Character changes lives before talent. God will lift up the humble to confound the wise of this world. The old saying is this... "God does not choose the qualified, He qualifies the chosen." Even the National Football League (NFL) understands that great character trumps great skills. Listen in and find out how they identify this in the recent draft. Also, find out how a young lady whose character was so great that the Oval Office chose this small town girl to serve in the White House for two Terms. _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? In a surprise move that instantly reshapes the league's historical narrative, the National Football League last month announced it will now officially incorporate statistics from the upstart All-America Football Conference (AAFC), the short-lived but impactful rival professional football league that operated from 1946 to 1949. The decision brings long-overdue recognition to the achievements of several prominent players from the mid-20th century and results in the revision of several long-standing records in the NFL's official record books. Renowned early pro football historian Ken Crippen ("The All-America Football Conference: Players, Coaches, Records, Games and Awards" and "The Original Buffalo Bills: A History of the All-America Football Conference Team") returns to the show (after a seven-year absence) to help us break down the NFL owners' decision to finally recognize the AAFC, as well as the historical significance of the move - which further burnishes the statistical legacies of star players like Y.A. Tittle (Baltimore Colts), Mac Speedie and Otto Graham (Cleveland Browns); Cleveland's iconic Paul Brown; and, most obviously the original Browns franchise - the only league champion the AAFC ever knew. Plus, the bizarre story of how the original AAFC statistical records were providentially rescued from a New York City dumpster shortly after the announcement of the merger with the NFL in 1949! + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old Fort Baseball Co. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers should start rookie quarterback Will Howard in the 2025 season. There is obviously a chance that Howard, the team's sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, wins the job outright. Mason Rudolph should not provide overwhelming competition and Aaron Rodgers still remains a free agent months into the offseason. But what about if Howard doesn't win the job? Should the Steelers put their finger on the scale to play Howard, just so that they can see him before they have to make a decision about whether or not to draft a quarterback -- and how highly -- in the 2026 NFL Draft? The 1949 season of the Philadelphia Eagles stands as a remarkable testament to the team's legendary prowess, culminating in their second consecutive National Football League championship. At the forefront of this triumph were distinguished athletes such as Steve Van Buren, a formidable halfback known as "wham bam," and the electrifying receiver Pete Pihos, whose remarkable skill transformed broken plays into moments of magic. Guided by the astute coaching of Greasy Neale, the Eagles showcased a blend of tenacity and tactical acumen, decisively defeating their opponents with a combination of robust defense and dynamic offense. As we delve into this epoch of gridiron glory, we explore the camaraderie among the players and the strategic innovations that defined their successful campaign. Join us as we recount the exhilarating highlights and intricate narratives that encapsulate this unforgettable chapter in football history.I, along with our esteemed guest Brian Michael, delve into the intricacies of that season, characterized by the Eagles' remarkable transformation from perennial underperformers to champions, primarily attributed to the astute leadership of Coach Greasy Neal and the contributions of key players such as Steve Van Buren.Find Brian's books and vintage sports clothing at ShibeVintageSports.com.Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website and the Sports Jersey Dispatch to see even more Positive football news! Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers will be willing to sign a second wide receiver to a long-term contract extension after already agreeing to a deal with DK Metcalf, and what a new contract with George Pickens might look like. The Steelers have not signed multiple wide receivers to big-time contracts in their recent past, but that also came while the team was paying big money to Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. The doesn't mean they won't pay two receivers while they're not paying a big-time quarterback. Part of the money that quarterback is earning is the assumption that he won't need high-priced receivers to succeed. Will the Steelers want to extend Pickens? It doesn't seem that they're charging into the offseason with that as the plan. After around $300,000 in fines over the last two seasons, the Steelers would probably like to see an increased level of maturity from Pickens before committing to a long-term deal. If they do decide to sign Pickens, how much will he cost? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's some process-related questions about the end of the 2025 NFL Draft. Our first question is whether players that were under-drafted compared to their expectations like Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers can change their minds and go back to school? Also, how does the signing process work for undrafted rookies, or UDFAs? And what's the difference between when a player is released and when a player is waived? Alan breaks it down. