Every genre has a shadow canon — the writers who don't make the syllabus, don't sell out on Amazon, and rarely get the Netflix series. In science fiction, that shadow canon is where some of the most intellectually adventurous, politically serious and formally daring work of the twentieth century was done. Having opened the series with the big names — Wells, Verne, Poe, the Mount Rushmore of the genre — John and Ezri jump forward to the late 1960s and 1970s and turn to five authors most listeners won't know: Kate Wilhelm, Joanna Russ, John Sladek, John Brunner and Christopher Priest. Feminist SF, satirical SF, dystopian SF set in a Britain going to the dogs. The thread that connects them is "prescience", a word that keeps coming up. Were these writers really predicting the future – or just paying close enough attention to the present? In this episode: Why 1969 makes such a strange hinge point — Apollo 11 and the realisation of Goddard's cherry-tree dream, set against the assassinations of 1968, Vietnam, Prague, Altamont, and the first wave of environmental science Kingsley Amis, New Maps of Hell, and the New Wave: Moorcock's New Worlds, Ballard's "inner space", and SF's discovery that it could not avoid politics Kate Wilhelm — Hugo, Nebula and Locus winner for Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang, a co-founder of the Clarion Writers' Workshop who is now better known as a mystery writer Joanna Russ — The Female Man, written in 1970 but unpublished until 1975, and How to Suppress Women's Writing; a Westinghouse Science Talent Search finalist who chose literature as her weapon John Sladek — the satirist whose robot in Tik-Tok has had its "asimov circuits" go on the blink, and whose hoax book on a thirteenth sign of the zodiac proved people will believe anything stated with enough confidence John Brunner — the "Club of Rome Quartet", the novel that coined "worm" for self-replicating code, and Stand on Zanzibar, set in 2010 and unsettlingly familiar by the time we got there Christopher Priest — Fugue for a Darkening Island and A Dream of Wessex, the racial framing Priest himself later grappled with, and The Prestige (with David Bowie as Tesla) The big question under all of it: what is the difference between prescience and prediction — and is it significant that "prescience" contains the word "science"? On episode 156 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by film critic Jake Tropila discuss the next film in their Christopher Nolan series, The Prestige (2006). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to break down, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. Just a year after dazzling audiences with Batman Begins, Nolan returned with a film that would become one of the best films of his career, about two magicians dueling each other for the right to produce not only the best magic trick of all time, but to be the last man standing in a feud that costs more than anyone could imagine. In being a film about filmmaking as well as a stellar adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel, Nolan made his darkest, most cynical film to date; a twisted tale about the sacrifices it takes to create art, and the obsession that consumes someone when they are close to reaching an immortality level of fame. Ryan, Jay, and Jake break down their thoughts on the film, how much The Prestige is a cousin to Memento in terms of tone, where Christian Bale is within his career, why Hugh Jackman has never delivered a better performance than this, the power of David Bowie, the horrid accent of Scarlett Johansson, the logic of the film's twist, the wild differences between the film and the original novel, and if seeing/knowing a film's twist helps or hurts a film's rewatchability. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h15m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Christopher Nolan with a review of his next film, The Dark Knight. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. What happens when art, fiction and biography take us to places that unsettle, reorient and transform our sense of the world? On Radio 4's weekly discussion programme, Naomi Alderman moves from science fiction and land art to the landscape of the mind.Pioneering multimedia artist and musician Laurie Anderson discusses The Republic of Love, which she is performing at the Brighton Festival on 6th May. It's an immersive multi-sensory experience, in which she reinterprets past pieces, including her 80s hit Big Science, to illuminate the political and emotional strangeness of the present moment. (Her new album, Let X=X is released on May 8, 2026)Writer Nina Allan reflects on co-authoring The Illuminated Man, the biography her late husband, the novelist Christopher Priest, had started about J. G. Ballard. She explores Ballard's singular imagination, shaped by wartime internment in Shanghai, and his repeated motifs of flooded cities, drained swimming pools, and the violence seeping through gated communities seen in books including Empire of the Sun, Crash and The Drowned World. Art historian Joy Sleeman introduces the first major UK exhibition devoted to the American artist Nancy Holt, MoonSunStarEarthSkyWater, at the Goodwood Art Foundation (until November 2026). She reveals how Holt's land art, from her 18 feet long concrete Sun Tunnels to a posthumous installation Hydra's Head, invites viewers into cosmic and elemental landscapes where art and the environment meet.Producer: Katy Hickman Assistant Producer: Natalia Fernandez
