Send us a textAre you feeling exhausted, irritable, foggy-brained, or experiencing night sweats that leave you drenched? These symptoms aren't just "part of getting older" – they're signs of hormonal changes that can be effectively treated. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Val Schulte joins midwives Missi and Cara to demystify perimenopause and menopause with straightforward, evidence-based information that healthcare providers often miss."I can't describe how excited I am about today," says Missi at the start, acknowledging that many midwives received minimal education about menopause, especially after the Women's Health Initiative study created widespread fear around hormone therapy. Dr. Schulte, who transitioned from traditional OBGYN practice to focusing on hormone therapy and lifestyle medicine, shares how her own perimenopausal symptoms sparked her passion for helping women navigate this transition. The conversation dives deep into practical aspects of hormone testing and treatment options. Dr. Schulte explains how bioidentical progesterone can improve sleep and mood, why testosterone (often overlooked in women) dramatically affects energy and libido, and how proper estrogen therapy protects heart, brain, and bone health. She details the advantages of different delivery methods – from daily creams to pellet therapy that slowly releases hormones over months – and dispels myths about hormone risks. What makes this episode especially valuable is the real-talk about symptoms many women experience but rarely discuss: brain fog that interferes with work, anxiety that appears out of nowhere, joint pain, changes in body odor, even ridges in fingernails. Dr. Schulte connects these seemingly unrelated issues to hormonal fluctuations and offers solutions beyond the standard "here's an antidepressant" approach many providers default to.Whether you're approaching perimenopause, in the thick of menopause, or supporting someone who is, this conversation provides clarity and hope. As Missy realizes toward the end, "I do not have to feel this way for another five years." This episode brings the trio—Burso, Fitzy, and Joe—back together for a mix of trail-running prep, personal stories, and absolute chaos. With Joe signed up to run the first 19km leg of the Surf Coast Trail Marathon (while still recovering from Influenza A), and his mate Chris doing the second leg, the episode dives into the unfiltered realities of amateur endurance sports: the motivation, the gear, the setbacks, and the questionable preparation. There's no shortage of friendly roasting and classic Fitzy shade as the boys cover everything from text message ghosting, to accidental podium finishes, to toe trauma. Joe admits to doing “almost zero prep” for this race, aside from a solid pasta meal and packing some emergency Skittles. He reflects on the brutal Wilson's Prom Marathon, where dehydration and searing granite heat saw him sheltering under a tree for 15 minutes before walking the final 6K—only to discover he'd placed on the podium due to mass DNFs.Open-ended questions this episode answers:Can you run a trail marathon without training and still have fun—or even place? What's more important—running tech or snacks? Why do your toenails always betray you when the running gets tough? Can banter, resilience, and a bit of stubbornness carry you through a cold 19km?The episode also explores the infamous Surf Coast Century, the appeal of team-based endurance events, and the possibility of putting together veteran teams for bigger challenges. Fitzy, ever the pragmatist, gives gear tips while shaming everyone's Strava usage. Meanwhile, Joe's story about getting his best half-marathon time after stepping off a submarine becomes one of the many “how the hell did that happen?” moments. But it's not all running. From Burso being taunted by an 11-year-old parkrun assassin, to Fitzy's blackened toenails, and heated arm-wrestle rivalries with tattooed authors, there's no shortage of off-track stories that make this episode a rollercoaster of laughs and relatable chaos.

Today I'm talking with Flo Schirmer about "sweaty startups", a term for old-fashioned, low-risk businesses that are often service based and unsexy. I'm talking window cleaning, car washing, self-storage, house moving and more. We're going to discuss if you can do this as a side hustle, if you should do this over a regular software business, and what you need to do to get started with some ideas along the way.Timestamps00:00 Intro01:38 What is a sweaty startup?03:18 From window cleaning to home security04:37 How to start a sweaty startup06:41 Growth for a sweaty startup07:26 Sweaty startup vs software - what is best for indie hackers?08:45 Injecting a tech edge into old fashioned businesses11:34 Examples of successful sweaty startup brands13:58 Two free sweaty startup ideas15:57 RecommendationsRecommendationsBook - $100m LeadsPodcast - My First MillionIndie Hacker - Alex HormoziMy linksTwitterIndie Bites TwitterIndie Bites YouTubeJoin the membershipPersonal Website2 Hour Podcast CourseSponsor - EmailOctopus
Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
In this episode, we explore the challenges and opportunities that midlife brings, focusing on how setbacks like divorce, empty nesting, or career changes can be turned into periods of transformation and growth. When our guests Joey and Lucy (hosts of the popular podcast Sweaty AF, met in a small London sauna five years ago, they were both going through the darkest chapters of their lives. Divorce proceedings, sleepless nights, hormone chaos, and that crushing feeling that their bodies had completely betrayed them. What happened next in that tiny, three-person sauna changed everything. This is the raw, honest story of how two women discovered that healing happens when you're willing to sit with discomfort – literally and figuratively. From averaging just 2-3 hours of sleep per night to building thriving businesses, transforming their relationships with their ex-husbands, and creating a community that spans continents, Joey and Lucy prove that midlife isn't about decline – it's about renaissance. They delve into the benefits of hot and cold therapy, the importance of sleep, the value of walking and natural daylight, and how creating a supportive community can lead to an overall 'glow up'. If