Today, I'm joined by Thomas Nhan Tri Nguyen who has a fascinating story that I wanted to learn more about. From music halls to the battlefield and now boardroom, Thomas (or Tom's) journey is anything but conventional. Tom is of Vietnamese heritage. He grew up in Adelaide, the only child of migrants who were fleeing war-torn Vietnam. While his early years were filled with music and academia, he started his working life as a public servant in the Queensland Government. A desire for a greater challenge led him down an unexpected path: the Australian Defence Force.Commissioned as an artillery officer in 2007, Tom served with distinction as a troop commander, navigating the complexities of field operations during a pivotal era in Australia's military engagements. But Tom wanted more and it was then he discovered the world of management consulting and reinvented himself once again. An MBA from INSEAD in France launched him into the global stage with McKinsey, where he worked across 15 countries before returning to Australia to establish his own strategic advisory practice.Tom's story is one of curiosity, courage, and constant reinvention—a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone. Today, he applies lessons learned from both the battlefield and the boardroom to help others navigate their own transformative journeys. Hello, welcome to the show! I'm your host Michelle Cox and it makes me so happy you're here with us once again to learn from another incredible guest that I'm about to introduce you to.This episode is part of a ‘series' we're currently running on the show - where I'm talking to all guests about the same topic, and that topic is REINVENTION! And why are we doing this? Well, it's a topic I get asked about a lot; how I reinvented myself, why, the process I went through, and I was keen to talk to others about their transitions and what they went through to create a new life for themselves. Today, I sit down with the wonderful Monique van Tulder who has been inspiring mid-life women to shake things up a bit and encouraging them to step into their ‘second-act' where, after decades of looking after others, they now get to spend time and resources on themselves.Authentically sharing her story of mid-life reinvigoration - her own Eat Pray Runaway & Return adventure (she abandoned her family for eight months) - Monique's wisdom inspires other women to prioritise health & well-being, financial literacy, retirement or professional life, and of course, travel retreats and adventure also! Monique leads an engaged online community of like-minded mid-age women who want to regain control of their lives. Her mantra: “Now, is your time” sounds like just the antidote for many of us living a life seemingly for others & not ourselves. Let's find out more from the wonderful Monique van Tulder. Her book ‘A Grown Ups Gap Year' - The Guidebook for mid Lifestyle. Wellbeing.Adventure. Valerie is the first guest in a ‘series' we're currently running on the show - where all guests will be asked to talk about the same topic, and that topic is REINVENTION! Why are we doing this? Well, it's a topic I get asked about a lot;  how I reinvented myself, why, the process I went through, and I was keen to talk to others about their transitions and what they went through to create new lives for themselves. A recap on today's guest; Valerie Khoo is an award-winning feature writer who is also CEO of the Australian Writers' Centre - an organisation she founded over 18 years ago. Val does many things - some of which include podcaster, incredible artist and author of seven books. Val & I often have such incredible conversations in our studio and it was fitting that she kicks off this series about Reinvention as she's had a fascinating journey that's led her to where she is today. There was so much GOLD in the chat with Val that we split it into two parts.  Let's dive in and hear more of the wisdom this incredible woman offers us. And don't forget - the One Question podcast now has a YouTube channel.  Please, go check it out here so we have more than 5 views!! :)One Question YoutubeFor more information about Valerie, check out these places;-Websites: Valerie Khoo and Australian Writers CentreInstagram: @valeriekhooLinkedin: Valerie KhooHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

Today I get the tables turned on me as we hit a wonderful milestone here on the One Question Podcast. I'm lucky enough to once again sit down with Helene Thomas, a Hobart based creative audio producer with a PhD in journalism. You may recall that I had Helene on the show a few months ago - you can have a listen to that interview it's #189 on the show - it's such a great conversation. But this time I connect with Helene for a different reason. You see Helene considers every story as a living spirit. This is why she takes her time and goes deep into the lives of others as they share their life worlds with her. She has been producing audio features and documentaries for 17 years and learned very quickly that telling people's stories carries a huge responsibility, so she decided to make this the topic of her PhD study. Through her research, she developed a practice that she calls Journalism