In just over two years' time, some of the world's best female footballers will take to the field in New Zealand and Australia. Today FIFA announced four New Zealand cities will host matches for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. That means celebration for Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin but Christchurch misses out. Felicity Reid reports.
The football community across New Zealand is in celebration mode after the country was awarded the rights to host the 2023 Women's World Cup alongside Australia. A vote of the FIFA Council in Zurich at 4am Friday saw the trans-Tasman partnership comfortably prevail over lone rival Colombia. But with just three years to now prepare for the world's biggest women's sports event, those who drove the bid are already looking towards recruiting a team to make it happen.
