This week on Cyber Sense, Making Sense of Scams, Lester Kiewit looks at the growing problem of pig butchering scams, where criminals build fake romantic relationships with victims before manipulating them into handing over money. The discussion comes as two more suspects are arrested in connection with an alleged R14 million romance fraud targeting an elderly woman, while another case under investigation involves an elderly woman who met a man through a dating app and was allegedly swindled out of money. George & Giles Leading Major Renovation at Lexington

Welcome to The Turf Zone podcast. This episode features the article “George & Giles Leading Major Renovation at Lexington” written by Beck Stanley, Executive Director of the Virginia Turfgrass Council. It’s been more than two decades since Lexington, Virginia woke up to the good fortune of golf holes being crafted into its rolling mountain landscape. That drought is ending with the highly anticipated Lester George/Vinny Giles renovation of Lexington Golf & Country Club, one of Virginia's oldest clubs and certainly among its most beautiful layouts. George is following the iconic Ellis Maples, and the VTC was fortunate enough to visit the site in April to see the progress. George inherits good bones at LGCC, better views than any of his previous Virginia projects, and an intact grounds staff that includes Peter Danaher and Kramer Johnson. The Club will unveil in 2027 a new clubhouse, practice facility, the renovated Maples course, and even a new name – Tribrook Club, an homage to its original farmland roots. Tribrook will land in the realm of George's other notable Virginia projects like Kinloch and Ballyhack, probably right between the two. I italicize these courses because they aren't places. They are works of art, and although the former was better received, there is no question Ballyhack has had a major impact on golf tourism in the Roanoke region at the hands of traveling Dormie Club members hellbent on swiping plastic. This Lexington renovation, on the other hand, is a thoughtful collaboration of resources between the Club and Washington & Lee University, mirroring how this is the first historic George/Giles course renovation collaboration. W & L's men's and women's golf teams succeed in the top tier of Division III. Last year, the men's team had the national player and coach of the year and finished fourth. This year, the men finished sixth, and two players tied for third place. The women finished fourth at the NCAA Division III championship, the best performance in the school's history. I sat down with George, Giles, and Superintendent Peter Danaher to discuss the progress, and how golf in Virginia continues to evolve to meet the needs of a growing, diverse game. At the VTC, we are certainly proud to be a part of that evolution as we continue to represent Virginia golf courses and golf professionals, both public and private, and to fight for the interests of the broader turf industry in the General Assembly. What drew us to Lexington's renovation was its Maples history, George's and Giles' participation, and the chance to witness the shaping and renovation process firsthand in a mountainous terrain. The first thing to notice is the tree removal – more than 2/3rds were removed to make way for higher, longer tee boxes and open up broad mountain vistas, but it also restores the original agricultural look of the property, and as so many legislators and industry outsiders forget, turf is agriculture. Golf courses protect land and natural environments, prevent erosion, and steward water resources in a way no housing or commercial development ever could. George and Giles seem to enjoy the nuts and bolts of renovating golf courses, like a Twain character tricking everyone around into thinking that whitewashing a fence is fun. But in reality and beneath that appearance — and far separated from the benevolent forces making such projects happen — are two committed, serious minds collaborating, yearning for legacy, blending engineering and playability with how young players might see this game fifty, a hundred years from now. Of course, that all comes with making the course fun and playable for all skill levels. The many retiree members of Tribrook will appreciate the attention George and Giles have given to making the course adaptable. “The course will be enjoyable from 7,100 yards all the way down to less than 4,000,” George commented. At almost every turn of our tour, both murmured aloud thoughts on making shots longer, landing areas tighter, pushing both the game and the course to be more. Their shapers and project managers from Aspen Corporation were on hand, furiously cutting bunkers with pickaxes and perfecting mounds and visuals. Their professionalism and obsession with detail did not go unnoticed, down to the inch on distance readings and slopes. Adam Bagwell of Aspen was especially tuned in, completely aware of every little nuance of the project and rapid to answer questions as they arose. Giles, the Lynchburg native who played on four Walker Cup teams, captained a winning squad in 1993, won the U.S. Amateur, British Amateur, U.S. Senior Amateur, and countless other tournaments too many to list, has done as much for the game of golf in Virginia as any one man could in a lifetime. Aside from being the low amateur at the Masters in 1968 and the 1973 U.S. Open, he still had all this time on his hands to accrue a valuable vault of stories, my favorites being those about Alvis Hylton, his instructor and head pro at Boonsboro Country Club who he claims, “could always fix my swing.” Hylton went from a worker on the N&W Railroad to golf professional following an accident that injured permanently his left arm, an unlikely sequence of events that led him to Vinny. Figures like Hylton may now be forgotten to most, but we would all be wise to remember him. As we traveled over the raw earth, George immediately took us to the new 6th green. It's a short par 3 with a 30-yard deep tee box, offering wide latitude for staff to set the hole up for competition. George began instructing his Aspen crew to fix minor details on the visual, the barely visible bunker line to the left of the green reminiscent of Seth Raynor's style. “The new sixth hole was created to make room for the new practice facility. It gave us this great opportunity to build a Raynor/McDonald template hole known as a Biarritz. The par 3 is surrounded on both sides by trench bunkers, with an amazing horizon view and swale in the center. The green is seventy paces deep,” George told us. “We have to serve everyone with this design. That means a new look, a new excitement for past, present, and future members. Our changes have done that.” The sun began to set on our visit, and we wrapped up our tour of the grounds before I took the long walk back to where I had parked, by the old clubhouse at the back of a small neighborhood just outside of town. There was a kid in his front yard chipping balls into a small net, and a few had trickled down the road into the asphalt. I walked them back up the hill and asked him what he loved about golf. “It's the best game there is,” he said. “And when I get older, I'm going to play at Washington and Lee.” More info on the Architect: Lester George incorporates his creativity and passion for the game of golf in every golf course design. The blending of his terrain reading ability and his lively interest in the history of golf enables him to visualize imaginative course designs. With over 35 years' experience in the design, renovation and restoration of numerous golf courses throughout the United States and Japan, Lester has been established as a leading golf course architect. Serving as a design coordinator for Golf Services International, Lester worked with other golf course architects studying the intricacies of course design. During this time, he co-founded Virginia Golf Development. Then, in 1991, Lester opened his own firm, Colonial Golf Design, Inc., which has evolved into George Golf Design, Inc. Clifford Lester is a retired professor of photography at Cypress College and a student of the Jewish experience. Inspired by his mother, Ursula Lowenbach Foster, a Holocaust survivor, Clifford has followed in her footsteps of embracing life. To honor her brother, Ernst, who was killed in Auschwitz, Ursula showed everyone around her that life was something to be grateful for, something to celebrate.Today, twenty years after her passing, Clifford finds himself much closer to his Jewish roots, and much more appreciative of his life. Grateful for his family, his friends, and the opportunity to share photographic adventures with students, it is through the artistic avenues of the photographic lens that Clifford shares his perspective on life. Even in his teen years, Clifford began to notice the beauty in things through the viewfinder of his camera that other people would just walk by. He knew he had to bring this beauty and light into the lives of others. At the present time, after a career of 27 years as a studio advertising photographer, and 18 years of teaching at Cypress College, Clifford is enjoying his retirement by committing to perhaps his most meaningful project, remembering Holocaust Survivors. Clifford says that the goal of these images is to “capture the Faith and courage of those who survived, and to honor the memory of those loved ones lost, so the memory and lessons of the Holocaust will never be forgotten.”This incredible group, the survivors of the Holocaust, have left a legacy for the generations that follow–a legacy of loving, caring for others, and giving purpose to their lives. Many are people of Faith, guided by an intense love of Torah and G-d, all are moved to celebrate their given days.We pray that through these images and the lives they have lived, their spirit will forever carry on and Bless those who follow. If you know any Holocaust  survivors who would like to be photographed please reach out to Clifford Lester.www.cliffordlester.comwww.cypresscollege.edu/holocaust-education-initiative/survivors-gallery/www.instagram.com/clifford1717/

