Today on the BWI Live Recruiting Show, we'll discuss the top prospects that have made or will make their college decisions in the coming days. Reporter Ryan Snyder sits down for an hour to relate the current situation to Penn State fans on today's show. We'll also recap the prospect camp from Wednesday and preview the weekend of camps starting on Friday. Join the show live at 10 a.m. on YouTube to discuss the latest Penn State Football recruiting news and ask your questions of the show! More to come? The bad news for the top of Penn State's 2026 prospects started Wednesday when four-star tackle Greyson McKeogh chose Notre Dame over Penn State and Texas. Shortly after, industry experts put in picks for top defensive back targets Khary Adams and Joey O'Brien to join him in South Bend. After that, reports from On3 surfaced that USC and Ohio State were in a bidding war for top defensive end Luke Wafle, who was about to command a seven-figure NIL package. Where does that leave Penn State? Snyder will do his best to give fans the intel on why things are trending away from the Nittany Lions with in-state and regional targets. We'll also discuss who is left on the board and what the program can do to make up ground. Penn State finishing June with three camps in five days Penn State hosted a smaller mid-week camp on Wednesday that BWI attended. Several top commits and prospects were also in attendance. We'll discuss what we saw from defensive line commit Isaac Chukwurah, and 2027 target Abraham Sessay. Defensive back commits Julian Peterson and Matt Sieg also attended camp, which was our first time to see them work up close. We'll discuss how they performed. Previewing Visits and Camps to close JuneFinally, we'll preview the end of the 2025 June calendar. A recruiting dead period starts next week, lasting until the start of the 2025 season. It's the final chance to get prospects on campus for official visits and to have top targets visit the program. We'll discuss the upcoming players making their way to campus for a final round of official visits, and then those players will be invited to the Lasch Bash and White Out Camp on Sunday. Join the show live at 10 a.m. on YouTube! #PennState  #NittanyLions  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters:  https://bluewhiteonline.com Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3

Red-Hot South Bend Cubs Sweep Doubleheader, Extend Win Streak to Six The South Bend Cubs stayed scorching hot on Saturday, sweeping a road doubleheader against the Fort Wayne TinCaps with gritty, clutch performances to stretch their winning streak to six games—and five straight at Parkview Field this series. The Cubs took Game 1 by a score of 3–1 and followed it with a dominant 4–0 victory in Game 2. In the opener, the Cubs plated a run on a bases-loaded balk in the 5th, then broke a 1–1 tie in the top of the 7th. Carter Trice delivered a soft but perfectly placed fly ball single to center field, scoring Reginald Preciado and Drew Bowser. Starter Ryan Gallagher shined again, tossing 5.2 sharp innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight—his third consecutive strong outing. Joe Nahas slammed the door with a lockdown relief appearance. Game 2 belonged to South Bend’s starter, who pitched a brilliant, complete game shutout, scattering just four hits and fanning five. The offense ignited in the 3rd inning as Andy Garriola ripped a bases-clearing double. Brian Kalmer added an RBI double in the 4th to cap the scoring. The Cubs look to finish the series sweep Sunday afternoon. Pregame at 12:45, first pitch at 1:05 p.m. on Sports Radio WSBT.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The second in a series of conversations about the poet Alice Notley, who passed away on May 19, 2025. The poet and critic Joyelle McSweeney joins the podcast to talk about selections from Notley's epic The Descent of Alette. (A brief note on audio quality: we listen to three recordings of Notley reading from her book during this episode. The volume on playback of those recordings seems somewhat low to me—sorry!—but hopefully listeners will be able to adjust the volume on their devices so as to hear Notley well enough.)Guggenheim Fellow Joyelle McSweeney is the author of ten books of poetry, drama and prose, a well-known critic, and a vital publisher of international literature in translation. McSweeney's latest book, Death Styles, appeared from Nightboat Books in Spring 2024; her previous title, Toxicon and Arachne (2020), was called "frightening and brilliant" by Dan Chiasson in the New Yorker and earned her the Shelley Memorial Prize from the Poetry Society of America. Her 2014 essay collection, The Necropastoral: Poetry, Media, Occults, is widely regarded as a visionary work of eco-criticism. Her debut poetry volume, The Red Bird, inaugurated the Fence Modern Poets Series in 2001. With Johannes Göransson, she co-edits the international press Action Books, which has built readerships for a diverse array of US and international authors from Griffin Prize