Welcome back to OffRoad InRoads and to the episode following Canadian XCM National Championships. We are back from an impromptu summer break for the podcast and we have a busy fall of racing ahead. To kick September off Haley and Lespy traveled to Whitehorse, Yukon to race at the Canadian XCM National Championships. It was an incredible opportunity to visit the Canadian North and to compete for a maple leaf jersey. It was a great weekend for the team with both Haley and Lespy earning their first Elite National titles.Today's guests also made the trip up to Whitehorse and the both share a similar story, it was an incredible experience and I need to go back! First up on the show we have Ruby West who is an athlete that takes multi-discipline to the next level. XCM Nationals was Ruby's 4th National Championship event of the season, having competed in Road, Track, and Gravel Nationals already this season. Ruby finished up 2nd on the day to go with several other National Champs podiums this season. Ruby grew up racing off-road, with the early part of her career spent on the mountain bike and ‘cross bike. She returns to off-road racing to create the balance that she needs to perform her best on the track. We chat about her experience in the Yukon, how she balances pursuing Olympic dreams on the track with her love of many different kinds of bike racing and what the future may hold for her. Next up, we have Carter Nieuwesteeg on the show, a professional off-road and founder of Anything Goes Event Series (AGES), the company that produces the Fernie Gravel Grind. Carter had this event on his radar for a while and although the day didn't play out as he had hoped, he really enjoyed the experience in the Yukon and is counting the days until he gets back there. We hear about what happened in the race and how he turned it around the next week to finish the season up on a high note at the Revy Fifty. Carter essentially holds two full-time jobs, one being an athlete and the other running events for AGES. Between BWRs, MTB Stage Race double-headers and everything that goes into running AGES, it was a full-on summer for Carter but he wouldn't have it any other way. We chat about that and his thoughts on the off-road scene from the dual-perspective of an athlete and an event organizer. Hardtail's are the next big thing, you heard it here first. Thanks to Maxxis Tires for supporting this podcast and bringing you inside the action with athletes at the biggest off-road races in North America.Enjoy the show.Hosted by: @andrewlespyJoined by: Ruby @ruby__west and Carter @carternieuwesteegProduced by: Bill Schieken @cxhairsNote: Due to technical challenges, this episodes audio quality is not at our typical level, we apologize and will ensure it is improved for upcoming episode. Alexandra Stockwell, MD, is joined by Tricia Brouk for an honest conversation about the often misunderstood topic of menopause. The conversation is inspired by and centered around their journey co-authoring "The Invitation: Vital Conversations About Menopause," their new book published on September 13, 2023. Together, Alexandra and Tricia challenge menopause stereotypes, emphasizing the unique and positive potential for each woman in this phase of life. They address the lack of open discussions about menopause and invite both women and men to join this crucial conversation. Reflecting on their collaboration, they stress the importance of an authentic exploration of menopause's diverse experiences. Ultimately, this episode is an invitation to reshape the narrative around menopause, fostering understanding, empowerment, and connection for women and their partners. Also in this episode: Menopause is an inevitable part of a woman's life, but it doesn't have to be a negative or horrific experience as society sometimes portrays it. Conversations about menopause should be open and inclusive, involving not only women but also their partners and loved ones. Creating a warm and inviting space for discussion is crucial to destigmatize menopause and empower individuals to share their experiences. How interested and responsive men have been about a book on menopause; it's turning out to be an inclusive resource for everyone. Every person going through menopause is the ultimate authority on their own experience. The book "The Invitation: Vital Conversations About Menopause" encourages vital and intimate conversations about menopause, aiming to create connections, expand sexual understanding, and promote a more intimate marriage. Purchase “The Invitation: Vital Conversations About Menopause” here: https://a.co/d/8FpGwZI About “The Invitation: Vital Conversations About Menopause”: Whether you're a woman in the midst of menopause, anticipating it, or close to someone who is, you are invited to join a candid, provocative conversation in a safe space where all experiences are honored. “The Invitation” is an expansive, meaningful dialogue between two friends that unfolds organically as the authors discuss the nuances of their individual experiences, challenge widely held social constructs, and give rise to empowering new perspectives on the menopause paradigm. Chapters explore physical manifestations of menopause, sex and intimacy, marriage through the lens of menopause, and how menopause impacts women at work—a topic for which an expert joins the conversation to enlighten readers about both challenges and solutions for female employees going through menopause. There are also important contributions from three women with diverse backgrounds who share their heartbreaking and poignant personal journeys of feeling abandoned by the medical system and betrayed by their own bodies. "The Invitation” is not about medical treatments or behavioral solutions. It's about creating a collective sisterhood; engaging in open, honest dialogue; and validating and empowering one another to embody a different and more inspiring relationship with menopause.

