State in which a body lacks enough iron to supply its needs

Click here to send me a quick message :) Iron deficiency is incredibly common, and even more common during pregnancy where there is some level of physiologic anemia with all that blood dilution but it can definitely become too much. But what is really happening? Today's guest, Samantha Chandler, speaks to what minerals are doing in our bodies, and why she sees copper as a key ally to support our overall mineral balance, including iron available in our blood, and why.She also speaks to how menstruation may be a part of female-bodied longevity, what deficiencies might be happening when progesterone is low, and what estrogen dominance may be telling us.The truth is, without basic nutrients - minerals included - we cannot actually produce healthy hormones or tissues, so minerals are often a missing piece in any hormonal or menstrual health picture. And we literally need iron in our blood to transport oxygen, which cells require to to produce energy (aka vital force). So, this topic is more important than it may seem at first glance. Iron: Deficiency or Defense? Understanding Low Iron and Ferritin Many people are told they are iron deficient simply because their iron or ferritin levels appear low on a blood test. But iron physiology is far more complex than most people realize. In this episode of the Thyroid Answers Podcast, Dr. Eric Balcavage breaks down one of the most misunderstood areas of lab testing: iron status. Fatigue, hair loss, cold intolerance, brain fog, slow metabolism, and even thyroid symptoms are often blamed on iron deficiency. When labs show low iron or low ferritin, the common response is iron supplements or iron infusions. But low iron in the blood does not always mean the body is truly deficient. In many cases, the body is intentionally regulating iron as part of an inflammatory response. Dr. Balcavage explains the difference between true iron deficiency and anemia of inflammation, why ferritin is often misunderstood, and how markers like soluble transferrin receptor can help clarify whether the body truly needs iron or is simply regulating it differently. Understanding these patterns can help prevent unnecessary iron supplementation and help identify the real reason symptoms may be occurring. In This Episode You'll Learn • Why many people are incorrectly told they are iron-deficient • The difference between true iron deficiency and anemia of inflammation • What ferritin actually represents and why it is often misunderstood • What iron, TIBC, iron saturation, and ferritin really measure • How iron levels relate to red blood cell markers like hemoglobin, MCV, and RDW • The role of soluble transferrin receptor in identifying true iron deficiency • Why iron supplementation sometimes helps—and sometimes makes people feel worse • Why iron labs must be interpreted as patterns rather than isolated numbers Key Concepts Discussed Iron metabolism Ferritin interpretation Soluble transferrin receptor Iron deficiency vs anemia of inflammation Iron regulation and inflammation Red blood cell indices and iron physiology Fatigue and low iron labs Thyroid symptoms and iron metabolism Who This Episode Is For This episode may be helpful if you: • Have been told your ferritin is low • Have been diagnosed with iron deficiency • Are taking iron supplements but still feel fatigued • Have symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, cold intolerance, or brain fog • Want to better understand how iron is regulated in the body About Dr. Eric Balcavage Dr. Eric Balcavage is the co-author of The Thyroid Debacle and the creator of State Based Medicine™, The Adaptive Thyroid Model™, and The Strategic Thyroid Solution™. Through his clinical work, research, and teaching, Dr. Balcavage focuses on helping both patients and practitioners understand the deeper physiology behind chronic symptoms, thyroid dysfunction, and metabolic adaptation so they can move beyond symptom management and toward true recovery. If you are using a GLP-1 medication and noticing hair shedding, brittle nails, or dull, dry skin, your body is signaling a nutrient gap. In this episode, Dr. Mary Alice Mina breaks down what is really happening beneath the surface and why these changes often appear before lab results do. She explains how appetite suppression can lead to low protein, vitamin deficiencies, and dehydration, all of which directly impact your skin, hair, and nails. You will learn the key deficiencies to watch for, including B12, iron, folate, and vitamin D, and the exact signs your body shows when levels drop. Dr. Mina also explains why protein intake, fiber, and hydration are critical while on GLP-1 medications, especially for preventing hair loss, muscle loss, and skin laxity. This episode gives you a clear, practical framework to protect your results, support your body, and avoid the most common mistakes people make while using GLP-1s.
