Reggie Jackson graced the August 30, 1976 cover of Sports Illustrated during the single strangest season of his Hall of Fame career — his lone year as a Baltimore Oriole. Fifty years later, the cover still surprises people who forget he ever played for anyone besides Oakland, the Yankees, or California. Jackson wasn't winding down; he was a superstar in his prime when A's owner Charlie Finley cut his salary 20% while dismantling Oakland's three-peat championship roster, prompting Jackson to refuse to sign and Finley to trade him to Baltimore that April. Even then, Jackson held out for a bigger deal and didn't report for a month, finally signing a $200,000 contract for that one season before moving to the Bronx Zoo in 1977. A decade later, Jackson would wind down his career in Oakland — and the person who watched it happen up close, night after night, was Susan Fornoff. A University of Maryland journalism grad who cut her teeth at the Baltimore News-American and USA Today, Fornoff took over as the A's beat writer for the Sacramento Bee in 1985, becoming one of the pioneering women fighting for real locker room access rather than the token accommodations most teams offered at the time. That fight produced one of the sport's most infamous incidents of hostility toward women reporters. A's slugger Dave Kingman froze Fornoff out of the clubhouse and refused to speak to reporters in her presence after his 400th home run, before escalating in 1986 by sending her a live rat in a box with a tag on it that read, “ My name is Sue”— an act that drew a $3,500 fine from the club but little in the way of contrition from Kingman himself. Fornoff went on to co-found the Association for Women in Sports Media in 1987, and in 1993 turned her experiences into the memoir Lady in the Locker Room: Uncovering the Oakland Athletics, chronicling sexism both in the clubhouse and inside sports departments, with a cast of characters that included Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Tony La Russa, Dennis Eckersley, Dave Stewart — and Reggie Jackson himself. Now Fornoff joins Past Our Prime to bring that history full circle, centering the conversation on Jackson's final major league season in 1987 and offering a beat reporter's view of Mr. October as his career wound down. She talks candidly about the Kingman incident, recalling a gut sense that something was off with him in the days before it happened, and reflects on how, even four decades later, the moment still carries weight for her in ways she didn't expect. From there she widens the lens to where women in sports media stand today, contrasting the hostility she faced breaking in during the '80s with the far more accepted — if still imperfect — landscape now. The author of Lady in the Locker Room is now Lady on the Podcast: Susan Fornoff, on Past Our Prime. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Cardinals close out the preseason with a wild 42-38 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field. J.P. Shadrick and A.Q. Shipley discuss Arizona's offense racking up nearly 500 yards and the players on the roster bubble who did their best to make their case to stay on the roster. Running back Corey Kiner joins the show to talk about the Cardinals' zone-running scheme, his physical style of play, and the tough 48 hours ahead as the roster goes from 90 to 53. Head coach Mike LaFleur also joins the guys from the locker room to discuss Gardner Minshew's sharp start, Simi Fehoko's four-touchdown preseason, the players who made strong final impressions, and the difficult roster conversations ahead.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ken and Anthony unpack the wave of glowing Deshaun Watson coverage on Prime, from a "what's your why" sideline interview to Todd Monken's genuine excitement about the comeback story, and wonder if the overwhelmingly negative fan reaction is out of step with how the locker room actually feels about him. They also debate whether Mike Vrabel's visible frustration in the Patriots' preseason finale points to a Super Bowl hangover in New England, before circling back to whether Monken's optimism about Watson is real belief or just a coach talking himself into his only option.

Text and Be HeardFootball season is back, and so is the loudest lie in sports: that you can beat the book if you just “know ball.” We love the start of a new season, the routines, the locker room mindset, the hope. But we also see how quickly that excitement gets hijacked by sports betting apps, influencer promos, and a constant stream of prop bets that keep you clicking until your money is gone. We walk through why football betting is uniquely stacked against you. Vegas is tighter on football than almost anything, and modern sports data makes the odds even sharper. When you add player props, live betting, micro betting, and prediction markets, the “game” becomes a full-time chase where everything comes down to the last play and your nervous system never gets to rest. That is not entertainment for a lot of people. That is a carefully designed system that monetizes impulse and keeps you thinking you are one smart bet away. We also talk about the bigger impact: kids gambling from their phones, politicians treating addiction like a revenue stream, and a culture that celebrates big wins while hiding the taxes, the losses, and the shame. Our goal is simple: help you enjoy football without gambling, and build real confidence through daily recovery actions that boost natural dopamine and self-esteem. If this hits close to home, listen now, share it with someone who needs it, and subscribe so you do not miss what comes next. From the Locker Room to the Boardroom: Trent Dilfer on NIL, Institutional Failure, and the Peace That Held Him Together Key Topics: • The NIL earthquake — how a $471-a-month scholarship check gave way to a multi-million-dollar collision between money and college sports almost overnight • Why Trent believes the “quick-fix” entrepreneur mindset is a spiritual dead end, even when it pays • The coming clash between private equity and institutional leadership in college athletics • How Tim Tebow's boldness opened the door for a new generation of athletes to talk openly about faith • The hardest story Trent has ever told: losing his five-year-old son, and the peace that “transcends understanding” that carried his family through it Notable Quotes: “I think you could be spiritually bankrupt if you go chase the gold and forget about the soul.” — Trent Dilfer “I have a peace that transcends understanding. I am not my own.” — Trent Dilfer “Our God is a master of brokenness. He is the healer of the broken.” — Trent Dilfer Description: Trent Dilfer has seen the collision of money and college sports from every angle: as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who earned $471 a month on scholarship, as a head coach at UAB who watched NIL rewrite the rules six weeks into his first season, and as a broadcaster who now studies the institutions trying to keep up. On this episode of Faith Driven Entrepreneur, Trent joins host Justin Forman for a wide-ranging conversation about what happens when entrepreneurial disruption crashes into institutions that were never built to move fast — and why he believes chasing money without character is its own kind of bankruptcy. The conversation moves from the mechanics of NIL and the coming wave of private equity in college athletics, to the deeper story of how faith became a normal, bold part of the conversation in locker rooms — tracing a line from Tom Landry and Reggie White through the Tim Tebow era to today's young quarterbacks. Then Trent shares the hardest chapter of his own story: the loss of his five-year-old son, and the supernatural peace that met him in the middle of it. It's a raw, honest picture of what it looks like to trust God when nothing about the outcome makes sense — and why Trent says brokenness, not polish, is where most people actually meet Jesus.
