Join us for an inspiring conversation with Dr. Ineke Meredith, a dynamic individual whose career has spanned from being a human surgeon to a trailblazing entrepreneur in the pet care industry. Listen in as Ineke shares her fascinating journey, starting as a general surgeon with a specialty in breast cancer, breast reconstruction, and trauma. Her medical training took her across the globe, from New Zealand to Australia, Europe, and the UK, where she experienced the profound fulfillment of saving lives. Transitioning into entrepreneurship, Ineke was inspired by her dog's battle with dermatitis to create effective skincare solutions for canines, thus founding a company that addresses this common issue. Her story is a testament to her commitment to improving the lives of both humans and animals. We also explore the contrasts between the structured, high-stakes world of medicine and the unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship. Ineke reflects on her journey in launching her company, Fur Love, which offers pet products available internationally. Her experiences in the medical field also unexpectedly led her to authorship, with a book published by Harper Collins that has touched individuals worldwide. This episode highlights the importance of maintaining perspective, appreciating health, and recognizing the humanity of patients amid the challenges of both medicine and business. In today's episode of the Naturally Nourished Podcast, we're getting up close and personal with an 8-legged creature that's probably living on your face right now (yep, really). We're diving into all things Demodex—a microscopic parasitic mite that lives in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, especially around the eyes. While most of us cohabitate peacefully with these tiny freeloaders, an overgrowth can trigger all kinds of skin and eye concerns, from blepharitis and ocular eczema to acne-like breakouts and rosacea flare-ups. We'll unpack the science behind Demodex overgrowth, how it can drive inflammation and contribute to skin conditions that often go misdiagnosed or mistreated, and what to look out for if you're dealing with stubborn rashes or redness around the eyes, nose, or cheeks. Of course, we'll also walk you through food-as-medicine strategies and functional tools—from supporting the microbiome to choosing the right topicals—to help get things back in balance. Tune in for the nitty gritty (literally) and leave empowered with new ways to support clear skin and resilient immune function from the inside out. Ever been diagnosed with stasis dermatitis? If you're dealing with swelling, redness, or relentless itchiness on your lower legs, it's not just dry skin or aging—it could be a sign of poor circulation.Stasis dermatitis is more than just a rash. If left unchecked, it can lead to painful ulcers, infections, and serious complications. It's often mistaken for cellulitis, which means unnecessary antibiotics—and in one case, a patient was hospitalized 11 times before getting the right diagnosis. And heads up—it doesn't just show up on legs. It can also affect areas like the belly and lower back where blood tends to pool.To help us unpack this overlooked condition, I'm joined by Dr. Peter Lio—a board-certified dermatologist and eczema expert. He's a Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern, Harvard-trained, and has published over 100 papers, including a textbook on integrative dermatology.Dr. Lio breaks down what stasis dermatitis is, why it's often missed, and how to spot it early. Are you struggling with a super itchy skin rash that looks like eczema? If gluten seems to be a trigger – you might be dealing with dermatitis herpetiformis!Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a rare skin rash that starts off as incredibly itchy, small blisters that eventually start to become open sores due to constant scratching. This rash is generally considered to be MORE ITCHY than eczema, and is commonly found in the creases of elbows, knees, and buttocks. What causes DH, you might ask? The answer is surprising: Gluten. Yes, dermatitis herpetiformis is a gluten rash – the skin manifestation of celiac disease. In fact, eliminating gluten from your diet and skincare is necessary to find relief.Joining me to talk about the link between gluten, dermatitis herpetiformis, and celiac disease is fan-favorite guest Dr. Peter Lio, who is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, Dr. Lio received formal training in acupuncture. Dr. Lio has written a textbook on Integrative Dermatology and has published over 100 papers. In This Episode:What is dermatitis herpetiformis (DH)?Dermatitis herpetiformis symptomsHow is this gluten rash diagnosed?Other clues that you may have dermatitis herpetiformis (e.g. altered oral health)Autoimmune conditions linked to this celiac rashCan removing gluten from your diet improve dermatitis herpetiformis symptoms?Dermatitis herpetiformis treatment optionsNutrient deficiencies associated with celiac diseaseShould you use gluten-free skincare if you have DH?Quotes“Dermatitis herpetiformis, or DH, is really an inflammatory autoimmune disease that actually results in tiny blisters, although when most patients see it, they tend to look more eczematous…It's incredibly itchy.”“[The itch] can be absolutely crazy. In this podcast, we're going to talk about dermatitis. Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin, and there are many different types. At their core, skin problems are either related to an allergy or an immune reaction. You can consider many cases of dermatitis as an over-reactive immune system. Topical and oral steroids are the most common treatments of dermatitis. They work by suppressing the immune system. Antibiotics are also commonly used to treat cases of dermatitis but often lead to a secondary infection. The superficial layer of your skin contains a multitude of microbes and acts as a barrier for your lymphatic tissue and blood vessels. These tissues are full of immune cells ready to protect you against foreign invaders. Dermatitis seems to respond positively to vitamin D. For example, vitamin D works to mitigate symptoms of contact dermatitis by lowering the histamine response. Vitamin D is the main regulator of the immune system. Skin conditions are typically worse in the winter when we get less vitamin D. They are also worse when a person is under stress. When you raise cortisol levels from stress, you deplete vitamin D. Vitamin D can decrease acne by shrinking and normalizing the sebaceous glands. This can help regulate the overproduction of oil, decreasing acne breakouts. Seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp is also known as dandruff. Vitamin D cream can help reduce dandruff. Eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, and alopecia are all related to vitamin D deficiency. Microbes involved in certain skin issues can reduce the vitamin D receptors in your skin, allowing them to survive. How does perioral dermatitis differ from other skin conditions like acne, and why is it important to make a proper distinction? So, let's dig into the world of skin health, with a focus on perioral dermatitis (PD), a skin condition characterized by red, inflammatory eruptions around the mouth. We break down the importance of tackling internal health issues like gut health, stress, and diet, emphasizing that vibrant skin comes from within. As we chat about our own experiences and share knowledge from the Clear Skin Solutions program, you will learn about the interconnectedness of the gut, brain, and skin, and how addressing stress and nutritional imbalances can lead to clearer, healthier skin. The conversation also covers vital skincare tips for managing PD, highlighting ingredients to avoid, like irritants, fragrances, and harsh chemicals, and those that can soothe inflamed skin, such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides. We advocate for a simple, nurturing skincare routine paired with a nutritious diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and omega-3s. In this episode, we discuss: Perioral Dermatitis (PD) and Its CausesDietary Triggers and Hygiene Factors Influencing PDGut Health and Its Connection to PDStress Management and Mental Health in Relation to PDSkincare Practices and Recommendations for PDThe Psychological Impact of Skin Conditions Join us on the next episode where we'll peel back the layers of the toxic components hiding in skincare products.