This week on the show, we're joined by Sam Shepherd, AKA Floating Points. His discography is full of beautiful and strange electronic music—bubbling Buchalas, skittering beats, washes of synthesized sound, and even moody, spacious post-rock. But underneath it all, his love of jazz is clear. In 2021, he teamed with an actual jazz legend: the late Pharoah Sanders, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra for Promises, a single 46-minute composition broken into nine movements. Though the artists were separated by decades in age, their approach is simpatico. Just as Shepherd has moved between genres and styles, so did Pharoah. His early work with John and Alice Coltrane established him as a dynamic, sometimes frighteningly intense sideman, and his first run of records, including 1969's Karma, featuring “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” helped set the stage for what we now call “spiritual jazz.” But Sanders, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, cared very little about what genre you filed his records under. “I just play whatever I feel like playing,” he told The New Yorker. Sanders stayed restless and creative—listen to his playing on Sonny Sharrock's masterful Ask the Ages or his works with Bill Laswell, and you'll hear what we mean. In 1977, he waded into deeply personal waters with the self-titled Pharoah, which will be reissued by Luaka Bop on September 15th. Exploring new age adjacent sounds, funk, and passionate ballads, it's a radical departure from his early work, but perfectly in keeping with Sanders' unpredictable ethos. Likewise, Promises is hardly the “back to basics” late career album you might expect an 80-year-old artist to make. It's its own thing, a meditative sojourn that relies on silence as much as sound. And next week, on September 20th, Floating Points will be joined by past Transmissions guest Shabaka Hutchings, as well as Caribou, Four Tet, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and others for the first-ever staging of Promises live at the Hollywood Bowl. Ahead of that show, Shepherd joined us from his studio to discuss his his years collecting records, making Promises—and we even got him to reveal Pharoah's favorite place to eat in LA. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts, like Drifter's Sympathy, with Emil Amos of Grails, Om, Holy Sons, who will be our guest next week on Transmissions. And of course No Way Out: An Oral History of Sunburned Hand of the Man, curated and produced by J Kelly Davis and presented by Aquarium Drunkard and Talkhouse. Back soon. Next week on the show, Jarvis Taveniere of Woods.

Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
"The mere speculative conviction that it was our interest to be completely virtuous was not sufficient to prevent our slipping, and that the contrary habits must be broken, and good ones acquired and established before we can have any dependence on a steady, uniform rectitude of conduct." - Benjamin Franklin. In today's episode, we have fun interviewing one of the founding fathers of the United States, drafter and signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the first postmaster general of the United States, Benjamin Franklin. The writer, scientist, inventor, diplomat, and one of the leading intellectuals of his time talks about the 13 necessary virtues and how to stay focused on them so we can turn them into habits. Old Testament: Proverbs 7–8 Proverbs 7–8 (Listen) Warning Against the Adulteress 7 My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you;2 keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;3 bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend,5 to keep you from the forbidden1 woman, from the adulteress2 with her smooth words. 6 For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice,7 and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense,8 passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house9 in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness. 10 And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.311 She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home;12 now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait.13 She seizes him and kisses him, and with bold face she says to him,14 “I had to offer sacrifices,4 and today I have paid my vows;15 so now I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.16 I have spread my couch with coverings, colored linens from Egyptian linen;17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love.19 For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey;20 he took a bag of money with him; at full moon he will come home.” 21 With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him.22 All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast523 till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life. 24 And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.25 Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths,26 for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng.27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death. The Blessings of Wisdom 8 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice?2 On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand;3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:4 “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man.5 O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense.6 Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right,7 for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips.8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.9 They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge.10 Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold,11 for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. 12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.14 I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength.15 By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just;16 by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly.617 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.18 Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.19 My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver.20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice,21 granting an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries. 22 “The LORD possessed7 me at the beginning of his work,8 the first of his acts of old.23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth,26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world.27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established9 the fountains of the deep,29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,30 then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his10 delight, rejoicing before him always,31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. 