SERIES 2 EPISODE 35: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Congratulations, Kevin McCarthy on a unique feat: impeaching YOURSELF. McCarthy and the Republicans got their wish – the framework of a Joe Biden Impeachment and in less than 72 hours they have so COMPLETELY obscured it and overshadowed it and knocked it off the front pages that not even the right wing outlets are talking about IT, they're talking about McCARTHY. It's going so well for Soon-To-Be-Former-House-Speaker Kevin McCarthy that a senior Republican lawmaker has now told Semafor News that this ends when quote, “The whole family kills each other. I think we're close to that right now. We are in maybe the Godfather TWO stage.” McCarthy that he met with his House Conference, dared them to oust him as Speaker, and then swore at them. “Go ahead. I'm not (effing) scared of it… move the (effing) motion.” And a Republican Congressional aide says that the Freedom Caucus members are quote “hellbent on losing the majority” for the GOP in the House. McCarthy, who was not smart enough to KNOW the story of Newt Gingrich's implosion under similar impeachment circumstances in 1998 (let alone use it as a template to avoid creating his current drama in which he is not only the hostage but the guy who showed the hostage takers how to TAKE the hostage) is probably not smart enough – when it comes to this - to quit. So the House will suspend while they hose down what's left of him off the walls and then if we're all real quiet, through our windows and doors will come the faint but unmistakable sound of President Biden laughing his ass off. Meanwhile, the Kristen Welker “Big Splash” sitdown for her Meet The Press Debut was arguably WORSE than expected. They throw clips on Nightly News with Lester Holt and in one he says to her he could've pardoned himself and he makes up stories about legal authorities and she smiles vapidly at him and instead of saying “You do know we all know you're lying” or even just “honey please” she says “even if you were re-elected?” as if she were asking some nitwit on Dateline whether or not he'd go to the prom with the murder victim again. And she asks him what he thinks about Hunter Biden which is like seeing “For my next question, President Trump, free topic! Say whatever you want!” And THEN HE says “You mean because I challenge an election, they want to put me in jail?” and instead of saying something like – well, anything – she stares vapidly and they cut to Lester and Lester stares vapidly and then says “He had a pretty interesting answer” and you are reminded that Lester reached the apogee of his journalistic career in his cameo at the end of the movie “The Fugitive” in 1993. And as the GOP implodes, I sit here and I almost pray that somebody in the Democratic Party has the vision to say “the Republicans are in trouble, let's make sure we make it far worse for them. THIS is the time: release the Comer," As the prospect looms that McCarthy will be ousted and somebody - maybe Oversight Chairman James Comer - will succeed him, now is the moment to push the 2015 allegations that surfaced when Comer ran for governor: He was credibly accused ago of physically and mentally abusing his college girlfriend from the early 1990's, and credibly accused calling her mother and threatening the girlfriend's life. And credibly accused of becoming “enraged” after finding that she had written-in his real name on the paperwork at the abortion clinic the quote “Pro-life” unquote Comer had driven her to, to end THEIR pregnancy oh and she still had that paperwork in a safe deposit box. B-Block (24:28) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Lauren Boebert of the anti-drag party, is dating a bar owner who reportedly hosted a drag party. Drew Barrymore re-starts her talk show even though the writers are on strike. That makes her a SCAB. Bill Maher re-starts his "comedy" show even though the writers are on strike (and he insults the writers in the process) and he is a SCAB. (32:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I didn't know until 2009 that Maher and I met at Cornell in 1978 and in less than a minute he'd been so obnoxious I was ready to sock him. In a terrific irony considering his scabbing for his corporate masters, way back then he called me a "corporate sellout." I know the audio is not great on a lot of these, but it is the best that I can find. Many of these messages were recorded in the early to mid 1900's, and the audio recording equipment was not great then. But! The messages are worth the extra focus that it takes to get it.

