This is CRACKING THE COCONUT, a not-so-average podcast that tackles taboo topics in the Filipino community with hopes to bridge the gap between Filipino-Americans and Filipinos back home in the motherland. CRACKING THE COCONUT is hosted by two millennial
For many Filipino-Americans, it is not easy to have conversations about the serious topics. In fact, sometimes we can be avoidant or passive when it comes to tackling the tough stuff. On this episode, we get down with some comments from the Cracking the Coconut TikTok page. These topics include: “Why representation is important to Filipino-Americans,” “Filipinos in the Philippines don't like being misrepresented,” “Filipino-Americans called HALF-BREEDS,” and many other touchy subjects.
This mini episode is all about The Little Mermaid -- well, more so about the amazing Halle Bailey playing Ariel and how that affects representation and the Filipino culture.Follow us on IG & FB: @crackingthecoconutFollow us on Twitter & TikTok: @crackingthecocohttp://www.crackingthecoconut.com
In this episode of Cracking the Coconut, Jasmine and Carla talk about Filipino Americans only claiming their heritage when it's convenient for them. But that's far from the truth! Filipino culture in the diaspora is alive and well, and Filipinos all over the world are doing what they can to stay connected to their culture, despite assimilation. It seems like #Filipinos outside of the Philippines are always having to "prove" their Filipinoness to mainland Filipinos. Whether it's speaking a full convo in Tagalog, or being quizzed on geography, #Fil-Ams are constantly being questioned by their own community. It f*cking sucks. Website: crackingthecoconut.com

In the SEASON FINALE of "Cracking the Coconut," we do things a little different. This episode's topic? EVERYTHING! We pull topics out of a coconut and shoot the sh*t. From sex, our most daring adventures, and answering the tough question: is a hotdog a sandwich, episode 10 takes some fun twists and turns. We also do a little mukbang and indulge on a vegan "Hawaiian" plate.
Filipinos have many traditions. From “blessing” their elders, wearing polka dots on New Years Eve, and even sending money back home, Filipinos are unique in how they celebrate their FIlipinoness. And honestly, we're here for all of it.Visit us at on IG and FB @crackingthecoconut as well as Twitter and TikTok @crackingthecocoAlso, check us out on our website at www.crackingthecoconut.com
As kids, our parents, grandparents, and any elder would tell us universal ideas and pass them off as truths. Some ideas were harmless and are now comical to think about, while others were toxic and were the mind bombs that completely shifted our perspectives. In episode 8 of “CRACKING THE COCONUT,” we talk all about the silly and serious things our elders have told us growing up.Episode Blog:Follow us on IG & Facebook @crackingthecoconutTwitter & TikTok @crackingthecoco
In episode 7 of “CRACKING THE COCONUT” we decided to switch up the tempo with a topic that's near and dear to our hearts, and a whole lot of fun! With over 13 years combined working in the entertainment industry, we've attained priceless experience, learned many lessons and gained countless memories. We've worked with top A-list artists like Selena Gomez, BTS, and H.E.R. Filipino-Americans can be scarce in the entertainment industry -- both in front of the camera and behind. But if it weren't for following our own ambitions, instead of what our families wanted, we wouldn't have found ourselves in the middle of some magical moments.Episode Blog: http://www.crackingthecoconut.com/theblog/episode-7-working-in-the-entertainment-industry-through-fil-am-eyesFollow us on IG & FB @crackingthecoconut as well as TikTok and Twitter @crackingthecoco
In episode 6 of “CRACKING THE COCONUT” we explore the theory of the #crabmentality and how it creates a narrative of #Filipino vs Filipino. For a community that is known for their warm welcomes, hospitality and their famous, “Hello, Mamsir!” greeting, why are Filipinos so selective on the individuals and groups they choose to support?Episode Info: https://www.crackingthecoconut.com/theblog/episode-6-filipino-vs-filipinoIG & FB: @crackingthecoconutTwitter & TikTok: @crackingthecoco
In episode 5 of “CRACKING THE COCONUT” we dive into skin — specifically brown skin, and how it is frowned upon in the Filipino community. There is a classist idea that dark skin equates to being poor or disadvantaged because one is outside working in the fields all day, while being light-skinned equates to lux, money, and power. In the Philippines, skin color is used as a form of monopoly that has the possibility to open doors and opportunities, depending on how light one's skin is. Maybe this is why Filipino parents try to lighten their children's skin? So they are able to reap all the possibilities and make a great life for themselves.Blog Post: https://www.crackingthecoconut.com/theblog/episode-5-brown-is-beautifulFollow Cracking the Coconut:IG & FB: @crackingthecoconutTwitter & TikTok: @crackingthecoco
Growing up Filipino-American has its ups and downs. In episode 4 of CRACKING THE COCONUT, Carla Jay and Jasmine dive into some crazy expectations they experienced such as, no dating till after schooling was accomplished. While these experiences may just be over-protective Filipino parents doing their best to raise kids in America, sometimes these expectations come with detrimental side effects.Follow Cracking the Coconut on the following social platforms:FB & IG: @crackingthecoconutTwitter & TikTok: @crackingthecocoOfficial Website: http://www.crackingthecoconut.com
Getting scammed f*cking sucks, and we never think we'd fall victim to trickery and deception. The pandemic was the start of a challenging time for many, and getting scammed thousands of dollars was the last thing Jasmine thought would end up on her 2020 bingo card. Insert Barkada 2020, where 4 white men from Washington, D.C., name their establishment “Barkada” which is an endearing term for Filipinos that refers to their closest friends and companions. To some Filipino-Americans, HELL NO! However to older generation Filipinos and Filipinos back in the motherland, this is viewed as brilliant representation.