Discover how a longtime educator-turned-nonprofit leader uses governance, compassion, and community empowerment to build organizations that truly last. In this episode, you'll hear stories from hospices, classrooms, and European projects that reveal what sustainable leadership looks like in the real world.   Key Takeaways: Strong governance and clear structures are critical for nonprofits to compete with larger institutions and remain sustainable over time. When leaders actively identify and nurture the potential in others, they can create learning pathways that help people “leap forward” despite limited opportunities. Third-sector organizations are still businesses at their core; they require sound leadership, financial sustainability, and strategic planning just like for-profit entities. Compassion, kindness, and genuine giving are not “soft extras” but essential qualities of modern leadership, especially for women balancing multiple responsibilities. Networking and mentorship—both in person and online—provide vital emotional support and perspective for leaders who often feel they are carrying the weight of an organization alone.   “How do you make it easier for people to leap forward when they haven't had the opportunities?”   “To me, businesses in the third sector are no different to businesses in the first or the second. They still have to be sustainable; they still have to have good governance; they still have to have good leadership.”   “I think all along the line we're giving, we're giving our knowledge, aren't we? We're passing on something that we've learned from somebody else, and if they didn't share their knowledge with us, then we wouldn't have anything to share…”  - Christine Lester   Christine Miller Lester is an international leadership, Learning & Development, and organizational transformation specialist with more than 40 years of experience helping mission-driven organizations develop leaders, build learning cultures, and create sustainable impact through people-centered leadership and organizational excellence.   Reach out to Christine Lester at: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinelester1/       Let's Work Together to Amplify Your Leadership + Influence1. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 3347: Liberty Bell Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 4 July 2026, is Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell, previously called the State House Bell or Old State House Bell, is an iconic symbol of American independence located in Philadelphia. Originally placed in the steeple of Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell today is located across the street from Independence Hall in the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park. The bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from the London-based firm Lester and Pack, later renamed the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, and was cast with the lettering "Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof". The bell first cracked when rung after its arrival in Philadelphia, and was twice recast by local workmen John Pass and John Stow, whose surnames appear on the bell. In its early years, the bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations. It is likely that the Liberty Bell was among the bells in Philadelphia to ring on July 8, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was first read to the public, although no contemporary account of the ringing is known to exist. After American independence was secured, it fell into relative obscurity for some years. In the 1830s, the bell was adopted as a symbol by abolitionist societies, who dubbed it the "Liberty Bell". It acquired its distinctive large crack sometime in the first half of the 19th century—a widespread story claims it cracked while ringing after the death of Chief Justice John Marshall in 1835. In the late 19th and early 20th century, it was several times sent on journeys to large expositions, and was further damaged by souvenir hunters. After World War II, Philadelphia allowed the National Park Service to take custody of the bell, while retaining ownership. The bell was used as a symbol of freedom during the Cold War and was a popular site for protests in the 1960s. It was moved from its longtime home in Independence Hall to a nearby glass pavilion on Independence National Historical Park in 1976, and then to the larger Liberty Bell Center adjacent to the pavilion in 2003. The bell has been featured on coins and stamps, and its name and image have been widely used by corporations. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Saturday, 4 July 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Liberty Bell on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Danielle.

