Ten years ago, Pearl Jam headlined a festival called the Global Citizen's Festival in Central Park where the mission was to raise funding in order to end world poverty. They were joined by the likes of Beyonce, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Sting and others who wanted to get this message across. It was their only US show in 2015 and was broadcast on network TV, something that Pearl Jam hasn't had a lot of opportunities to do in their history. The 12-song set certainly has it's highlights. For one time one time only, Beyonce got to share the stage with Eddie for a performance of Redemption Song. It's not something that's gone over well across the community over the years, but we'll give it it's due and discuss the connection the two of them were able to make on stage together. The other big moment from this show is Ed getting to tell the origin story of Unthought Known, having wrote it in a hotel that overlooked Central Park. We'll also talk about Big Bird, pirate rabbis, dating origin stories and why Bill Nye should probably stay away from rock 'n' roll stages. We invite our Patron, Richard Green, on to talk about his personal experience at this show, and if you stay tuned until the end you'll hear a eulogy for a loved one who left us too soon. In Arkansas and around the country, private equity groups have a growing financial interest in health care. While private equity investment can revive struggling hospitals or reinvigorate stagnant ones, critics accuse some of loading hospitals with debt, stripping their assets, and leaving communities to deal with the aftermath. That's what happened in Hope, Arkansas, last year when the owner of Wadley Regional Medical Center, Dallas-based Steward Healthcare Group, declared bankruptcy. The hospital was immediately at risk of closing, but fortunately there were leaders in the community who would not let that happen. In this episode of the Wonks at Work podcast, we learn more about this cautionary tale from Clay Hobbs, chief operating officer of Pafford Medical Services, which partnered with the community to save their local hospital.

Orioles hope to sing October redemption song

It's been a year since Baltimore sports fans suffered the first in the latest series of humiliations from their teams who raise their hopes with stellar regular season performances, only to crash and burn in the postseason. In the space of four months in late 2023 and early 2024, Charm City athletic supporters took shots in their collective guts from the Ravens and Orioles, who each won their respective divisions, then whimpered out of the playoffs. The Ravens have stumbled a bit out of the gate so far in 2024, placing their Super Bowl aspirations in a bit of jeopardy. It falls, then, on the Orioles to sing a redemption song for the area faithful who have waited ever so patiently in the short and long term. Yes, it's been a year since the Orioles won the American League East with 101 victories, the first playoff berth in seven years. But the World Series drought for this once proud franchise is at 41 years, and possibly counting. In a certain sense, Bird backers have been like Ralphie, the kid from “A Christmas Story,” who yearned to find a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree, but, more often than not, got a bunny suit. The BB gun seemed oh-so-close last October, when the Birds entered the playoffs with the top seed in the American League and home field advantage throughout, a straight shot to the Fall Classic. Or so we thought. The callow Orioles, with hardly a lick of playoff experience among them, were summarily swept out of the playoffs by the Texas Rangers. That the Rangers went on to win the world championship was of little consolation to the players and their fans, who had to wait a year to prove that last season wasn't a mirage, an anomaly. The first two-thirds of the 2024 campaign led many to believe that the Orioles were the real thing. With newcomers Corbin Burnes and Craig Kimbrel brought in to bring maturity and playoff experience to the young lineup, the Orioles looked poised to repeat as AL East champions, with three players, Burnes, catcher Adley Rutschman and shortstop Gunnar Henderson named to the All-Star starting lineup. However, the club sputtered after the All-Star break, with injuries and poor performances, and landed a wild card slot, finishing second in the division behind the dreaded Yankees. Though the equipment changes from sport to sport, the one thing that all our games have in common is that the postseason of any game is the place where reputations are made and where disappointments can be overcome. And that's how it will be for the Orioles in October. A deep run through these next few weeks will erase the heartache of last fall, A quick exit will trigger questions about who will be here going forward and what happens next. So, for the Birds and their fans, this next month essentially comes down to this question: Will there be a BB gun or a bunny suit under the Christmas tree. The good news is we'll know the answer long before Thanksgiving. And that's how I see it for this week. You can reach us via email with your questions and comments at Sports at Large at gmail.com. And follow me on Threads and X at Sports at Large. Until next week, for all of us here and for producer Spencer Bryant, I'm Milton Kent. History has the power to teach us what to do in the present, but do we actually make good use of that tool? Many events in our recent past might suggest otherwise. American history is complex and full of pain, suffering and missteps. Harvard professor Imani Perry's interdisciplinary work draws from African American studies, legal history and cultural studies to find insights into how we live today. In this talk from the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival, she joins author, historian and Vanderbilt professor Jon Meacham for a conversation about how to reckon with the United States' difficult history. The two touch on the Civil Rights movement, the value of civics education and a collective mindset and what simply getting along with our neighbors can and cannot accomplish. aspenideas.org

Click to receive 10% off your first month with your own licensed professional therapist: betterhelp.com/heartwisdom"These teachings of redemption point to the wondrous possibility that the conflicts that plague the world can be transformed by the nobility of heart." – Jack KornfieldIn this episode, Jack mindfully shares:Real tear-jerking stories of redemption of the human heart If there is a possibility of return from all the conflicts in the world today Contemplating who we push out of our hearts The value of offering compassion and loving kindness Not letting the suffering of the world poison our hearts and turn us against whole groups of people How without compassion and wisdom, we project it out on "them" How Buddhist teachings of impermanence lead to the possibility of redemption The transformative miracle of neuroplasticity Putting down thoughts of blame and turning towards a peaceful heart How good stories can help us break the trance and bring us into the present moment The way Ram Dass helped Jack, Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein work through a period of conflict How the world is full of second chances and redemption is possible"What is the value of the gaze of compassion and loving kindness? It's the consciousness, it's the conscience that leads us to a wiser and more humane life. And with the most terrible dictators and terrorists, the warlords that we see causing so much suffering in this world—we have to do all we can to stop that suffering, but it's also important not to let it poison our hearts, not to let it in any way demonize our hearts to turn against whole groups of people, or give way to despair." – Jack Kornfield"It's not just the grass that keeps growing, your body keeps renewing itself. Everything is in change. Consciousness is a waterfall, a river, an ocean of recreation again and again, inviting new patterns in illumination and the possibility of redemption. You can trust this power and align yourself to it." – Jack KornfieldThis lecture from Jack originally took place for the Spirit Rock Live: Monday Night Dharma Talk and Meditation. When Caressa's 18 year old sister started dating a “brother” from another congregation that was 37, an elder close to the family said that he didn't like the guy and that he was bad news and that they shouldn't be dating. No details were given, but it was foreboding. For the next few years Caressa, just 8 years of age, would face the abuse of that man. In time her story would come out, but unfortunately it would fall on deaf ears in the congregation, despite taking it to the police. A full decade later that “brother” in the congregation, still in good standing, would harm more innocent children and the congregation would disfellowship him. Who knows how many people he may have hurt in all of that time. For Caressa, this life of abuse and manipulation from her family, the cult, and this predator, left her no safe space. At the age of 17 she would ghost her family in search of safety, and a life of her own. This is her story.
