South Bend Cubs Fall to River Bandits Despite Rojas’ Spark and Defensive Highlights Davenport, IA — South Bend Cubs starter Brooks Caple made his Midwest League debut Tuesday night against the Quad Cities River Bandits, but a rocky middle stretch spoiled the outing. Caple allowed 8 runs over 3.2 innings—though only 5 were earned—giving up 1 in the second, 3 in the third, and 4 more in the fourth before being lifted. Left-hander Chase Watkins entered in the fourth and provided much-needed stability, recording the final out of the inning and tossing two scoreless frames to keep the Cubs within striking distance. On offense, Jefferson Rojas delivered the night’s biggest spark, lining back-to-back triples in the third and fifth innings. Reginald Preciado added a solo home run in the sixth to bring the Cubs within five at 8–3. Reivaj Garcia chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while Ivan Brethowr shined in the field, making a pair of standout defensive plays in consecutive innings. South Bend briefly held two leads early, but the River Bandits took control with a big push in the middle innings. Quad Cities out-hit the Cubs 11–8 and capitalized on key chances to seal a 10–4 win. With the loss, the Cubs drop another on the road in Iowa, despite promising individual performances from their young core.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
South Bend Cubs Snap Skid, Beat Wisconsin 8–3 Behind Strong Outing from Egbert and Big Night from Hernandez The South Bend Cubs finally put together back-to-back wins for the first time in over a month, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8–3 with a strong showing both on the mound and at the plate. Kenton Egbert Shines on the Mound Starting pitcher Kenton Egbert delivered his best performance of the season, working five solid innings and allowing just one run. Coming into the game with an 0–5 record and an ERA near 8.00, Egbert found his rhythm early. Though he ran into trouble in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs, reliever Joe Nahas stepped in and limited the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score. Egbert’s ERA dropped nearly a full point, down to around 7.00. Offense Fires on All Cylinders The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the third when Drew Bowser singled home Jefferson Rojas. Later in the inning, Reginald Preciado drove in Cristian Hernandez with another RBI single to make it 2–0. The sixth inning proved pivotal. Wisconsin reliever Tanner Shears struggled, hitting two batters and walking Rojas with the bases loaded to force in a run. A wild pitch brought in Brian Kalmer, and Cristian Hernandez capped the rally with an RBI single to score Rafael Morel, stretching the lead to 7–1. Hernandez Stuffing the Stat Sheet Cristian Hernandez had a standout night, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two singles, and three RBIs. He also showed off his speed on the basepaths, swiping two stolen bases. His all-around performance anchored the Cubs’ offensive surge. Looking Ahead The 8–3 victory gives the Cubs some much-needed momentum as they now hit the road for a series in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River BanditsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nick Dean Deals, Cubs Pitching Strikes Out 12, But Offense Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Wisconsin In a tightly contested matchup at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, despite a strong showing on the mound. Starter Nick Dean delivered a quality start, allowing just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. The Cubs’ pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts on the night, keeping the Timber Rattlers’ offense in check. The Cubs struck first in the bottom of the fourth, when Edgar Alvarez crushed his third home run of the season — a solo shot to right-center field. Wisconsin responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, both off Dean, which proved to be the difference. South Bend had a late chance to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alvarez led off with a walk, and Rafael Morel entered as a pinch-runner. But Andy Garriola grounded into a double play, and Reginald Preciado struck out to end the game. Tensions flared in the fourth inning when Cubs bench coach Daniel Wasinger was ejected by home plate umpire Glen Meyerhofer after disputing a batter interference call. Despite the loss, the Cubs’ pitching staff continues to impress, and Alvarez remains a sparkplug in the lineup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Cubs Snap Skid in Style, Beat Timber Rattlers 6–2 Behind Gallagher Gem and Wild Double Play The South Bend Cubs got back in the win column Saturday afternoon at Four Winds Field, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6–2 in a game highlighted by a dominant pitching performance and one of the strangest double plays you’ll ever see. Ryan Gallagher was electric on the mound, tossing 6 innings of shutout baseball with 9 strikeouts, allowing just 2 hits and no walks. His outing gave the Cubs a chance to settle in early and stay in control throughout the game. Jefferson Rojas sparked the offense, collecting 3 hits, scoring 2 runs, and driving in another. South Bend put up 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 7th, and added an insurance run in the 8th. Wisconsin’s Tanner Gillis matched Gallagher for much of the game, pitching 6 solid innings with 4 strikeouts and 3 earned runs, but the Timber Rattlers couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The Double Play That Had Everything The game’s defining