It's kind of astonishing, really, that kids ever learn words. Each one poses a little riddle. Does this sound string refer to a person? A category of things? Or maybe some other feature of the blooming, buzzing world? And yet word learning happens. In fact, we now know it begins earlier in infancy than we realized. And we now know, further, that dogs (or at least some dogs) understand words as well. So how does this happen? What do babies and dogs really know about words? And how might we go about figuring this all out? My guests today are Dr. Elika Bergelson and Dr. Claudia Fugazza. Elika is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, where her lab studies how infants learn language. Claudia is a Researcher at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, where she and her collaborators study dogs who are especially gifted word learners. In this conversation, Elika, Claudia, and I talk about the thorny question of what it means to understand a word—and whether there are different degrees or kinds of understanding. We consider the challenges posed by different types of words—by nouns, by names, by verbs, by function words, size terms, and more. We discuss why it is that some dogs are so good at learning words, and why infants of a certain age seem to get so much better at it. We talk about learning in different contexts and situations. And we circle the question of how different word learning really is in dogs and babies. Alright friends, before we get to it, one tiny ask: If you've been enjoying Many Minds, you can help us grow by leaving a review or comment or a rating, or by sharing us with a friend or colleague. We would greatly appreciate the support! Without further ado, on to my interview with Claudia Fugazza and Elika Bergelson. Enjoy! The thing about art is that it's never finished. It's a fact that presents a fundamental challenge: you have to decide to let go. To accept imperfection. To move on or to live inside the maze of one project your entire life.Fog Chaser's song a month project addresses this challenge directly. His commitment to deadlines and accountability to himself resulted in four, 12-song volumes completed in succession over the past four years. Now, with thousands of subscribers waiting for Volume 5 he faces another form of the same question. Does he repeat the cycle expected by his audience or change directions? We make music wanting it to be heard, but what do we do once we're heard? Fog Chaser acknowledges the privilege and gratitude for the audience and the pressure that accompanies attention. He reminds us that the attention arrived because he began by creating something deeply personal and meaningful to him.The point is to create and to gift and then repeat. Because the work is never done.ProducerHead is a publication for independent music producers. For episode 50 of B-Side Breakdown, Shi from Scarboro breaks down “Chaser,” a song rooted in political exhaustion, fake empathy, and the disconnect between what people say they believe and what they're willing to act on.Shi talks openly about working in politics and nonprofit advocacy, running for Congress from the left, and eventually walking away after years of watching corporate influence hollow out meaningful change. The conversation moves beyond the song itself into hot-take culture, online outrage, and the frustration of seeing powerful words rarely materialize into pressure where it could actually create change. But underneath all of it is something more personal — exhaustion, apathy, recovery, and trying to rebuild a sense of purpose after hitting a breaking point. The episode also digs into the making of Scarboro's new record Hate Season, written after Shi left the New York State Senate and began working through a difficult period of mental health struggles and healing. What came out of that time became one of the band's most collaborative and emotionally direct records yet.Follow Scarboro:scarboro.bandcamp.cominstagram.com/scarboropunx Sell The Heart Records:https://www.selltheheartrecords.com/WTF Records:https://wtfrecords.eu/Thanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.bsidebreakdown.com #Scarboro #Chaser #HardcorePunk #PunkRock #NYCHardcore #SellTheHeartRecords #DIYpunk #PunkPodcast #BSideBreakdown #MelodicHardcore #IndependentMusic #MusicPodcast #PunkCommunity #NewMusic

Witnessing the Northern Lights is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences on the planet, and in today's interview episode we're going to hear what it feels like to stand beneath them - a cascade of color raining down from the sky all around you. In Norse mythology the Aurora were the armour of the Valkyries. The Inuit saw spirits playing in the sky. The Sami hid indoors in fear. And science has its own story too, because what we are really witnessing is the energy of the sun itself, travelling 93 million miles across space, and exploding into color in our atmosphere. We may now be able to explain them scientifically, but their effect on us is unchanged. This is a story about the science of solar winds and magnetic fields, the mythology of ancient cultures who saw gods and fire in the sky, and the art of chasing something wild, unpredictable and utterly mesmerizing. Taking us deeper into that experience is Tom Kerss, one of the world's leading Aurora experts. Tom's passion for the Aurora is infectious, his knowledge extraordinary, and his way of describing what you see in that sky inspiring and poetic.FIND OUT MOREProduced in collaboration with Lonely Planet: lonelyplanet.com Tom Kerss is one of the world's leading Aurora experts and the onboard Aurora guide for expedition cruise company Hurtigruten. Welcome to Last Call, a look at the biggest stories Jim and Greg covered over the past week on the 3 Martini Lunch. This week, they discuss the resignation of President Trump's National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent, the childen of top Iranian officials teaching at American colleges and universities. and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul begging rich people who fled he state to come back so she can tax them again.First, they react to National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent stepping down and alleging that President Trump was pushed into war with Iran by Israel. Jim explains why this resignation and the accusations behind it go far beyond a typical policy disagreement.Next, they react with disbelief to reports that children of senior Iranian regime figures are living in the United States and teaching at American colleges and universities. On today's episode, host Kate Lindsay is joined by Slate staff writer Nadira Goffe to answer the question everyone is asking since he appeared in a viral moment from the Oscars' red carpet: Who TF is Jake Shane? The TikTokker has a podcast, an upcoming Hulu show, and a role at a candy company, but is best known for just being around famous people. He insists he's not a journalist, but he's not quite a celebrity himself, either. Is this our first “professional clout-chaser” (non-derogatory)?This podcast is produced by Vic Whitley-Berry, Daisy Rosario, and Kate Lindsay. Hosted on Acast.
