It's finally here - Oppenheimer releases in cinemas this week! Film journalist Amon Warmann joins me to review the latest, extraordinary feature from writer/director Christopher Nolan. This episode is spoiler-free.

Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Priest, the movie was a big hit upon release in 2006 and stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as two rival magicians who go to war, obsessed with creating the best on stage illusion. On today's bonus episode film podcaster Lee Hutchison joins me to discuss Nolan’s short films Doodlebug and Quay. Made with the support of UCL’s film society, Nolan made the three minute short Doodlebug in 1997, before he made his first feature Following a year later. Meanwhile Quay is a short documentary about the stop motion animators the Quay Brothers, which Nolan made in 2015 in-between Interstellar and Dunkirk. On today's episode I am joined by journalist and film critic Cameron Frew to discuss Nolan’s hit movie Batman Begins, the film which started The Dark Knight Trilogy. Released in 2005, Batman Begins changed the future of superhero movies with its more grounded, darker and realistic take on the genre, something Nolan would build on with the sequels. The origin story follows Bruce Wayne as he becomes Batman, and begins his fight to rid Gotham of crime and corruption. We discuss its impact on the superhero genre, horror imagery, practical effects vs CGI and much more.

On this episode I am joined by film critic Freda Cooper to discuss Nolan’s brilliant thriller Insomnia. Released in 2002, this remake of a Norwegian film of the same name was both a box office and critical hit, and certainly helped Nolan seal the deal on Batman Begins. The film tells the story of a homicide detective investigating the murder in a town where the sun doesn’t set, and stars Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank. We discuss the theme of moral ambiguity, the incredible performances at the heart of this movie, mind games and much more.

Writer and broadcaster Anna Cale joins us to discuss Nolan’s mystery thriller Memento. Released in the year 2000, Memento is the movie that introduced a lot of people to Nolan, whilst also catching the attention of Hollywood, being a huge indie success. The film tells the story of a man with short term memory loss, who is attempting to track down his wife’s killer, and stars Guy Pearce, Carrie Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano. We discuss the theme of memory, non-linear storytelling, Nolan’s dedication to attention to detail and more.

Film critic Corey Hughes joins me to discuss Nolan’s feature length debut film Following. The 1998 neo-noir crime thriller was made on a shoestring budget, and was released to a general positive response to critics, also winning several awards on the festival circuit, recognising Nolan as up and coming talent. Following tells the story of a young man who follows strangers as a hobby, eventually being drawn into the criminal underworld when he fails to keep his distance with someone he has been following. We discuss the themes, Nolan’s fascination with crime and justice, documentarian style filmmaking, how this movie laid the groundwork for his future career and more.
