    DEHYDRATION & HAIR LOSS

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2021 7:47

Hair is an important part of our body, along with skin and nails. Hair roots are situated inside the scalp so it requires proper nutrition to survive. Water is a key nutrient for the body and hair. Hair needs lubrication inside and out. Water hydrates our body, regulates our circulatory system and lubricates our hair follicles. (Water is the key source of minerals which are the most important nutrients for hair.) This, in turn, stimulates hair growth. If there is an insufficient supply of water to the follicles, it will result in hair becoming dull, lifeless, dry, rough brittle and break easily. Thus, one of the main side effects of dehydration on hair is hair loss ultimately. Let us understand this further. Hair is the second-fastest-growing organ after bone marrow. It has a 4 to 6-year life span. It has its own life cycle – grows, rests and then falls. Hair fall can happen in two ways, either by shedding or in breakages. Hair sheds from the roots and it breaks off anywhere along the hair strand. Dehydration can cause this shedding and breakage at an accelerated pace, which can affect the length and thickness of the hair. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talkhair/message

Dandruff (pityriasis capitis, seborrheic dermatitis confined to the scalp) is a disease that has been around for centuries despite several treatment options. Almost every day new players are entering the market with various antidandruff products, perhaps due to an increase in the incidence of dandruff all over the world. Interestingly, clinicians, especially dermatologists, gave little attention to this problem. At the end, the dandruff sufferer is puzzled by the array of antidandruff products with varied claims entering the market day by day. Why have we not achieved complete treatment success against dandruff? Is dandruff a disease or disorder? It seems that our understanding about dandruff perfectly fits into the famous saying of Albert Einstein, “as the area of light increases, so does the circumferences of darkness.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talkhair/message

    GASTROINSTESTINAL TRACT & ALOPECIA

This review aims to raise the potential of the modern society's impact on gut integrity often leading to increased intestinal permeability, as a cause or driver of Alopecia Areata (AA) in genetically susceptible people. With the increasing rate of T cell-driven autoimmunity, we hypothesize that there is a common root cause of these diseases that originates from chronic inflammation, and that the gut is the most commonly exposed area with our modern lifestyle. Areas covered: We will discuss the complexity in the induction of AA and its potential link to increased intestinal permeability. Our main focus will be on the gut microbiome and mechanisms involved in the interplay with the immune system that may lead to local and/or peripheral inflammation and finally, tissue destruction. Expert opinion: We have seen a link between AA and a dysfunctional gastrointestinal system which raised the hypothesis that an underlying intestinal inflammation drives the priming and dysregulation of immune cells that lead to hair follicle destruction. While it is still important to resolve local inflammation and restore the IP around the hair follicles, we believe that the root cause needs to be eradicated by long-term interventions to extinguish the fire driving the disease. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talkhair/message

Hair loss has many causes, and it can affect adults and children of all genders. Hair loss isn't only caused by male-pattern baldness. It can also be caused by a lack of nutrients. When you don't have enough iron, your body can't produce the hemoglobin in your blood. Hemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells in your body, including the cells that stimulate hair growth. With treatment, you can help reverse both the iron deficiency and the hair loss. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talkhair/message