Welcome to Wednesday as Ford waxes generous and also talks about their big dreams for hybrid F150s. We also cover some of the conversations at the Auto News Congress. Finally, we talk about good ‘ol Goodwill finding its ecommerce stride. When asked yesterday about the looming UAW strike, Ford CEO, Jim Farley, described the latest contract proposal to UAW as their "most generous offer in 80 years." However, the UAW might strike selected plants if no deal is achieved with Detroit's big three automakers before the looming deadline. Ford believes its F-150 could soon rank as the top-selling hybrid model, according to Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue. Ford is set to release an updated 2024 F-150, including a new hybrid variant, aiming to quadruple hybrid sales in the next two years with F-150 and Maverick compact pickup as focal pointsCurrently, 10% of F-150s sold are hybrids. Ford sold an estimated 25,000-30,000 F-150 hybrids in the first half of this year, while Toyota sold 57,208 RAV4 hybrids in the same period. As U.S. legislators are pushing for an accelerated transition to EVs, Dealers have been left to bridge consumers' knowledge gaps according to panelists at the 2023 Automotive News Congress Retail Future panel. Our own Damon Lester and other Dealers highlighted key barriers to EV adoption, including range anxiety, affordability, and the challenges of establishing home charging infrastructures.Damon Lester, owner of Lester Automotive Group, emphasized the importance of charging infrastructure, stating that everyday use of an EV isn't feasible without it. He remarked, "We urge consumers to ask those types of questions because many are not looking at EV ownership through that lens." Lester proposed an expansion of incentives, suggesting, "We are urging some legislators to put a moratorium on the income-based formula for incentives, to make it open again for a certain period of time so that everyone is able to get them."Thrift store shopping has never been more popular, and it's starting to feel more native to younger generations as GoodwillFinds.com, the online platform launched by Goodwill last year, has expanded its reach to over 500 stores with the addition of four new regional members. Many Goodwill regions had previously been selling on external platforms, like eBay. There is one fact no sane man can quarrel with ... everything has a beginning and an end. But some men aren't sane; thus it isn't always so! And It Comes Out Here by Lester del Rey, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. There are many ways you can support The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Your reviews and ratings on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, comments on our YouTube channel and there's a link in the description where you can buy us a cup of coffee. If you choose to buy us a cup of coffee and tell us your name when you do, we'll thank you here on the podcast. Everything you do to help us allows us to produce more episodes faster. Thank you. Lester del Rey was an interesting fellow. He often told people his real name was Ramon Felipe Alvarez-del Rey. But his sister confirmed that his name was in fact Leonard Knapp. He told people his father was a poor sharecropper but that's not true either. It seems Lester del Rey was destined to become a great storyteller. He was born in 1915, some say he was born in Clydesdale, Minnesota, but I looked and looked and couldn't find Clydesdale, Minnesota. Wonder if that was made up too? His mother died shortly after he was born, his father hired a woman to care for him and his older sister, eventually marrying the woman. But she didn't able to connect with young Lester, actually Leonard. In 1931, at the age of 16, he moved by himself to Washington D.C. to attend George Washington University on a scholarship. He didn't stay long. For the next two years he supported himself doing a variety of odd jobs and writing poetry. He sold 20 poems to various publications before coming to the realization that poetry was not his thing. In 1938 he wrote a science fiction short story on a dare from a friend after he criticized the work of a professional writer. He wrote “The Faithful” in one day and submitted it to Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Eight days later he got a check in the mail and his professional writing career had begun. By the way, you will hear “The Faithful” in a future episode. Let's open the pages of Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine in February 1951, turn to page 62 for And It Comes Out Here by Lester del Rey… In two days on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, The whole fighting fleet of the United Nations is caught in Kreynborg's marvelous, unique trap. The Nightfly is the debut solo album from Donald Fagen. Fagen and his Steely Dan partner Walter Becker had released the Gaucho album in late 1980, and Becker was having a lot of trouble. His girlfriend died of a drug overdose in their apartment, and he was sued for several million dollars. Shortly after that he was hit by a taxi, which shattered his leg. Steely Dan disbanded in 1981, and Becker moved to Maui. Fagen wanted “The Nightfly” to be autobiographical, and without the irony and biting nature of Steely Dan. There is a lot of adolescence and innocence in these songs, reflecting back on Fagen's time growing up. The album is also one of the first to be recorded entirely in digital. Steely Dan had tried this approach fo“Gaucho,” but it didn't work out and they reverted to analog. Audiophiles gravitate to The Nightfly, and EQ Magazine ranks it as one of the top 10 Best Recorded Albums of All Time, up there with The Beatles' “Sergeant Peppers” and The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds.”Donald Fagan had problems with depression after recording “The Nightfly,” and largely disappeared from the music scene through the rest of the 80's. Fagan said in 2006 that he hasn't listened to "The Nightfly" since making it. However, he did record two other albums which are considered to form "The Nightfly Trilogy," including