Vitamin K2 (MK-7) and Coronary Artery Calcification: Insights from a 2-Year Trial: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a two-year randomized clinical trial in JAMA Cardiology from Maastricht University Medical Center reporting that daily vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7, MK-7) at 360 mcg slowed progression of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in 180 patients with confirmed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and baseline CAC 50–400 Agatston units. Compared with placebo, consistent MK-7 use was associated with 29% lower CAC progression and 42% less arterial calcium mass progression, though CAC still increased in both groups; stenosis increases were numerically lower with MK-7 but not statistically significant. Leyla notes many participants were on statins and were smokers, highlighting that statins can raise CAC by stabilizing soft plaque via calcification. The trial suggests MK-7 may slow calcification in newer plaques, may improve arterial elasticity via matrix GLA protein activation, is inexpensive and safe, but clinical event reduction remains unproven; Leyla suggests considering MK-7 (possibly 360 mcg) with vitamin D, magnesium, and dietary measures.

Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Nathan Jones, founder and CEO of Xlear, Inc.
Nathan Jones, founder and CEO of Xlear, Inc., reveals xylitol's role in supporting oral and nasal “gateway” microbiomes by selectively starving acid-producing Strep mutans rather than indiscriminately killing bacteria, and warns that harsh mouthwashes can disrupt beneficial oral bacteria linked to nitric oxide production and possibly blood pressure. Jones outlines Spry and Xlear products (gum, mints, toothpaste, mouthwash, dry-mouth “Rain,” and upcoming gummy candies, a new dental probiotic with added nutrients, and a direct-to-consumer oral bacteria test kit with pre/post tracking). He discusses diet, emphasizing sugar as a key driver of cavities and criticizing limited focus on sugar in a Surgeon General oral health report. In part two, Jones describes ongoing and planned legal actions against the FTC over shifting evidentiary standards and reputational damage, then reviews Xlear's allergy and respiratory approach via nasal hygiene, product tiers (regular, Max with quercetin, Rescue botanicals, and a decongestant), and a forthcoming ectoine-based spray to support mucus barrier integrity.

Lara Moody (iFeeder), Dr. Yuntai Hong, and Leah Wilkinson (AFIA) join the Real Science Exchange podcast to explore the growing concern around vitamin and amino acid supply chain disruptions—and their potential impact on U.S. food security. Recorded live at IPPE, this episode dives into how feed ingredient availability influences animal performance, producer profitability, and long-term resilience across the food system. The conversation opens with introductions and an overview of the iFeeder report, setting the stage for a data-driven discussion on supply chain stability and its importance to the animal feed and food industries (00:00–01:08). The panel begins by outlining the mission of iFeeder and the origin of the resiliency challenge, explaining how the organization was tasked with delivering fact-based insights to quantify supply chain risks tied to vitamins and amino acids (01:08–03:19). The discussion then traces the report's development back to COVID-19, when widespread disruptions exposed vulnerabilities in sourcing critical feed ingredients and highlighted the need for credible data to inform policymakers (03:19–04:15). As the episode progresses, the panel walks through the data collection and analysis process, describing how global trade data is translated into meaningful, species-specific insights for producers and nutritionists (04:15–07:36). This foundation reinforces the importance of evidence-based decision-making across the industry. The Role of Vitamins and Amino Acids in Animal Nutrition Attention then shifts to the essential role of vitamin and amino acid supplementation in modern animal nutrition systems (07:36–09:18). While feed ingredients provide baseline nutrients, supplementation is required to support optimal production, maintain animal health, and ensure efficient growth across species. These findings align with broader research showing that consistent access to these nutrients is critical for maintaining livestock productivity and food supply stability. [ifeeder.org] The conversation further explores global production capacity, noting that many systems are currently operating below optimal utilization levels—raising concerns about long-term supply reliability and resilience (09:18–10:33). Real-World Impacts of Supply Chain Disruptions The panel then dives into the real-world consequences of nutrient shortages, using examples like lysine to demonstrate how disruptions can reduce growth rates, extend time to market, and significantly impact production efficiency (10:33–13:26). These disruptions ripple throughout the value chain, influencing not only on-farm productivity but also economic outcomes and consumer-level impacts such as reduced food supply and higher prices (13:26–14:31). Global Supply Dependency and Food Security Risks The discussion also highlights global sourcing trends, particularly the increasing reliance on imports for vitamins and amino acids—often driven by cost advantages (14:31–16:50). This dependency introduces new vulnerabilities into the supply chain. Industry research has shown that the U.S. feed sector relies heavily on a limited number of global suppliers, creating potential