winners Kim Hyesoon and Don Mee Choi to Daniel Borzutzky and Raúl Zurita. She lives in South Bend, Indiana and teaches at the University of Notre Dame. You can see Alice Notley read the entirety of The Descent of Alette in a series of recordings made over two nights at The Poetry Center at SFSU. Cubs Rally in 9th to Win 11–9 in Thriller over TinCaps In the top of the 9th, trailing by one, Carter Trice launched a two-run homer—his 7th of the season—to give the South Bend Cubs a 10–9 lead over the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Felix Stevens, on a rehab assignment, followed with a solo blast to center, capping a thrilling three-run rally and securing an 11–9 Cubs victory—their second straight 11-run performance. South Bend out-hit Fort Wayne 14–12 in the back-and-forth slugfest. Catcher Ariel Armas had a standout game, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs, and a stolen base. Edward Alvarez added three hits and two RBIs, while Stevens chipped in with two hits of his own. The Cubs offense struck in bunches, scoring four in the 3rd, and one run each in the 4th and 5th. They plated two more in the 6th before their ninth-inning heroics. Despite giving up nine runs in the first five innings, South Bend’s bullpen dominated late. Chase Watkins threw 2.1 scoreless innings, and Johzan Oquendo closed the door with five strikeouts in two hitless innings to earn the win. An electric, comeback-filled win in this battle of Indiana’s minor league rivals. Next Game: Wednesday at 6:45 PM on Sports Radio WSBT.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The South Bend Cubs played what amounted to one and a half games on Saturday against the Great Lakes Loons, in a day shaped by both weather delays and Minor League Baseball’s unique doubleheader rules. The day began with the completion of a suspended game from Friday night, which resumed in the top of the 5th inning with the Cubs trailing 2–1. After finishing that contest, the two teams played a scheduled 7-inning game, as per MiLB’s standard doubleheader format. Unfortunately for South Bend, both games ended with the same disappointing result: 2–1 losses. With the double defeat, the Cubs now trail the series 3–2 heading into Sunday afternoon’s finale at Four Winds Field. In Game 1, the Cubs’ only run came on Friday evening, before the suspension, when Carter Trice launched a solo home run to left field. That blast tied the game 1–1 at the time, but the Loons regained the lead before play was halted. When the game resumed on Saturday, both teams were held scoreless over the final four and a half innings. South Bend’s best opportunity came in the bottom of the ninth, when they loaded the bases with a chance to walk it off. However, Ariel Armas grounded out to end the game, stranding all three runners and sealing the narrow 2–1 loss. Game 2 featured an impressive start from right-hander Ryan Gallagher, who continued to show poise on the mound. He pitched five strong innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven Loons batters. The runs came in the second and third innings, and despite a solid outing, Gallagher was tagged with the tough-luck loss. South Bend had a few scoring chances, including the bottom of the sixth, when Carter Trice doubled to lead off the inning, but he was ultimately stranded at third. The Cubs finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Brian Kalmer singled home Ivan Brethowr, cutting the deficit to one run. However, with the tying run at first base, Drew Bowser grounded out to end the game and extinguish the late rally. While both losses were close and hard-fought, the Cubs will look to bounce back in Sunday’s series finale, hoping to earn a split and avoid losing four out of six at home. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM at Four Winds Field, where South Bend will aim to reverse the momentum and close out the homestand on a high note.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the small, midwestern city of South Bend, Indiana, for members of the LGBTQ+ community, having a space for themselves is life changing. And for twenty years, people here have had that space.  Today, it's called the LGBTQ Center. As the Center approached its twentieth anniversary, Dr. Jamie Wagman and students from Saint Mary's College students preserved the history of the Center by conducting oral histories of fourteen people who were foundational to the Center's evolution.  For the Center's anniversary gala in 2025, Dr. Wagman and student Phoenix McClellan pulled clips and organized them into this presentation.  Featuring the voices of some of the many people whose time and dedication have shaped the LGBTQ Center throughout its two decades, including Rhonda Redman, Hank Mascotte, Phillip Schatz, Meghan Buell, Eli Williams, Drew Gardner, Nancy Mascotte, H.R. Jung, Michael McMillion, Krista Cox, Angela Hankins, Kathryn Kirk, J.D. Schock, Jamie Morgan, Derek McDowell, and Rhiannon Carlson. This episode was produced by Dr. Jamie Wagman and Phoenix McClellan from Saint Mary's College, by Jon Watson and Caleb Matz from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and by George Garner from the Civil Rights Heritage Center.  