you're feeling stuck, isolated, or like your best years are behind you, this conversation will remind you that healing and friendship can happen anywhere – even in a sweaty box with strangers who become your closest confidants. He shares his personal journey from a college storage business that sold for $1.75 million to purchasing and improving self-storage facilities worth millions. The conversation explores various low-tech business opportunities with high profit potential and minimal competition.00:00 - Intro02:08 - Nick's Sweaty Startup journey05:20 - Self-storage facility investments and returns07:31 - Examples of profitable service businesses13:13 - Sweaty Startup Idea: Night Nurse Marketplace18:49 - Value of a Good Domain Names22:25 - The AI + Sweaty Startups OpportunityKey Points• Nick Huber shares his journey building "boring" but profitable businesses, including Storage Squad and self-storage facilities• Sweaty startups (service-based local businesses) often have less competition and higher success rates than tech startups• Simple marketing tactics like sidewalk chalk, bandit signs, and local networking can be highly effective for service businesses• Domain names are valuable digital real estate worth investing in for business credibility and growth1) The WEALTHY people in your town aren't tech foundersThey own boring businesses:• Underground utilities• Surveying companies• HVAC businesses• Real estate developmentWhile everyone's dreaming of being the next Elon, these folks are quietly building wealth.2) Nick's first million came from... college student storage! He built Storage Squad with:• $1500 Craigslist cargo van• $2200 box truck• SIDEWALK CHALK as his only marketingGrew to $2.2M in revenue, sold for $1.75M in 2020.No tech, no VC money, just hustle.3) Self-storage facilities = GOLD MINES Nick bought a neglected facility for $625K with:• 40,000+ square feet• 180+ units• Only making $4K/monthAnother facility they bought for $1.5M now generates $40K/month and is worth $4.5M!4) "Sweaty startups" are EVERYWHERE making serious money:• Lawn care: $100K+ working 9 months/year• Mobile detailing: $17K revenue/$10K profit PER MONTH• High-end transportation: Consistent 6-figure income• Tree removal: $3K for 4 hours of work (2 people)All with minimal startup costs!5) The DOMAIN NAME lesson that most miss:Nick paid $450K for [Somewhere.com](http://somewhere.com/) and says it's already delivered MORE value than that."People will spend millions on physical real estate but balk at a few thousand for digital real estate - the home of your business."6) The COMPETITION ADVANTAGE of sweaty startups:Would you rather compete against:• Stanford CS grad with $20M in VC fundingOR• Local business owner who doesn't answer phones on Monday afternoons?Choose your competition wisely!7) BEST BUSINESS IDEA from the pod: Night Nurse Marketplace• Domain available for $13K (or $1,100/month lease-to-own)• Target new parents needing overnight baby care• Build directory + blog with AI• Charge $1K finder's fee to match families with nurses$20K+ monthly potential!8) The AI + SWEATY STARTUP opportunity:The best AI companies might start as sweaty startups first.Build the customer base and trust with a service business, THEN layer in tech and AI solutions. This is how you build something valuable without competing with 1000 other AI startups.Notable Quotes:"The wealthy people that I know, the ones with giant beach houses in the outer banks and private jets at the local airport, almost all of them did something boring." - Nick Huber"Do you want to compete against LeBron James or a fifth grade girl in basketball? In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview Erica Rooney—chief people officer, executive coach, and now, author of Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floors: Shattering Limiting Beliefs and Toxic Behaviors to Uncover Infinite Possibilities. And let me tell you, this chat was a must-hear for any woman who has ever felt stuck, doubted herself, or hesitated to take a big leap (yep, that's all of us!). Erica gets it. She's been there. She climbed the corporate ladder, got to the top, and thought… “Wait, this is it?” She realized that women in the workplace weren't just battling glass ceilings—they were also stuck on sticky floors like imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and burnout. Sound familiar? One of the wildest stats she shared? Women will look at a job posting and if they don't meet 100% of the qualifications, they won't even apply. Meanwhile, men apply if they check off just 60%. (Cue the facepalm.) So what's the fix? Erica's SNAP framework is a game-changer: ✅ Stop and take note – What is your body telling you? Sweaty palms? Racing heart? Pay attention. ✅ Name it – Call out the limiting belief. Imposter syndrome? Fear of failure? Own it. ✅ Ask and answer – Is this belief actually true? What's the worst-case scenario, and can you handle it? (Hint: You can.) ✅ Pivot – Reframe your thinking. Instead of “I have to do this,” try “I get to do this.” The best part? This framework isn't just for the boardroom. It applies to every aspect of life—career moves, relationships, big life transitions. Because as Erica says, new level, new devil. The fears don't disappear—you just get better at overcoming them. This is just the surface of our conversation on overcoming self-doubt, perfectionism, and other limiting beliefs that act as 'sticky floors,' preventing women from reaching their full potential. Enjoy a special reheat of three Flashback segments remembering events at PGA National! First, Andy shares some details about Bruce Lietzke, the 1984 Honda winner, who changed his entire schedule to spend more time with his family and had an affinity for a timely hot dog. Brendan then recaps Tim "Lumpy" Herron's win at the 1996 Honda Classic. Lumpy won the tournament as a rookie, but this segment also has plenty of nuggets about the eventful week Greg Norman had and his ongoing issues with the TPC Network. The second Flashback in this episode covers Camilo Villegas' 2010 Honda win, the cycling career of "Spider-Man," and some good karma for Graeme McDowell after calling a penalty on himself at PGA National that year. Finally, take a trip back to the 1987 PGA Championship at PGA National, where the competition almost literally melted away in the Florida heat.