risks to animal production and broader food security if disruptions occur. [feedandadditive.com] Policy, Innovation, and National Resilience The conversation then transitions to policy and national security considerations, exploring how outsourcing production affects more than just agriculture (16:50–18:44). The panel discusses potential pathways forward, including the need to rebuild domestic capacity and enhance supply chain stability. Ongoing legislative and policy efforts are also highlighted, including engagement with Congress and federal agencies to address supply chain risks through incentives, research investment, and public-private cooperation (18:44–20:51). As the discussion continues, the panel emphasizes the importance of maintaining long-term momentum and ensuring sustained focus across political cycles, regardless of changing administrations (20:51–23:07). Industry Resources and Call to Action The episode also outlines available resources for industry stakeholders, including the full iFeeder report, summary versions, and species-specific subreports designed to make the findings more actionable (23:07–23:53). The panel concludes with a call for continued industry support and investment in research to better quantify downstream impacts on food systems and strengthen overall resilience (23:53–26:44). The episode wraps with key takeaways emphasizing that supply chain risks are real, collaboration is essential, and long-term resilience is critical to sustaining animal agriculture and food security (26:44–28:49). Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Nathan Bryan, international Leader in Molecular Medicine, the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health.
Nitric Oxide Explained: Vascular Health, Exercise Performance, and N1o1 with Dr. Nathan Bryan, international Leader in Molecular Medicine, the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health. He details NO as a ubiquitous messenger affecting blood flow, erectile function, cognition, exercise performance, endothelial dysfunction, and aging-related declines in NO production. Bryan explains why PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra prolong cyclic GMP signaling but don't fix NO deficiency, and why beet products often fail due to variable nitrate content and inadequate dosing. He outlines his NO lozenge approach that generates NO gas from sodium nitrite and magnesium ascorbate, plus a fermented beet powder drink (NOBeets), and emphasizes the role of oral bacteria (and harms of antiseptic mouthwash/fluoride) in nitrate conversion. They review published endpoints, including flow-mediated dilation, blood pressure effects, inflammation markers, triglycerides, stem cells, plaque regression, applications to Alzheimer's, glaucoma/microvascular disease, safety/dosing considerations, risks of arginine supplementation, and a dual-chamber topical NO serum developed from wound-healing experience.
Not all vitamins work the same. What if the difference between helping your child heal… and unintentionally holding them back… comes down to how you're using something as simple as vitamin C or D? In this episode, we're talking about two of the most commonly used nutrients in cancer care(vitamin C and vitamin D) and why dose, source, and strategy matter more than most people realize. This conversation comes from a live office hours session with Dr. Charles Pennick, where we walk through how these nutrients actually function in the body, the difference between synthetic and whole-food forms, and how to think about dosing safely, especially during active treatment. We also explore the nuances that often get missed: why vitamin C isn't just ascorbic acid, how high-dose IV vitamin C works differently than oral forms, and why pairing vitamin D with K2 is essential for proper absorption and safety. If you've ever felt confused about supplements—or wondered if you're doing "too much" or "not enough". This episode will help you approach these foundational nutrients with more clarity and confidence. For most of a decade, vitamin D came with a warning: take it on its own, and the calcium it raises ends up in your arteries instead of your bones. The fix, supposedly, is vitamin K2. The claim is unusually specific for supplement advice, specific enough to put to randomized, placebo-controlled trials with arterial calcium scored on CT before and after. The trials came back. They don't agree with each other. Sleep, Glymphatic Detox, and the Hidden Heart Risks of Sleep Apnea: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin explains how sleep supports brain “housekeeping” via the glymphatic system, a glial-lymphatic waste-clearance network most active during sleep that moves cerebrospinal fluid through brain spaces to remove metabolites and toxic proteins such as amyloid beta, with sleep deprivation linked to amyloid accumulation. She notes other clearance pathways, including meningeal lymphatic vessels, whose impaired function is associated with neurodegenerative disease and brain injury. Reviews of human studies suggest sleep influences glymphatic outcomes, though results are inconsistent and methods vary. She emphasizes that poor sleep is associated with dementia risk, depressive symptoms, cardiovascular events, mortality, and impaired glucose metabolism, and highlights lifestyle strategies that may improve sleep. She warns that untreated obstructive sleep apnea accelerates cardiovascular aging via intermittent hypoxia and inflammation, raising blood pressure and cardiovascular event risk, while treatment (e.g., CPAP) may halt or reverse damage.
