We talk with Chris Lee about his new book Shades Of Green, a journey of discovery around Ireland to learn about one of the world's oldest football cultures. Along the way, Chris talks to fans, historians and academics. He uncovers a complex story of politics, identity and division, but also one of hope, reconciliation and glory.

On St Patrick's Day - 17 March 2025 - I gave a talk about my new book, 'Shades of Green: A Journey into Irish Football' at Dulwich Hamlet FC, co-hosted by the Football and War Network with the support of Stanchion Books. Have a listen!
With the Premier Division on a hiatus, Dan is in Bulgaria for an international break that is unlikely to live for long in the memory and the first part of this show centres in on the changing dynamics and relationships within Irish football. Where does the balance of power lie? Are we really headed for a civil war? And who is fighting who? Jonathan Corbett is a topical guest in that context, with the long serving Galway United director – who is stepping back from his front line role – speaking with Johnny about the lie of an ever changing land. Another crowded mailbag takes us in different directions with familiar Bohs angst, pitch discussions, upmarket dressing room eavesdropping and an unlikely Conan Byrne/JP McManus comparison on the agenda. With thanks to Rascals Brewing, Collar & Cuff, Future Ticketing and Sport Cosanta, here's your weekly fix.
My new book, Shades of Green: A Journey into Irish Football, is out NOW! It's part-groundhop, part-history discovery of football on the island of Ireland as an outsider. My thanks to author and journalist James Hendicott for standing in as host in this episode to interview me (!)

AS THE LEAGUE of Ireland season draws towards its nerve-shredding final day, Gav and Sinead discuss the boom in popularity of domestic football. Why have crowds increased so significantly this decade? And can the rising numbers be leveraged into that most elusive and long-desired of things: a thriving football industry in Ireland. The pair talk about what needs to happen next to make that aspiration real, from improved stadiums with greater capacity, to television deals with major international networks and an academy structure which provides a conveyor belt of elite level talent which can further improve the standard of the league and lead to more hefty transfer fees from wealthy overseas clubs. With Shelbourne one win away from an unlikely title triumph, the impact of Damien Duff is examined. What is it about the League of Ireland that so energises one of Ireland's greatest ever players? He says he will never manage an Irish club other than Shelbourne, but could he step into the Ireland manager's chair in future, despite his past differences of opinion with the FAI? Hosted on Acast. Last week's FAI's appearance before the Public Accounts Committee did not go particularly well. Members of the committee expressed concern regarding the role of the chief executive after Jonathan Hill explained that an €11,500 payment in lieu of holidays not taken was just a “miscalculation”. His request for this payment at the end of an email was just a joke, he said. But many of the documents submitted to the committee were heavily redacted. Meanwhile, more than three months after Stephen Kenny stepped down, the FAI has yet to appoint a new manager to the men's Irish football team. On today's In the News podcast Irish Times sports writer Malachy Clerkin explores why the FAI seems unable to get its house in order. Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Aideen Finnegan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