moment came in the late innings, just as Wisconsin was threatening to mount a comeback. With the bases loaded, the Cubs made a pitching change—and what followed was a defensive sequence for the ages. Marco Dinges lifted a fly ball to left field, where Edgar Alvarez made the catch. Jadher Areinamo tagged up at third and attempted to score. That’s when chaos ensued. Alvarez fired home to catcher Miguel Pabon, who cut down Areinamo at the plate in a rundown. From there, the ball was thrown: From Pabon to second baseman Jefferson Rojas Back to Pabon Then to third baseman Reivaj Garcia Back again to Pabon On to first baseman Brian Kalmer Then to shortstop Cristian Hernandez Eventually, Areinamo was tagged out in a rundown that spanned nearly the entire infield. Meanwhile, another Wisconsin runner had strayed too far off a base during the confusion and was also tagged out—completing an improbable inning-ending double play that killed the Timber Rattlers’ best scoring chance. The crowd at Four Winds Field erupted as the Cubs sprinted off the field, having turned a pressure-packed situation into a momentum-crushing defensive gem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bend Cubs Edged Out by Lugnuts 6–5 Despite Gallagher’s 12 K Gem Lansing, MI — The South Bend Cubs came up just short in a tough 6–5 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday night at Jackson Field, despite a stellar outing from starting pitcher Ryan Gallagher. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick delivered a career-best performance, striking out 12 batters over six innings and allowing just five hits. Unfortunately, two pitches proved costly — a two-run home run by T.J. Schofield-Sam in the second inning and another two-run shot by Sahid Valenzuela in the fifth. Down 4–1 entering the sixth, the Cubs rallied. Drew Bowser lined a two-run single to cut the deficit to one, and the game was tied moments later when Miguel Pabón scored on a controversial fielder’s choice. The Lugnuts failed to turn a double play, and while the throw appeared to beat the runner, the umpire ruled the defensive player wasn’t in contact with second base while possessing the ball. Lugnuts manager Darryl Kennedy strongly disputed the call and was ejected from the game. The Lugnuts regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a catcher’s error, and added what turned out to be the game-winning run in the eighth on a throwing error by the right fielder. South Bend mounted a final rally in the ninth. Brian Kalmer scored on a line-drive single to right by Ivan Brethowr, but Brethowr was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the game. Right fielder Jared Dickey fired to shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, who applied the tag to secure the final out. Despite the loss, South Bend out-hit Lansing 9–6, and Gallagher’s dominance on the mound was a bright spot as the Cubs look to bounce back in the series.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When a prominent politician does a town hall in Iowa, it sort of defines the unofficial start to the upcoming presidential cycle and their campaign in earnest to win the office. That's just ... tradition. So when former South Bend, Indiana mayor and U.S. Transportation Pete Buttigieg hosted a town hall with VoteVets Wednesday night, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a full 1,272 days before Election Day, November 7, 2028, it's as if we could say both that "he's running for President" and "the 2028 cycle has begun."Right? While he's taking on swipes from current Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy (Trump's lumberjack) and the current President, Pete's out there meeting people in a red state where GOP House members have been told not to. Oh, and while Duffy's whining about what should have been fixed when Joe Biden & Pete were in charge of the FAA, he should be reminded he is among 180 Republicans who voted against additional (and obviously needed) FAA funding. Watch the full town hall & decide for yourself: is Pete running?

Gallagher’s Pitching Gem Leads South Bend Cubs to 5–0 Shutout Over TinCaps It was a picture-perfect day at Four Winds Field, and the South Bend Cubs made sure the fans went home happy with a commanding 5–0 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Behind dominant pitching, timely hitting, and crisp defense, South Bend improved their standing with one of their most complete performances of the season. The story of the day was Ryan Gallagher, who delivered a masterclass on the mound. The right-hander pitched six innings of no-hit baseball, racking up eight strikeouts while walking just one. Gallagher was in total control from the first pitch, keeping TinCaps hitters off balance with a mix of fastballs, breaking balls, and pinpoint command. His performance set the tone early and gave the Cubs a strong foundation. After Gallagher’s dominant outing, the Cubs bullpen kept the momentum going. Luis Rujano took over in the seventh and kept the no-hitter alive for one more inning before the TinCaps finally broke through with a hit in the eighth. Sam Thoresen came in to close things out in the ninth, sealing the combined shutout and allowing just the third Fort Wayne hit of the day. While the pitching stole the headlines, the offense gave the arms plenty of breathing room early. The Cubs came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning, plating four runs to take immediate control. Catcher Miguel Pabón was at the heart of the rally, delivering two RBI singles in the inning as the Cubs batted around. Pabón also had a strong day behind the plate, managing the pitching staff with poise and precision. South Bend tacked on another run later in the game, but with the way the pitching staff performed, it was more than enough. The win showcased what the Cubs are capable of when everything clicks — elite pitching, timely hitting, and sharp fielding all coming together. With the shutout win, the Cubs continue to build momentum as they progress through the season. The hometown crowd was treated to sunshine, strikeouts, and a statement win.