On the forty- sixth episode of All the Film Things, my friend writer/ director Samy El- Kamel is back for the second edition of our beloved segment, Nolanception, to talk about the scores of Christopher Nolan films. This episode contains explicit languageNolanception is a segment that allows Samy and I, who are both massive Nolan fans, to dive deep and more niche topics relating to the work of the one and only Sir Christopher Nolan. The first edition of this segment was released last July where we talked about the non- linearity of Nolan's films. Even though I'm embarrassingly more giddy when talking about Nolan films, this is my favorite segment and I still regard that first Nolanception episode as my favorite ATFT episode (see Episode 25 to give that one a listen)! This time, we look closely into the scores of Christopher Nolan films by composers from David Juliyan to Hans Zimmer to Ludwig Göransson. This is Samy's 12th time on ATFT! He is the second most frequent guest on the show, after Cole Echevarria, and is about as obsessed with Christopher Nolan as I am so I always am very excited to record Nolanception episodes with Samy. Samy's next short film, inspired partly by Memento, “Anatomy of a Panic Attack” will be entering the production phase next month! The Indiegogo campaign may still be live by the time this episode is releases so make a donation if you still can by clicking this link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/anatomy-of-a-panic-attack If you're unable to donate, spread the word across social media and check out the teaser trailer for the short on his YouTube channel by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBnIdb92TL8 ! You can also stay updated on Samy and his work by following @barefootpythonmedia and/ or @samy_elkamel24 on Instagram! This episode was recorded on June 26, 2025. In this episode, Samy and I talk about the scores of each Nolan film from Following to Oppenheimer before concluding the episode with our top five Nolan film scores. Samy shares which film he believes is the greatest film score of all time while I compare a few sounds within scores to famous songs, including a Britney Spears song (where my worlds collide). We also debate which track is better, “Time” or “No Time for Caution”, wonder about why one track on The Dark Knight Rises album is included, and Hans Zimmer's theme for Heath Ledger's Joker. All this and more on the new episode of ATFT!Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Tom Lennon tells us he's not working that hard on the unbelievably large number of projects he never stops working on. From writing movies (including a “HALL OF PRESIDENTS” SciFi comedy) to acting in 100s of shows to playing in a Smiths tribute band Thomas Lennon doesn't stop. And don't try to stop him. Bio: Thomas Lennon is an actor, producer and New York Times Best Selling author from Oak Park, Illinois. He attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he was a member of the influential sketch comedy group The State. The State's hit television series ran on MTV for three seasons and received an Ace Award nomination for Best Comedy Series. After his work on The State, he created two more popular series: Viva Variety and Reno 911!, on which he also played Lieutenant Jim Dangle. Lennon has also written numerous feature films, including Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Reno 911!: Miami, The Pacifier, Balls of Fury and Hell Baby. In addition to writing films, Lennon co-authored, Writing Movies for Fun and Profit, a book about the studio system that Anna Kendrick called, “The Best Book about Hollywood… Hilarious and insanely accurate,” in the New York Times. In 2019, Lennon debuted on the New York's Bestseller List with his children's book Ronan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddles. In March of 2020, Lennon released the sequel with Ronan Boyle and the Swamp of Certain Death followed by the third installment of the series, Ronan Boyle: Into the Strange Place in 2022. A DreamWorks Animation feature film of the Ronan Boyle series is currently in development. As an actor, Lennon has appeared in the films Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Dark Knight Rises, Le Divorce, Heights, Conversations with Other Women, Memento, 17 Again, I Love You, Man, Cedar Rapids, Knight of Cups, Bad Teacher, Harold and Kumar 3D and What to Expect When You're Expecting. His other credits include Netflix's A Futile and Stupid Gesture, Half Magic opposite Heather Graham and Clint Eastwood's The 15:57 to Paris. He can be seen in the Russo Brother's film CHERRY, with Tom Holland. In television he has been seen in How I Met Your Mother, Sean Saves the World, The Odd Couple, Drunk History, The Santa Clarita Diet, Supergirl, Lethal Weapon, and The Twilight Zone. Lennon also recently produced a musical stage adaptation of the beloved 1980's film TRADING PLACES. Lennon lives in Los Angeles and Wisconsin with his wife, the actress Jenny Robertson, and their son, Oliver.Aired 7-2-25

"I'm Gotham's reckoning"- Cinematic Reviews back to Gotham for the epic finale of Nolan's Batman trilogy.
