A Texas native who moved to South Bend in 1948, Paula Gonzalez saw first-hand how our city's Latinx migrant and immigrant community grew.Paula spent her childhood working day and night in a tomato packing house in Edinburg, Texas. When she moved to South Bend, she followed the path of many migrant workers, first laboring in the fields of the Martin Blad farm. In 1957, she began working in the dining hall at the University of Notre Dame, a position she held until her retirement in 1992.Settling in a Polish neighborhood on Western Avenue, Paula faced the challenge of learning English "the hard way" while navigating a community that was just beginning to transition into the predominately Latinx neighborhood it is today.As a dedicated community advocate, in 1979, she led the first celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in South Bend, ensuring the history of the Latinx community would be recognized.In 2004, Dr. Les Lamon and David Healey sat down with Ms. Gonzalez to record her life story. They talked about her experiences as a migrant worker, her journey to South Bend, and how she helped establish a sense of community for the city's Latinx residents.This episode was produced by Caleb Matz from the Ernestine M. This week on the Hemp Show, we're revisiting some of the folks we met during our National Hemp Tour of 2021. Five years ago this summer the Industrial Hemp Podcast hit the road to map the industry as it was then. Hemp farmers, processors and manufacturers were few and far between at the time. One of the stops we made in the summer of 2021 was South Bend Industrial Hemp near Great Bend, Kansas, where Melissa Nelson, her husband Aaron Baldwin, and brother-in-law Rich Baldwin had recently installed a decortication machine that processed raw hemp bales into usable streams of fiber and hurd. Melissa's vision for growth has always been about building a resilient regional supply chain. South Bend Industrial Hemp developed a growers group with the intention of educating local farmers to grow the crop. Five years later, the team at South Bend works with a group of 27 growers across Kansas, producing around 7,000 acres of hemp this season. "Our farmers are everything," Nelson said. "At the end of the day, we couldn't do this without them. And the responsibility that we feel because of the trust that they put in us is immeasurable. I carry that weight very heavily on my shoulders and it's very important to me that they have success." I state that Michigan canceled the 1910 game over eligibility paperwork, and that decision froze the dispute for 33 years. We explain that Michigan's athletic director called off the game because Notre Dame listed players who exceeded allowed years of varsity play. I describe how the argument never resolved and how Fritz Chrysler later offered a two‑game experiment that reopened the series in 1942. We recount the first game back in South Bend on November 14, 1942, when Michigan rallied to win 32 to 20. I note that the teams met again in 1943 but did not play annually and did not resume regular meetings until 1978. I trace the arc from the first Michigan‑taught lesson in 1887 through Michigan's early dominance, Notre Dame's rise under Knute Rockne, and the altered tenor after Notre Dame defeated Michigan in 1909. Signs of Life with Bob Ginsberg Negative Energy, Grief Counseling, and the Ethics of Delivering Messages with Dusten Lyvers Medium Insights host Roman Karpishka catches up with newly credentialed Dr. Dusten Lyvers, a Forever Family Foundation certified medium, about negative energy, Ouija boards, grief therapy, and the ethics of delivering difficult messages from spirit. A Reunion And A New Doctorate Roman Karpishka opens Signs of Life's Medium Insights hour by welcoming back certified Forever Family Foundation medium Dusten Lyvers, joking about the pronunciation of his last name and tracing it to an old family surname, Levers, recorded in an ancestry book dating to 1669. Lyvers shares that since his last appearance, around Christmas, he has finished a seven-year doctoral journey and can now be called Dr. Dusten. Karpishka congratulates him, and the two banter about hair, aging, and Theresa Caputo's line that 'the higher the hair, the closer to God.' The mood is warm and unhurried, setting up an hour built around open conversation rather than readings; Karpishka repeats his standing rule that the show never delivers messages on air. He reminds listeners they can call in with questions, and the two settle into catching up before turning to the heavier subject of the approaching anniversary of September 11. 9/11 And The Weight Of Loss With the anniversary of September 11 one day away, Karpishka asks whether the date feels different to a medium who works with grieving clients across the country. Lyvers says the heaviness is constant in his practice because most of his clients live in the United States and many have been touched by the day personally or know someone who was. He describes reading a few weeks earlier for a woman whose relative was near the city during the attacks, calling it a significant moment for her. Karpishka suggests the emotional weight builds like a bell curve around the date itself. The exchange is brief but sets a reflective tone, linking personal loss to the wider themes the show returns to throughout the hour: how spirit communication intersects with real grief, how mediums carry the emotional residue of their clients' histories, and how national tragedies leave traces that Lyvers says he can still sense years later in the people who come to him for readings. Negative Energy, Ouija Boards, And Real Exorcists