Let's goooo!! #Chargers #NFL #tomtelesco In this video, we take a look at the 11-year tenure of Tom Telesco as the general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers. Telesco was hired in 2013 and was responsible for drafting and signing some of the team's best players, such as Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa, Derwin James, and Austin Ekeler. He also made some savvy trades and free agent acquisitions, such as bringing in Chris Harris Jr., Linval Joseph, and Jared Cook. However, Telesco also had his share of misses and mistakes, such as drafting Mike Williams, Forrest Lamp, Jerry Tillery, and Kenneth Murray in the first round, failing to address the offensive line and the secondary for years, and letting go of Philip Rivers, Melvin Gordon, Hunter Henry, and Casey Hayward. He also hired and fired three head coaches in his tenure: Mike McCoy, Anthony Lynn, and Brandon Staley. We will examine the good, the bad, and the ugly of Telesco's 11 years at the helm of the Chargers, and how his decisions shaped the team's fortunes and failures. We will also discuss whether he deserved to be fired along with Staley after the team's humiliating 63-21 loss to the Raiders in Week 15 of the 2023 season. Matthew 5: 1-12When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Say the name, toll the bell, light the candle. It may seem like a strange tradition, at least from the outside. But the church has been celebrating this day, in some way or another, for over 1700 years. Meta Herrick Carlson writes movingly about this day in her book Speak it Plain and I share her words, call it a prayer or poem, with you this morning. She writes, “I listen for it tolling from steeples in the sky. The bells stir the air between here and heartache. For a moment, the mystery satisfies, and we are all together. I hang onto memories and promises with my fingernails just barely - not because I am certain, but because it is all that's left. Because if I let go, I will fall and break apart.Perhaps, someone will speak of my Beloved today and then I will not be so alone. Hearing the name aloud makes it real, shares the weight like a new song I think I've always known. There are candles to light, the quiet resistance of remembering.”It is comforting to hear something so accurately describe what or how you feel. Carlson does that for me with her description of mourning: it's sad like heartache, it's a heaviness that weighs on you until tears or tiredness take over; its the griping of memory for dear life, its a loneliness we can't quite shake. Yet Jesus says blessed are those who mourn. That's the thing about a beatitude… it's contrary to what we think its going to say or should say. Blessed are those who mourn is not what we expected. Mourning doesn't feel like a blessing. You don't need me to tell you that. You have lost a loved one before, maybe it was this year or the last or 20 years ago; regardless of when, the mourning is still there. We all mourn but we might not all mourn the same. Maybe you've been on the receiving end, hopefully not here, of someone saying “its been x number of years, don't you think its time for closure?” But that's not really how it works is it? The feeling of loss may not ever leave. Today though is about the promise of comfort Jesus talks of. Today is a day set aside to speak about your beloved, to remember them, and by doing so, receive a little bit of comfort in the midst of mourning. Remembering may seem insignificant, a way of living in the past and not present in the hear and now. Frederick Buechner says there are two kinds of remembering. “One way is to make an excursion from the living present back into the dead past.” Like a longing to live in the days already gone.“The other way is to summon the dead past back into the living present. The young widow remembers her husband, and he is there beside her.” That's the kind of remembering Jesus had in mind when seated at the last supper, he said to his disciples and to all of us, do this in remembrance of me. In our remembrance of that night, of that meal, Jesus and all the company of heaven, all those we have lost, including your beloved, are right beside you at this meal. That's the kind of remembering we are doing today when we say their names, ring the bell, and light the candles. So often we don't ask about someone else's beloved, the people or person they've lost because we think it'll make them upset, that it will draw back unwanted memories, that it's salt in a still healing wound. But here, in this community, on this day, to speak the name is not salt but a soothing salve. Because when you say to someone, tell me about your beloved, and a story is shared, we who mourn are less alone. When you say, I remember when they did that or when they said this, you help the weight of grief be shared with another set of shoulders. “Perhaps, someone will speak of my Beloved today and then I will not be so alone.”That's one of the reasons I find funerals so moving. This may sound morbid, but I don't intend for it to. Some of the most formative, insightful, grace-filled moments in my first year here at Cross of Grace have been the funerals and memorials. I never met Jim Smith, or Chuck Hershberger or Janis Janelsons. And I met with Bev Bancroft and Mike McCoy too few times. I did not have the pleasure to know them as many of you did. Yet, leading up to and at their funerals, I heard many stories and memories, about when they were a child or a young adult, about what led them here and what they did for work, what and who they were proud of. It gave me a fuller picture of not only that person, but of those who loved them and a deeper understanding of this community. On those days we are unafraid to speak their names and share their stories. And those gathered were comforted. That's the