In this lively and irreverent episode of The Middle of Culture, Peter and Eden build a tier list ranking 29 DC movies, from the highs of Christopher Reeve's iconic Superman to the lows of Black Adam, which earns a new category all its own: "F*** You Forever." Along the way, they debate the merits of Nolan's Batman trilogy, praise Margot Robbie while trashing her material, and wax poetic about Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and the ridiculous joy of Catwoman (2004). The episode also dives into recent reads, including the emotionally devastating Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, with Eden delivering an impassioned recounting that might just wreck you. Add in some heat-dome weather talk, tech-death music recs, and plenty of hot takes, and you've got one of the most entertaining episodes yet.Episode Notes:Welcome BackEden shares weather misery and emotional tales of crying over Adachi and ShimamuraPeter updates on his son's relentless swim meet schedule and praises the dedication of teen athletesWhat We're IntoEden continues to love The Apothecary Diaries, now reading it aloud with CassiDeep emotional dive into Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, including:Cozy slice-of-life momentsPost-apocalyptic existentialismA bittersweet afterlife reunion that left Eden in tearsPeter shares his current reading on behavior change and playing Mario Kart with the kidsMetal music recs from Peter:Fallujah and Exocrine (tech-death highlights)Sigh's re-recording of Hangman's Hymn (2007 → 2025 edition)The Tier List Begins29 DC movies ranked from S-tier to a newly invented bottom tierImmediate praise for Superman: The Movie -- the only true S-tier filmBatman Begins and The Batman hold strong in A-tierThe Dark Knight lands at a controversial B, Dark Knight Rises flops to DSurprising affection for Catwoman bumps it up to C, while Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Black Adam are rightfully trashedEden passionately defends the joyfully chaotic Batman & Robin, despite its executionZack Snyder's Justice League makes it to B solely for its absurdityLego Batman wins hearts, even from Eden who has a Lego movie vendettaNew Tier Created: "F*** You Forever"Reserved exclusively for Black Adam, a film so despised that Peter stopped watching anything with The Rock afterwardWrap-UpOne clear conclusion: 1978's Superman stands unmatchedRichard Donner hailed as the god-tier director James Gunn can't touchGentle roast of MCU's decline vs DC's chaotic legacyCall to action: listeners encouraged to weigh in via feedback@themiddleofculture.com
Matt Stevens, designer and illustrator, talks about The Batman, a unique take on the Bruce Wayne and Batman mythology brought to life by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, and Andy Serkis. This 2022 version has less of the comic-y qualities that Joel Schumacher instilled in the 90s versions, but has a gritty, frightening ambiance closer to David Fincher's Se7en. In addition to The Batman, Stevens also talks about Good Movies as Old Books which reimagines movies as book covers.-Matt Stevens found himself frustrated with his current job as creative director at a brand agency, so he (literally) went back to the drawing board with an illustration project that turned out to be the perfect fit, designing a Nike Air Max shoe every day. After doing 50 drawings, he had initially chose to end the project, but aimed for 100 AirMax1-a-day drawings that he'd showcase in an art book, accompanying website, and exhibition, also proved rewarding. To date, he's created multiple, self-initiated projects, including the Good Movies as Old Books project, now a book and postcard set available from Chronicle.https://www.goodmoviesasoldbooks.com/https://www.hellomattstevens.com/https://www.hellomattstevens.com/store/batman-xwms5https://www.hellomattstevens.com/store/batman-xwms5-gnyzehttps://www.hellomattstevens.com/book-covers-varioushttps://www.hellomattstevens.com/blog/process-the-rookie-handbook-Taking Side Projects to the Next Level, HOW magazinehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1tXNGjxQv4jwbf77DJOffXpENtbJwcPPH/view?usp=sharingMatt Stevens on The Great Discontenthttps://thegreatdiscontent.com/interview/matt-stevens/-The Batman (2022)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1877830/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkeshttps://deadline.com/2024/10/dynamic-duo-movie-robins-dc-1236105077/-Batman and Se7en, the connectionshttps://x.com/JasonTselentis/status/176347788844597248https://www.vulture.com/2012/07/46-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-batman-films.htmlhttps://whatculture.com/film/superman-and-batman-team-up-movie-set-for-2015-Designers, artists, and media discussedSaul Basshttps://eyeondesign.aiga.org/design-history-101/Kurt Cobainhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_CobainPrismacolorhttps://www.prismacolor.com/-Other movies and shows discussed, alphabetical listBatman (1989)Batman Begins (2005)Batman Returns (1992)Batman v Superman (2016)Breaking Bad (2008-2013)Citizen Kane (1941)The Crow (1994)The Dark Knight (2008)The Dark Knight Rises (2012)Network (1976)Peacemaker (2022-)The Penguin (2024-)Se7en (1995)Thunderbolts* (2025)