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how Omar Khan and the rest of the NFL general managers are preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft. The Steelers and other NFL teams don't use mock drafts in the traditional sense, and they build their own board when it comes to which players they want to draft. The Pittsburgh draft board is run by Andy Weidl, with inputs from all of the team's coaches and scouts, including Khan and Mike Tomlin. That board will determine who the Steelers will draft, based on who is available at the time. But there's another part of the process, that involves how to know whether a team should be trading up or back to get the player they really want, and that's a newer innovation as part of Khan's ascension to the general manager role. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether or not the Steelers would be a good destination for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. On Monday, ESPN's Mike Greenberg broke down how not being taken early in the draft is not necessarily a death sentence for a first-round quarterback. Greenberg pointed out that the second player taken has been better in each of the last two classes, and most of the top quarterbacks in the league were not the first player taken. Unsaid is the idea that those players had more success because the teams that draft at the top often do because of their own incompetence. But are the Steelers a better team to develop a quarterback?. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, we discuss the career of Charley Johnson; continue with our reasons why Harold Jackson should be in the HOF; the best NFL players born in Germany; the underrated Paul Krause, and bad passing and bad Astroturf. Quotes of the week (couldn't pick between them): 1) I'll take a seven man sled over a tractor; and 2) If you are dumb enough to step on the end line, and you're still willing to tangle with some guy coming at your throat, be my guest."
We are just a few short days away from the NFL Draft and more than a dozen former Ohio State players are ready to hear their name called and make that next step up the football ladder, to the National Football League. Let's take a look at where some experts have many of the draft hopefuls.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the Steelers have changed course when it comes to selecting a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft. At the end of the 2024 NFL Draft cycle, the two positions that the Steelers needed to address but didn't have the capital to do so were wide receiver and defensive tackle. The Steelers immediately turned to the trade market to address the acute need at wide receiver, first targeting Brandon Aiyuk before eventually landing DK Metcalf earlier this offseason. The need at defensive tackle was more big picture, so the assumption was that they'd wait until the 2025 NFL Draft, a class that looked deep at the position. When the Steelers top brass spent the 2025 Senior Bowl obsessing over that position, it seemed likely that was the way they'd lean in this year's draft. But things have changed. The Steelers were unable to work out a deal with either of their incumbent quarterback options, and haven't been able to land Aaron Rodgers, either, leaving their depth chart relatively barren late into April. There's also some shifting winds about who might be available to them at quarterback, with the chance of Shedeur Sanders falling to No. 21 overall now becoming likely enough that the team is taking it seriously. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the Steelers are waiting to resolve things with free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers before they negotiate a contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt brought the topic of his contract extension into the forefront with his curious social media post, but in reality, the Steelers do not generally talk contact extensions with current players until later in the summer. They deal with trying to re-sign players before they hit free agency, then talk to free agents, then deal with the draft, wrap up second-wave free agency in May, and then deal with their own players in the summer. That's the way they've always done business, and while part of the idea behind Watt's post might have been to develop a sense of urgency with his process, the Steelers not wanting to talk turkey with their defensive star doesn't have anything to do with Rodgers. The Steelers have plenty plenty of salary cap space available to sign Rodgers right now -- well over $30 million -- and they can painlessly make plenty of more with a couple of restructures. That's more than enough money to sign Rodgers now. A new deal with Watt is likely to reduce his 2025 salary cap hit, and could reduce it substantially, so the cap is not at all standing in the way of the Steelers doing business with both Rodgers and Watt. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the reporting surrounding the pre-draft meeting between the top Pittsburgh brass and Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Shedeur Sanders. Sanders came to Pittsburgh for a pre-draft visit late in the process, and the reporting surround that visit has been strange, with some breathlessly discussing the length of the visit (five hours is perfectly average) and others baselessly claiming it didn't go well. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the pending contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt will almost certainly get a contract extension in the range of the four-year, $160 million contract the Cleveland Browns gave Myles Garrett earlier this offseason. While that seems like a lot, it's actually a smaller percentage of the salary cap than the deal Nick Bosa signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 and represents a bargain for his production. What about a trade? Is it possible to get the kind of value a team would need to trade a player of the caliber of Watt? Alan breaks it down. #steelers #herewego #nfl Learn more about your ad choices. Estos son los jugadores que considero son los mejores defensivos del Draft de este año. Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter encabezan esta lista.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the names for the positions that defensive linemen line up in. The Steelers traditionally play in a 3-4 defense, which uses a nose tackle and two defensive ends. Some teams use a 4-3, with two defensive ends and two defensive tackles. But those defensive ends are not the same. In the Steelers' base defense, the ends play directly over or just inside the tackle, while ends in a 4-3 play well outside, sometimes even outside the tight ends. That makes 4-3 defensive ends more similar to Pittsburgh outside linebackers. Instead of vague descriptions like end and tackle, NFL teams have a system to break down each possible defensive line alignment, starting with a zero technique, which is a true nose tackle over the center, and moving outward from there. So when the Steelers are looking at defensive lineman, what do we mean when we saw three-technique or five-technique? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Arranca la temporada de Mock Drafts con la primera edición proyectando la ronda 1 del NFL Draft 2025.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the team can or will put all of its eggs in the 2026 NFL Draft quarterback basket. The 2026 NFL Draft quarterback class is expected to be a very strong one, led by players like Texas' Arch Manning, Penn State's Drew Allar and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier. But as shown over the weekend, what looks like it will happen next year does not always come to pass. Nico Iamaleava was expected to be in that list before he departed Tennessee amid an NIL dispute over the weekend. Will he still be? It's possible but far from certain at this point. Even if the Steelers are able to trade up into the middle of a deep quarterback class, there's no guarantee they'd hit on that pick. Maybe they'd get the next Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe they'd get Phillip Rivers, his less-successful but still-good draft classmate. Maybe they'd get J.P. Losman. That's why the Steelers are still looking hard the 2025 NFL Draft class, because nothing in the future is certain, and even if they don't take a quarterback early in next week's draft, they'll probably take one at some point. Armagh captain Clodagh McCambridge speaks to John Duggan ahead of Saturday evening's Lidl Women's National Football League final clash with Kerry at Croke Park.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers could or would trade up for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. We're talked a lot about Steelers general manager Omar Khan hoarding compensatory draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and with that selection taking place in Pittsburgh, and a strong class of quarterbacks expected, trading up then is a very attractive option for the Steelers. But what about using those comp picks to move up in the 2025 NFL Draft for a player like Shedeur Sanders? While possible, that idea comes with some pitfalls. Alan breaks it down. It's our long-overdue dive into one of the most controversial stories in National Football League history — the tale of the Pottsville Maroons and its stolen 1925 championship — with ESPN journalist and author David Fleming, whose acclaimed 2007 book "Breaker Boys: The NFL's Greatest Team and the Stolen 1925 Championship" is newly apropos on the 100th anniversary of what many consider to be pro football's most egregious historical blunder. Fleming guides us through the dramatic rise and fall of the Maroons — an Eastern Pennsylvania coal-country semi-pro team born of grit, visionary coaching, and the raw determination of hard-working, hardscrabble working-class miners/players/characters, like Tony 'The Human Howitzer' Latone. We'll trace how this unlikely squad stormed into the NFL in 1925, defeated its powerhouse Chicago Cardinals in the ostensible title game, and then toppled a heavily-favored University of Notre Dame "Four Horsemen" squad in a much-hyped exhibition match. But their moment of triumph became their undoing. The NFL suspended the team for allegedly violating territorial rights for the game — a charge hotly contested to this day — and stripped them of the title. Instead, the Cardinals were awarded the championship, and Pottsville was left with nothing but heartbreak. Hear how the Maroons' win over the Fighting Irish actually helped legitimize a still-fledgling NFL — and how the league "repaid" them with what many call the worst injustice in pro football history. We'll explore the political maneuvering behind the decision, the 100-year fight for redemption, and what it reveals about the NFL's ownership power dynamics, both then and now. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats 417 Helmets (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://417helmets.com/?wpam_id=3 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "Breaker Boys: The NFL's Greatest Team and the Stolen 1925 Championship": https://amzn.to/43C5atA FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/