Full transcript of this episode available here. Want to learn more about South Bend's history? The South Bend Cubs had the leadoff hitter reach base in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, but managed to score just twice. Both runs came in the top of the 5th, when Cristian Hernandez delivered a two-run single to give the Cubs a 2–1 lead. Despite the eventual loss, the Cubs flashed the leather throughout the game. In the bottom of the 6th, Andy Garriola came up with a huge outfield assist, gunning down Bryan Gonzalez at the plate after a sharp single by Chris Brito to keep the Cubs in front. Garriola came through again in the bottom of the 9th with a highlight-reel catch in right field, robbing Colton Becker with a sliding grab for the second out of the inning. Erick Torres then grounded out to third baseman Reginald Preciado, who made a clean throw to first baseman Drew Bowser to end the inning and snuff out a potential River Bandits rally. However, in the bottom of the 10th, the Cubs couldn’t hold off Quad Cities. With Erick Torres starting the inning as the automatic runner at second, Carter Frederick drew a walk. Torres eventually scored, and the River Bandits walked off the Cubs for the second time in the series.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Bend Cubs Fall to River Bandits Despite Rojas’ Spark and Defensive Highlights Davenport, IA — South Bend Cubs starter Brooks Caple made his Midwest League debut Tuesday night against the Quad Cities River Bandits, but a rocky middle stretch spoiled the outing. Caple allowed 8 runs over 3.2 innings—though only 5 were earned—giving up 1 in the second, 3 in the third, and 4 more in the fourth before being lifted. Left-hander Chase Watkins entered in the fourth and provided much-needed stability, recording the final out of the inning and tossing two scoreless frames to keep the Cubs within striking distance. On offense, Jefferson Rojas delivered the night’s biggest spark, lining back-to-back triples in the third and fifth innings. Reginald Preciado added a solo home run in the sixth to bring the Cubs within five at 8–3. Reivaj Garcia chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while Ivan Brethowr shined in the field, making a pair of standout defensive plays in consecutive innings. South Bend briefly held two leads early, but the River Bandits took control with a big push in the middle innings. Quad Cities out-hit the Cubs 11–8 and capitalized on key chances to seal a 10–4 win. With the loss, the Cubs drop another on the road in Iowa, despite promising individual performances from their young core.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Bend Cubs Snap Skid, Beat Wisconsin 8–3 Behind Strong Outing from Egbert and Big Night from Hernandez The South Bend Cubs finally put together back-to-back wins for the first time in over a month, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8–3 with a strong showing both on the mound and at the plate. Kenton Egbert Shines on the Mound Starting pitcher Kenton Egbert delivered his best performance of the season, working five solid innings and allowing just one run. Coming into the game with an 0–5 record and an ERA near 8.00, Egbert found his rhythm early. Though he ran into trouble in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs, reliever Joe Nahas stepped in and limited the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score. Egbert’s ERA dropped nearly a full point, down to around 7.00. Offense Fires on All Cylinders The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the third when Drew Bowser singled home Jefferson Rojas. Later in the inning, Reginald Preciado drove in Cristian Hernandez with another RBI single to make it 2–0. The sixth inning proved pivotal. Wisconsin reliever Tanner Shears struggled, hitting two batters and walking Rojas with the bases loaded to force in a run. A wild pitch brought in Brian Kalmer, and Cristian Hernandez capped the rally with an RBI single to score Rafael Morel, stretching the lead to 7–1. Hernandez Stuffing the Stat Sheet Cristian Hernandez had a standout night, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two singles, and three RBIs. He also showed off his speed on the basepaths, swiping two stolen bases. His all-around performance anchored the Cubs’ offensive surge. Looking Ahead The 8–3 victory gives the Cubs some much-needed momentum as they now hit the road for a series in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River BanditsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick Dean Deals, Cubs Pitching Strikes Out 12, But Offense Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Wisconsin In a tightly contested matchup at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, despite a strong showing on the mound. Starter Nick Dean delivered a quality start, allowing