The fire rises, brother! This week we conclude our Nolan run with the biggest and most divisive entry in his Batman saga. Also discussed this week: the origins of Tom Hardy's infamous Bane voice, whether or not Joseph Gordon Levitt's character should have just been named Dick Grayson, and…why the hell is Bruce so fucking cruel to Alfred?Next week it's bonus time, baby! Alejandro González Iñárritu may not have made a Batman movie per se…but there's no way we could skip BIRDMAN for this series. Listeners, you either die a normal film podcast, or live long enough to see your show completely devolve into a Christopher Nolan marathon. Between Heath Ledger's legendary turn as the Joker, Nolan's transformation into an IMAX-first director, and the coolest truck crash in cinema history, there's so much to explore in this sprawling behemoth of a picture. We went for nearly four hours on this one, and could easily do another four. THE DARK KNIGHT is (still!) just that good!! Over the years we have discussed the selective and predictive programming in music, movies, television, etc., in regard to everything from UFOs to human trafficking and child abuse. The movie Independence Day, released July 3, 1996, seemed to predict the appearance of a city-sized UFO, which manifested in Phoenix as the infamous ‘Phoenix Lights' on March 13, 1997. The movie Nope seemed to predict the shooting down of objects over Alaska, Canada, and Lake Huron, one of which had “strings hanging off” of it like in the movie UFO. Movies like Spotlight and the Sound of Freedom show us the underbelly of sexual abuse and trafficking. During the pandemic the top movies were Contagion, 28 Days Later, and 12 Monkeys. A 2022 Netflix film called White Noise, about a train carrying toxic chemicals derailing in a small Ohio town, was brought to life when on February 3, 2023, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the same town, East Palestine, Ohio, which was used for filming the movie crash. M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin did something similar with plane crashes and earthquakes. In fact, the movie was released on the day of the Ohio train wreck, February 3rd. The next day a FedEx cargo plane almost landed on a commercial Southwest flight. A week later an American Airlines flight ran into a bus on the taxiway. A few days later a report came out about a United Airlines flight that fell 1,400ft out of the sky after take off from Hawaii. Long after the movie was shot, but before release, two other planes almost collided at JFK and before that the NOTAM system went down grounding flights nationwide. In the middle of all this, three days after the movie release, a massive 7.8 earthquake rocked Turkey and opened up an enormous chasm in the earth. The movie ends with fire beginning to engulf the earth, a prelude to the upcoming movie Oppenheimer. These are themes also in the upcoming Dune 2 and Fallout tv adaption. The new Wes Anderson movie Asteroid City is now setting the stage, literally, for an excepted flop and expected hit, i.e. the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer, both set to be released on July 21, 2023. Asteroid City is really a movie about a play, wherein the actors and audience move in-between sets, between what is real and what is staged. In Asteroid City there are quarantines, aliens, doorways between worlds, and in the background atomic bombs, disassociate from reality. In the Barbie movie promos the character stands within a mirror. The backdrops and sets are also similar, even in the pastel-like colors, to the Barbie movie, which is obviously about Barbie Land and how dolls with no human essence journey into the world of humans. In one scene there are two X's stacked on top of each other, perhaps signifying the XX chromosomes of women, of which Barbie does not have. She is plastic, a doll, and not real. The point is that in a fake world the only thing that matters is the mask and outward appearance, and thus one can be a man or woman by choice. Also, in the Barbie movie there is