When we really take a moment to step back and think, it's easy to agree that Jesus had brown skin because he was from the Middle East. If that's the case, why is Christ so often depicted as white with light skin, hair, and eyes? In this episode we uncover the roots of white Jesus, explain the impact this depiction has made on us and our communities, and discuss why it's important to use more accurate depictions of Christ in your home. It's hot hot hot almost anywhere you go. With record heat baking the United States and Europe, during UV Safety Month, we felt that a discussion about skin cancer in Black people was vital. Yes, our melanin is more than just beautiful – it provides protection. However, the amount of protection it gives us from the sweltering sun is not enough to hit the beach without sufficient sunscreen. While Black people are less likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer, we are more likely to die from it due to late detection. In this episode, host Natasha Phelps explains this health disparity further. She'll tell you why it's detected so late in Black people, where melanoma spots often appear on Black skin, and how to stay safe this summer. Have fun, be safe, and the next time you hear someone say “Black people can't get sunburned,” tell them to listen to this episode of Black Body Health: The Podcast. Mario Ybarra, Jr., is a visual and performance artist, an educator and an activist who combines street culture with fine art in order to produce what he calls “contemporary art that is filtered through a Mexican American experience in Los Angeles.” Mario has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, ICA Boston, LACMA, MOCA Detroit, the Tate and the Whitney Biennial, among others. He was a featured speaker at the Creative Summit in New York, and Art Pace San Antonio and has taught at Williams College, UCLA, Otis, CalArts, Skowhegan and the Alternative School. His work with Slanguage studio, a project Mario founded with his partner Karla Diaz 20 years ago, has been an influential and oftentimes the sole provider of arts in his community. Slanguage has been based out of an old bakery shop in Wilmington Ca, out of a warehouse in Long beach Ca, out of LAX art in Hollywood, and has seen many changes and iterations. What does not change is a lifetime commitment to their community with contribution to the careers of many young artists, curators and organizers practicing in the artworld and affecting change today. Dr. E.J.R. David the author of “Brown Skin, White Minds,” argues that Filipinos and Filipino-Americans live with colonial mentality, a specific form of internalized oppression where individuals regard anything of their heritage as inferior to their colonizers. In his book, Dr. David integrates research and history to examine the psychological impact of Spanish and American colonialism in the Philippines. His research suggests that since the Philippines was colonized by Spain for over 300 years and then another 48 years by the US, Filipinos have internalized the belief that they are inferior, and most interestingly, he argues that this colonial mentality transcends generations.