just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. The Cubs’ pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts on the night, keeping the Timber Rattlers’ offense in check. The Cubs struck first in the bottom of the fourth, when Edgar Alvarez crushed his third home run of the season — a solo shot to right-center field. Wisconsin responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, both off Dean, which proved to be the difference. South Bend had a late chance to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alvarez led off with a walk, and Rafael Morel entered as a pinch-runner. But Andy Garriola grounded into a double play, and Reginald Preciado struck out to end the game. Tensions flared in the fourth inning when Cubs bench coach Daniel Wasinger was ejected by home plate umpire Glen Meyerhofer after disputing a batter interference call. Despite the loss, the Cubs’ pitching staff continues to impress, and Alvarez remains a sparkplug in the lineup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cubs Snap Skid in Style, Beat Timber Rattlers 6–2 Behind Gallagher Gem and Wild Double Play The South Bend Cubs got back in the win column Saturday afternoon at Four Winds Field, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6–2 in a game highlighted by a dominant pitching performance and one of the strangest double plays you’ll ever see. Ryan Gallagher was electric on the mound, tossing 6 innings of shutout baseball with 9 strikeouts, allowing just 2 hits and no walks. His outing gave the Cubs a chance to settle in early and stay in control throughout the game. Jefferson Rojas sparked the offense, collecting 3 hits, scoring 2 runs, and driving in another. South Bend put up 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 7th, and added an insurance run in the 8th. Wisconsin’s Tanner Gillis matched Gallagher for much of the game, pitching 6 solid innings with 4 strikeouts and 3 earned runs, but the Timber Rattlers couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The Double Play That Had Everything The game’s defining moment came in the late innings, just as Wisconsin was threatening to mount a comeback. With the bases loaded, the Cubs made a pitching change—and what followed was a defensive sequence for the ages. Marco Dinges lifted a fly ball to left field, where Edgar Alvarez made the catch. Jadher Areinamo tagged up at third and attempted to score. That’s when chaos ensued. Alvarez fired home to catcher Miguel Pabon, who cut down Areinamo at the plate in a rundown. From there, the ball was thrown: From Pabon to second baseman Jefferson Rojas Back to Pabon Then to third baseman Reivaj Garcia Back again to Pabon On to first baseman Brian Kalmer Then to shortstop Cristian Hernandez Eventually, Areinamo was tagged out in a rundown that spanned nearly the entire infield. Meanwhile, another Wisconsin runner had strayed too far off a base during the confusion and was also tagged out—completing an improbable inning-ending double play that killed the Timber Rattlers’ best scoring chance. The crowd at Four Winds Field erupted as the Cubs sprinted off the field, having turned a pressure-packed situation into a momentum-crushing defensive gem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bend Cubs Edged Out by Lugnuts 6–5 Despite Gallagher’s 12 K Gem Lansing, MI — The South Bend Cubs came up just short in a tough 6–5 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday night at Jackson Field, despite a stellar outing from starting pitcher Ryan Gallagher. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick delivered a career-best performance, striking out 12 batters over six innings and allowing just five hits. Unfortunately, two pitches proved costly — a two-run home run by T.J. Schofield-Sam in the second inning and another two-run shot by Sahid Valenzuela in the fifth. Down 4–1 entering the sixth, the Cubs rallied. Drew Bowser lined a two-run single to cut the deficit to one, and the game was tied moments later when Miguel Pabón scored on a controversial fielder’s choice. The Lugnuts failed to turn a double play, and while the throw appeared to beat the runner, the umpire ruled the defensive player wasn’t in contact with second base while possessing the ball. Lugnuts manager Darryl Kennedy strongly disputed the call and was ejected from the game. The Lugnuts regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a catcher’s error, and added what turned out to be the game-winning run in the eighth on a throwing error by the right fielder. South Bend mounted a final rally in the ninth. Brian Kalmer scored on a line-drive single to right by Ivan Brethowr, but Brethowr was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the game. Right fielder Jared Dickey fired to shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, who applied the tag to secure the final out. Despite the loss, South Bend out-hit Lansing 9–6, and Gallagher’s dominance on the mound was a bright spot as the Cubs look to bounce back in the series.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
