Hey, everyone, I am BACK! I apologize for taking last week off, but ya girl was sick and you didn't wanna listen to my raspy-a$$ voice on an episode. Today's is a little bit different, this is a voice note I captured when I was feeling inspired as HELL earlier this week. As I sat reflecting on just how far I have come not just in this past year, but in my life and the odds I have beaten, I often find myself asking - how? How have I made with my life what it is without faltering in my beliefs? It is because I was taught to be a SURVIVOR. Never were things handed to me, I had to make the best out of the hardest situations. Find the silver lining. Only focus on what I can control, and let go of the rest. Playing the victim only delays and postpones your greatness. How about instead of being stuck in the quick-sand of self-pity, you slow the roll and pick yourself up? You are NOT a victim, you just feel like you are. As 2019 comes to an end, and we are preparing ourselves to enter a new decade, I had a lot of reflecting to do on this past year. I had a lot of ups, sprinkled with a few downs, heartbreaking failures, and unfathomable successes. With all of this ebb and flow, I realized something. Lessons learned and applied to run a successful business are very much applicable to have a successful run at reaching health and fitness goals. "Don't obsess over the end goal." "Have fun while doing it" "If you are doing something that makes sense and lights you up- you won't need motivation" MY most successful months in business were when I stopped butting pressure on sales and just HAD FUN - the same goes for my most successful times in fitness, especially my powerlifting journey. The monster that everyone believes is holding them back from total fitness domination. Metabolism. Is it slow? Is it fast? Is it BROKEN?! No - but it IS so individualized what works for Becky probably won't work for you. Did you know that you DO alter your body's perception of food/energy the more you diet, restrict, and yo-yo? Yep. Every time you yoyo back and forth between diets and up-and-down in body weight, your body becomes more sensitive food reactions and lowers your need for food. AKA the more you yoyo, the less you will be able to eat to see the same results as someone who has done the journey in a more gradual, steady loss. So stop the yoyoing. Start listening and feeling into our bodies. 12 Days of Podmas Day 2! Today's episode is going to hit some hard and you might not want to hear this - but you probably should. Monkey-see Monkey-do is all too real when it comes to our children. They are little sponges who pick up all of our behaviors good or bad. So what do you think is happening to their vulnerable brains and esteems when they see us, their role models, struggling with body-appearance and our relationship with food. If we are constantly going from diet to diet, talking down about our body, saying that certain foods are "bad" or "will make you fat" and that "being fat is bad, then our children are going to adopt that same mentality. They aren't going to want to do childish things like enjoying a trip to the ice cream shop. They are going to think other parents are "bad" for giving their children treats that you forbid at home. You are going to create a child with disorderly eating habits at an age WAY younger than you may expect. I know you are just trying to do what's right and encourage "healthy habits" but mental health is just as important as physical health. Poor mental health around foods WILL create eating disorders in the future which I'm sure you are trying to avoid. We have another incredible interview today! I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend + colleague Mary Codina to discuss all things yin + yang of muscle care. Mary is an RMT in sunny California, as well as an online self-care coach. Together we discussed how working out and muscle care techniques such as foam rolling, stretching, massaging, etc complement each other to relieve our aches + pains. As Mary discovered, some pains won't just go away with massages or post-care techniques, sometimes our aches are caused by muscular imbalances that can only be fixed by STRENGTHENING the weakest link aka working the muscle out! We also discuss how Mary analyzed my pain and stances while lifting, and after only a few recommended tweaks + stretches, I improved my squat speed and stopped getting injured! You've heard it. I've heard it. Heck, we have all even said it! When being asked, " Why do you want to get fit and healthy?" The FIRST thing that comes to mind is, "I want to be slim, toned, like how my body looks (aka have others like how my body looks." But guess what? That mentality of vanity, of external validation, is NOT what is going to get you out of bed on the hard days. It is on those days when motivation is fleeting that you will say, "Well whatever I don't give a sh*t what other people think of me anyway." Which is GREAT - but not if that was your motivation. It is time that we set goals that benefit us as an individual OUTSIDE of vanity how we look that keep us motivated - that keeps us going when we don't have motivation! We need to stand our ground, make life changes coming from a place of love, and see the magic un fold!