of the Heart. It's where you slow down and take the time to get to know people so that it leads to deeper human connections and better stories. Helene's passion is crafting people's stories into intimate audio experiences and this is precisely why I felt she would be the perfect person to interview me for this very special 200th episode. It's a frank and honest interview- I was a little nervous before we started as I know Helene has a knack for bringing out stories we often keep under wraps. And as you're about to hear.. she certainly caught me off guard with a few of her questions. This is a conversation about life, love, and the love of life and it's ultimately a story about living a life more aligned with self and creative reinvention. I hope you enjoy it. For more information about Helene, check out these places;-Over the past year she has been engaged with a variety of storytelling projects with elders in the community and LGBTQIA+ folk (Pridefinder and working with academics on an Australian Research Council funded project).Website: https://www.thewayfinder.com.au/Instagram: @thewayfinderstorystudio/Linkedin: Helene ThomasHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?   “I wish people in society would speak more openly about their dreams and desires rather than allow society to dictate what they should be doing and how their career should look like.”_________________Throughout your life have you ever felt the need to do something just because someone else wants you to? Perhaps it's wearing something that makes you feel uncomfortable, or going to a party or an event you really don't want to.. but how would you feel if that was your career? Something you spend most of your waking hours doing, and it was a job you hated. You only really got into it because you felt the pressure of others convincing you that's what you needed to do with your life. There's a growing trend with professionals across many sectors - law, finance and medicine who are disillusioned with their career choice and feeling the pull toward doing something they love, vs what they feel everyone else wants them to do.My guest today works in this space every day and she's making a change in helping those who feel the pull to do more of what they love and move away from what others tell them to do. Marija Duka is a speaker and workshop facilitator who works specifically with lawyers helping them to uniquely design their careers. She is a commercial lawyer, with both in-house and private practice experience, having previously worked for renowned Australian brands. Marija is also the host of The Career Confidence Podcast, designed for those in the legal profession looking to step out of the traditional path and build fulfilling and purposeful careers. 7 Truths to Elevate Your Leadership from 200 Conversations

Making it Count Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2024 19:48

Can you believe we're already at the 201st episode of Leading You? It feels like just yesterday that I hit the record button for the very first time, and I'm so grateful for the support I get from each of you. This milestone has made me reflect on just how much we've uncovered about leadership—what it truly means to lead oneself and others effectively. Today I want to share the seven truths that have stuck with me the most from these past 200 episodes. Whether you're new to leadership or a seasoned pro, these insights will help elevate your leadership to new heights. The Power of the PauseYou've heard me talk about this endlessly, and for good reason. Pausing before reacting is a leadership superpower. It allows us to assess situations, make informed decisions, and communicate more clearly. This space for reflection helps avoid emotional responses, fostering a more thoughtful leadership style. One of our guests, Shivani Gupta, shared an excellent example when she stepped away from her business for six months to figure out her next move. This intentional pause allowed her to think about what truly fuels her purpose. Self-Care Fuels SuccessEffective leadership starts with looking after yourself. Prioritising your physical, mental, and emotional well-being is crucial for preventing burnout and sustaining long-term success. Leaders who model self-care not only maintain their health but also encourage a healthier work culture within their teams. It's easy to put self-care on a backburner while we focus on busyness, but it's important to remember that self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity for effective leadership. Vulnerability Strengthens Resilience and TrustVulnerability is no longer seen as a weakness but as a powerful leadership tool. Leaders who openly admit their mistakes and share personal challenges build deep trust with their teams. Through my own experiences and those shared by my guests, I've seen how being authentic and vulnerable fosters stronger connections and more collaborative environments. Empowered Choices Drive GrowthLeadership is about making conscious, empowered decisions. Whether it's navigating tough conversations or setting boundaries, intentional choices significantly shape how effectively a leader can grow and inspire their teams. It's