Kamakiriad" from 1993 and "Morph the Cat" from 2006. There would also be a reunion of Steely Dan later on.Bruce presents this jazzy album for this week's episode. I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)This lead single is also the track that leads off the album. "I.G.Y." stands for International Geophysical Year, which was a project that lasted between July 1957 and December 1958. It encompassed eleven earth science projects and included collaboration between East and West. The song reflects the positivity of that time and collaboration. The song was released in September 1982 and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of November. The NightflyThis track imagines a late night DJ named Lester who plays jazz on WJAZ out of Baton Rouge, and also takes calls from conspiracy theorists. is about a spiritual quest. While not released as a single, this song did receive some airplay on FM stations in the 80's.Ruby BabyAlthough heavily arranged with close harmonies by Fagen, this is a cover song originally performed by the Drifters in 1956. A number of artists have covered it over time, including Dion (number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962), Billy "Crash Craddock, Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder, and Bobby Darin.New FrontierThis fun single did not break into the top 40, but it was a frequent video on the then-new MTV channel. The idea of the song is that an adolescent boy is bringing a girl over to his parents' bomb shelter for a good time. "Yes, we're going to have a wing ding..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop (from the motion picture "Tootsie" )Dustin Hoffman stars in this cross-dressing romance comedy about an actor disguising himself as a woman to land a job. STAFF PICKS:Steppin' Out by Joe JacksonRob starts the staff picks with a song inspired by Jackson's time in New York City. The song reflects the excitement of a drive around town, and hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is off the album "Night and Day," which reflects New York City during the day on side 1, and the City during the night on side 2.Mexican Radio by Wall of VoodooWayne's staff pick is a weird one. This new wave act describes listening to the broadcasts of high-wattage unregulated Mexican radio stations whose signals were strong enough to be picked up in small town U.S.A. Wall of Voodoo's $15,000 video would be on constant repeat on MTV.Maneater by Hall & Oates Lynch brings us a big Hall & Oates hit that spent four weeks at number 1 on the charts. The song describes a woman who is bad news, only looking for money. The video features a live panther, that got loose in the rafters of the set at one point, prompting a hasty retreat from Darryl Hall. The sax part is played by Charles "Mr. Casual" DeChant, who also appears in the video during his solo. She Sheila by The ProducersBruce finishes up the staff picks with Atlanta's own The Producers. This is the big single off the band's second album "You Make the Heat." It went to number 48 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, and alternates between an ethereal synth part and a high energy New Wave sound. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bonzo's Montreux by Led ZeppelinJohn Bonham's live drum solo closes out this week's podcast.

This week, Camp Jupiter prepares for battle, and Apollo heads out on his quest (for love?). Meg and Apollo have a sweet bonding moment. Apollo drools over Reyna some more. He sneaks out with Don and Lavinia to see some dryads and Peaches, and naturally, has to perform a remix of his hours-long Jason song (10 minute version…sad dryad version). Apollo, Reyna, and Meg head towards Sutro Tower and Apollo tries to ask Reyna out. It doesn't go well for him. However, it goes great for Reyna, who laughs harder than she has in years! Love that for her! We discuss the merits of the “friendzone” and hate men for a good few minutes. But not all men. Men who listen to us are Good. Also… does anyone understand angel numbers? What does 111 mean? ————————————————————— SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/camphalfpod?fan_landing=true SEND US AN AUDIO MESSAGE: https://www.speakpipe.com/Camphalfpod JOIN OUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/gzHYsUbdgr --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/camp-half-pod/support

We are in peak form this episode. Manasa blames the heat. Erin has AC, but she did have the plague while recording this. We reflect on how Apollo stopped climate change by giving the sun some therapy. Perhaps we should try that out. But it's time for a funeral. Manasa thinks that we should be done grieving by now. Lester is an Aries. We meet up with Tyson and Ella. Ella does tattoos now. Then we go burn Jason!!! Wolf Mama shows up to have a chat with Apollo. Apollo takes a nap and we get some background on Tarquinius and the Sybil. They get a group together for a quest to go to the tomb — Hazel, Lavinia, and Meg. Also Apollo, but he apparently doesn't count as a full person. Yikes! Manasa wishes that the trials of Apollo were him being tried for his war crimes. ————————————————————— SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/camphalfpod?fan_landing=true SEND US AN AUDIO MESSAGE: https://www.speakpipe.com/Camphalfpod JOIN OUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/gzHYsUbdgr --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/camp-half-pod/support

Actor Kurt Leitner played Lester, one of the students in the classroom of Dead Poet's Society, a film that was highly influential for Matt. Kurt tells us about going from being a body double on set to becoming one of the supporting poets, organically coming up with the name Lester for his character as well as the character name of Spaz, his chicken walk making it into the trailer, and why his character didn't stand on a desk in support of Mr. Keating. Plus, we hear about the truly once in a lifetime experience of being directed in a playground atmosphere by Peter Weir and improvising with Robin Williams. Hosted on Acast.