supposedly a map showing China's claimed territory of Vietnam which prompted that country to ban the movie. How interesting is it then that Barbie is provoking fears of atomic war and its release date is on the same day as Oppenheimer, which is about the atomic bomb. A similar thing happened in Christopher Nolan's movie Dark Knight Rises, released July 20, 2012, when one of the strike zones in the city was listed on a map as Sandy Hook - like the shooting on December 14, 2012. Interestingly, July 20 was also the Aurora, Colorado, shooting which took place during a screening of Nolan's new Batman movie. The release of these two movies on the same day contrasts the fake world of PINK with the real world of BLACK, themes that can be found all throughout pop-culture, from the Powerpuff Girls in the 1990s, which features black goo and three homunculi, one of which is pink, to recent hit songs like Pink Venom, from the band BLACKPINK, which features black apples, black goo, broken mirrors signifying split personalities, along religious and mythic imagery. One line is “the fire that'll slowly put you to sleep.” A year prior to Pink Venom an article from Reuters out of Japan stated the following of Moderna shots: “Black substances were spotted in syringes and a vial, with pink substances found in another syringe, the health ministry said.”The innocence and purity of pink mixed with mysterious chemicals, massive explosions, etc., create mutations that turn us into something not human – something barbaric or mutated by radiation. That's what media and movies do, be it through coincidence, predictive programming, movie magic, or retro causality. The question is do you prefer the womblike matrix of Barbie or the real world of Oppenheimer that is about to be engulfed in flames? Will you take the high heel or Birkenstock, the blue pill or the red? Will you be human or turn over the codes to Zion for a steak and glass of wine?*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Support The Dread Campain! https://shorturl.at/nFqIh The Dark Knight changed my life — literally. In this heartfelt deep-dive, Greg Alba (Reel Rejects) and writer-director Patrick Hogue explore the cultural earthquake that was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008), how seeing it in IMAX shaped Greg's love for cinema, and why it remains one of the most impactful movie theater experiences ever. From Heath Ledger's iconic Joker performance, Christian Bale's Batman, to the unforgettable interrogation scene, the Gotham City opening shot, and the prologue before I Am Legend, we unpack why this Batman film redefined superhero movies forever. We also dive into IMAX as a format vs VOD, nostalgia vs spectacle, and compare experiences to movies like Barbenheimer, Cabin in the Woods, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Dark Knight Rises, Hereditary, Talk to Me, Evil Dead, and 28 Days Later. Plus, Patrick shares the logline and inspiration for his debut horror feature The Dread, influenced by A24 horror, The Babadook, It's a Wonderful Life, and Evil Dead 2. (It helps new listeners find the show.) Thank you. This is Renegade Files Episode 82, James Holmes the Batman Shøøter. Just after midnight on July 20, 2012 an armed man in a gas mask set off tear gas in a crowded theater at the premier of Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises in the Century 16 multiplex Cinema in Aurora, Colorado. Before the smoke cleared 12 were dead, and 70 were injured. Lone gunman James Holmes then walked out, leaned calmly against his white Hyundai, still in body armor and gas mask, and waited to be arrested. At 12:38 police dispatch received a call: gunshots fired in theater. Ninety seconds later police were on the scene. Pandemonium. Four minutes later 24 year-old James Holmes was in the back of a cop car. The arresting officer initially thought Holmes was on the SWAT team, and when he asked him if he was the one who had done this, he tells us that Holmes replied, “I am the Joker,” but Holmes denies ever saying that. The Superhero-Villain angles made the story huge news, and when Holmes arrived in court with fluorescent orange-dyed hair and a wide-eyed vacant expression, the world's attention was galvanized. This was a tragedy with needless injuries, unnecessary loss of life, and untold psychological stress forced upon both the people there and upon a nation. This podcast episode was not created to suggest this event didn't happen, nor to capitalize on the tragedy, and my heartfelt compassion goes out to everyone who has been affected by this very real crime. I've put this episode off for a while now, but I finally