32 “And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways.33 Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.34 Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD,36 but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Footnotes [1] 7:5 Hebrew strange [2] 7:5 Hebrew the foreign woman [3] 7:10 Hebrew guarded in heart [4] 7:14 Hebrew peace offerings [5] 7:22 Probable reading (compare Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac); Hebrew as a chain to discipline a fool [6] 8:16 Most Hebrew manuscripts; many Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint govern the earth [7] 8:22 Or fathered; Septuagint created [8] 8:22 Hebrew way [9] 8:28 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain [10] 8:30 Or daily filled with (ESV) Psalm: Psalm 66 Psalm 66 (Listen) How Awesome Are Your Deeds To the choirmaster. A Song. A Psalm. 66 Shout for joy to God, all the earth;2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.4 All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.” Selah 5 Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.6 He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him,7 who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations— let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah 8 Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard,9 who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip.10 For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried.11 You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs;12 you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance. 13 I will come into your house with burnt offerings; I will perform my vows to you,14 that which my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.15 I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals, with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams; I will make an offering of bulls and goats. Selah 16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.17 I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on1 my tongue.218 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.19 But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me! So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. Jesus Walks on Water 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,2 they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. I Am the Bread of Life 22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven'?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.' As for Literature–to introduce children to literature is to install them in a very rich and glorious kingdom, to bring a continual holiday to their doors, to lay before them a feast exquisitely served. But they must learn to know literature by being familiar with it from the very first. A child's intercourse must always be with good books, the best that we can find. Today I'm talking with an incredible woman, musician, mom and fellow kid's artist, Molly Whuppie. We discuss how she got her name, exposing kids to all the emotions through music and stories, how she got into music, being a mom and more. Molly is a children's music performer in Hawai'i. She has a special place in her heart for traditional folk songs and many of the songs she shares are from her own childhood growing up in Canada. She is fascinated with folk song history and often shares unusual folk and novelty instruments in her live and online performances, such as the musical saw or the jaw harp. She also incorporates folk toys, such as wooden spoon dolls and jig dolls, into her songs. Sometimes she plays a paper bag to demonstrate that music is everywhere if you look for it. Families resonate with her gentle and playful approach to community music.Over the past few years Molly has amassed over 875,000 social media followers by uploading daily videos featuring nostalgic and historical children's songs. She has transcended the "children's music" genre into a sort of " of memories" for all ages. In the comments sections, people share how they play her videos to connect with memory-loss patients, as calming sleep aids, and as tools for managing anxiety attacks. In regards to being a children's music performer, she says, "Children are hardwired to respond to music. You don't need a lot of bells and whistles to earn their attention; you just need to be kind and sing good songs. Some of these kids are going to remember these songs for the rest of their lives, so I have a responsibility to choose the songs wisely.” She has released three singles this past year, all in preparation for her upcoming album releases planned for this fall.Connect with Molly on IG@mollywhuppiemusic ; TikTok ; Facebook ; YouTubeListen on Spotify www.MollyWhuppie.comTo connect with me, Alana Banana, follow on IG @TheAlanaBananaShow or join the Inspired Grownups Private FB Group. 32 “And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways.33 Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.34 Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD,36 but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Footnotes [1] 7:5 Hebrew strange [2] 7:5 Hebrew the foreign woman [3] 7:10 Hebrew guarded in heart [4] 7:14 Hebrew peace offerings [5] 7:22 Probable reading (compare Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac); Hebrew as a chain to discipline a fool [6] 8:16 Most Hebrew manuscripts; many Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint govern the earth [7] 8:22 Or fathered; Septuagint created [8] 8:22 Hebrew way [9] 8:28 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain [10] 8:30 Or daily filled with (ESV) Evening: 1 Corinthians 14:21–40 1 Corinthians 14:21–40 (Listen) 21 In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign1 not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you. Orderly Worship 26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