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Bend Cubs Fall to TinCaps 8–4; Kohl Franklin Makes Rehab Start The South Bend Cubs dropped Tuesday’s day game to the Fort Wayne TinCaps, 8–4, in front of a packed crowd of 6,000 fans at Four Winds Field on Education Day. The afternoon featured the return of right-hander Kohl Franklin, making his first live appearance since the 2024 season. Franklin, on a rehab assignment, pitched two innings and showed some early-season rust, allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one. Johzan Oquendo followed with an inning of relief, giving up one run on two hits. The Cubs’ bullpen got a major lift from Evan Aschenbeck, who tossed 4.1 innings of strong relief. The lefty allowed just one run and helped stabilize the game while conserving arms for the series ahead. On the offensive side, Edgar Alvarez put the Cubs on the board in the bottom of the 8th with a solo home run, trimming the TinCaps’ lead to 8–2. The Cubs mounted a late rally in the 9th, loading the bases and scoring two runs—one on catcher’s interference and another on a bases-loaded walk. But Fort Wayne reliever Xavier Woods struck out the final two batters to seal the win for the TinCaps.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Somewhere in 2020, Alen switched from sourdough to mead because he wanted to feed his sourdough with honey. There was a small experimental batch and it grew into passion. Fool Moon opened in 2023, but didn't go public until 2024, after wending their way through a mess of paperwork in Romania. I got to meet him and sample his mead, and hang out at the Copa Hidromiel 2024 in Mexico City, where he nabbed a couple medals. Join us to talk mead with Alen! Jason takes a trip to the new Tire Rack/Discount Tire/America's Tire testing facility in Texas: Treadwell Research Park. In addition to testing grip levels on BMWs and Jeeps on a monstrous wet skid pad, off-road course, rock crawling trail and more, he discovers the many lessons to be learned by carefully studying tire wear data – including how where you live can have a huge impact on how quickly you burn through your tires! === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === In this episode, we learn that Tire Rack, America's Tire and Discount Tire are all the same thing! But, more importantly, they now have a giant tire testing facility in Texas: Treadwell Research Park – an expansive property with dirt and mud trails, rock crawling, water crossings, serious grades, an absolutely enormous skid pad (that can be completely submerged in 2 mm of water in no time thanks to a pair of huge reservoirs and some seriously powerful pumps) and even a wet slalom course. Jason experienced all Treadwell had to offer behind the wheel of a 4-door Jeep Wrangler and BMW 330i and reports back. We'll learn that at America's Discount Rack you can get free tire rotations (with tire purchase) and free flat repair (no purchase necessary!). But they don't hand out these services out of the kindness of their tire-loving hearts. It's all part of Treadwell's plan to collect and analyze all kinds of tire wear data to help customers make informed decisions when buying new tires and make better tires. They'll collect information about a tire's make, model, mileage, geographic location and more to find what compounds and tread patterns are best for specific use cases and guide customers to the best choice for their vehicle, driving style, climate, and location. For instance, they have discovered that folks living in twisty, hilly western Pennsylvania go through tires 20% faster than folks living in Nebraska. Derek suggests Treadwell implement a tire wear score so enthusiasts can compare notes and compete for total tire destruction domination. Similar to Treadwell Research Park (and Tire Rack's other testing facility in South Bend, Indiana), Derek had the chance to experience a flooded skid “pan” at the CHP's emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) training grounds driving in Ford Crown Victorias and Dodge Chargers. Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained has been on a mission to teach the world about the importance of tires, and recently pitted a F80 BMW M3 Competition on mid-grade tires against a diesel Chysler PT Cruiser wearing fresh Continentals. Science ensued. Tires are indeed very important – and while some *coughpirellicough* will grip like no other, they tend to disintegrate in short order (and dramatically so). But they're not all bad – the guys have kind things to say about the Cinturato CN36 and CN12. But the Carmudgeon tire of choice remains Michelins and Vredsteins, which are mounted on everything from Jason's e-Golf, the Van, Jynah, the Ferrari 308, Derek's R129, and even Jake's wife's Crosstrek. The guys will also discuss the Avon CR6ZZ, Trofeos and Cup 2s. Plus the Michelin AS3+ on Jason's Mom's Golf that wore down unusually quickly – this right after he had just replaced some 2-year-old cracking Hankooks with them. Perhaps his mom's regular and sustained driving at 100 mph is to blame… We'll also cover cheap lighting from oh, oh, oh, O'Reilly's, Wagner halogens, and automotive lighting gemstones from Carello and Marchal. It's all in the details! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Final Score: Cedar Rapids Kernels 9, South Bend Cubs 1 The South Bend Cubs dropped the series finale to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, closing out a difficult road trip with a 9–1 loss. The defeat drops the Cubs to 1–13 on the road this season and gives the Kernels five wins in the six-game set. South Bend struck first with a Carter Trice RBI single in the top of the first. Trice also stood out defensively, making key plays in center field during the third and fourth innings to momentarily keep the game close. Trice and Reginald Preciado each recorded two hits in the game. Starter Kenten Egbert gave up back-to-back singles before being pulled for Joe Nahas in the fifth. That inning unraveled quickly, as the Kernels sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs on four singles to take control. Cedar Rapids later added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, finishing with 11 hits to South Bend’s 9. Reliever Luis Rujano provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 innings and striking out three. The Cubs had a chance to rally in the eighth with the bases loaded but couldn’t push across another run. South Bend returns home to Four Winds Field next week for a six-game homestand against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, hoping to reverse their road struggles and get back on trackSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The South Bend Cubs fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 8–3 on Saturday. Despite an aggressive on the basepaths with four stolen bases, the Cubs managed just six hits and left nine runners stranded—most of them in the early innings—missing key opportunities to shift momentum. Ryan Gallagher got the start for South Bend and went 2.2 innings before giving way to Connor Schultz, who initially stopped the bleeding by recording the final out of the third. However, Schultz ran into serious trouble in the fourth and fifth innings, surrendering five runs on five hits while issuing three walks. The Kernels capitalized on Cubs pitching struggles and pulled away to secure the winSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cedar Rapids Kernels Take Game One Over South Bend Cubs, 10–4 CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — The South Bend Cubs couldn’t overcome early and late surges from the Cedar Rapids Kernels, falling 10–4 in the series opener Tuesday night. Cedar Rapids jumped on Cubs starter Tyler Schlaffer right away, plating four runs in the first inning. Schlaffer lasted just one frame before giving way to Conner Schultz, who provided 3.1 innings of steady relief, allowing only one run. Carlo Reyes followed and tossed two scoreless innings to keep South Bend within striking distance. The Cubs fought back in the fourth, erupting for four runs to tie the game. Jefferson Rojas launched his first home run of the season — a two-run shot — and Reginald Preciado added a two-RBI single to center, scoring Andy Garriola and Reivaj Garcia. South Bend added pressure on the bases with two double steals in the inning and finished the game with six stolen bases. However, the momentum shifted again in the bottom of the seventh. Evan Taylor made his South Bend debut and struggled, issuing a leadoff walk before surrendering a two-run homer to Gabriel Gonzalez. Taylor allowed five runs in the frame as the Kernels pulled away for good. Despite strong offensive efforts, including Preciado’s first three-hit game of the year, the Cubs were stifled by Cedar Rapids’ defense, which turned four double plays to squash potential rallies. Final Score: Cedar Rapids 10, South Bend 4See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The South Bend Cubs left ten men on base and, despite a strong relief appearance from Chase Watkins, dropped the series to the Beloit Sky Carp, four games to two, after a 4–3 loss on a beautiful, sun-soaked afternoon at Four Winds Field. Beloit scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 3–0 lead. South Bend answered in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Bowser roped his fourth double of the year, driving in Jefferson Rojas and Carter Trice to cut the deficit to 3–2. In the bottom of the sixth, Reginald Preciado tied the game with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to center. In the top of the eighth, with Vince Riley on the mound, the Sky Carp strung together three consecutive singles to reclaim a 4–3 lead. Riley and the Cubs’ defense limited the damage, throwing out a runner at home. South Bend put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth but could not capitalize. On the heels of No. 4 Archbishop Spalding's (Md.) 11-6 win over No. 2 Calvert Hall (Md.) Tuesday night, IL's Dan Kaplan, Dan Aburn, Sean Walsh and Terry Foy get together to discuss the national high school landscape. In addition to chaos at the top where it seems like everyone can beat every, Foy breaks down the news of Culver (Ind.) coach Jon Birnser stepping down at the end of the season, Walsh details his trip to Ontario in which he watched Culver beat Western Reserve (Ohio) and The Hill Academy (Ont.) and Foy outlines his trip to Notre Dame for St. Anthony's (N.Y.), Chaminade (N.Y.), St. Ignatius (Calif.), Valor Christian (Colo.), Upper Arlington (Ohio), MICDS (Mo.) and Loyola Academy (Ill.). From there, Kaplan dives deeper into Lawrenceville (N.J.), who he saw top Ignatius last week, and wraps with a breakdown of the No. 1 team in the Q-Collar National High School Rankings: Loomis Chaffee (Conn.).