decided that there's information here that needs to be brought to light. If this event did not happen in the way we have been told, or if important facts have been left unchecked, then the circumstances here deserve a deeper look. That's what we'll do today. This is not an episode of sensationalism, although many of the facts are dramatic. But there's something here that just feels wrong, out of place, or slightly off in some ways that are difficult to pinpoint. It's the tidy way that it was all packaged, the conflicting reports that were ignored, the high-level connections of some of those involved, and the almost cartoonish evidence presented after the fact. When logic clashes with the official narrative, I go to work. In this episode I'll do my best to give you the facts we know, the details that seem irrational, and the connections others have overlooked so you and I can view this tragic event with fresh eyes. So join me now, and together we will dive deep into the stories surrounding James Holmes, the Batman Shøøter. As I began to prepare for my recent episode with Jason from Binge Movies on Fascism in Cinema, it occurred to me that this would be a fascinating ongoing series in the next year or two in American history. For the next episode of the series, we are looking at authoritarian violence and the idea of due process in our society, and how it can be reflected in films. Joining me for this episode is Darin Lundberg from NostalgiaCast and Back to Bluey, and listen to us discuss Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry", Paul Michael Glaser's "The Running Man", and Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises". It's a very different discussion, but one worth taking in. I hope you enjoy!

BatMarch continues as we cover the 1988 DC comic Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin & art by Bernie Wrightson. The story follows “Batman's struggle against a messianic cult leader, Deacon Blackfire, who aims to control Gotham City. Blackfire recruits followers from the city's homeless, criminals, and dispossessed, and operates his cult from the sewers. Batman is captured, brainwashed, and even participates in a killing before Robin rescues him.”But first Anthony completes his metamorphosis into going full Weezer with new glasses. Cody's vision, among other things, is questionable. Jake's vision remains superior. The boys talk the latest DC film news. Cody's ranking has infected the podcast. Anthony has Jack Quaid energy. LOTR over Harry Potter every day. This comic has one of the best Batman villains: Deacon Blackfire. Cody's not keen on Jim Starlin's Batman/Bruce Wayne. There are actual stakes in this story with Batman being captured, drugged, and tortured. Cody's son is Jason Todd. We love to see Batman trip balls. This story may or may not be anti-transients. The Dark Knight Rises borrows tremendously from The Cult. This is one of the darkest Batman comics with pimps, hookers, and even Batman just letting a woman get killed in the streets. The art perfectly depicts Batman & Gotham with horror elements and imagery that reflects Batman's mental state throughout the story. Deacon Blackfire does things that some of Batman's main rogue gallery has never accomplished. Do we reveal what we'll do for BatMarch 2026? Is this the only use of Deacon Blackfire in Batman comics? It's been too long since we brought up Stephen Lang but he comes back for some stellar casting this episode. In this episode of Munsons at the Movies, the crew dives deep into the enigmatic and intense career of Tom Hardy, bringing back fan-favorite Guest Munson Mike Rodmaker to join the ride. From James not being able to shut up about Hardy to wild tales of Tommy #1 and Frankie Pullitzer, we explore the performer's evolution both on and off screen. We break down his early struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, how his near-career-ending Star Trek flop almost derailed everything, and how he used his self-proclaimed talent for lying to launch a powerful acting career. We weigh his legacy against Michael Fassbender from their drama school days, question his sometimes questionable accent work (yes, many of his films require subtitles), and highlight his breakout role in Inception, which introduced him to many American audiences. Of course, we gush over his unforgettable turns in Warrior, Peaky Blinders, The Dark Knight Rises, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Like the plot of Mad Max, Hardy's career is a chaotic, compelling ride—just the way we like it. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Do the Munsons feel in charge? Listen to find out.