about being proactive rather than reactionary. Making empowered choices sets the tone for growth and purpose, not only for you but for your team as well. Emotional Intelligence Builds Strong LeadersWhile high IQ can make you the smartest person in the room, it's emotional intelligence (EQ) that makes you an effective and influential leader. High EQ involves self-regulation, recognising how your emotions impact others, and understanding what motivates you. Leaders with high emotional intelligence inspire loyalty and cohesion within their teams, resolving conflicts more effectively. I've seen this in guests like Catherine Duncan and Adam Rouse, who demonstrate strong EQ in their leadership practices. Resilience Comes from Self-MasteryResilience is a great tool for any leader, because it helps you to stay composed under pressure, adapt to challenges, and maintain focus on long-term goals. Unfortunately, as Peter Baines shared when I spoke to him, you can't build resilience in your comfort zone. You need to face challenges head-on, learn from setbacks, and stay grounded in your purpose. It's about leading yourself through difficulties with the tools to overcome and grow from those experiences. Adaptability is EssentialAdaptability is one of the most important traits a leader can possess. Flexibility and openness to change allow leaders to respond proactively to new challenges. Carlo Pagano's episode on relevance underscores this perfectly. Leaders who embrace change and guide their teams through uncertainty thrive in dynamic environments, ensuring that they remain relevant and effective in leading both others and themselves.   These seven truths, gathered from hundreds of conversations and personal experiences, have been instrumental in shaping my leadership style and I hope they can do the same for you. Thank you for being an essential part of this incredible journey. Your support has been invaluable, and I look forward to continuing this adventure with you. Remember, leadership starts with you and the choices you make today will define the leader you become tomorrow. So, lead with intention, lead with heart, and keep growing. THE ‘WHY' BEHIND BUSINESS with Aaron SmithIf there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “I believe business is the number one way people can do good / impact positive change in society today. The one question I wish society would talk more about is the WHY behind why people start businesses. With Tall Poppy Syndrome rampant in this country, I feel the assumption is for profit, but I would say 9/10 times an entrepreneur has a stronger purpose behind their WHY, and profit is a secondary outcome.”_____________Founder of KX Pilates, Aaron Smith is an award-winning fitness innovator, entrepreneur and author of DEFINE YOURSELF: When Passion, Purpose and Business Collide. Based on the Japanese philosophy of kaizen (continuous improvement), KX Pilates is a dynamic workout that has transformed both fitness participants and the business at large. We are wrapping up our special list building series today. And I know I've been talking a lot about how list building provides every coach and course creator with more options. But it's also the thing that helps you move beyond relying on referrals to bring in private clients. Which is why today, we're going to craft a list building strategy with private client attraction in mind. My guest, Michelle Cox, teaches people the learnable skills to embrace their secret dream of writing a book so that they can go from feeling like an imposter with a silly book idea to being an author who did the hard work and wrote a damn good book. Michelle has a very clear vision about where she wants to take her business. That vision looks like:➡️8-10 private clients➡️1-2 VIP Days each month➡️1 small group and maybe a membership down the road. This vision is totally possible for Michelle and for you. But only if you make list building your top priority. Why? Because 1-3% of your list will end up becoming customers. So, if you can't find customers, it's probably a sign that list building has fallen to the wayside. Today, Michelle and I craft a simple plan of (boring) habits she can repeat, every week, in order to become more visible and build her list. None of it is complicated or fancy, but it is essential because if Michelle wants to work with 16 clients, she needs a list of 1600 subscribers. So, as you listen along, think about your client-getting goal. If your list building efforts don't match that number, then this episode is for you. The conversations I've had this season have included topics like Normalising Anxiety, Radical Responsibility, Insecurity, Sexuality & Disability, Overcoming trauma, and a few different angles of a growing topic of discussion on mental health and the stigma of medication in regards to mental health. Thank you to all the amazingly diverse and interesting people I've had the absolute privilege in sitting down with one to one this year - it's been incredible. It's these wide-ranging topics that help bridge gaps between people, they build understanding and empathy about the differences between us. I believe, the more understanding and tolerance we have for those