll Rand Mentioned in this episode:Sports History Network Theme SongThis theme song was produced by Ron "Tyke" Oliver of Music Meets Sportz https://sites.google.com/view/sportsfanztastic?usp=sharing
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how to evaluate results from training camp. The Steelers are facing themselves every single day, so every time there's a good play by one player, unit or side of the ball, that means the opposite entity has given up a big play. It can make it tough to evaluate what's really happening at times. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
As today's show begins we learn of a possible motive in the murder of four people in a midtown Manhattan mass shooting. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, walked into a Park Avenue high-rise with an assault-style rifle and opened fire. That building is home to the corporate offices of the National Football League. A source tells CNN a suicide note was found on Tamura's body, and the shooter wrote he was suffering from CTE, a brain disease linked to head trauma, which can be caused by contact sports. Welcome to the fourth and final State of the Sport, where we we have been taking a hard look at what is REALLY going on in various sports over the summer with a subject matter expert.Today, Friend of the Show Christian Hinton will be dissecting the current State of the National Football League. The NFL is a sport, that is now, mainly about one position: quarterback. If you have one, you win a lot of games. If you do not, you lose a lot of games. It is that simple.Around the league, there's a lot of interesting storylines coming into the season. Can the Philadelphia Eagles repeat as Super Bowl Champions? Can the Chiefs become the first team in NFL history to make the Super Bowl in six out of the past seven seasons and win three Super Bowls in a four-year span or will a team like the Ravens or Bills finally break through in the AFC? Which rookies will breakout and which new signal caller will give their fanbase a reason to believe again, the way Jayden Daniels did for the Commanders last season. For every thought of hope, there is also a thought of failure. Which teams that have Super Bowl expectations will be disappointed by their fanbases and what teams will have their seasons end by the middle of September? And now ladies and gentleman, let me introduce to you, the man who is going to help the audience of Brandon's World understand the State of the NFL. He is Christian Hinton

In 1898, a 16-year-old dreamer named Leo Lyons was tossing a football around a Rochester, NY sandlot. Within two years, he wasn't just playing—he was managing, coaching, and bankrolling a team that would become an National Football League charter member: the Rochester Jeffersons. This week, we sit down with authors Jeffrey Miller and John Steffenhagen to explore their powerful new book, "Leo Lyons, the Rochester Jeffersons and the Birth of the NFL" - the unbelievable-but-true story of how one man's relentless vision helped shape pro football's earliest days. From challenging Jim Thorpe's Canton Bulldogs and signing Black players decades before integration, to mortgaging his house and offering Red Grange $5,000 per game, Lyons' tale is one of grit, guts, and heartbreak. With exclusive access to the Leo Lyons Collection, Miller and Steffenhagen uncover the backroom deals, sandlot beginnings, and forgotten heroes behind the NFL's formation. It's a story of ambition, obsession — and a dream that changed American sports forever. (The Center Square) – Cities that host the NFL Draft have seen small increases in hotel revenue in recent years but those gains are far smaller than what is claimed by teams, the National Football League and the marketing and tourism departments in local government have claimed. The first three cities to host the draft after it left New York saw insignificant changes in hotel stays during the event while host cities since 2019 have seen between $4 million and $6 million in hotel revenue increases due to the event, according to a new paper provided to The Center Square from economist E. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the Steelers' defensive coverage options in the secondary and how a change in the type of zone defense they call could be beneficial. The Steelers have always been a team that primarily runs Cover 3, prioritizing stopping the run over softer zone coverages like Cover 2. But there is another option that is becoming more popular around the NFL that could be a fit for the Steelers, and that's Cover 4 or quarters. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's trying to project the roster battles in the Steelers secondary. With the addition of Jalen Ramsey, the Steelers have seven cornerbacks who finished the 2024 season on an NFL roster, and they also have seventh-round draft pick Donte Kent in competition for a roster spot. Is seven too many, and does it matter where Ramsey plays? What about the suddenly-thin free safety spot after the trade of Minkah Fitzpatrick? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's trying to rank the quarterbacks in the 2026 NFL Draft class. Which, of course, is a fool's errand. The NFL teams that will spend millions of dollars between now and next April attempting to do that have a 100% chance of getting it wrong. So who cares what anyone thinks now? Arch Manning is probably the prospect in the class with the highest upside, but it's a real question as to whether he'll even come out. You can make good arguments for an against the likes of LaNorris Sellers, Drew Allar, Cade Klubnik, Fernando Mendoza, Garrett Nussmeier and Nico Iamaleava, and there are plenty more that could play their way into that conversation. The real question isn't who's best, it's who will be available when the Steelers are on the clock -- or how far up they'll have to go to get a franchise quarterback. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the Steelers big trade with the Miami Dolphins last week and how general manager Omar Khan is counting on Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff to make the pieces fit. The Steelers got the best of the trade with the Dolphins, adding a more-valuable secondary piece in Jalen Ramsey in addition to Jonnu Smith in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick. But it's not immediately clear how all the pieces will fit together, and if the coaching staff can't make it work, it will open fair questions about the quality of the trade and their future. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the Steelers offseason, including Monday's big trade with the Miami Dolphins, and how much they're focused on trying to beat -- or be -- the Baltimore Ravens. The 2025 season fell apart for Pittsburgh, thanks to a five-game losing streak to close the season that included two losses to the Ravens. The latter, in the playoffs, involved Baltimore racking up nearly 300 rushing yards against the Steelers defense. So how much of what Omar Khan is doing this offseason has been about trying to reverse the trend against the Ravens, and possibly even taking some of Baltimore's ideas for themselves? Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how the trade to acquire tight end Jonnu Smith has continued an offseason-long trend of catering to the personality and scheme of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith -- putting the pressure on him to increase the performance of his offense. The Steelers acquired Smith, making him the third former Smith protege on the current roster, joining Cordarrelle Patterson and Scotty Miller. In addition to players that have played for Smith before, the Steelers have also made moves to help better fit his scheme, grabbing Aaron Rodgers instead of Russell Wilson and drafting Kaleb Johnson instead of keeping Najee Harris. Smith did a good job last year in his first season as the Steelers offensive coordinator, but the unprecedented level of service to his scheme and personality fit this offseason definitely ramps up the pressure to be an above-average offense in 2025. The future homes of the Chiefs and Royals is becoming a Border War. Missouri and Kansas have come up with incentives to build stadiums, or renovate Arrowhead for the Chiefs. The latest development: A letter from Chiefs President Mark Donovan asking Kansas to extend the deadline beyond June 30 for STAR bonds that would be used to pay for up to 70 percent of stadium projects. “Together,” Donovan write, “we have the opportunity to bring the National Football League to Kansas, anchored by a world-class domed stadium, new team headquarters, a state-of-the-art practice facility, and a vibrant mixed-use and entertainment district.” This comes on the heels of Missouri passing the Show-Me Sports Investment Act, which also sweetens the deal for the teams, paying up to half for the teams' new homes.