Joined by guest Logan Thompson, this episode of BCI Cattle Chat covers a wide range of topics, beginning with updates on current cattle research projects underway during the summer. Researchers discuss ongoing work in areas such as semen evaluation technology, stocker cattle supplementation, grazing system optimization, and respiratory disease investigation. A key theme is how research helps refine management practices over time, even though results often require multiple trials to confirm reliability. The conversation then shifts to a listener question about vitamin A stability, highlighting how vitamin levels can degrade over time—especially in mineral mixes—and emphasizing strategic purchasing and seasonal supplementation. The team also discusses magnesium supplementation, noting that risk depends heavily on forage type, with cool-season grasses posing the greatest threat for deficiencies like grass tetany. They emphasize tailoring supplementation to specific conditions such as lactation stage and pasture type rather than applying blanket recommendations. Another major topic examines the feasibility of raising cow-calf pairs in confinement systems. While possible, this approach introduces challenges including increased labor, higher feed costs, ventilation requirements, and greater disease risk—especially during calving. Experts suggest that confinement may work best when used strategically, such as outside of calving season or in combination with grazing systems. Overall, the episode stresses the importance of adapting management decisions to specific operations, balancing economics, animal health, and available resources.

Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with pediatrician and author Dr. Elizabeth Mumper.
Pandemic Policies, Vaccines, and Harms to Children: pediatrician and author Dr. Elizabeth Mumper discusses her book “Kids and COVID: Costly Mistakes That Must Never Happen Again.” Mumper argues parents should question authorities, citing early pandemic decisions such as lockdowns, masking, and a “one size fits all” vaccine strategy despite children's low risk from COVID. She supports the Great Barrington Declaration's focus on protecting high-risk groups and criticizes suppression of repurposed treatments like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin. The discussion raises concerns about mRNA vaccine safety, biodistribution of lipid nanoparticles, underreporting to VAERS, loss of long-term control groups, myocarditis risk in young males, and claims of severe neurologic effects and “turbo cancers.” Mumper describes developmental, educational, and mental-health harms from masking and school closures, challenges vaccine mandates as violating informed consent, explains the cell danger response concept, and criticizes Paxlovid while favoring integrative approaches.
There's a marketing concept that applies directly to how nonprofits fundraise: some messages are painkillers, and some are vitamins. Painkillers solve immediate problems: urgent, scarce, make-or-break. Vitamins build something sustainable: aspirational, visionary, long-term. Most nonprofits accidentally built their entire fundraising strategy around one extreme or the other, and both extremes are costing them donors. In this episode, I break down the difference between painkiller and vitamin fundraising, when each one belongs in your strategy, and what happens when you overuse either. I also dig into the dangerous gray zone I call vague vitamin messaging, content that sounds nice, means nothing, and converts nobody. If your campaigns are flatlining, your donors are churning, or your monthly giving program isn't growing, this episode will show you exactly why and what to do instead.Topics:The painkiller vs. vitamin fundraising framework, and why most organizations are stuck in one extremeWhy chronic panic messaging trains donors to churn, distrust, and disappearWhat vague vitamin messaging looks like, and why it's just as dangerous as over-urgencyHow the Chicks for Change campaign hit 115% of its goal in under two weeks using a pure vitamin strategyWhy monthly giving is the ultimate vitamin, and what a small monthly donor program signals about your messagingHow to balance both painkiller and vitamin in a sustainable fundraising calendarFor a full list of links and resources mentioned in this episode, click here.Bloomerang is the complete donor, volunteer, and fundraising management solution that helps thousands of nonprofits deliver a better giving experience and create sustainable, thriving organizations. Vitamin D in pregnancy is one of those topics that sounds simple, but the details really matter. You use this essential vitamin in nearly every part of your body, and your baby depends entirely on you to supply it. The problem is that most pregnant moms do not get enough. Deficiency is incredibly common, and it is linked to a higher risk of complications like preeclampsia. To make things more confusing, most prenatal vitamins contain far less vitamin D than the evidence suggests you need during pregnancy. In this episode, we