Learning to Glow: Tips for Women's Health, Optimal Wellness and Aging Gracefully
Send a textIn this episode of Learning to Glow, I'm joined by Samantha Chandler to explore a completely different perspective on iron, heavy periods, and women's health.Samantha shares how a “low iron” blood test during pregnancy led her down a path of iron supplementation, postpartum complications, and eventually a deeper investigation into how iron actually functions in the body. We talk about the difference between iron levels in the blood versus how iron moves through tissues, why ferritin levels can be misunderstood, and why many women with heavy periods may actually be dealing with iron dysregulation rather than simple deficiency. We also discuss the key nutrients that support healthy iron metabolism, including copper, vitamin A, whole food vitamin C, and electrolytes. Samantha shares why she believes food quality matters, how modern iron fortification may play a role in mineral imbalance, and simple ways women can start supporting their bodies through nutrient dense foods. This conversation challenges some of the common narratives around iron deficiency and invites women to look deeper at root causes when it comes to fatigue, heavy periods, and mineral balance. In this episode we talk about:• Why “low iron” on a blood test may not tell the full story• The difference between iron deficiency and poor iron circulation• Why ferritin levels are often misunderstood• The connection between heavy menstrual bleeding and iron regulation• Nutrients that support iron movement including copper and vitamin A• Cod liver oil, beef liver, and whole food sources of mineralsFind Samantha: Click hereFind Jess below!Website: Simply Jess Skincare SIMPLY JESS SKINCARE:Each and every product is naturally derived, highly concentrated and most importantly, super performing! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Lisa: Hello- my 15 year old daughter gets really bad menstrual cramps. She is bed ridden and usually vomiting. Her PcP recommends 800mg of ibuprofen but I know that is treating the symptom and not the root cause. How do I determine the root cause and how to I get her some relief with putting her on birth control? Thanks a million!! Gabriela: Hello! I've been an avid listener of your podcast for some time now, and have really learned a lot. I was wondering if you know about Morley Robins and his beliefs about iron/deficiency. I listened to a podcast where he was guest and he said that pregnant women don't need iron even if their hemoglobin is low. He subtly connects iron fortification with hemorrhaging. Claims that a person needs only 1mg of iron daily from our diet, mentions RES, and says copper is much more important. Says we have ten times more iron in the tissue than the blood, so bloodwork isn't enough. Also says iron fortification should not be done. What is your opinion on all this? I'm confused. Rebecca: Hi Dr Cabral, I love listening to you everyday and look forward to keeping up with your wonderful sharing of knowledge. I choose to listen to limited influential wellness experts and I value your opinions very much. I would like to know why you and others don't talk about maca as a valuable nutritional superfood. In the past I have read and listened to the value of this and am wondering why its not at the forefront anymore? Thank you very much. Rebecca Victoria: Hi dr Stephen cabral, I have a tricky question that I'm hoping you can help me with. I have been a little worried about potential asbestos exposure. It's not a lot of exposure however someone told me that one exposure can lead to asbestiosis. I live a healthy life and wondering if there are lifestyle things I can do to keep my lungs healthy so it doesn't turn into an asbestos related disease. Everywhere I look on the internet doesn't really explain this. I am going to the gp as I have been extremely worried about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read your book and I saw in there it says that firefighters are exposed to more pollutants including asbestos and the book can really help with detox etc. Thank you for your time. Look forward to hearing from you! Victoria Justine: I suspect there is mold behind the drywall of my 70 year old home. There was no caulk around the outdoor windows for 2 years and I started getting cognitive symptoms after moving in. My glutathione provoked urine mycotoxin test showed up positive for 3 mycotoxins but at low levels just over the limit. She said it's possible that I'm not detoxing well and my levels are actually underrepresented. She suggested I do the MyMycoLab blood IgG test next to confirm that mold is the cause of my severe MCAS. I am trying to determine if I should sell my home as I don't want to remediate. I work from home so this would be the only exposure source. Do you think this test is accurate for determining if mold is the cause of my symptoms? In this episode of The Health Revival Show, we break down: •The difference between iron vs ferritin •Why normal iron doesn't mean you're okay •The most common anemia patterns (including B12, chronic disease & postpartum anemia) •How iron impacts thyroid health, hormones, metabolism & detox •Why oral iron causes bloating, constipation, and feeds gut infections •Functional ranges vs “normal” lab ranges most doctors use If you've been told “your labs are normal” but you're exhausted, cold, losing hair, bloated, inflamed, or have heavy periods — this episode will change how you look at your bloodwork forever. ***CONNECT