promise; blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Of all the beatitudes, this is one where you can make that promise happen, here and now. You can help give someone else that comfort, if even for a moment, simply by speaking of their beloved. So today ask someone else about their beloved. Invite someone to share that memory they are holding onto with just their fingertips, and share the weight of mourning. Even better, make this a practice throughout the holiday season. It may seem early to talk about the holidays, but don't act like some of you don't already have your Christmas decorations out. You know who you are (we do too). In this season the weight and loneliness can feel acute and overbearing, but you can be the promised comfort Jesus speaks of to someone else. In doing so you too will get a fuller picture not only of that person, but of those who loved them. And if that sounds like you receive a lot of joy in being that comfort for someone else, consider being a Stephen minister. If you need that comfort, consider getting a Stephen Minister, thats what they do!And while that comfort may only be temporary, today is also about holding on to the promise that one day, we will receive the full comfort of being reunited with all our beloved ones, forevermore. As Meta wrote, our quiet resistance to death is remembering. But Jesus' quiet resistance was his work on the cross, where, as the spiritual reminds us, he never said a mumblin word. And it's through his work that we are forgiven and the promise to be with God and loved one's is made ours. Receive that promise as a gift this morning. That your beloved is a saint, not because they lived a nearly perfect life, but because as Luther liked to say they are a forgiven sinner. In our tradition that's what makes a saint, and we can trust that all saints now rest with God and one day so will you. That too is the promise of comfort Christ makes to us in this beatitude.Today is not simply saying the name, tolling the bells and lighting the candles. It's much more than that. It's holding on to our memories, to our beloved, and to Christ's promise with all we have, if even by the tips of our fingers. It is the practice of quiet resistance to death and all that separates us from God and one another. So I invite you to practice the quiet resistance of remembering. Who is your beloved? As we sing our hymn of the day, come light a candle for them, remember them, and be comforted by the promise that you, dear saint, will be with them once again. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Matthew 11:25-30At that time, Jesus began to say, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent, and revealed them to children. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things on heaven and earth have been handed over to me by my Father, for no one knows the Son, except the Father, and no one knows the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.“Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” In addition to what I've already told you about Anne and Janis Janelsins, I've had a few conversations with and about some very weary people lately. I prayed with Mike McCoy in the nursing home a week or so ago, thinking it might be the last time I'd get to do that. I've seen Tom and Bev Bancroft, and their daughters, off and on the last couple of weeks wondering the same about Bev each time I say goodbye. I stopped to see Dick Bowen on Friday, because he had had some weary days in the hospital last week. He was back home at Springhurst in time for his 91st birthday on Wednesday and planning to get to the New Pal football game Friday night. (“Weary” doesn't last as long for some of us as it does for others, I guess.)And there are a few other conversations I've had that I'm not at liberty to share here. But suffice it to say – as too many of us know – weary is a thing, people. Heavy burdens are being carried. God's people are yoked … weighed down … heavy hearted. And today's worship is meant to be, not just a light-hearted break from the weariness of the world, but a reminder of the ways God shows up to shoulder our burdens, too. What's funny – and what would certainly be terrifying for the animals among us, if they spoke better English – is how very literally God has used animals to bear the burdens of God's people, over time.In our Bethel class Thursday, we remembered how God commanded the Israelites, in the book of Leviticus, to lay hands on a goat, symbolically loading up the four-legged beast with the sins and brokenness and burdens of the community, and then sending that poor guy off into the wilderness – along with all of those sins, all of that brokenness, and all of those burdens – as a sign that God's people need not carry any of that themselves any longer. It was a deliberate, powerful, visual, “hands-on” expression of unburdening for God's children – meant to free them up to live differently, generously, graciously, and thereby more able to bless the world around them in a way they couldn't until their burdens were lifted.I hope none of us are sending our pets into the wilderness anytime soon – though one of my dogs is asking for it, if she keeps barking at the rest of us to go outside at all hours of the night. But the truth is, these pets we celebrate and that we'll bless today, shoulder, carry and relieve our burdens in some pretty practical and holy ways. The Center for Disease Control says there are lots of health benefits that come from owning a pet. Depending on the animal – and if we're doing it right – they can increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. All of that can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides, too. And, of course, pets can help manage loneliness and depression by giving us companionship. There are, indeed, children and adults for whom a pet is their only