In this episode of Hit Rewind, hosts Michael and Mindy dive into the world of heist films with a spotlight on "How to Beat the High Cost of Living" and the remake of "Fun with Dick and Jane." These films pivot on narratives of ordinary people driven to extraordinary lengths due to economic pressure. While exploring these stories, Michael and Mindy discuss how both movies resonate with timeless themes of economic instability and blue-collar struggles, touching on historical contexts like the Carter administration's recession and the impact of corporate downsizing. The conversation traverses through character dynamics, societal pressures, and the surprising comedic elements that these heist stories unfurl. With reflections on the performances of iconic actors like Jessica Lange, Jane Curtain, Jim Carrey, and Téa Leoni, the hosts offer insight into the transformation of characters in the face of adversities. They compare the more recent comedic heist adaptation to its original, noting the heart and relatability added to the remake's script. Michael and Mindy elaborate on how these films, though set in different eras, present a relatable tableau of struggle and resilience, with sharp critiques of corporate America and how financial crises affect the everyman. As they dissect these films, they offer listeners a mix of nostalgia and critical perspective on the evolution of heist themed cinema from past to present.
Nalgas. Traseros. Posaderas. Melocotones... culos.

This movie stars the likes of Jenna Ortega as a moody cutie patootie, Paul Rudd as an ageless and spineless attorney, Will Poulter as the comic relief, Téa Leoni as the worst person you could ever work for, and Richard E. Grant who got a little too close to the sun. Wanna watch us instead? Subscribe to our YouTube channel for extra content. Subscribe here! And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. Well hurrah hooray because this week it's a Toby Jones show (not a Noby Jones show) and he joins Simon to chat about ‘Mr. Burton'. In this true story Toby plays the title character, schoolteacher Philip Burton, who spots the talent of young pupil Richie Jenkins in the Welsh mining town of his birth. Burton nurtures Jenkins' acting flair as he becomes Richard Burton—taking his guardian's name as the stage name by which he became internationally famous. The erudite everyman as always, Toby chats to Simon about accents, pyjamas, and the future of TV drama. Mark reviews ‘Mr. Burton' too, as well as ‘Restless', a psychological thriller about nightmare-inducing noisy neighbours—or at least they would be nightmare-inducing if Nicky (Lyndsey Marshal) could get any sleep. Plus, A24's ‘Death of a Unicorn'—the starry satire where Paul Rudd & Jenna Ortega's father and daughter accidentally run over a unicorn on the way to visit the billionaire Leopold family (Richard E Grant, Téa Leoni and Will Poulter). Mark's verdict on all these, plus your correspondence on everything from search engines to The Stath—and memories of the late Val Kilmer. This week, we dedicate our episode to the legendary Drew Struzan, the iconic artist behind some of the most memorable movie posters of all time. Struzan, whose work defined the visual identity of films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future, can no longer create due to his battle with Alzheimer's. Jeff and Sean take a moment to celebrate his legacy, discuss the documentary Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, and make the case for why real, human-created art needs to be protected. On the latest episode of The Discourse, actor Will Poulter and writer-director Alex Scharfman joined host Mike DeAngelo to discuss their new A24 horror-comedy "Death of a Unicorn," a twisted genre mash-up that brings unicorns into the Spielbergian creature-feature fold. The film also stars Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Téa Leoni, Anthony Carrigan, Richard E. Grant, and Sunita Mani, and tells the story of a tech billionaire's lawyer and his daughter who accidentally hit a unicorn with their car and attempt to cover it up at an elite corporate retreat. Magical madness, death, and more unicorn action ensue!Poulter, having taken a break from comedy in recent years, said he relished playing Shepard, an Ivy League-bred man-child desperate for approval and woefully out of touch. "It's really fun to be conscious of the fact that everyone's going to be laughing at you, and never with you," he said. "You sort of feel like he's never really left the various ivory towers that his family own around the world, but thinks he's superior to everyone around him.”READ MORE: ‘Death of a Unicorn' Review: Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd Make Monster Movie Magic for A24 [SXSW]Despite his delusions of grandeur, Poulter was careful not to strip Shep of all humanity. "I don't want to absolve him of wrongdoing, but ultimately what it boils down to is the child-parent relationship," he explained. "What Shep really wants more than anything is approval from his dad, and he wants his mom to be more honest with him than she's ever been."

“I cried throughout the entire thing. It made me want to be a better man.” We're at the end of an era, folks. The Nicolas Cage season of Because You Watched Starcrash draws to a close with our obligatory holiday movie and a spectacular piece of metafiction. Your Distinguished Professors and salute the man of the hour. Topics discussed include our latest accompanying whiskey, yet another manifestation of the Magical Negro, movies that get dads to cry, Cash's alignment is called into question, nostalgia for pre-9/11 airport security, the apparent intense bone-ability of Jack, the lack of clear thinking at the airport, Téa Leoni's shower scene, the relative lack of crazy-Cage in FM, comparison with The Good Place (with light spoilers), Jack's life is actually pretty good prior to the glimpse, speculation about the dimensional or time-travel issues involved with the glimpse, Cage's bad Boston accent, Nicky's outfit and hairstyle as a callback to Cage's infamous 1990 talk show appearance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, some obligatory ribbing of M. Night Shyamalan, a nihilistic callback to Pig, speculation about drinking a beer underwater, parallel with Ex Machina, amazing Cage/ Pascal chemistry, Cage making out with Nicky, our three favorite movies, always trusting our shamanic instincts as thespians, the cruel end of the glimpse, the absurdity of being “trapped” in marriage to a Hollywood actress, parallels between FM and a Hallmark movie, a bleak interpretation of the end of FM, a quick PKD reference, being haunted by a lost alternate past, not one but TWO Nick Cage Queries, and our future date with Paddington 2.
It's time to get festive with Nicolas Cage!

Mary, ‘King' of Hungary, was coronated today in history, on 17th September, 1382. The Hungarian nobility had never had a female monarch, and did not recognize the possibility of one in law, so decided to crown her as if she was male - but that was by no means the end of her problems. Before long, Charles of Naples was leading a rebellion to overthrow the child monarch. In this episode, The Retrospectors rank the numerous poor decisions of Mary's mother, the Queen Regent Elizabeth; unearth the impressive linguistic leg-work put in by Mary's future husband, Sigismund of Luxembourg; and explain how Mary's father Louis' best laid plans unraveled so dramatically… Further Reading: • ‘A concise history of Hungary - By Miklós Molnár' (Cambridge University Press, 2001): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/A_Concise_History_of_Hungary/y0g4YEp7ZrsC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=mary+sigismund&pg=PA56&printsec=frontcover • 'Outlines of Medieval History - By Charles William Previté-Orton' (1916): https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=4PXDDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA481&dq=mary+sigismund&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjS2enHt6WBAxVUQkEAHeTwC2AQ6AF6BAgLEAI • ‘Queen Mary of Hungary by Leoni, 1553 - 1564' (American Friends of the Prado Museum, 2023): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yaagl1xhbLA This episode first premiered in 2023, for members of