I have been hearing about iron overload since 2012 from various natural health educators. In 2019 the seeds that were sprouted in my mind fully developed as I completely embraced the idea that everybody has iron overload and nobody is iron deficient. I went full steam ahead with that idea for the next several years, making it a core part of my health message. I practiced what I preached and donated blood twice. The first time I felt superhuman - very mentally clear and energetic. The second time I donated blood it gave me extreme fatigue, brain fog, and muscular weakness that took me a long time to recover from. This show is not meant to disparage or restart a fight, but to make it crystal clear to those that don't follow me on social media my stance on iron. Many women and even some men (former vegans/vegetarians) are suffering from the symptoms of iron deficiency such as hair loss and fatigue. Most people are unaware that ascorbic acid suppresses hepcidin at 1000mg dose which increases non-heme iron absorption. That is important to know if you are trying to build your savings account (serum ferritin) with supplementing iron bisglycinate. I also talk about how L-lysine amino acid is underrated for restoring your iron status, the role of vitamin E, and how the widespread heavy metal toxicity makes iron deficiency worse. I talk about why serum ferritin is in fact an accurate representation of tissue iron stores according to top iron researchers, why zinc is crucial for proper iron metabolism, how you can tell if you are deficient in iron without any bloodwork, the best iron supplements i've found, the permanent brain damage to the baby that occurs if a pregnant women is iron deficient, and I ask why the Root Cause Protocol people never talk about iron deficiency without anemia and the three different stages. How to Recognise Nutrient Deficiencies in Children (Through Practical & Manageable Steps)This week on the podcast, we're diving into a topic that comes up constantly inside our clinic: the three most common nutrient deficiencies we see in children and the subtle signs parents often miss.We are joined by our nutritionist Adelle Rutch, who supports families all over Australia and beyond through our online clinic. From rural communities to busy city families, Adelle brings a practical approach to helping parents understand what might really be going on beneath every child being “tired, moody” or “just not quite themselves.”In this episode, we explore why these 3 nutrient deficiencies show up so frequently in kids, what they actually look like in everyday life, and gentle ways parents can start supporting their child's nutrient levels without overwhelm. Here's what we cover:✅ The three nutrient deficiencies Adelle sees most often in clinic and how they can affect your child's energy, immunity, growth and learning. ✅ Subtle signs to look out for – from frequent infections and “fake hyper” tiredness to growing pains and concentration struggles. ✅ Everyday ways to support your kid's nutrients naturally, including family-friendly food ideas and small tweaks that make a real difference over time. ✅ When testing is worth considering and why working with a practitioner helps you get the right markers checked (and avoid guessing or supplementing blindly).
Are you excessively tired with your hair falling out, nails always breaking, brain often foggy or sometimes, despite having youth on your side, maybe forgetting how to form a sentence? These are amongst the symptoms of iron deficiency, often underdiagnosed. Nuala McGovern will be speaking to Dr Sue Pavord, Consultant Haematologist and President of the British Society for Haematology, and freelance journalist Rose Stokes. The Royal College of Pathologists say that a shortage of consultants means that "1 in 5 families are now waiting 6 months or more, and some longer than 12 months" for post mortems. The 'paediatric and perinatal pathology workforce' report said there were no paediatric or perinatal pathology consultants in the South West, the Midlands or Northern Ireland. Dr Clair Evans, the chair of the college's advisory committee - a Consultant Paediatric and Perinatal pathologist explains the situation further. At lunchtime on Wednesday the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, will unveil her much anticipated second budget. How could this budget affect the lives of women in 2026? We're joined by the BBC's Cost of Living correspondent Colletta Smith, to talk us through what we might see in the red briefcase on Wednesday. A self-portrait by Frida Kahlo has just sold for $55 million in New York. It is the highest price ever paid for a work by a female artist. To illustrate the magnitude of the difference, a painting by Klimt was also sold recently for $236m. Professor Renee Adams is a professor of finance at Oxford Saïd business school and researches the role of gender in the art market, where women's works generally achieve much lower values. She explains why and what needs to change. As part of the BBC 2 Civilisations series, tonight's programme looks at the rise and fall of the Aztec Empire and the part that a young woman played in its demise. She was called Malintzin and acted as translator at the momentous first meeting in 1519 between Montezuma, the ruler of the vast Aztec Empire, and the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. To find out more about Malintzin and her role in Mexican history and culture Nuala is joined by Dr Elizabeth Baquedano, from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London and Dr Jessica Fernández de Lara Harada from the University of Oxford.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

Additionally, Leyla reviews a recent study showing that vegans have significantly lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids compared to other dietary groups, emphasizing the need for careful planning and necessary supplementation to maintain optimal health for those on plant-based diets.
