She had a verucca last year that was persistent, it eventually cleared up with over the counter treatment. The verucca has come back this year and is really not shifting & it appears to be getting worse/larger. I have tried taping it, shop bought treatments and home remedies using garlic etc. What would you recommend? Now to the question: 3 months ago I started eating chicken and beef again after 15 years of a pescatarian diet. I have noticed that since that time, my frequency of burping has increased. I thought maybe my microbiome and digestive system needed time to adjust, but also thought by 3 months it would have subsided. This is the only change I've made in my diet; all other habits are the same - sleep, frequency of workouts, environment, supplements, etc. The burps come on suddenly which can be sort of embarrassing and if I try to hold them in, it causes acid reflux. As many women my age, I have been dealing with acne for a while, but got much worse around age 20 (didn't have much of a problem in high school). It appears to be fungal and comedonal acne all the time and some cystic acne around my period. Many small spots on my chin, forehead, and nostril area, sometimes in the area above my top lip. I've seen a dermatologist for the past 2 years, on Doxycycline pills, tretinoin cream, and clindamycin lotion. This helped clear my skin pretty well but not completely. I recently stopped all of these, I want to find more natural solutions to whatever is causing the acne, and the acne has, of course, come back. I try to eat clean and use low-tox products. I am always curious & have been incorporating with my clients wellness plans. As water, like food, movement and all the layers in the ‘DESTRESS' protocol are important. TIL 1 and 2 - a cure for Sickle Cell Anemia / fetal hemoglobin Note: many of the words used here have alternative UK (and Commonwealth) spellings versus USA spellings. I am using the USA versions throughout, though I personally prefer the UK versions with their diphthongs and ligatures like fœtal, but I blame my education for the bias! TLDR 1: A potential cure was approved in the UK in November 2023 for the blood disorder called Sickle Cell Anemia. TLDR 2: The oxygen-carrying pigment in fetuses is different from that in adults, and changes after birth. I am interested in all types of science, but particularly in Biology of all sorts (I have a BSc degree in Zoology). I was listening to a podcast where the subject of a potential treatment for Sickle Cell Anemia was discussed: Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder resulting in anemia which has many complications and can be fatal. It is caused by an abnormality in haemoglobin. It's a rather complex subject which we will not go into here, though the Wikipedia page has a lot of useful information. A new treatment has been developed using genetic manipulation (CRISPR), which increases the amount of fetal hemoglobin (Hemoglobin F) produced by the stem cells in the bone marrow. Red blood cells with Hemoglobin F do not form the sickle shape. A "foetus" (UK) or "fetus" (US) is the unborn offspring that develops from an animal embryo. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. In the fetus it is different from that in the adult, and is called Hemoglobin F. Normally the fetal form is replaced by the adult form after birth in the first 2-4 months. Quote from Wikipedia: Hemoglobin F has a different composition than adult forms of hemoglobin, allowing it to bind (or attach to) oxygen more strongly; this in turn enables the developing fetus to retrieve oxygen from the mother's bloodstream, which occurs through the placenta found in the mother's uterus. The change from fetal to adult haemoglobin has been known about for many years (75+?) but I had never heard of it until recently. [12:06] What is the Red Blood Cells' Function and importance to your body? ·    Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a combination of heme and globin, comprising cholesterol, protein, and iron. ·    Red blood cells only have one major function, it's to carry hemoglobin throughout the body. ·    Hemoglobin then, in turn, carries oxygen around and delivers it to various parts of the human body. ·    An important part of the lungs in your body's oxygen exchange are the alveoli. They facilitate the exchange of the air you breathe in and out, oxygen and carbon dioxide, with the red blood cells, which transport it throughout the body. ·    Predicting diseases will be made clear through observing these blood cells and them having an “enemy.” Glucose controls when and where blood circulation goes. ·    The problem comes when that glucose molecule sticks to the hemoglobin, leaving no space for more oxygen to get carried by the RBC. This is called glycation.  [23:53] Does Blood Donation Really Help with Diabetes? ·    Donating blood doesn't help your chances of having a chronic illness. It's more complicated than that. ·    Donating your blood decreases your hemoglobin and hematocrit quickly. That will signal your bone marrow to release red blood cells even though they're not ready to be released. ·    Ultimately, it's a short-term solution to a long-time problem. You aren't actually going to change anything permanently; everything will just go right back to where it was. ·    Solving symptoms is fine, but you must eliminate the problem's main root. Usually, these are just the result of a problem with high blood glucose levels.  [41:54] Is your blood sugar higher in the morning? Here's what you can do ·    We live in a world where processed food is easy. It's easier to prepare and eat and has a long shelf life. ·    The less processed food you get, the better it is for you. ·    Having a long eating window will also cause problems for you. It's caused by feeling full because of all the sugars floating around your body. You must eat food with high fat and protein to alleviate this concern. ·    The worst thing you can do is to eat late at night, especially past 7 P.M. Your body's ability to process sugars isn't as functional as it is during the day, causing the food you eat to be kept as sugar more. ·    The way to fix morning sugars is to remove the last meal you ate the day before. If you have a habit of skipping breakfast and having lunch and dinner, it's better to get breakfast and lunch and then skip dinner entirely. On this episode, we go over a pharmacotherapy plan for a patient with sickle cell disease, HFrEF, DM2, dyslipidemia, hypertension, POAG, dry eye disease, constipation, GERD, and OSA. Episode 227 Patient Case Information 57-year-old male with sickle cell disease, HFrEF, DM2, dyslipidemia, hypertension, POAG, dry eye disease, constipation, GERD, and OSA comes to your clinic to establish care. His primary concern is the number of sickle cell crisis he has been experiencing (3 ER visits in the last 5 months). He is having significant constipation daily due to his maintenance opioid regimen.  He also reports difficulty controlling his blood glucose. He has experienced 6 hypoglycemic events (BG range between 65 and as low as 42) and is confused as to what he is doing wrong with managing his diabetes. He is also concerned because he is having vivid nightmares almost every night. He also asks about the best artificial tears to get OTC because his Refresh Optive (carboxymethylcellulose) doesn't seem to be working anymore. Medication List: Losartan 100 mg daily, atenolol 50 mg daily, torsemide 20mg – 4 tabs daily, metolazone 2.5 mg 2 times per week, amlodipine 5 mg daily, simvastatin 40 mg daily, fenofibrate 160 mg daily, lantus 40 units twice daily, humalog 5 units with meals if his pre-meal BG is > 150 mg/dL, metformin ER 500 mg twice daily, hydroxyurea 500 mg – two capsules daily (admits to limited adherence), latanoprost 0.005% nightly, esomeprazole 40 mg twice daily, famotidine 40 mg daily, MiraLax 17 grams daily, and bisacodyl 5 mg daily He has a CPAP at home but admits to using it very infrequently. BMP BP – 165/89 HR – 82 Na – 137 K – 3.6 Cl – 102 CO2 – 26 Glucose – 253 eGFR – 95 mL/min Ca – 8.9 Mg – 1.9 Lipid Profile Chol – 162 LDL-C – 99 HDL-C – 49 Triglycerides  - 242 Echo with EF – 32% B-Type Natriuretic Peptide – 56.2 Vitamin B12 – 367 Hemoglobin – 7.2 Hematocrit – 20.8 MCV – 98.6 Ferritin – 1491.6 (received blood transfusion 2 weeks ago) Thanks for listening!