Born into an upper-middle class family and raised in colonial Shanghai, JG Ballard's worldview was profoundly shaped by his internment by the occupying Japanese army in the Second World War — an experience that formed the basis of Empire of the Sun, the novel that brought him international fame. For his countless devoted fans his genius lies not only in this singular semi-autobiographical novel but in his outrageous, nihilistic, bravura works where cutting-edge technologies, social pathologies, and human nature collide — from 1973's Crash to his final novel Kingdom Come, which depicts the rise of the far-right in the UK. The novelist Christopher Priest began a biography of Ballard before his passing in 2024; his wife Nina Allan completed the work, in the process turning a book about Ballard's life into a tribute to both Ballard and Christopher. In this episode of the podcast, she shares her insights into both authors' lives and works and explores what they have to say to us in 2026. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Jonathan and Gary sit down and talk some new and forthcoming books, including our mutual choices for favorite book of the year so far. Gary starts by describing a book which he just finished and found particularly moving: The Illuminated Man: Life, Death and the Worlds of J. G. Ballard, Christopher Priest and Nina Allan, which he says reads more like a novel than a biography, with Priest's final illness becoming a significant theme in portions written by Allan. They also discuss The Recollections: Fragments from a Life in Writing, a collection of Priest's writings from Briardene Books. Gary then goes on to recommend Frances Spufford's Nonesuch as his book of the year so far, Jonathan recommends S.L. Huang's new novella The Language of Liars and then talks about what it's like to reread The Fellowship of the Ring after a long tome. Of course, there are the usual digressions into things like the New Wave, the popularity of romantasy, the immense length of some literary classics, and other matters. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode!
Director Christopher Nolan made his mark in the mid-2000s with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne. But between these two blockbusters, Nolan and Bale teamed up on another project, an adaptation of Christopher Priest's 1995 epistolary novel about two rival magicians in late 1800s England, with Hugh Jackman playing Bale's frenemy. In the mix are Michael Caine, Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Piper Perabo, and Andy Serkis, with David Bowie appearing as inventor Nikola Tesla. The modestly budgeted film successfully wowed audiences, earning over $100 million at the box office, and it scored Oscar noms for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. Now we're watching very closely to see if The Prestige still holds up twenty years later. Or, perhaps, its tricks no longer fool us… because you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Oh, no! Wrong movie! Abra-cadabra! This week on Major Issues, the guys dive into the massive 2026 crossover event Superman / Spider-Man #1. Mark Waid and Jorge Jiménez lead the charge with a story that finally pits the Man of Steel and the Web-Slayer against a Brainiac and Doc Ock alliance. The crew weighs in on whether the chemistry between Clark and Peter lives up to the hype and if Waid's love for comic history makes this a modern classic or just a heavy dose of nostalgia. The episode also breaks down the dense lineup of backup stories and the high-profile teams behind them. They shout out the Lois and MJ spotlight by Tom King and Jim Lee, the chaotic Jimmy Olsen short by Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber, and Christopher Priest's meta-story with Daniel Sampere. With additional contributions from creators like Sean Murphy, Jeff Lemire, Greg Rucka, and Gail Simone, the hosts debate if this oversized special justifies its price tag or if it's just a flashy celebration of the Big Two playing nice again. For every hero soaring overhead, there's a creator behind the scenes who deserves their shine. This Black History Month, we're giving flowers to the Black writers and artists who helped define comics as we know it. From Matt Baker and Billy Graham, to Denys Cowan and Christopher Priest, to Stephanie Williams and Khary Randolph, we follow a creative throughline across generations. We also highlight pioneering cartoonists like Jay Jackson and Jackie Ormes—the first African American woman cartoonist. We talk about the first Black creators we encountered as readers—and what that meant. Did they change the way we saw the page? Or were they just doing what great creators do: making unforgettable, good-ass comics? This is Unsung Ink—a celebration of the names and faces behind the comics we love.
On today's show, we have a special guest who you may know better as Jim Owsley. He has worked for Marvel and DC and has worked in music. Here he is, Christopher Priest. Plus, the usual news from Fun Ideas Productions.