break down what vitamin D actually does, why deficiency is so widespread, how much you really need, and the simplest ways to make sure you and your baby are getting enough. Perimenopause, Insulin Resistance, and Persistent Muscle & Joint Pain: A Functional Medicine Framework: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses perimenopausal musculoskeletal symptoms—new or persistent joint pain, muscle aches, and tendon problems—and highlights a Clinician's Journal article by physical therapist Tara Moore proposing insulin resistance screening in perimenopausal musculoskeletal care. She explains that declining estradiol during the menopausal transition can worsen insulin signaling, increase visceral fat, and reduce insulin sensitivity, affecting skeletal muscle recovery and potentially contributing to tendinopathies and poor or short-lived responses to localized treatments like PT. The framework emphasizes assessing systemic metabolic contributors (e.g., sedentary behavior, high-carbohydrate nutrition patterns, PCOS, central weight gain, stress, sleep disruption) and addressing mediators such as inflammation and impaired glucose utilization. She suggests integrating metabolic risk assessment, sleep and stress strategies, resistance training, and interdisciplinary referrals, arguing that nutrition and supplementation—especially a low-carb approach—may improve recovery and pain outcomes.

Michael Repole joins the Centered on Buffalo Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about the explosive growth of the UFL, the incredible success of the Louisville Kings, and why spring football may finally be here to stay. Repole shares why he invested in the UFL, what separates this league from past spring football attempts, and how innovative rules, strong ownership, and passionate fan bases are helping build momentum across the country. He also discusses the Louisville Kings' remarkable journey from an expansion franchise to a championship contender in just one season, the importance of finding the right markets, and the future relationship between the UFL and NFL.Beyond football, the conversation dives into Repole's entrepreneurial mindset, his experiences in horse racing, lessons learned from Kobe Bryant, his longtime relationship with 50 Cent, and why he believes St. John's basketball is poised for a Final Four run.

Many people focus on vitamin D intake, but without enough magnesium your body can't activate it, leaving you functionally deficient even with sun exposure or supplements Nearly 80% of U.S. adults fall short on magnesium, creating a widespread hidden barrier that limits how well your body uses vitamin D Magnesium acts as a regulator, helping raise low vitamin D levels and reduce excessive levels to keep your body in balance If you have taken vitamin D and seen little improvement in energy, mood or lab results, low magnesium is often the missing piece Correcting magnesium levels, getting sunlight, and pairing vitamin D3 with key nutrients allows your body to use vitamin D the way it was designed to
Today, I'm thrilled to connect with Rowan Jacobsen. Rowan writes about science, nature, and the world's lesser-explored corners for publications including Harper's, Outside, The Atlantic, Scientific American, Smithsonian, and The New York Times, among others. He is the author of nine books, has lectured at Harvard and Yale, and has appeared on CBS, NBC, and NPR. In today's conversation, we discuss his unique and fascinating new book, In Defense of Sunlight, which explores the nuances surrounding light exposure. We look at the value of sun exposure and vitamin D, and Rowan explains why light acts as a master regulator in the body and how our modern lifestyles may be disrupting our natural biology more than we realize. We examine the effects of shift work, cortisol rhythm dysregulation, and the minimum effective dose of sunlight intensity and exposure, and Rowan breaks down how UVA and UVB wavelengths impact our physiology. We also cover the importance of nitric oxide production, and Rowan shares recommendations from his work. Stay tuned for an eye-opening conversation on why sunlight may be one of the most overlooked foundations of human health. For those who enjoy reading about science, I highly recommend Rowan's book! IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Why so many people fear any sun exposure rather than aiming for sensible, moderate exposure How light acts as a master regulator for circadian biology Why does spending most of the day indoors with artificial lighting make it harder to maintain healthy circadian rhythms? How shift work disrupts the body's normal repair processes How cortisol and melatonin work together as part of a coordinated daily rhythm What research shows about cloudy outdoor environments providing higher light levels than most indoor spaces The differences between how UVA and UVB exposure impact the body How ultraviolet light can trigger nitric oxide release Practical ways to support your circadian health Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website.
