When Adrián Quesada first heard a song by the Peruvian band Los Pasteles Verdes on the radio, a new artistic world began to take shape. That path led him to compose Boleros Psicodélicos I (2022) and, more recently, its striking follow-up, Boleros Psicodélicos II, released in 2025. During his visit to the KEXP studios in Seattle to record his Live on KEXP session, the Mexican-American musician, composer, and producer—born in the border city of Laredo, Texas—sat down with Albina Cabrera to share the songs that shaped his life. From the vinyl records he discovered during his college years in Austin, to his deep passion for hip hop, and the golden era of salsa and cumbia that inspired him to co-found Grupo Fantasma. After 21 years with implants, Jennifer has reached her limits  with the pain, scar tissue, and breasts that stretched far beyond what she ever imagined. What started as 420cc implants have grown from a D cup to triple Ds, leaving her hunched over with aching joints. At first, she considered swapping them out for smaller implants, but during her consultation, breast implant removal expert Dr. Luke Swistun reassured her that she had plenty of natural tissue to work with. Simply downsizing would mean another surgery down the road, and her own tissue could be sculpted into a beautiful, natural shape without any implants. That was all it took to change her mind and move forward with an explant with auto-augmentation. Jennifer is now looking forward to lighter, more natural breasts and the freedom to finally wear tube tops and spaghetti straps with confidence. With her sister Laura by her side, she shares her journey to show other women the power of being informed and choosing what feels right for their body.LinksListen to Laura's latest update on her breast augmentation, How Laura Cain Really Feels About Her Breast Implants 2 Years LaterListen to our previous episode, Happy Wife, Happy Life – A Husband's Perspective on Breast Explant SurgeryMeet San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. Luke SwistunLearn more about breast implant removalLearn from the talented plastic surgeons inside La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, the 12x winner of the San Diego's Best Union-Tribune Readers Poll, global winner of the 2020 MyFaceMyBody Best Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery Practice, and the 2025 winner of Best Cosmetic Surgery Group in San Diego Magazine's Best of San Diego Awards.Join hostess Monique Ramsey as she takes you inside LJCSC, where dreams become real. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed Connor McDavid's contract extension, Northlands Coliseum memories, some player retirements, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There still isn't much happening in Edmonton Oilers land these days, but with Connor McDavid back in town ahead of Team Canada orientation camp, the contract talk has already started to pick back up. Not only did McDavid talk about his potential extension today, but we also heard from Elliotte Friedman on what he expects the timeline to look like for the captain's renewal. Changing gears, I also spent a few minutes talking about the upcoming Rexall Place/Northlands Coliseum demolition that is scheduled for 2026 and how it's going to be sad to see the old barn get knocked down, even though we haven't been there in years. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as ever. The voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.