We set off on a wild journey with returning guests Jimmy Palmiotti and Dan Panosian to discuss their new Marvel Knights: Punisher series set in the world of Joe Quesada's and Christopher Priest's The World to Come. Things start innocently enough, with the duo explaining their collaboration on "the most unforgiving Punisher story ever" and how they're bringing Frank Castle and his world to brutal new extremes. But things quickly spiral into a chaotic, tangent-filled conversation that veers wildly through stories about their careers, the comics industry, other creators, and working within the Marvel Knights legacy. This one goes off the rails early and often, but there's still plenty of Punisher talk to keep the Skull heads happy! As always, you can find Jimmy and Dan on all the major socials (Instagram, Bluesky, X): @jimmypalmiotti or @jpalmiotti and @urbanbarbarian. Red Sonja, the classic fiery red-haired warrior, is having quite a moment in 2025. With a feature film set to release on August 15th and a new comic book series, Sonja Reborn, launching on August 6th, it's time for a whole new generation to discover this fierce character. Jace is joined by Luke Lieberman to talk a bit about the film, its cast, and the plans for Red Sonja at SDCC 2025. Luke has long been involved with the character, having served as her steward for many years. This entails shepherding her through various projects, such as the upcoming film, but also in comics. On that front, just before the film is released, Dynamite is launching a new series written by legendary comics writer Christopher Priest. It will be a great jumping-on point for fans who may have never read about Sonja's adventures in comic form before. There's plenty in the series for longtime Red Sonja fans as well — not the least of which is artist Alessandro Miracolo's gorgeous linework. Check out the episode for more details, including SDCC plans!
In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE PRESTIGE (2006), from a script by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan, based on Christopher Priest's novel, the film is directed by Christopher Nolan. In turn-of-the-century London, two rival magicians — Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) and Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) —become locked in a deadly competition to create the ultimate illusion, each willing to sacrifice everything for supremacy. As their obsession deepens, they blur the lines between performance and reality, morality and madness. The film unfolds like a magic trick itself, revealing in its final moments the devastating cost of ambition, secrecy, and identity. The film clocks in at 2 h and 10 m, is rated PG-13 and is currently streaming on Hulu and to buy/rent on Prime Video. So adept at illusion, slight of hand, and fooling others that he was able to lead a double life… before being shot and killed performing his own magic trick. (The Magician Who Lived a Double Life) *** John Dee claimed he was visited by angels presented him with a secret language just angels, and the ability to perform a new magic they called Enochian. We'll look at his claims. (John Dee And The Language of Angels) *** A little boy goes fishing on a Spring day. He disappears. Another boy goes fishing nearby on the exact same day. He also disappears. A third child goes missing many years later in the same general area. What happened? (The Missing Fishing Boys) *** Venice's Poveglia Island was a quarantine center and mass grave for victims of bubonic plague – so it should come as no surprise it is considered one of the most haunted places in all of Europe. (Poveglia: The Island of Ghosts) *** It is one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries… what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke? We'll look at a few theories. (Lost Roanoke) *** You snap a selfie of the squad at brunch, but it's covered with shapes and light that definitely weren't present IRL. The whole thing is giving you major paranormal feels. Is it a loved one from the other side, making a cameo in your latest feed pic? Or a simple technological mishap? (The Trouble With Ghost Orbs)ABOUT WEIRD DARKNESS: Weird Darkness is a true crime and paranormal podcast narrated by professional award-winning voice actor, Darren Marlar. How did you land on this particular figure as the face of evil? What does he bring thematically to the world of Event Horizon? The first issue builds such thick atmosphere and creeping dread. What's the key to sustaining that across a miniseries without letting the horror peak too early?[Fun/silly question] Let's say you're stuck aboard the Event Horizon with one other comic book character of your choosing. Christopher Priest is one of the most influential writers in modern comics, known for his sharp wit, intricate storytelling, and groundbreaking contributions to the industry. He began his career at Marvel, becoming the company's first Black editor and working on titles like The Amazing Spider-Man and Power Man and Iron Fist before transitioning to writing full-time. His breakthrough came with Quantum and Woody for Valiant Comics, and he later redefined Black Panther in the late ‘90s, crafting the now-iconic interpretation that influenced the MCU. Priest has also left his mark on Deathstroke and Justice League for DC, Captain America and the Falcon for Marvel, and more recently, Vampirella for Dynamite, proving his storytelling prowess across genres and publishers. His new Vampirella #1 comes out today, 3/26, and his new collaboration with Joe Quesada, Marvel Knights: The World to Come, was just announced for a June release. You can't find Priest online; just buy his work. Support the show

When Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti were handed creative control over some of Marvel's B- and C-list characters in 1998, they offered the job of writing Black Panther to Christopher Priest…who didn't want the assignment! But Priest was eventually convinced to take Quesada and Palmiotti's Coming to America-inspired suggestion to bring T'Challa to Brooklyn and turn it into a radical reinvention of the character, years ahead of its time in merging superheroes with international political intrigue. Much of the basis for the MCU's mega-popular take on Black Panther and Wakanda begins in this run, but Priest was convinced it wouldn't work without a white point-of-view character directly inspired by one of TV's Friends. We look at one of the sharpest, funniest, most daring ongoing series of the Iron Age.

Ahora a escuchar.
