We talk with screenwriter Daniel Waters about his debut film HEATHERS, one of the last films released in theaters by New World Pictures! Our hilarious and wide-ranging discussion goes from Daniel's beginnings working on the South Bend sketch comedy show Beyond Our Control, to his move to Hollywood, where he watched many New World movies (especially his favorite, JAKE SPEED) and worked in a video store while writing HEATHERS. We dive into Daniel incredible career and especially HEATHERS - how it got started, Daniel's initial discussion with director Michael Lehmann, how strip crochet actually works, the various possible endings, and New World's botched release, which was only saved by a questionable VHS cover that helped spark a following, and much more - as well as stories about THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, HUDSON HAWK, and more!  But will Daniel forgive Marc for trashing BATMAN RETURNS? Listen to find out!

“Never rob a man of his pain or his gold because both will serve him equally well.”Super Bowl champion Aaron Taylor reflects on a journey to emotional freedom that continues far beyond his accomplished career in the NFL. For every feeling he'd been pushing away, Aaron came to find that “on the other side is infinite possibility.”Join Aaron, Brett, and Joe as they talk about performance anxiety, feelings in the locker room, and how faith affects decision-making. They touch on the nature of accomplishment, how to raise children who hear their own voices of approval, and the value of having our identity shattered to pieces. Aaron shares a tearful moment with his absent father that produced an unexpected gem of gratitude. The episode closes with the story of a critical choice Aaron made at age 15 that changed his life.“At the end of the day it doesn't matter what we do, it's about who and what we become in that process.”Links and references from the episode:Mentalhealthbestpractices.comCheck back in 16 years for a follow-up interview with feedback from Aaron on the referenced conversation with his son.About Aaron:CBS Sports Analyst and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Aaron Taylor, has a "larger than life" personality, but its roots may surprise you: the former Super Bowl Champion credits his success to the principles of Gratitude, Service, and Teamwork.Instilled from an early age, these principles became the inspiring foundation for the creation of college football's only non-individual award, the Joe Moore Award, annually recognizing the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in College Football. Through the Joe Moore Award, Aaron set out to not only preserve the legacy of his coach but also to shift the focus from a “Hey, look at me!” mentality to a culture of teamwork, of putting the greater good above ourselves in society at large.Aaron was a decorated offensive lineman at the University of Notre Dame from 1990-1993, earning unanimous All-American honors both his junior and senior years. In his final season in South Bend, he won the prestigious Lombardi Award, annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. In an incredible culmination of his childhood dream, Aaron was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft and was a member of the Packers' Super Bowl XXXI championship team. After a two-year stint with the San Diego Chargers, Aaron was forced to retire due to injuries after the 1999 season.Off the field, Aaron is a moving and inspirational speaker. His candid approach and sense of humor make him an effective storyteller who is able to weave a powerful message of resilience, perseverance, and the importance of having a championship mindset. Behind the winning smile and accolades, Aaron finds meaning and feels “most alive” when being of service or bringing value to others. Shortly after retiring from the NFL, Aaron established the Aaron Taylor Impact Fund and recently co-founded The Foundation for Teamwork, dedicated to fostering the most essential aspect of all societal endeavors: Teamwork.Aaron currently resides in Southern California and New York with his wife and three children.

In the mid-20th century, neighborhoods on Lafayette's northside looked a lot like neighborhoods communities are trying to build now. In places like McComb, Veazey and Fightinville, families could live, work and play on their blocks.  The communities were stitched together by schools, churches — and businesses. Entrepreneurship was a big part of the fabric of the community: the family grocery store or barber shop. A restaurant or even a zydeco club.  Fast forward to the 21st century and many of those businesses have vanished. And opportunity left with them.  But the spirit of entrepreneurship is still very much alive. And organizations like the Lafayette Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center at UL see an opportunity to revive Lafayette's Northside with that spirit.  Kevin Guillory grew up on the Northside — of Lake Charles that is. And that community tells a similar story. Growth and prosperity moved southward in Lake Charles, leaving older neighborhoods behind.  Kevin got his MBA from UL and moved to Texas, thinking he'd never look back. But look back he did. He landed at UL in 2014 as an admissions counselor and works today as the LEED Center's Office Coordinator.  Kevin's behind the scenes work is essential to the success of the LEED Center's Accelerate Northside program, which offers workshops and training for entrepreneurs. That program kicked off in 2021 and has kept growing ever since.  Accelerate Northside was modeled after a successful program offered by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. And one of the guys responsible for importing the idea was Kevin's colleague, Jonathan Shirley. Jonathan grew up in Abbeville and has long family ties to economic development. His mom used to run the Chamber of Commerce and his dad was an extension agent with Wildlife and Fisheries. Jonathan has been the LEED Center's Program Manager since 2020.  In that role, Jonathan has overseen the launch of Accelerate Northside and its “head and heart philosophy.” The idea is they don't just teach you how, but try to understand the why of your business.  Even if you have a great idea for a business and the drive to give it everything you've got, if you don't come from a business background or grow up around entrepreneurs it can be tough to know essential business basics, and especially how to avoid making mistakes you don't need to make. You can check out graduates from Accelerate Northside on previous episodes of Out to Lunch - especially The Williamses and Creole Nutcracker - and see for yourself the significant difference Kevin and Jonathan's program is making. You can see photos from this show and a whole lot more at itsacadiana.com. Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On June 29, 1922, several hundred people attended a special, two-hour evening opening of the new Engman Public Natatorium. By September, South Bend's Parks Board estimated almost 10,000 people took advantage of the brand-new facility. It is unclear exactly when the white people in charge of the Natatorium first denied entry to African American people—but they did. And as a taxpayer funded, supposedly “public” facility, it became a focus of local civil rights action by a group of doctors, lawyer, politicians, and other Black professionals pushing against an entrenched system of discrimination. By 1978, the Natatorium was over fifty years old, and it was falling apart. Officials started asking whether it was time to shut it down. Paul McMinn was just out of college then. Bob Goodrich offered him a job to run the Natatorium. Neither of them knew it would be the Nat's last open season. In 2018, I sat down with Paul and Bob, and also Bob Heiderman who taught classes at the Natatorium and other pools in South Bend. As we're now over a century since the Natatorium first opened, I thought it was fitting to hear Paul and the two Bob's talk about the last days of the Engman Public Natatorium. This episode was produced by Donald Brittain from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and by George Garner from the Civil Rights Heritage Center. Myself and most of the people listening to this podcast are well aware of what it's like to buy film cameras and photography gear, but less of us know what it's like to sell it.  On this, the 30th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, the gang and I bring on some current and former employees of various camera stores to give us some insight into what it's like on the other side of the counter. From Gene's Camera in South Bend, Indiana, we have owner Jack St. Pierre and regular guest Jon Gilchrist.  From Alpine Camera in Des Plaines, Illinois, owner Chuck Miller.  From South Florida, former camera store employee of Gold Triangle Department Store is Stephen Grasso, and finally, our own host and former camera store employee and owner, Paul Rybolt share with us stories of how things used to be, and also discuss some of the biggest changes they saw in the industry during their time. Joining our camera store crew are returning callers, Hong Lee, Mark Faulkner, Andrew Smith, Jess Ibarra, and Michael Gossett, and first time callers Andrew Almendarez and Steven Lederman who bring up other interesting topics like whether buying cameras make for good investments, whether lens fungus is contagious, and where the origins are of Kodak film. In addition to all of these exciting discussions, we witnessed the first ever "IN SHOW" purchase where Stephen Grasso buys something from Paul's eBay store!  Make sure you listen in and find out what camera it is! As always the topics and discussions on the Camerosity Podcast are entirely up to you.  While we make an attempt to have a general idea on how to get a show started, the topics almost always veer off into wild and unexpected directions.  If you'd like to ask us a question or wish to hear us discuss your favorite brand of camera or film, consider joining us on our next episode and steer us in that direction! For the first time since the hire was made official, new Florida State Seminoles baseball head coach Link Jarrett addressed the media and FSU fanbase, talking his history with the program, his vision for Seminoles baseball, facilities, recruiting, and more. Jarrett returned to his hometown of Tallahassee to become the program's 10th ever head coach. hired away from Notre Dame after compiling a 86-32 record and leading the Fighting Irish to a College World Series berth in 2022. “I think that Link is the finest coach in the game today, and that opinion is held by many in college baseball. We could not be more pleased that he will be leading our program,” said FSU athletic director Michael Alford last week in a press release announcing Jarrett's hire. “He has been a proven winner at each of his coaching stops. “His teams have not only posted historically successful seasons, but they have also mirrored Link's tradition of running a first-class program. He is well-known for his record of developing players everywhere he has coached. “He's a Seminole through and through and there is no question that he will dedicate himself to the success of our student-athletes and his team. I know he is excited to be returning home and we are just as excited to welcome him and his family.” Speaking on Monday, Jarrett said that ultimately, outside of family connections, his desire to be in Tallahassee came down to one thing — winning a national championship. “After I left, I do recognize what has gone here for decades. I have to create a trajectory with the program to modernize what we're doing. We have to improve the organization. We have to become complete in all phases of what we're trying to do with the program. There's one thing I haven't done, and that's win a national championship, and that's why I'm here.” “It's not easy, I know this is difficult. Walking off that field [in Omaha] a week ago was challenging, emotional. I actually walked off that field three times as a player, and I'm going to walk off that field, at some point, with the trophy.” “A lot of people say that, I would think every coach stands at the podium and probably says the same thing, but I've been very close — and my experience in the game, playing and now coaching, has positioned me to be in a program where I feel like we have that opportunity annually to position ourselves to host a regional, host a super-regional, find ourselves in Omaha and cultivate a time that has a chance out there to win it.” Jarrett took the time to thank his family, appreciating them for the coaching journey they've been on — eight different locations. It's a huge reason why he ultimately ended up in Tallahassee, so that they could finally settle down. He also took a few minutes to address the elephant in the room — his relationship with the Martin family. Jarrett, who this year earned a Mike Martin Coach of the Year trophy, said that he was, and is, eternally grateful for the support and platform that the family has given him. “There was a competitive side to 11 that was as elite as I've ever seen. He put us in a position to win...to be in a spot to execute a win. And clearly, he won more than anybody. And his treatment of the people around the program always stood out to me.” “Meat was a former teammate of mine — a former roommate of mine, an outstanding baseball mind. We had some of the deepest baseball conversations I can ever remember, at our house that was just up the road. He's a close friend of mine, and will remain a very close friend as I embark on my challenge here.” Jarrett also addressed FSU's facilities briefly, saying that FSU can “keep up our shop a bit” and improve some things infrastructure-wise, something that has absolutely been top of mind for the new Seminoles' skipper, who talked about sharing a facility with multiple other programs in South Bend and how it helped shape his approach to getting the most out of his team.