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

People who are famous for just being famous have been around forever but this weeks Legend Orson Bean gladly took that role, calling himself a "Neo-celebrity." Orson is being far too modest about a career that started out with a magic act, evolved into stand up comedy, was featured on Broadway and in top NYC cabarets, logged many hours on game and talk shows, and worked steadily as a guest star on tv and in movies. Orson also helped found a Laurel and Hardy society and a (for the time) radical primary school. So while Orson called himself a "Neo-celebrity" we prefer to think of him as a "renaissance man". As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Orson Bean? From the days of black and white tv, here's a running gag between Orson and host Bud Collier on To Tell the Truth.https://youtu.be/qo8pM9LaojM?si=ueaOI_ZENiukCfzC Orson was such a game show stalwart that even a cameo -- here on The Match Game -- would bring the house down. https://youtu.be/YLDR8oc8k6Y?si=2eH1hOHp6yjh8iz6 Orson had a quick wit so he was a natural guest for talk shows including this appearance with Johnny Carson. https://youtu.be/LpFZOp9bdCY?si=K3-jA3nRYO0typ-A Orson found some prime roles in his career including the eccentric Dr. Lester in Being John Malkovich. https://youtu.be/DSGYElDi38s?si=j6AfFlMnG_XgVQUk

Success doesn't always bring us closer to God.Sometimes, it causes us to forget Him.In this message, we continue our journey Through the Bible by tracing Israel's story through Judges, Samuel, the Kings, and the divided kingdom. Again and again, we see the same pattern: God blesses His people, they become comfortable, and their hearts slowly drift away.Using passages from Judges, 1 Samuel, 1 Kings, and 2 Kings, we explore:• Why Israel repeatedly turned away from God after entering the Promised Land• The danger of doing "whatever seems right" in our own eyes• Why Israel demanded a king instead of trusting God• The rise and fall of Saul, David, and Solomon• How compromise slowly leads to spiritual decline• Why blessing is not always the same as God's approval• The danger of putting our hope in political power instead of God• How to recognize the subtle ways our hearts drift from the LordThis message isn't just about Israel's history. It's about our tendency to forget God when life is going well.Spiritual drift rarely happens overnight. It happens one compromise...one distraction...one act of partial obedience at a time.“The tragedy of our time is that the situation is desperate, but the saints are not.” — Vance Havner

