DSA organiser and friend of the show Noah returns to talk about resisting ICE in Los Angeles, and the consequences of that ongoing mobilisation of fascist paramilitaries. "It's Not Your Job to Like Me, It's Mine." Byron Katie The need to people please is our discussion for this week's Cool Topics Series. Are you a people pleaser? Most of us will answer yes. We say yes before thinking about our own needs. We put everyone else above us on our list of priorities. We often seek acceptance in people we shouldn't and we worry about hurting the feeling of others who do not reciprocate that. We are looking for acceptance, love and safety. Yet, all those things we can find within ourselves. We don't need to seek outside approval. We should also be able to set healthy boundaries without guilt. Your time and energy are invaluable, especially in midlife and beyond. Don't you agree? Ever wonder how you'll ever stop people-pleasing and say yes to yourself instead? This episode is for you! Set small boundaries first. Start with low-stakes situations to practice saying no or expressing your preferences. For example, choosing the restaurant when asked, or declining a small favor when you're genuinely busy. These smaller moments build your confidence for bigger boundary-setting situations.Pause before automatically agreeing. When someone asks something of you, try responding with "Let me check my schedule and get back to you" or "I need to think about that." This brief delay gives you space to consider what you actually want to do rather than reflexively saying yes to avoid disappointing someone.Remember that disappointment isn't dangerous. People-pleasers often fear others' negative reactions, but someone being temporarily disappointed or mildly upset doesn't mean you've done something wrong or that the relationship is in jeopardy. Most healthy relationships can handle occasional "no" responses, and those that can't may need reevaluation.Notice your internal warning signs. Pay attention to feelings of resentment, exhaustion, or anxiety that often accompany over-committing. These emotions are signals that you're stretching yourself too thin to accommodate others. When you catch these feelings early, you can course-correct before burning out.Practice stating your needs directly. Instead of hinting or hoping others will guess what you want, try expressing yourself clearly. Say "I'd prefer to meet at 2 PM" rather than "Whatever time works for you is fine." Direct communication often leads to better outcomes and reduces the mental energy spent on trying to read between the lines. The key is building these skills gradually. People-pleasing patterns developed over time, so changing them takes patience and consistent practice. Some resources for you:Want to see how you score as a confident communicator? Tom Mills and Dan Hind talk to us about their work on what a functioning BBC might look like, and how that's less about finding the exact right political balance (any day now, surely!) and more about ownership structure and material factors. Let's explore the root causes behind frequent childhood illness and how we can gently build stronger immunity together. This week on the Natural Super Kids Podcast, we're talking about something so many parents ask us about: Why does my child keep getting sick? If you feel like you're constantly managing coughs, colds, and round-the-clock sniffles, you're not alone — and there is something we can do about it.In this episode, we're sharing a naturopathic perspective on what might be happening underneath repeat infections and how we can support our kids' immune systems in a more thoughtful, long-term way without panic or pressure. Here's what we cover:What nutrient deficiencies (like iron, zinc, and vitamin D) could be quietly weakening our child's immune response. The role of dairy sensitivity in triggering recurring inflammation and infections. Why gut microbiome diversity is a game-changer when it comes to immune resilience — and the simple ways we can nurture it with food and lifestyle. How we can step away from the cycle of medications and antibiotics, and lean into nourishment, connection, and empowered decision-making.Simple, food-first strategies you can try at home plus when it's time to get extra support.

Dan Sindel is truly a “unique” and “one of a kind” artist like no other out there in music land. Dan's songwriting features a multi-layered approach to recording guitars and vocals that integrates myriads of styles and genres into a hard rocking experience streamlined for mass appeal. Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is Dan's debut (5 song) EP and features the radio friendly tracks; STEPPING STONE, RULE THE WORLD and ALL DUE REPSECT as well as two “6 minute deep cut” tracks; EDGE OF ETERNITY and SAY GOODBYE which would satisfy anyone with a love for classic rock /progressive hard rock/heavy metal with their technical rhythmic changes, orchestrated guitars and solid vocal production. The Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/guitarist takes his musical upbringing of 60's and 70's pop songs and classic rock, 80's-90's metal and all things current and mixes up slightly atypical artists (think: Alice in Chains meet The Byrds or perhaps the aggression of Metallica infused with Blue Oyster Cult, The BEATLES or ELO) to create those unique melodies and harmonies. Dan says, “To me, the best parts of a song are the hooks and melodies, whether vocal or instrumental they have to catch the listener's ear and be extraordinarily memorable.”As a survivor of the legendary 80's LA Heavy Metal scene, Dan has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the rock and metal music world (ACCEPT, SAXON, KING DIAMOND, RACER X, WENDY O. WILLIAMS, ARMORED SAINT, METAL CHURCH, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, GRIM REAPER, HED-PE, MUSHROOMHEAD and HELMET being but a few) but he'd rather not be looked at as “just a metal guy” as he refuses to be typecast and limited by musical genre.“Dan states: “It is the responsibility of a true artist to find his own voice and represent the thoughts and feelings that one has and to share it in a way that hopefully does not simply mirror someone else's work, to capture the spirit and intent of the artists vision is the essence of art itself.”Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is absolute proof that bringing influences from several different musical genres can co-exist in one finely tuned package and is available on all popular streaming platforms as well as his accompaniment videos on Youtube.APPLE MUSIC: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/dan-sindel/261257155SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/artist/12JOM4gAm4nuaXD8GXLW3xAMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/artists/B0019DMEM4/dan-sindelYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/@halipinoWWW: http://dansindel.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

This was originally aired in 2023. Ceara Conway is an Irish contemporary vocalist and visual artist, and this episode features music from her album CAOIN as well as excerpts from some of her other projects. I find Ceara's curiosity about so many important topics around arts and culture really inspiring and this conversation circled around to her explorations of different languages and cultures as well as her rootedness as an Irish speaker. She has had many interesting commissions dealing with history, illness, grief, and the natural world. She also spoke to me about some of her roles working with the Clare Arts office with artists with disabilities, how she started her career as a glassblower in Rome and how her upbringing has helped her navigate the world as a freelance artist. The Nintendo Switch 2 is fast approaching, so we decided to take one last look at the original Nintendo Switch - the greatest video game of all time! OK maybe I'm going a bit overboard with that last statement, but the Switch has been wildly successful and it's life cycle coming to an end is a big event. First, we take a trip back to the launch and share our thoughts on the early lineup of games and our launch day experiences. Then we take a look at the games, the peripherals, the online service/store, and have some trivia along the way. We cap it off with games we still have in our backlog for Switch 1 while talking about our plans to pickup or pass Switch 2.So grab your joy-cons...no not that one - it's got drift. No not that one either. You know what, how about you grab the pro controller instead and join us...as we say goodbye to Nintendo Switch!
