Showdown in Cedar Rapids: Cubs Ride Off Victorious It was a hot one in Cedar Rapids, and the South Bend Cubs came to town lookin’ to even some scores and rustle up a win. Young Ryan Gallagher took the mound like a seasoned gunslinger, evening his record at 4 wins and 4 losses. He threw six frames, gave up seven hits, four earned runs, and sat down six batters with his fastball straight as a rifle shot. The Cubs struck first blood in the top of the second, when Brian Kalmer roped a single to center to bring Andy Garriola gallopin’ home — 1–0 South Bend. In the fourth, Garriola got in on the action himself, sendin’ a base hit to right field that brought Jefferson Rojas and Cristian Hernandez across the plate. Cubs were up 3–0 and feelin’ mighty fine. But the Kernels weren’t about to fold that easy. They clawed their way back with two runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth, takin’ a 4–3 lead and makin’ folks nervous in the visitor dugout. Then came the 7th. Two outs, Garriola on first after a single and a sneaky stolen base — his fifth of the year. Cameron Sisneros stepped up to the plate, stared down Jacob Kisting, and after fallin’ behind 1–2, launched his first home run in the Midwest League into the Cedar Rapids twilight. That ball might still be travelin’. Cubs jumped ahead 5–4. The bottom of the 7th was a real saloon brawl. Kenton Egbert found himself in a mess of trouble, leadoff double, bases loaded — but he kept his cool. When Misael Urbina rolled one to short, Cristian Hernandez scooped it clean and ended the threat. No damage done. In the 9th, Brayden Risedorph rode in like the town marshal, shutting things down without so much as a scuff on his boots. That clean frame earned him his second save, and the Cubs rode off with a 5–4 win.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Bend Cubs Split Doubleheader in Cedar Rapids The South Bend Cubs played one and a half games Friday night, finishing a suspended contest from Thursday and following it with a shortened seven-inning Game 2. It was a night of big swings — both on the scoreboard and at the plate. ⚾ Game 1 – Cubs Let 5–0 Lead Slip Away South Bend entered the resumed game leading 5–0 in the bottom of the 3rd, but the game unraveled in the 5th. Danny De Andrade hit a grand slam (his 8th HR) off Chase Watkins, tying the game at 5. Watkins gave up 5 runs in the inning, and Luis Rujano allowed the go-ahead run later. Final: Cedar Rapids 6, South Bend 5
Andy Garriola and Brian Kalmer each collected two hits, with Kalmer launching his first home run of the season. Schlaffer Wins the Bout as Cubs Outpunch Kernels 4–1 This afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium felt more like a title fight than a baseball game, as South Bend’s Tyler Schlaffer and Cedar Rapids’ Chase Cheney squared off in a heavyweight pitching duel. Schlaffer came out swinging—delivering haymakers from the mound with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings, allowing just one hit on 100 pitches. A true prizefight performance. Cheney went the distance for the Kernels, tossing 6 1/3 innings and giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs, but took the tough-luck loss. The Cubs broke the scoreless tie in the 7th when Ivan Brethowr landed a clean jab—a line-drive single to right—scoring Cameron Sisneros. Miguel Pabon advanced to third and then crossed home plate on a Brian Kalmer sac fly. In the 8th, South Bend kept landing punches. Jefferson Rojas scored on a Sisneros sacrifice fly, and Cristian Hernández stole third—his 28th bag of the year—then scored on a wild throw by catcher Luke Napleton. That made it 4–0 before the Kernels answered with a late-round run in the 9th. South Bend wins the bout by unanimous decision, 4–1. The South Bend Cubs fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 8–3 on Saturday. Despite an aggressive on the basepaths with four stolen bases, the Cubs managed just six hits and left nine runners stranded—most of them in the early innings—missing key opportunities to shift momentum. Ryan Gallagher got the start for South Bend and went 2.2 innings before giving way to Connor Schultz, who initially stopped the bleeding by recording the final out of the third. However, Schultz ran into serious trouble in the fourth and fifth innings, surrendering five runs on five hits while issuing three walks. Final Score: Cedar Rapids Kernels 9, South Bend Cubs 1 The South Bend Cubs dropped the series finale to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, closing out a difficult road trip with a 9–1 loss. The defeat drops the Cubs to 1–13 on the road this season and gives the Kernels five wins in the six-game set. South Bend struck first with a Carter Trice RBI single in the top of the first. Trice also stood out defensively, making key plays in center field during the third and fourth innings to momentarily keep the game close. Trice and Reginald Preciado each recorded two hits in the game. Starter Kenten Egbert gave up back-to-back singles before being pulled for Joe Nahas in the fifth. That inning unraveled quickly, as the Kernels sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs on four singles to take control. Cedar Rapids later added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, finishing with 11 hits to South Bend’s 9. Reliever Luis Rujano provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 innings and striking out three. The Cubs had a chance to rally in the eighth with the bases loaded but couldn’t push across another run. South Bend returns home to Four Winds Field next week for a six-game homestand against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, hoping to reverse their road struggles and get back on trackSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cedar Rapids Kernels Take Game One Over South Bend Cubs, 10–4 CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — The South Bend Cubs couldn’t overcome early and late surges from the Cedar Rapids Kernels, falling 10–4 in the series opener Tuesday night. Cedar Rapids jumped on Cubs starter Tyler Schlaffer right away, plating four runs in the first inning. Schlaffer