that live & think very differently than us, the better lives we will all live. Now we're going to be talking about the four-book series of The Wanderer Chronicles, set in the dark ages of Europe in the seventh and eighth centuries, and I know that these sorts of sagas often have quite a strong element of archetypal fantasy in them as well. So I'm wondering. There's an obvious character in the book who identifies as a wanderer, but there's probably a more overarching archetype as well at play here. Talk to us a bit about how the Wanderer works in these kinds of Viking sagas. Theodore Brun: The Wanderer, it's interesting the name, the Wanderer, for a start, because I came up with that when I was about halfway through drafting the first book. and in searching around to see whether anything else had been made under that name, I discovered that there is actually a very old Anglo Saxon poem called The Wanderer. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“I want people to realise that in order to live a life that makes them happy, they need to take radical responsibility for it - no one else is going to save them!”_______I've been a bit excited about having this dynamo on the show! She's hilarious & I know we're gonna have some fun. If you follow her on Insta - she does these wonderful ‘explainer videos' and has me in hysterics. In Emily Chadbourne's eyes, she used to be a ‘bit of an idiot'. At 34 years old, she realised that no one was going to rescue her from her crappy waitressing job or her crappy life. She had to do it. Now, she shows other women how to consciously cultivate their businesses, relationships and inner strength, an evolution she calls becoming ‘unashamedly human'. Emily's no BS, sassy approach and honest accounts of the REAL world of love, life and business are often hilarious and always valuable. Originally from London, Em now lives in Melbourne where she works internationally as a mindset coach. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“How eradicating insecurity can lead to a life unhindered by doubt, fear, and self-limiting beliefs”_______I'm gonna be honest - I was a bit nervous about interviewing today's guest. I wasn't sure if he was the ‘right fit' for this show. I did my usual research in the weeks leading up to the interview - a healthy amount of stalking, reading some of his work, listening to his podcast. And whilst I thought his messages were great, I wasn't convinced on his delivery. I thought he seemed ‘too nice' to be that genuine. He's softly spoken. His words are deliberate. But what I found when we met & he peeled back the layers was a really fascinating human who's had a diverse and interesting life. I'm talking about Jaemin Frazer - a life coach and author. He's the founder of The Insecurity Project and specialises in helping entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners eradicate insecurity so they can show up to life unhindered by doubt, fear, and self-limiting beliefs. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“Grief and mother loss as it's not a topic we talk often or enough about.”_______Danielle was 23, when her mum, Rosa, died from cancer. This was an incredibly isolating and lonely experience, and although Danielle had family support around her, none could directly relate. After a fruitless search for support for other women who had experienced mother loss, Danielle and co-founder, Eloise, established Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) - a charity that connects and supports women and girls whose mums have died. Now, with a community of over 13,000 women, MDA provides support via an online support group, programs, events, resources, advocacy, awareness, and research. This conversation is deeply personal for me. One of the things I didn't get to share there, but I did in a later episode, is how these years challenged my actual habits of nourishing and maintaining my spirituality. That's why today I am looking forward to sharing a coaching call I did with a Progressor named Heather—a woman who is experiencing a change in her season, and a shift in her spiritual life that she wants to support with a new habit.  Let's talk about the #1 thing standing between you and all the clients you want.  It's your list.  Sometimes the answer to finding more clients is to build your list.   And that's the truth for my guest today.  Michelle Cox who has a very clear vision about where she wants to take her business.   That vision looks like:  —8-10 private clients —1-2 VIP Days each month —1 small group and maybe a membership down the road.  This vision is totally possible for Michelle and for you. But only if you make list building your top priority. Why? Because 1-3% of your list will end up becoming customers.  So, if you can't find customers, it's probably a sign that list building has fallen to the wayside.  Today, Michelle and I crafted a simple plan of (boring) habits she can repeat, every week, in order to become more visible and build her list.  None of it is complicated or fancy, but it is essential because if Michelle wants to work with 16 clients, she needs a list of 1600 subscribers.  So, as you listen along, think about your client-getting goal.