friend, their only safe place, their only confidant and their only regular source of love, comfort, and joy. Now, I suspect many of you have seen or heard the poem, “God Made a Dog.” It's made its way around the internet in recent years and it's so on-the-nose for a day like today, that I've resisted using it for a pet-blessing until now. You can Google it later and see the many and various video montages people have assembled to accompany its reading – which is often done by someone who sounds a lot like Paul Harvey, if you know who that is. Anyway, the poem goes like this:And on the 9th-day, God looked down on his wide-eyed children and said, ‘They need a companion.' So, God made a dog.God said, ‘I need somebody willing to wake up, give kisses, pee on a tree, sleep all day, wake up again, give more kisses, then stay up until midnight, basking in the glare of a television set.' So, God made a dog.God said, ‘I need somebody willing to sit, then stay, then roll over. Then – with no ego or complaint – dress in hats they don't need and costumes they don't understand.‘I need somebody who can break wind without a first care – without a second thought – who can chase tails, sniff crotches, fetch sticks, and lift spirits with a lick. Somebody who, no matter what you didn't do, or couldn't take, or didn't win, or couldn't make, will love you without judgment just the same.' So, God made a dog.God said, ‘I need somebody strong enough to pull sleds and find bombs, yet gentle enough to love babies and lead the blind. Somebody who will spend all day on a couch with a resting head and supportive eyes to lift the spirts of a broken heart.'So, God mad a dog.It had to be somebody who remained patient and loyal, even through loneliness. Somebody to care, cuddle, snuggle, and nuzzle, and cheer, and charm, and snore and slobber, and eat the trash and chase the squirrels.Somebody who would bring a family together with the selflessness of an open heart. Somebody who would bark, and then pant, and then reply with the rapid wag of a tail when their best friend says, ‘Let's go for a ride in the car.'So, God made a dog.So, thank God for the dogs and the cats and the birds and the goats, too. They are a gift and a blessing and the bearers of many a burden. But let's learn from them and from Jesus, too – and let's not leave it up to them or only to Jesus – because people are weary, people. And carrying heavy burdens. And they could use a shoulder, or a friend, or some forgiveness, and a load off, for sure. And it is our call and blessing to rest in the arms of that kind of love when we need it, for ourselves; and to welcome others to the same – to introduce them to the God of mercy and hope we know in Jesus; and to share the gentle, humble, light and easy burden of God's grace on his behalf.Amen

Driving straight into golf's heartland, the Moonlight Graham Show tees up an unexpected tale where Iowa takes center stage in the golfing world. Drawing on these unexpected links, Tim delves deep into the significant Iowa presence in two of golf's most esteemed events: the Ryder Cup and the Walker Cup. Despite its seemingly unimpressive golfing history, Iowa has managed to leave an indelible mark this year with Zach Johnson, arguably the state's finest golfer, captaining the Ryder Cup team. In a twist of fate or perhaps sheer talent, Mike McCoy, a Des Moines local, headed the Walker Cup's U.S. team earlier this year against Great Britain and Ireland. Against the backdrop of golfing giants, how did two Iowans land such prestigious roles in the same year? Unearth the answer, savor some golf trivia, and get a unique perspective on the state's golfing narrative in this episode. And as the Ryder Cup action unfolds, root for the Americans and perhaps, for that little slice of Iowa making its mark on the world stage.

The Moonlight Graham Show

This week we are sending out dreams of spring and early tee times on the weekend. Tim sits down with Nate McCoy to talk all things golf and life after you start carrying your own bag. The former Cyclone and pro golfer shares his perspective on the game, his career, and his decision to make a career in golf without the clubs in his hands.   Nate McCoy was an accomplished prep golfer and the son of one of the top amateur golfers in the country, Mike McCoy. The game is basically in his DNA. After a dominating state title in his senior year of high school, McCoy emerged as one of the top golfers on the Cyclone team in 2008. He put together one of the best resumes in Cyclone golf history in his four seasons. Some might even argue he was the best male athlete at Iowa State in 2012, as he was named the Male Athlete of the Year over Royce White and Steele Jantz. Who says golfers aren't athletes?   After finishing his college career and playing against the guys who became some of the biggest names in golf, like Jordan Spaeth and Brooks Koepka, McCoy teed up his own pro career. He took his clubs and his new wife to Canada to play on the professional tour in Canada. Crisscrossing Canada, earning a win, and making tons of memories was a great experience before he came back to the states. After 3 years as a pro and playing on the Korn Ferry Tour, he returned home to start the next phase of his life and career after 2016. He was playing well and had some high finishes, but with a wife and baby at home, he was ready to head to the clubhouse.   Nate McCoy is still a competitive amateur with several recent wins on his resume and eyes on a national title and his name on a Masters scorecard. In 2022, McCoy won the Iowa Amateur, Iowa Masters, and Iowa Match Play titles. Today, his professional life is focused on promoting and building golf in Iowa. As a true amateur with a day job, he is able to spend his time with his wife and kids while still trying to win every time he steps on the course.
