Carrie Buck of the infamous Buck v Bell US Supreme Court case was the first in a long line of Americans who were involuntarily sterilized after the growing popularity of the practice of eugenics. That was in the 1920s. It's a practice that continued clear into the 70s and even so today. In this episode, we hear the story of Kelli Dillon who was sterilized against her will while serving a prison sentence. The history of Black Genocide started many years ago, in Act II, Hyman tells the story of a man who was so badly publicly lynched that an entire celebrated the death of a man so egregiously that it captured the attention of the entire nation. In the sixth chapter, Dr. Hyman interviews Donald Glenn, Director of the Office of Multicultural, Diversity, and Inclusion Affairs at Grand Canyon. Attending a rural, predominantly white institution, JD and Donald reflect on college life and campus racial tensions during the 2008 presidential race and subsequent election.
Chapter 5 takes a controversial turn especially and in light of the pending presidential election. In this episode, Dr. Hyman dives deep into the culture of presidential misconduct and what it really means to hold our leaders accountable. JD doesn't hold back any punches as he forces listeners to reckon with their own actions in how they've propped up their leaders and made them into idols.
In the fourth chapter of the story, Dr. Hyman meets with Andrew Williams III, author of the article "Facing My Own Blackness." In the article, Andrew tells the story of how he reconciled the meaning and weight of his race and what it means to face the world––in a world where his race is often vilified. JD explores these mores with Andrew and reconciles his own race and how he came to terms with that same world.
