A grad student faces a simple choice: write another term paper, or take a summer internship. She takes the internship, gets assigned to sea turtles, and thirty years later she is in the room for some of the most consequential ocean policy agreements ever negotiated. This episode traces that career from the beginning, and it starts with a realization that shapes everything that follows: sea turtles do not read maps. They cross every border humans have drawn, which means protecting them requires countries to cooperate, not compete. Andrew walks through the arc of this career step by step. It starts with an anthropology degree and a grad-school detour into public policy, an internship with an NGO in Washington, D.C., then called the Center for Marine Conservation, and a growing understanding that migratory ocean species force international cooperation whether countries want it or not. From there the story moves through the State Department, more than a decade on international tuna negotiations, and eventually a role at the International Sustainable Seafood Foundation (ISSF). Along the way, Andrew connects the story to his own winding path from marine biology researcher to ocean communications manager, and makes the case that careers in ocean conservation rarely move in a straight line. Tonight's guest, Greg Helton, has been investigating the Sasquatch phenomenon for about 30 years. His first sighting happened in Manitou Springs, Colorado. He was on a cliff face, on the eastern side of Williams Canyon, tossing slate rocks over the edge so he could watch them smash on the ground below. After tossing the third rock, he suddenly noticed a black, furry, humanoid-shaped figure moving to his left. When he focused on the figure, he realized that it was looking back at him. A moment later, he realized it wasn't alone…Greg went on to have many more experiences with Sasquatch after that day. I completely dismissed Five Nights at Freddy's when it hit theaters in 2023. Killer animatronics at a creepy old pizza restaurant? The trailers did absolutely NOTHING for me.Well… apparently I was wrong.In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim finally checks out Five Nights at Freddy's, starring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard—and discovers a horror movie that's far more entertaining, creative, and surprisingly heartfelt than expected.We'll dig into what makes the movie work, including the wonderfully creepy animatronics, the mystery surrounding Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, some familiar actors in unexpected roles, and an excellent young performance from Piper Rubio. We'll also talk about where the movie struggles, why its bizarre premise requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, and whether seasoned horror fans will actually find it scary.And one important disclaimer: I've never played the Five Nights at Freddy's video games.
