South Bend Cubs Snap Skid, Beat Wisconsin 8–3 Behind Strong Outing from Egbert and Big Night from Hernandez The South Bend Cubs finally put together back-to-back wins for the first time in over a month, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8–3 with a strong showing both on the mound and at the plate. Kenton Egbert Shines on the Mound Starting pitcher Kenton Egbert delivered his best performance of the season, working five solid innings and allowing just one run. Coming into the game with an 0–5 record and an ERA near 8.00, Egbert found his rhythm early. Though he ran into trouble in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs, reliever Joe Nahas stepped in and limited the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score. Egbert’s ERA dropped nearly a full point, down to around 7.00. Offense Fires on All Cylinders The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the third when Drew Bowser singled home Jefferson Rojas. Later in the inning, Reginald Preciado drove in Cristian Hernandez with another RBI single to make it 2–0. The sixth inning proved pivotal. Wisconsin reliever Tanner Shears struggled, hitting two batters and walking Rojas with the bases loaded to force in a run. A wild pitch brought in Brian Kalmer, and Cristian Hernandez capped the rally with an RBI single to score Rafael Morel, stretching the lead to 7–1. Hernandez Stuffing the Stat Sheet Cristian Hernandez had a standout night, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two singles, and three RBIs. He also showed off his speed on the basepaths, swiping two stolen bases. His all-around performance anchored the Cubs’ offensive surge. Looking Ahead The 8–3 victory gives the Cubs some much-needed momentum as they now hit the road for a series in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River BanditsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick Dean Deals, Cubs Pitching Strikes Out 12, But Offense Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Wisconsin In a tightly contested matchup at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, despite a strong showing on the mound. Starter Nick Dean delivered a quality start, allowing just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. The Cubs’ pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts on the night, keeping the Timber Rattlers’ offense in check. The Cubs struck first in the bottom of the fourth, when Edgar Alvarez crushed his third home run of the season — a solo shot to right-center field. Wisconsin responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, both off Dean, which proved to be the difference. South Bend had a late chance to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alvarez led off with a walk, and Rafael Morel entered as a pinch-runner. But Andy Garriola grounded into a double play, and Reginald Preciado struck out to end the game. Tensions flared in the fourth inning when Cubs bench coach Daniel Wasinger was ejected by home plate umpire Glen Meyerhofer after disputing a batter interference call. Despite the loss, the Cubs’ pitching staff continues to impress, and Alvarez remains a sparkplug in the lineup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Cubs Snap Skid in Style, Beat Timber Rattlers 6–2 Behind Gallagher Gem and Wild Double Play The South Bend Cubs got back in the win column Saturday afternoon at Four Winds Field, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6–2 in a game highlighted by a dominant pitching performance and one of the strangest double plays you’ll ever see. Ryan Gallagher was electric on the mound, tossing 6 innings of shutout baseball with 9 strikeouts, allowing just 2 hits and no walks. His outing gave the Cubs a chance to settle in early and stay in control throughout the game. Jefferson Rojas sparked the offense, collecting 3 hits, scoring 2 runs, and driving in another. South Bend put up 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 7th, and added an insurance run in the 8th. Wisconsin’s Tanner Gillis matched Gallagher for much of the game, pitching 6 solid innings with 4 strikeouts and 3 earned runs, but the Timber Rattlers couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The Double Play That Had Everything The game’s defining moment came in the late innings, just as Wisconsin was threatening to mount a comeback. With the bases loaded, the Cubs made a pitching change—and what followed was a defensive sequence for the ages. Marco Dinges lifted a fly ball to left field, where Edgar Alvarez made the catch. Jadher Areinamo tagged up at third and attempted to score. That’s when chaos ensued. Alvarez fired home to catcher Miguel Pabon, who cut down Areinamo at the plate in a rundown. From there, the ball was thrown: From Pabon to second baseman Jefferson Rojas Back to Pabon Then to third baseman Reivaj Garcia Back again to Pabon On to first baseman Brian Kalmer Then to shortstop Cristian Hernandez Eventually, Areinamo was tagged out in a rundown that spanned nearly the entire infield. Meanwhile, another Wisconsin runner had strayed too far off a base during the confusion and was also tagged out—completing an improbable inning-ending double play that killed the Timber Rattlers’ best scoring chance. The crowd at Four Winds Field erupted as the Cubs sprinted off the field, having turned a pressure-packed situation into a momentum-crushing defensive gem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