Barry and Abigail discuss Navy Blues by Sloan and sample three Canadian beers: Labatt Blue from Labatt Brewing Company, Moosehead Canadian Lager from Moosehead Breweries Limited, and Life in the Clouds from Collective Arts Brewing. The delightful can art of Life in the Clouds was designed by Joe Boyd.Navy Blues was entered into our Jukebox long ago by Paul Zawacki during our episode Bonus: A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special). He described Sloan as the Canadian Beatles, comparing One Chord to Another to the White Album (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!) and Navy Blues to Abbey Road.In preparation for this episode, Abigail listened through Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Love by The Beatles.Revolver is one of Barry's favorite Beatles albums. He compared the throat clear at the beginning of She Says What She Means to George Harrison's counting on Taxman, the opening track of Revolver.Barry then compared C'mon C'mon to Good Day Sunshine, also off Revolver.…He then compared Iggy & Angus to The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) by The Banana Splits.…Then, collectively, they compared Sinking Ships to Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney.Barry "complained" about the sirens in Money City Maniacs, which reminded Abigail of the sounds of cars whizzing by underlying Lonely Boy by The Black Keys.Abigail had confusion over Seems So Heavy, which by title alone seems to be a rip-off of/tribute to I Want You (She's So Heavy) by The Beatles. Later, she would compare the opening couple of notes of Suppose They Close the Door to the opening couple of notes of I Want You (She's So Heavy).Abigail shared that one of the best meals she ever ate was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from where Sloan originated. She ate sea-cuterie at Waterfront Warehouse.Barry compared the piano in Chester the Molester to the piano in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. We briefly discussed James Taylor's eponymous debut album, which was released on The Beatles' Apple Records (the first non-British artist on the label), was recorded at Trident Studios concurrently with the White Album, and features Paul McCartney and George Harrison on bass guitar and backing vocals, respectively! But Barry had part of the story backward - Something in the Way She Moves inspired the opening line of Harrison's Something, not the other way around. (Coincidentally, Taylor has said he had meant for the song to be called “I Feel Fine,” but that title had already been taken by The Beatles!) We played a little bit of the version of Carolina In My Mind that appears on this debut album - the version with members of The Beatles included. Later, Abigail mentioned that she kept hearing How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by James Taylor in I Wanna Thank You.Our word association around “ways to get even” from Suppose They Close the Door led us to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon and 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train. We should have also added Ways to Hang On by The Stick Arounds! Our next Jukebox episode will be 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Alinor Mezinord.Up next… Teenage Dream by Katy PerryJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I explore AWS's bold new approach to eliminating AI hallucinations using automated reasoning and formal logic.Highlights00:04 — AWS has announced that automated reasoning checks, a new Amazon Bedrock guardrails policy, are now generally available. In a blog post, AWS's Chief Evangelist (EMEA), Danilo Poccia said that: "Automated reasoning checks help you validate the accuracy of content generated by foundation models against domain knowledge. This can help prevent factual errors due to AI hallucinations."00:38 —The policy uses mathematical logic and formal verification techniques to validate accuracy. The biggest takeaway from this news is AWS's approach differs dramatically from probabilistic reasoning methods. Instead, automated reasoning checks provide 99% verification accuracy.01:10 — This means that the new policy is significantly more reliable in ensuring factual accuracy than traditional methods. The issue of hallucinations was a significant concern when generative AI first emerged. The problems associated with non-factual content are becoming increasingly damaging. This new approach represents an important leap forward. Visit Cloud Wars for more.

Let it Go: a Riff on Performance Reviews

Crina and Kirsten Get to Work

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2025 40:45

The review process is in general not great.  Research says only 21% of your review reflects your actual performance. The other 79%? Reviewer preferences, interpretation differences, and who happened to see you shine—or not. One person's “excellent communicator” is another's “talks too much at meetings.”   Welcome to the land of subjectivity. And let's not forget the recency bias. Most of us can't remember what we had for lunch last week, let alone your Q1 wins. Performance reviews often rely heavily on the last six weeks—which means your January brilliance is now irrelevant. We start with a flawed process that can feel deeply personal, which as we know is a bad mix for our ease, meaning and joy at work. So what can we do? Before the review, ask: What's expected of me? What's the goal of this review? Do you want a response? When? During the review: Listen—sometimes that's enough. Keep your cool—even if your face betrays you. Ask questions—gently, curiously. Buy time—especially if you didn't see it coming. Hunt for the helpful—what's useful, what's noise? Craft your response—thanks, questions, or a plan. If you're underperforming—own it. Ask what improvement looks like. Show don't tell—words are easy, action is powerful. Create a plan—share it, follow up, stay engaged. If you're surprised by feedback, that's probably not failure—it's probably information. Maybe your boss doesn't give real-time feedback. Maybe expectations were never clearly shared. And there are times when we can be just not plugged in and self-aware - considering why we are surprised can be very helpful. And remember: this isn't just feedback on you. It's also a window into your boss, your team, and your company. There's data in how they deliver feedback, what they notice, and what they miss. So take a breath. Accept the review as just one piece of a much bigger picture. Learn what you can. Then, let it go, Elsa. Let it go.   GOOD READS Why You Might Want to Say Goodbye to the Annual Performance Review | Working Knowledge How to Respond to a Performance Review: 9 Tips Employees Need to Know — ManageBetter (32) How to Respond Effectively During Your Performance Review: A Guide to Standing Out and Driving Growth | LinkedIn 17 Phrases To Respond to Constructive Criticism, According to Psychologists - Parade Responding to Feedback You Disagree With Performance Reviews
