Showdown in Cedar Rapids: Cubs Ride Off Victorious It was a hot one in Cedar Rapids, and the South Bend Cubs came to town lookin’ to even some scores and rustle up a win. Young Ryan Gallagher took the mound like a seasoned gunslinger, evening his record at 4 wins and 4 losses. He threw six frames, gave up seven hits, four earned runs, and sat down six batters with his fastball straight as a rifle shot. The Cubs struck first blood in the top of the second, when Brian Kalmer roped a single to center to bring Andy Garriola gallopin’ home — 1–0 South Bend. In the fourth, Garriola got in on the action himself, sendin’ a base hit to right field that brought Jefferson Rojas and Cristian Hernandez across the plate. Cubs were up 3–0 and feelin’ mighty fine. But the Kernels weren’t about to fold that easy. They clawed their way back with two runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth, takin’ a 4–3 lead and makin’ folks nervous in the visitor dugout. Then came the 7th. Two outs, Garriola on first after a single and a sneaky stolen base — his fifth of the year. Cameron Sisneros stepped up to the plate, stared down Jacob Kisting, and after fallin’ behind 1–2, launched his first home run in the Midwest League into the Cedar Rapids twilight. That ball might still be travelin’. Cubs jumped ahead 5–4. The bottom of the 7th was a real saloon brawl. Kenton Egbert found himself in a mess of trouble, leadoff double, bases loaded — but he kept his cool. When Misael Urbina rolled one to short, Cristian Hernandez scooped it clean and ended the threat. No damage done. In the 9th, Brayden Risedorph rode in like the town marshal, shutting things down without so much as a scuff on his boots. That clean frame earned him his second save, and the Cubs rode off with a 5–4 win.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
South Bend Cubs Split Doubleheader in Cedar Rapids The South Bend Cubs played one and a half games Friday night, finishing a suspended contest from Thursday and following it with a shortened seven-inning Game 2. It was a night of big swings — both on the scoreboard and at the plate. ⚾ Game 1 – Cubs Let 5–0 Lead Slip Away South Bend entered the resumed game leading 5–0 in the bottom of the 3rd, but the game unraveled in the 5th. Danny De Andrade hit a grand slam (his 8th HR) off Chase Watkins, tying the game at 5. Watkins gave up 5 runs in the inning, and Luis Rujano allowed the go-ahead run later. Final: Cedar Rapids 6, South Bend 5

Schlaffer Wins the Bout as Cubs Outpunch Kernels 4–1 This afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium felt more like a title fight than a baseball game, as South Bend’s Tyler Schlaffer and Cedar Rapids’ Chase Cheney squared off in a heavyweight pitching duel. Schlaffer came out swinging—delivering haymakers from the mound with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings, allowing just one hit on 100 pitches. A true prizefight performance. Cheney went the distance for the Kernels, tossing 6 1/3 innings and giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs, but took the tough-luck loss. The Cubs broke the scoreless tie in the 7th when Ivan Brethowr landed a clean jab—a line-drive single to right—scoring Cameron Sisneros. Miguel Pabon advanced to third and then crossed home plate on a Brian Kalmer sac fly. In the 8th, South Bend kept landing punches. Jefferson Rojas scored on a Sisneros sacrifice fly, and Cristian Hernández stole third—his 28th bag of the year—then scored on a wild throw by catcher Luke Napleton. That made it 4–0 before the Kernels answered with a late-round run in the 9th. South Bend wins the bout by unanimous decision, 4–1. South Bend can't hold an early lead Sunday, falling to Lake County 10-5 at Four Winds Field.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Cubs Fall to Captains on Star Wars Night Despite Carter Trice’s Two-Homer Effort On a steamy Star Wars Night at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs fell to the Lake County Captains 10–5, despite two home runs from Carter Trice and an energetic crowd filled with Jedi robes, lightsabers, and stormtroopers. The Captains used speed, power, and a six-run 9th inning to pull away late. Ryan Gallagher, the Cubs’ 18th-ranked prospect, got the start but ran into turbulence in the 2nd inning. Lake County’s Jonah Advincula and Juan Benjamin each hit solo home runs to give the visitors an early 2–1 lead. Gallagher went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 6 before turning things over to the bullpen. Carter Trice provided an early spark for South Bend, blasting a solo homer (9) to left-center in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game 1–1. In the 7th, the Cubs threatened again with two outs. Andy Garriola and Ivan Brethowr singled, and Miguel Pabon beat out an infield hit to load the bases. The Captains turned to reliever Jack Jasiak, who struck out Brian Kalmer looking on a borderline pitch to end the rally and maintain the 3–1 lead. In the top of the 8th, Cubs reliever Luis Rujano recorded two quick outs, then issued three straight walks and hit Christian Knapczyk with two strikes to force in a run, making it 4–1. The Cubs responded in the bottom half. Trice and Jefferson Rojas singled, and Cristian Hernandez reached on a throwing error by third baseman Juan Benjamin, scoring Trice and trimming the lead to 4–2. But the Captains escaped again, striking out Garriola to end the inning. Then came the top of the 9th—a full-on Empire strike. Grayson Moore gave up a leadoff double to Jose Devers, followed by a two-run double from Johnny Tincher. Moore walked three batters before giving way to Burl Carraway, who uncorked a wild pitch that brought in another run. In all, Lake County scored six runs in the inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and taking a commanding 10–2 lead. South Bend mounted one last stand in the bottom of the 9th. Ivan Brethowr doubled, and Brian Kalmer followed with an RBI double. Then, with two outs, Trice crushed his second home run of the night (10)—a two-run blast to left-center, cutting the deficit to 10–5. But James Triantos struck out to end the game. Lake County finished with 12 hits and 9 stolen bases, compared to South Bend’s 9 hits and 1 stolen base. Final Score: Lake County Captains 10 South Bend Cubs 5 Next Game: The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field. First pitch at 2:05 p.m., pregame starts at 1:45 on Sports Radio WSBT. Cubs Celebrate Tiki Night with 4–2 Win Over Captains The South Bend Cubs brought the island vibes to Four Winds Field on Tiki Night and delivered a 4–2 victory over the Lake County Captains. First pitch was delayed slightly due to a brief rain shower, with the game getting underway around 7:30 p.m. Lake County struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning off Cubs starter Tyler Schlaffer, but South Bend quickly answered in the bottom half. Cameron Sisneros doubled sharply to right, scoring Jefferson Rojas to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Cubs erupted for three runs in the fifth. Rojas delivered again, roping an RBI double to left field to score Carter Trice and James Triantos, then advanced to third. Sisneros followed with an RBI single to right, bringing Rojas home and giving the Cubs a 4–2 lead. Despite some shaky defense—South Bend committed three errors, including two by Sisneros at first base—Schlaffer turned in a gem. The right-hander pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run, while striking out five and walking three. Chase Watkins tossed a clean eighth to earn a hold, and Grayson Moore locked down his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Sisneros made up for his defensive miscues at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, including a clutch two-out knock in the third. With the series squared at one, the Cubs and Captains will wrap up the first half at 7:05 PM on Thursday. Left-hander Evan Aschenbeck will get the ball for South Bend against Lake County southpaw Josh Hartle.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Cubs took Game 1 by a score of 3–1 and followed it with a dominant 4–0 victory in Game 2. In the opener, the Cubs plated a run on a bases-loaded balk in the 5th, then broke a 1–1 tie in the top of the 7th.