lasted just one frame before giving way to Conner Schultz, who provided 3.1 innings of steady relief, allowing only one run. Carlo Reyes followed and tossed two scoreless innings to keep South Bend within striking distance. The Cubs fought back in the fourth, erupting for four runs to tie the game. Jefferson Rojas launched his first home run of the season — a two-run shot — and Reginald Preciado added a two-RBI single to center, scoring Andy Garriola and Reivaj Garcia. South Bend added pressure on the bases with two double steals in the inning and finished the game with six stolen bases. However, the momentum shifted again in the bottom of the seventh. Evan Taylor made his South Bend debut and struggled, issuing a leadoff walk before surrendering a two-run homer to Gabriel Gonzalez. Taylor allowed five runs in the frame as the Kernels pulled away for good. Despite strong offensive efforts, including Preciado’s first three-hit game of the year, the Cubs were stifled by Cedar Rapids’ defense, which turned four double plays to squash potential rallies. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for September 21, 2023.According to the National Weather Service there will again be a slight chance of rain all day on Thursday. Besides that it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 78 degrees. As one the fastest growing metro regions in the Midwest, and second only in the state to Des Moines, Iowa City officials are looking for ways to lessen traffic congestion, provide alternative transportation options and improve commute times. But which transit style makes the most sense?Iowa City Council members voted 6-0 Tuesday to hire a consulting firm to explore the feasibility of adapting the existing Cedar Rapids & Iowa City Railway corridor right of way between Iowa City and North Liberty to accommodate a bus rapid transit system.Bus rapid transit is a high-capacity system designed to deliver fast and efficient service that may include dedicated bus lanes, busways, traffic signal priority, off-board fare collection, elevated platforms and new stations, according to the Federal Transit Administration. The transit system has advanced throughout the county in the last decade as congestion has increased and community leaders have sought affordable transit alternatives, according to the agency. Such systems operate in big cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta, and are growing in popularity in the Midwest including Cleveland, Omaha and Kansas City.Because it contains features similar to a light rail or subway system, bus rapid transit often is considered more reliable, convenient and faster than regular bus service, according to federal transit officials. And with the right features, it can avoid the delays that can slow regular buses, like being stuck in traffic and queuing to pay fares on board. The warden of the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility resigned earlier this month, just six months after starting the job.“Kris Karberg resigned from his position as warden of the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility effective September 1, 2023,” Department of Corrections Spokesman Nick Crawford said in an email. “Deputy Warden Don Harris became acting warden effective the same day.”Karberg had been warden at Fort Dodge since Feb. 17, when the Corrections Department transferred him from Anamosa State Penitentiary, where he had been warden since 2021.The Gazette reached out to Karberg, who declined to comment extensively on why he'd left the Iowa Corrections Department. He said he was likely moving back to South Dakota, where he'd lived before taking the Anamosa job.Karberg was deputy warden at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, S.D., for three years before moving to Iowa. Earlier in his career, he spent 10 years providing private security in Southwest Asia, Belize and Afghanistan where he was a contractor for the U.S. State Department, he told the Iowa Board of Corrections in 2021.On Wednesday night, Emmanuel Rodriguez hit a second-inning grand slam, the Cedar Rapids Kernels built an early 5-0 lead and went on to beat Great Lakes, 7-6, in the winner-take-all Game 3 of the Midwest League Championship Series in front of a boisterous crowd of just over 2,000 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Players sprayed each other with bottles of sparkling cider on the field during a massive celebration that began with a victory dogpile around the pitcher's mound when Rodriguez secured the final out with a catch of a fly ball. He signed the bill Thursday in Carson City a day after the Democrat-controlled legislature approved the plans. Hours earlier, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred outlined a months-long approval process for the A’s proposed move there. The $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL’s Vegas Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup this week in just their sixth season. MLB – MLB to start months-long approval process for Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas Major League Baseball laid out a detailed process to approve the Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas, which appears set to become the second shift of a franchise in the last half-century. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says: “I feel sorry for the fans in Oakland. I do not like this outcome." Schauffele was two groups behind him and played bogey-free. They settled for their place in the record book. The Nuggets sharing hugs while passing around the NBA championship trophy. Scenes that for decades seemed impossible finally turned into reality for the Nuggets. Denver outlasted the Miami Heat 94-89 in an ugly, frantic Game 5 that did nothing to derail Nikola Jokic, who bailed out his teammates with 28 points and 16 rebounds on a night when nothing else seemed to work. The win gave the Nuggets their first title in 47 years in the league. Jokic was named MVP and is the first player to lead everyone in points, rebounds and assists in a single playoffs. NBA – Denver’s Nikola Jokic adds missing piece to impressive resume with NBA title The Denver Nuggets’ first NBA championship cements Serbian center Nikola Jokic as one of the game’s preeminent player. The Nuggets’ superstar was denied a third consecutive MVP this season. But he was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player after dominating the series with Miami just as he did earlier rounds when the Nuggets knocked off Minnesota, Phoenix and the LA Lakers. Jokic finally fully celebrated his impressive run through the playoffs once the Nuggets had secured the first NBA championship in franchise history. NBA – Analysis: Nuggets built a championship team the right way, and built it to last This may be just the start for the Denver Nuggets. They are the newly crowned NBA champions after beating the Miami Heat on Monday night and winning the finals in five games. They have five starters that are all age 30 or under. They have a superstar in Nikola Jokic leading the way and an elite second option in Jamal Murray. They have a roster filled with players who have bought in to be something bigger than themselves. The Nuggets were built the right way and built to last. That’s why they should be in the championship mix next year as well. Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Washington Mystics at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. Golf – Senator asks LIV Golf, PGA Tour leaders for records on merger The leader of a Senate subcommittee wants the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf to present records about negotiations that led to their new agreement and plans for what golf will look like under the arrangement. Sen. Last week, LIV and the tour stunned the golf world by agreeing to merge the PGA Tour and European tour with the Saudi golf interests, while dropping all lawsuits between the parties. NHL – 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Finals – (best of seven) Tonight Game 5 Florida Panthers at Vegas Golden Knights, 8:00 p.m. (VGK leads 3-1) NHL – Original Golden Knights hope to fulfill owner’s wish of Stanley Cup by 6th year Golden Knights owner Bill Foley was aggressive from the beginning. He said he wanted to win the Stanley Cup in six years. Vegas nearly won it the first year. The Knights made the Stanley Cup Final before losing in five games to the Washington Capitals. High expectations came from the top and came early for the six players who remain from that team. The Knights take a 3-1 series lead into Tuesday’s Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. This is Vegas’ sixth season. NHL – Accustomed to playing with injuries, Panthers prepare for Game 5 The Florida Panthers took the ice for Monday’s practice without several key players, most notably Matthew Tkachuk. The Panthers also were seemingly without any concern as they prepare for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights, down 3-1 in the series. The common theme in the Panthers’ locker room after practice was referring to their 3-1 series comeback in the opening round against the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Boston Bruins. This time, however, it’ll take a lot more than hockey’s so-called “puck luck” in what’s been a hard-hitting, physically challenging, brawl-filled series. Tennis – Novak Djokovic has 23 Slams, so is he the GOAT? He leaves that debate to others Novak Djokovic’s 23 Grand Slam titles put him atop the list for the most in history by a man. He broke a tie with rival Rafael Nadal and is now three ahead of the retired Roger Federer. Djokovic got his 23rd by beating Casper Ruud in the French Open final on Sunday. Djokovic was then asked how it feels to be the greatest male tennis player in history. He did not give a direct answer. But the numbers sure back his case. Most Grand Slam titles. Most weeks at No. 1. The only man to win every Masters 1000 event twice. And so on. He now heads to Wimbledon halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam. Soccer – Mbappe informs PSG he will not trigger contract extension, AP source says Kylian Mbappe has told Paris Saint-Germain he won’t take up the option of a 1 yea extension on his contract. And that has pitted Nevada’s powerful tourism industry and labor unions against some progressive groups, raising concerns about ceding tax revenue when services such as public schools are funded below the national average. Proponents say the proposal could create new jobs, increase the state’s general revenue and further diversify the city’s casino and gaming-based economy. But skeptics warn of empty promises, citing growing evidence that minimal dollars generated from the new stadium would not otherwise be spent among nearby resorts and restaurants. NASCAR – Kyle Busch holds off Denny Hamlin for NASCAR Cup Series win outside St. Louis Kyle Busch held off Denny Hamlin through a series of late restarts to win the chaotic, caution-filled NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway just outside of St. Louis in overtime Sunday. Bubba Wallace brought out the 11th and final yellow when his brake rotor let go with five laps remaining. Busch won a green-white-checkered shootout to the finish. There also were two red flags to go with a two-hour weather delay that caused the mid-afternoon race to finish in the twilight. Hamlin finished second while Joey Logano, the winner a year ago in the Cup Series debut at the track, got around Kyle Larson on the final lap to finish third. Soccer – Racist abuse of Vinícius Júnior highlights entrenched problem in soccer The vicious, relentless and high-profile racist insults directed at Brazilian soccer player Vinícius Júnior underscore an entrenched and decades-old issue that refuses to go away in the world’s most popular sport. It is a deeper societal problem that is manifested in soccer matches predominantly in Europe, but also all around the world, and has been amplified by the reach of social media. Federations have been slow and, in some cases unwilling, to use powers to sanction teams for the racist behavior of their fans. Players past and present worry racism is just an accepted part of soccer. Experts say more education and stronger punishments are required to combat racism.
