The Next Round: Jeff reversed fatty liver disease

It was a health scare that pushed Jeff out of his comfort zone. He was diagnosed with a fatty liver at 29.Now he's reversed fatty liver disease and gained an amazing and active personal life.Welcome to the Next Round, when things that scare you have the potential to improve your life in ways you never imagined. Your next round can be more than getting better physically, it can help you create a new point of difference.Meet Jeff Smith, he works in finance by day, a notoriously boozy industry, but in his spare time he now performs improv on stage, jumps into icy fjords, learnt his mother tongue Tagalog, and has even launched a podcast. Most importantly he has reversed a health condition that could have killed him. When Jeff changed his drinking habits, he didn't just remove something from his life- he unlocked a more exciting life and imporved his health to boot!A health scare in his late twenties pushed him to re-evaluate how alcohol fit into his lifestyle. What followed wasn't just abstinence – it was expansion. From improv stages to ecstatic dance and even launching his own podcast, Jeff's life now pulses with more energy, creativity, and meaning than ever before.“It's just such a lazy option to go down the route of the pub when there's so many other things.” The catalyst was a diagnosis: fatty liver. At just 29, Jeff found himself dealing with elevated liver enzymes, fatigue, and unpleasant stomach issues. His drinking wasn't daily, but it was intense – classic binge behavior.“I reached a point where I didn't feel booze was doing anything anymore… I just didn't like that hangover slash low-energy feeling.”The health wake-up call forced him to stop. Cold. But instead of spiraling, he got curious.“You end up having much more free time because I wasn't low energy and didn't feel hungover… and that just made me think, gosh, push yourself out your comfort zone.”His first discovery? A run club that served matcha instead of beer. That led to Club Soda events, then the Social Wellness Club, and eventually a plunge into activities he never imagined himself doing. Like ecstatic dance.“What an amazing way to just be free… you could be any sort of background. And I just thought, this is so damn cool.”Even more surprising for an introvert in the corporate finance world? Improv.“Try improv. That would have scared the living daylights out of me a year and a bit ago… but I've pushed myself out the comfort zone.”Jeff also co-created a podcast with a university friend, “The English Footy Podcast.” With his evenings no longer lost to wine or recovery, he had time and clarity for passion projects. He even began learning Tagalog – his mother's language – fulfilling a long-held desire to connect more deeply with his heritage. But perhaps the most meaningful change came from social confidence.“I just feel more confident in socialising alcohol free and not feeling embarrassed. Just feeling positive about that choice.”Navigating the finance world – a bastion of long-standing drinking culture – hasn't been easy. Jeff still finds pressure in client meetings and among old university friends who knew him as a drinker. But with confidence and a kombucha in hand, he's learned to draw his own line.“It's been a bit of a re-education for some colleagues… but actFind Club Soda:The Club Soda Tasting Room is at 39 Drury Lane, London, WC2B 5RRFind us on Instagram

Between Worlds: How artist Julius Manapul Made Art Their Home

Julius Manapul transforms the pain of displacement into powerful art that challenges colonial structures and celebrates queer identity. As a Filipinx immigrant who arrived in Canada in the 90s, Manapul found themselves caught between languages and cultures—a displacement that led them to embrace visual communication as a universal language transcending verbal barriers.Manapul's multimedia practice spans sculpture, installation, performance, and experimental film, but perhaps most striking is their transformation of pornographic imagery into intricate butterfly patterns. These works initially attract viewers with their beauty before challenging them with the revelation of their source material. "It's fascinating how the work never changed," Manapul observes. "It's people's perspective that changed." This moment of realisation become a thread Manapul continually explores in their art and teaching practice as an Assistant Professor at OCAD University. Their most recent exhibition "Sila/Siya/Ako" (they, them, me in Tagalog) examines the connections between religion, colonisation in the Philippines and the racism experienced within queer spaces. Manapul juxtaposes Catholic symbolism with gay club music, highlighting how both institutions—ostensibly places of belonging—often alienate those who don't conform to dominant ideals. The exhibition's mannequins, adorned with replicas of King Philip's armour crafted from gay porn images and whitewashing products, confront viewers with the ongoing effects of colonisation in contemporary Filipino culture.Manapul shares career triumphs and how they overcame barriers coming up in Toronto's art scene. When traditional gallery spaces initially rejected Manapul's work, they