Why Your Child's 'Growing Pains' Are A Warning Sign for Pelvic Misalignment | The Prime Podcast - Episode 339 Is your child waking up at night complaining of deep, aching leg pain? As a parent, you've likely been told it's just "growing pains"—a normal phase they'll eventually outgrow. But what if that common advice is wrong? In this crucial episode of The Prime Podcast (Episode 339), Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie Wies expose the truth behind this widespread misconception. They reveal why "growing pains" are often a major warning sign of an underlying structural issue: pelvic misalignment. Learn how simple childhood tumbles and falls can create imbalances in the pelvis, leading to nervous system interference and causing the frustrating, recurring leg pain that keeps your child (and you) up at night. Discover the tell-tale signs that the pain isn't from growth, such as when it consistently affects only one leg. The doctors explain how this core issue can be connected to other common childhood conditions like chronic constipation, early motor delays, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), and even painful PMS in the teen years. Most importantly, get empowered with simple, at-home checks you can perform to spot these subtle imbalances in your child's posture and muscle development. Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie advocate for a proactive, natural approach to health that addresses the root cause of the pain, rather than just masking the symptoms with medication. If you're tired of feeling helpless and are looking for real solutions for your child's discomfort, this episode provides the valuable insights and actionable steps you need to foster a foundation of true health and proper alignment for your family. MEDICAL TERMS EXPLAINED Subluxation: A chiropractic term for a misalignment or altered position of the vertebrae or pelvic bones, which can interfere with the nervous system's ability to communicate effectively with the rest of the body. Pelvic Misalignment: A condition where the pelvis is not level, balanced, or symmetrical. This forces the body to compensate for the imbalance, often leading to uneven weight distribution, muscle strain, joint dysfunction, and pain, particularly in the lower back and legs. Nervous System Interference: When a subluxation or misalignment puts pressure on, irritates, or distorts nerves, it disrupts the flow of vital information between the brain and the body. This interference can negatively impact muscle function, organ health, developmental milestones, and overall well-being. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pain is NOT a normal part of growth; it is a critical signal that indicates an underlying issue. "Growing pains" that consistently occur on one side of the body are a strong indicator of a structural imbalance, not uniform growth. The primary cause of these pains is frequently an unlevel or misaligned pelvis, often resulting from accumulated falls and minor traumas experienced throughout childhood. Parents can learn practical, simple methods to observe and identify signs of postural and muscular imbalances in their children at home. Adopting a proactive approach, particularly through chiropractic care, can effectively identify and correct the underlying structural causes, offering a real and lasting solution beyond temporary symptom management. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 6-19, 2025: Dr. Dawn presents the VITAL study evidence showing 2,000 IU daily vitamin D prevents telomere shortening in immune cells, effectively slowing biological aging by three years. Groundbreaking mouse research reveals maternal iron deficiency can alter fetal sex development. When iron levels dropped 60%, the SYR gene controlling male development switched off, causing 6 of 39 XY offspring to develop ovaries instead of testes. Thus, mammalian sex can be influenced by environmental factors just like in amphibians and fish. Dr. Dawn connects this to gender identity questions, advocating supporting puberty blockers based on their 30-year safety record. Dr. Dawn advocates widespread CPR and AED training after describing a successful Buffalo airport rescue. With 350,000 annual out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and 90% fatality rates, immediate AED intervention can triple survival odds. She promotes the Pulsepoint app registering 185,000 AEDs and praises countries like Norway achieving 90% population CPR training through driver's license requirements. Post-Roe v. Wade data shows vasectomies doubled in men aged 19-26 while tubal ligations rose 70%, mostly in abortion-ban states. Dr. Dawn notes the irony that policies intended to increase births prompted widespread voluntary sterilization. Environmental concerns from January 2025 Moss Landing battery fire and LA wildfires highlight toxic contamination from burning lithium, plastics, and building materials. She advocates fire-resistant landscaping and home hardening, noting some fire-resistant homes survived while surroundings burned. British research shows pet ownership provides life satisfaction equivalent to $90,000 annual income boost. Dr. Dawn experiences this firsthand, noting pets provide family-like benefits without complex interpersonal dynamics. Sleep study reveals 15 minutes additional nightly sleep improves cognitive performance in tweens. Children sleeping 7.25 versus 7.10 hours showed better academics and larger brain volumes, though Dr. Dawn questions causation versus correlation. Mayo Clinic identified Interleukin-23 as a reliable cellular senescence biomarker across multiple tissues. Natural compounds like quercetin, fisetin, and luteolin can reduce these aging markers, supporting her dietary supplementation philosophy.