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church invited the Geelong Advertiser into its new Geelong meeting hall to show the public that, "At the end of the day, we're just ordinary people."So... how did that work out?Get-A-Life takes a critical look at the resulting article and asks why Bruce Hales, having condemned "reputation-seeking" as a bane, keeps running back to Rupert Murdoch for more punishment. The article poses the Geelong B-team of Peter Connell, Lester Earl and Damian Earl in their strange, windowless bunker of a "gospel hall," where they take turns feeding the bemused journalist a frothy brew of lies, evasion and, startlingly, one rather damning nugget of actual factual truth. We provide a sober and measured commentary, illustrated by profound excerpts from the ministry of Bruce D. Hales, and a thrilling video clip of Gareth pretending to be best mates with a bunch of assorted tradesmen.Peter Connell also reveals, for the first time, how Bruce financed his $70 million Sydney property portfolio. So what are the Brethren, at the end of the day? Summer road trips sound relaxing… until this crew gets involved.Today's episode starts innocently enough with everyone sharing their summer travel plans. Arkansas suddenly becomes the hottest college destination nobody expected, Michigan's crystal-clear water gets hyped like the Caribbean, and then WalletHub drops a bombshell ranking the best and worst states for road trips. Somehow Missouri lands near the bottom thanks to safety concerns, and suddenly everyone is defending their favorite states like they're running for governor. Then things get weird.A hypothetical question sends the entire room into chaos: How much money would it take for you to live in Rhode Island and never leave? Some people are perfectly happy with seafood and lighthouses for a cool five million dollars. Others need hundreds of millions to compensate for never seeing another professional sports team again. Somehow this turns into discussions about private jets, concerts, and whether rollerblading in a Dunkin' parking lot counts as entertainment.Because this is a daily comedy show, the conversation naturally takes another hard left turn into the worst names parents have ever given their children. The gang debates names like Lester, Bertha, Eunice, Gaylord, Todd, and Hortense, with strong opinions about which names deserve comebacks and which ones sound more like plumbing parts than human beings.Along the way, there are hot takes on old-school names, celebrity confusion involving Vin Diesel's actual name, memories of cool people named Wanda, and enough sarcasm to fill several road trips. This daily comedy show somehow manages to combine travel rankings, financial planning, retirement fantasies, and naming conventions into one giant, ridiculous conversation that only The Rizzuto Show could turn into entertainment. So buckle up, lock your doors if you're driving through Missouri, and enjoy another daily comedy show filled with road trip debates, celebrity confusion, and the kind of weird discussions that happen when friends with microphones have entirely too much free time.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Voice of Insurance

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2026 52:27

Today's podcast is a masterclass with an expert in a class of business that has exploded with growth over the past decade. M&A insurance is a broad church that holds a large number of products that are all related to inter-company transactions. Representations and Warranties, potential tax liabilities, litigation risk and other contingencies related to M&A are the subject of this incredibly innovative segment of insurance. Three decades ago Alistair Lester was in on the ground floor as the class of business developed out of the D&O market. Today this is a class that is producing $10-12bn in annual revenue and can put out very meaningful maximum limits of around $1.5bn dollars for any one deal. But it's a class that most of us won't be familiar with, or perhaps one that some of us might think we won't be suited to because we imagine it's full of people who first trained as lawyers and then got into insurance. Now Gallagher's CEO of Private Equity and M&A for Europe the Middle East and Africa, Alistair is proof that this is a class where traditional insurance brokers can thrive. This is one of the most energetic and fun conversations I have had on the show for some time. Alistair's passion and enthusiasm are contagious and through the course of this interview I learned an awful lot about this exciting class and its enormous commercial potential. We all know insurance is often a grudge purchase and always marked down as a cost, but here it can be an investment that immediately pays for itself many times over. That's incredibly rare and perhaps explains why this class has so much opportunity and is giving Cyber and renewables a run for their money for the title of highest-growth segment of the global insurance market. Time with Alistair makes it clear that despite growing tenfold over the past decade, this maturing class has a huge amount of growth left in it. So listen on. If after 45 minutes you're not as enthusiastic as Alistair or I, I'd be enormously surprised. LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo, now part of Sapiens: https://www.advantagego.com