Caller Tim from Pennsylvania, prompted by the coming anniversary, asks about evil and negative energy in the afterlife given conflicting claims from mediums, religions, and Ouija board warnings. Lyvers says he was the only medium in a Forever Family Foundation study for the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness Studies who described encountering negative manifestations of energy rather than only positive ones. He recalls investigating reportedly haunted locations with Michiana Paranormal Investigations and feeling watched and unwelcome, and argues most mediums simply block themselves off from that side. He advises that Ouija boards are tools requiring protection and intention rather than something to avoid outright. Talk turns to The Exorcist, with Karpishka calling it the scariest film ever made, and Lyvers describing real exorcists connected to Notre Dame University near his home in South Bend, Indiana, while stressing that genuine hauntings are rare compared with psychic imprints. Tim also recalls predicting, before the last election, that the outcome would go a certain way, a detail the hosts quickly steer away from politics. Delivering Hard Messages With Care Karpishka asks how a medium handles a painful message, and Lyvers explains that 'delivery' is a skill taught at the Arthur Findlay College in England, where softening a message does not mean withholding truth. He describes a recent reading in which a deceased baby validated a grieving father's small emotional progress without Lyvers passing along a harder note about the marriage. The conversation moves through gender identity on the other side, which Lyvers frames as energy rather than fixed biology, and briefly touches on continued intimacy in spirit form. He explains why sessions run a set length, comparing it to a therapist's boundaries and insisting spirits respect time just as the living do. Asked about sensory impressions, Lyvers says he experiences clairvoyance, clairsentience, and an unusually strong clairaudience that lets him hear accents and vocal qualities, joking that he can sometimes tell if a spirit sounds like Sylvia Browne, whose old videos, he notes, are now circulating again on social media years after her death. A Haunted Apartment And A Search For Answers Crystal calls from New Hampshire describing years of frightening activity in her apartment that began in September 2023, weeks after a sudden death in her life, including sightings of a nun on her balcony, a floating head, and photos that appeared to show movement. Lyvers tells her he doubts a portal was opened but says significant loss often becomes a doorway through which people suddenly begin sensing spirit, sometimes overnight, a pattern he says many mediums describe in their own histories. He recommends she keep protecting and cleansing her space, connect with a support community, and seek out a spiritually open therapist rather than face the experience alone, adding that her sensitivity may itself indicate mediumship ability. Karpishka points her toward Victor Zammit's online resources and Lyvers mentions Psychology Today's therapist directory, which lets users filter for practitioners open to spirituality. Crystal says the activity has eased since she stopped photographing it, and thanks the hosts before the call ends warmly. Grief, Growth, And Building A Practice Karpishka asks about connecting with people whose minds have been altered by Alzheimer's or dementia before death, and Lyvers explains that mediums sometimes sense such people are already partly crossed over, their souls beginning to detach before physical death occurs. He reflects on what sustains him in the work, describing the reward of watching grief soften into humor and peace, and contrasts it with his frustration at clients who book reading after reading without integrating any message into real change. Lyvers, trained as a licensed clinician, says he hopes to compile a national list of spiritually open therapists. He plugs his eight-week intuitive and mediumship development courses at Sacred Waters, his Linktree, and his website, Dustenlyvers.com, mentioning upcoming group readings in Ottawa and travel bookings roughly a week out. Karpishka thanks him for the hour, closes with Fran Ginsberg's line that loved ones are 'a heartbeat away,' and signs off until next month's Medium Insights.

But rather than conventional evangelising, the times call for a posture of listening, hospitality and dialogue as a better way to connect.Christian Smith is a leading figure in the sociology of religion. Best known for coining the term “moralistic therapeutic deism” to describe the beliefs of American teenagers, he has written many influential works on faith, culture and the moral life. In 1959, Roselyn Davids was listening to an NBC radio program hosted by Bob Considine when she heard David Sims, a Black father of eight living in South Bend, Indiana, say that he had never been invited into a white person's home as a guest. Roselyn decided to change that. She and her husband, Marienus, invited the entire Sims family to their farm near Spring Valley, Minnesota. What followed was a friendship between two families that crossed racial lines during a turbulent period in American history and eventually gained national attention. Tonight, I'll be speaking with Eric Christianson, co-author of South Bend to Spring Valley: The Davids-Sims Story. The book was originally the dream of one of the Davids' children, and Eric's late wife, Joyce. As Joyce's health declined, she asked Eric to help complete the project. Near the end of her life, she requested that Eric finish the book.