strategically self-funded exhibitions and submitted to international calls—finding recognition in Europe before gaining traction in Canada. This resourcefulness reflects their powerful advice to emerging artists: "If there's no space for you at the table, make that space." Now an Assistant Professor at OCAD University, Manapul creates the representation they lacked growing up, proving that persistence and connection are essential tools for artistic success.Want to explore more transformative art that challenges cultural boundaries? Welcome back to another season of Braaains. We're so excited to start the season with a fantastic interview with filmmakers, Thea Loo and Jeremiah Reyes, about Thea's latest documentary, INAY With the desire to help answer unresolved questions and heal lingering wounds, INAY (MAMA) investigates the flawed immigration pathways between the Philippines and Canada that kept so many Filipino children from their mothers. Inay, which means “mama” in Tagalog, is an intimate and personal look at the experiences and trauma endured by many Filipino Canadians. In the film, Thea and her husband Jeremiah, who is also the film's Director of Photography, explore the intersections of mental health and migrant labour and the effects that continue to be felt years later. Through intimate conversations, this self-reflexive documentary aims to bridge the silences and disconnect between the first and second generations of the Filipino community. Today's conversation is about their experiences making this intimate film and the impact it had on how they view mental health today. 62: BREAKING DAWN | Hanan, the Tagalog Goddess of the DawnIt's a new day, a new episode, and finally time to talk about Hanan, the long-overdue Tagalog goddess of dawn! She's been there all along, ushering in the sunrise, bringing in the harvest, and very recently being recruited as the unofficial goddess of the New Year. But why do we know so little about her?Join us as we uncover Hanan's origins, from her celestial family (yes, she's sisters with Mayari and Tala) to her often-overlooked role in Philippine mythology. We take a deep dive into the myth where she blinds the Bakunawa in a cosmic battle to save the moon, a tale that somehow feels like The Nutcracker meets True Blood. We also discuss how modern Filipinos have unofficially assigned her the job of goddess of fresh starts, why her PR team (if she had one) is seriously slacking, and how this forgotten dawn deity deserves a Sailor Moon-style transformation sequence (artists, we need you on this). ✨ Start your day with us, a quiz, and a whole lot of mythological nerding out.—The Gods Must Be Crazy is a podcast on Philippine Mythology hosted by friends Anama Dimapilis and Ice Lacsamana, avid mythology nerds and semi-professional gossips. Amielynn Abellera talks making the decision to switch from doctor to actor, her breakout role in "The Pitt", and shares the audition that got her the role! About Amielynn: Amielynn Abellera is a Filipino American actress whose journey from a suburban upbringing in Stockton, California, to the bright lights of television and film is marked by resilience, passion, and an ever-burning creative flame. Born to immigrant parents who worked as medical professionals, Amielynn grew up surrounded by a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the arts. Her parents' love for theater, film, and travel exposed her to a world of storytelling, planting the seeds of her future career. Despite a natural inclination toward the arts, Amielynn initially pursued a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology at Santa Clara University. However, her passion for performance proved undeniable, leading her to earn a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and fully commit to acting. Since then, she has built a dynamic career spanning television, film, and voice acting. She has guest-starred in hit series such as Bosch: Legacy, Shrinking, The Cleaning Lady, and NCIS, bringing authenticity and nuance to every role. One of her most significant moments came on The Cleaning Lady, where she portrayed a Tagalog-speaking head surgeon in Manila—a role that deepened her connection to her Filipino heritage. She took on the challenge of learning and perfecting her lines with the help of her mother, embracing the responsibility of representing her culture on screen. In 2025, Amielynn stepped into her most high-profile role yet as Perlah Alawi in Max's highly anticipated medical drama The Pitt. As a seasoned nurse working in the high-stakes ER alongside Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby, her character embodies the resilience and expertise that define frontline healthcare professionals. Beyond television, Amielynn will return to the stage in HIDE & HIDE at Skylight Theatre. In this play, she will portray Constanza, an undocumented Filipino immigrant navigating survival and identity in 1980s Los Angeles. Theater remains essential to her artistic journey, offering a space for raw, immediate storytelling. Amielynn is passionate about representation in media and continuously strives to bring depth, complexity, and authenticity to her roles. She is proud to have endured