We're kicking off the annual 3rd season of BatMarch with our 275th episode and a classic Batman comic: A Death In The Family. .. and YOU get to decide the fate of the podcast! This 1988 Batman story featuring the death of Robin Jason Todd is one of the most iconic DC Batman stories written by Jim Starlin, art by Jim Aparo, & edited by Dennis O'Neil. But first Cody once again lies & gaslights us into believing he's capable of being on time. Cody also falls in love with the MCU after years of disappointment. Is this story a hot bed of mediocrity? Jason Todd is low key a bitch & deserved to die. His mom might be the worst human alive. Anthony points out similarities between this book & HBO's The Penguin. Is this book racist & dated as fuck? Is Chris Jericho a piece of shit? Which one of Cody's friends got a DUI recently? Cody & Jake fuck with Shane Gillis. This comic features Jake & Anthony's favorite Batman color scheme. Is Superman a boot licker in this book? Are the choices for this story a little off? Does it feel like a Batman story? The fans voted for Jason Todd to get killed off. Is RFK Jason Todd? Would Trump give The Joker a position in his cabinet? Is Covid rotting Jake's brain or turning him into The Leader? [Digital Gonzo 2012] NOTE: This is a reissued episode from over 12 years ago. Please forgive the lower production values and boneheaded things I say. The epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's game-changing Dark Knight Trilogy. It's definitely not as straightforward as film two in the series because many people hate this film already, and an equal amount adore every inch of it. It's a tricky balancing act since so much of the most well-crafted and exceptional elements have already been discussed over three and a half hours reviewing Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Neither did I want this turning into a hail of disproportionate vitriol over perceived flaws. In this week's episode, we're watching a vampire movie chosen by the Patróns and it just happens to be set in and filmed in the seedy city of Pittsburgh, PA! It's 1992's "Innocent Blood." Special topics for your consideration include: bars that aren't there anymore, an absolutely batshit cast, a side of Robert Loggia we'd never seen before, and the most hometown movie we've ever covered (and that includes our Patreon episodes on both "Striking Distance" and "The Dark Knight Rises." Vampires! They are everywhere! Maybe just go listen to Episode 355- "Twilight" because lol. The regular lineup of links! The entire courtroom is quiet as each person walks up to the front and points. They point at this tiny miniature model of a movie theater sitting on the table. The tiny blue miniature-model seats are positioned just like they were when it all happened. 3 years ago - the emergency exit door to Theater 9 would open. A man with bright orange hair wearing tactical gear would walk into the theater - and open fire. At the midnight premiere of Batman The Dark Knight Rises. He is now sitting in the courtroom charged with 24 counts of murder, 140 counts of attempted murder, and 1 count of illegal explosives. But there are still so many questions - he told his psychiatrist months prior that he wanted to kill people. Why wasn't he put on a psychiatric hold? Why did he write a notebook filled with his plans to mail to her? Why did he, a neuroscience major, hate humanity so much to believe in something as vile as “human capital?” The idea that taking a life increases the value of your own.
