South Bend Cubs Fall to River Bandits Despite Rojas’ Spark and Defensive Highlights Davenport, IA — South Bend Cubs starter Brooks Caple made his Midwest League debut Tuesday night against the Quad Cities River Bandits, but a rocky middle stretch spoiled the outing. Caple allowed 8 runs over 3.2 innings—though only 5 were earned—giving up 1 in the second, 3 in the third, and 4 more in the fourth before being lifted. Left-hander Chase Watkins entered in the fourth and provided much-needed stability, recording the final out of the inning and tossing two scoreless frames to keep the Cubs within striking distance. On offense, Jefferson Rojas delivered the night’s biggest spark, lining back-to-back triples in the third and fifth innings. Reginald Preciado added a solo home run in the sixth to bring the Cubs within five at 8–3. Reivaj Garcia chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while Ivan Brethowr shined in the field, making a pair of standout defensive plays in consecutive innings. South Bend briefly held two leads early, but the River Bandits took control with a big push in the middle innings. Quad Cities out-hit the Cubs 11–8 and capitalized on key chances to seal a 10–4 win. With the loss, the Cubs drop another on the road in Iowa, despite promising individual performances from their young core.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
South Bend Cubs’ Early Lead Slips Away in Eighth-Inning Collapse The South Bend Cubs looked to end their five-game losing streak against the West Michigan Whitecaps on a rainy Friday night. After a delay of an hour and 10 minutes due to weather, the Cubs came out strong. Carter Trice launched a home run to left-center field, driving in Jefferson Rojas. A few batters later, Andy Garriola followed with a two-run homer of his own, bringing in Brian Kalmer and capping off a four-run first inning to give South Bend an early 4–0 lead. Cubs starting pitcher Nick Dean delivered a solid outing, going five innings while allowing just two runs and striking out six. South Bend had an opportunity to add insurance runs in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases but came up empty. Reliever Sam Thoresen kept things in check with a clean 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half, but struggled in the eighth—allowing a run and exiting with the bases loaded. Marino Santy entered in relief but had trouble with command, hitting back-to-back batters to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs. With two outs, he issued another walk, allowing a fourth run of the inning to score. In total, the Whitecaps plated four runs in the eighth to take a 6–4 lead, erasing what had once been a comfortable cushion for the Cubs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was a season so bad that the manager made up an excuse to go to Florida to take care of his mother to get out of it early. The last vestiges of the 2008 Cubs were either leaving after or during the season. Opening Day was a bad omen for the rest of the season and a Barves rookie had a big day and has been stealing money from the Cubs ever since. Starlin Castro had a huge first game and a really good first season. One of the catchers nearly killed one of the outfielders by plunging a bat shard right into his chest. Jim Hendry made his worst ever first round pick (and that's saying something) and then after Lou Piniella quit he hired a hairless person to manage the team. A late surge under Mike Quade doomed the 2011 team because they brought him back to manage it. The guys somehow also talk about the Kane County Cougars bogus Midwest League attendance record, a Rockford TV announcer taking ball three right on the field, A League of Their Own and so, so much more including famous pinch hitters and what's Bobby Scales up to these days? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Following an eventful All-Star break, the Brewers returned to play with a 3-game series against the Dodgers and lost two of three. Things continue to go poorly for the club and the big question remains whether this is just a slump or more than that. Host Matt Pauley will do his best to answer that question and will be joined by Kyle Lobner of the Shepherd Express and TimberRattlers.com. Speaking of the Timber Rattlers, their radio broadcaster, Chris Mehring, will join the program to give an update on the players playing for the Brewers' Midwest League affiliate.
In this episode Tim and China interview and hang out with Mitch Canham. Mitch Canham burst onto the National scene as the catcher for the two time National Champion Oregon State Beavers. Back to back Champions in 2006-2007. Legendary and still head coach Pat Casey for the Beavers said Mitch was the best leader in the country. Out of college he was a first round pick by the San Diego Padres and spent 9 seasons in the minor leagues with 6 organizations and 14 different teams. Thinking the minor league life style was over this year he got a call from the Seattle Mariners to be the manager of the Clinton Lumberjacks (Single A team in the Midwest League). Here is the funny thing, Mitch has never managed or coached a game in in his life. His team goes on to win 86 games and come up one game short in the Midwest League Championship game. He's already been promoted and will be the manager for the Modesto Nuts in the 2017 season.