the unpredictable rollercoaster of an acting career and maintained her love for the craft despite its challenges. Off-screen, she is a devoted partner and a loving mother to their daughter, Sampaguita, named after both the national flower of the Philippines and a character that holds special meaning in her theatrical career. “AI shouldn't erase languages—it should amplify them.” – Jean-Louis Quéguiner (JL), CEO of Gladia In a world where AI-driven communication tools are shaping industries, Gladia is setting a new standard in multilingual, real-time speech recognition. In this episode of Technology Reseller News, Doug Green interviews Jean-Louis Quéguiner (JL), CEO of Gladia, to discuss how their automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology is not only solving technical challenges but also protecting and amplifying underrepresented languages. Bridging the AI Divide in Speech Recognition Gladia is not just another transcription company. It is the only ASR provider capable of real-time, multilingual transcription with low latency, supporting over 100 languages—including accents, dialects, and code-switching. Key Differentiators: High-Accuracy Transcription Across 100+ Languages – Handles everything from English and Spanish to Tagalog and Zulu Real-Time Code-Switching – Seamlessly processes multiple languages in a single conversation Bias-Free AI – Ensures equitable representation for underserved languages As JL explains, many AI tools ignore so-called “niche” languages, despite their vast number of speakers. With 1.5 billion people in India and 120 million Tagalog speakers, Gladia is filling a critical gap in global communication. AI and the Future of Contact Centers Gladia's speech AI technology is already being integrated into call centers, CCaaS platforms, and voice AI agents to: Improve real-time CX with hyper-accurate transcription & sentiment analysis Expand global market reach by enabling companies to support more languages Enable AI-powered call automation while maintaining human oversight JL emphasizes that AI voice agents are evolving rapidly—but rather than replacing human interaction, they should work alongside contact center professionals. In the next five years, call center roles will shift from volume-based operations to high-skill, high-quality customer interactions. Expanding into the U.S.: Building the Right Partnerships As Gladia expands its footprint in North America, the company is actively looking for: Channel partners in cloud communications Technology integrations with CCaaS and AI-powered platforms Enterprises looking to enhance multilingual CX JL himself is relocating to New York to foster relationships and drive business development in the U.S. market. rWotD Episode 2843: Philippine hanging parrot Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Friday, 14 February 2025 is Philippine hanging parrot. The Philippine hanging parrot (Loriculus philippensis), also commonly known as the colasisi from its local Tagalog name "kulasisi", is a small psittaculid parrot species endemic to the Philippines. It includes about eleven subspecies, at least one of which might represent a distinct species, although further research is needed. While it is listed as Least Concern in IUCN, some subspecies, such as L. p. chyrsonotus of Cebu and L. p. siquijorensis of Siquijor, may already be extinct. The species is threatened by habitat loss, but a bigger threat is trapping for the illegal wildlife trade; wild-caught birds are often sold as pets in streets and online selling groups.Philippine hanging parrots are mainly green with areas of red, orange, yellow, and blue on the head and breast varying between subspecies. Males have a red breast patch, except for the population living on Camiguin, where both males and females (like females of the other subspecies) lack red on the breast. They make nests in tree holes and, unusually for a parrot, the female takes nesting material back to the nest. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:38 UTC on Friday, 14 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Philippine hanging parrot on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ayanda.

In a book that pulls together both sides of the Pacific, Bundok: A Hinterland History of Filipino America (UNC Press, 2023) asks the question: what if we look at Filipino history not from the cities or the imperial metropoles, but from the mountains and the countryside? Or put another way, from the "bundok," the Tagalog word for "mountain" which American soliders in the late 19th century would come to use as a catachall for the places they found themselves fighting imperial wars. In Bundok, NYU history and FIlipino Studies professor Adrian De Leon tracks both the movement of European and American colonizers into the archipeligo, as well as how people and images moved beyond the islands and into the wider Pacific world, and how these pictures and these emigres shaped ideas about civilization, savagery, and the nature of Filipine identity itself. In a book that traces pathways from the mountains of Luzon to the mountains of South Dakota, De Leon demonstrates how the American West has always been a transnational space.
