Tips to Save Big Money at The Grocery Store - Money Tip Tuesday

When it comes to impulse buying and overspending, one often overlooked area is the grocery store. Fortunately, there are simple strategies you can use to save money on groceries and keep your costs within your budget.  Links: Check out TCU University for more financial education tips and resources! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union   Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal Podcast.  Have you ever looked at your grocery receipt in shock, realizing you spent more than you planned? Groceries can quickly add up, and many people are just as likely to make impulse purchases at the grocery store as they are elsewhere. Being aware of your spending and planning ahead are essential to shopping smart and managing regular expenses.  If you're looking to reduce your grocery bill, here are a few tips to consider:  Serve Simple Meals: Dinner doesn't have to be complicated. Large meals with multiple sides and desserts can require significant prep work and increase costs over time. Consider simpler meal options like BLTs, big salads, egg sandwiches, or quiches. You don't need to prepare an elaborate feast every night; with a little creativity, you can enjoy satisfying meals without the extra effort and expense. This approach may also help reduce food waste if you or your family can't finish leftovers.  Pay with Cash: This is a useful strategy for those who stick to a budget. If you know how much you can spend on groceries each week, bring that exact amount in cash and avoid exceeding it. This way, overspending becomes impossible. If you prefer not to use cash, consider setting a spending limit on your credit or debit card.  Try Delivery or Pickup Services: The growing popularity of grocery pickup and delivery services offers more than just convenience; these options can help you cut back on spending. Shopping online decreases the likelihood of impulse purchases. When you walk through the store aisles, you're more likely to encounter items you didn't plan to buy and toss them into your cart. Instead, opt for online shopping, scheduling a pickup or delivery. While many grocers may charge a small service fee, it could be insignificant compared to the money you save by avoiding impulsive buys. Often, the minor service charge is worth the savings. Pay Attention to Sales: Smart shoppers always keep an eye out for sales, especially on meats, which can help reduce your grocery bill. Take note of when your favorite items go on sale and track their sales cycles to plan your purchases in advance. With some discipline, you'll find that the savings add up over time. Consider Buying Generic: Generic items are often cheaper than their brand-name counterparts. By switching some or all of your items to generic brands, you could see significant savings. Some grocery stores offer rewards programs that provide money back when you purchase their store brands. Not only are you buying cheaper items, but you're also getting a little something back for your purchases—an extra win for your wallet!  Groceries are a necessary expense in our budgets, but how much we spend can vary widely. With some planning, discipline, and creativity, you can keep this essential expense from getting out of control.  If there are any other tips or topics you'd like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org. We've all heard the clichés: focus on what you can control, embrace the pain not the suffering, fight for what you want. Easy to dismiss, right? But the truth is, those sayings stick around for a reason. They hold the kind of wisdom that can change how you approach life, work, and even setbacks. What often gets missed is that clichés aren't about perfection, they're about perspective. They remind you that regret comes from the chances you didn't take, that discipline lasts longer than motivation, and that consistency matters more than bursts of effort. It's not about chasing outcomes—it's about showing up, day after day, for the things that matter most. One question that flips the script: How do I minimize future regrets? Suddenly, clichés like “control what you can” or “give it your all” stop sounding tired and start feeling urgent. They're not just empty lines, they're the compass for your decisions. When you finally pay attention to the advice you've heard a thousand times, life feels lighter, setbacks feel smaller, and your goals feel closer. Pay Attention--The Critical Role of Observation at Work

Crina and Kirsten Get to Work

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2025 41:30

In the fast-paced world of work, the simple act of observation is often overlooked—yet it offers a real and measurable edge. Research shows that the ability to “read the room,” such as recognizing emotions in others' faces and voices, provides valuable insight into unspoken dynamics like mood shifts, alliances, or resistance.  Observation creates the feeling of being seen and heard—for both the observer and those around them. Observation requires not focusing cognitively, but noticing yourself, others, and the environment in real time, with awareness and intention. Writer David Brooks refers to particularly attentive individuals as “illuminators”—those who are persistently curious about others and help people feel truly understood. In contrast, “diminishers” are too self-absorbed to notice what's happening around them. Despite our good intentions, there are forces that work against our ability to observe. Power, for instance, has been shown to reduce perspective-taking and awareness of others. To combat this, leaders and people in power should deliberately switch into “observer mode,” especially in rooms where power dynamics are unequal. Other barriers include our negativity bias (we over-focusing on flaws), inattentional blindness (we miss what's routine or familiar), and our psychological state (stress and urgency diminish our ability to notice others' needs). There are practical, field-tested strategies to restore and strengthen observational power. Techniques include strategies listing “three good things” noticed during the day, using two-column notes (content vs. process), timeboxed round-robins to ensure equal airtime, and asking diagnostic questions like “What are we not seeing?” or “How could this fail?” Silent writing before group discussions helps quieter observers contribute, while brief reflective summaries during meetings—e.g., “Here's what I'm hearing; what did I miss?”—can flush out hidden disagreement and signal active listening. Finally, leaders should watch out for “power fog.” When those in charge speak with certainty, it's critical to double-check assumptions and seek out dissenting or overlooked perspectives.  Observation is a particularly crucial leadership tool—but it is important for all of us - and as Kirsten says, observation is surprisingly entertaining, often revealing, and always worth slowing down for. Fighting on the internet is nothing new. But as our social media becomes more algorithmically siloed, the outrage machines are reshaping our policy outcomes in very real ways. Chris Vanderveen is an investigative reporter for 9News and has seen firsthand how online discourse is getting more divisive and subjective — especially when it comes to news coverage of crime. He joins host Bree Davies to talk about some recent stories he's covered, why he engages with anonymous commenters on X.com, and how all the outrage is impacting laws and policy-making in Colorado. What do you think about online outrage in Denver right now? Text or leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: 720-500-5418 Here's one of Chris' X threads about the Denver bus stabbings, and his post about getting offline.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. There's a dust up between the WI Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection and the states livestock marketing yards, dealers and truckers. The challenge is over proposed increases on fees charged to these agribusinesses for licenses granted and oversight of their activities. Pam Jahnke finds out about the conflict from Curt Larson, President and CEO of the Equity Livestock Cooperative Sales Association. Larson says some fees are going up by more than 1600%. He says this is not only extreme, it's unjustified. Larson points out that any escalation in fees must be directly passed to the producers who use the services. He says that because many of the functions of these licenses are about traceability, the expense should be shared by more than just producers.A warmer weekend is on the way for Wisconsin. Stu Muck says once the fog burns off, temperatures will easily move into the 80's with just a little rain on the way.Silage harvest is underway and it's important to make notes on what you're seeing. Dean Ebert from Helena Agri tells Pam Jahnke that he checks everything from tip fill to leaf disease as the harvest unfolds. He also notes that they've finally started to see prices for 2026 inputs, but it's going to require a very sharp pencil. Ebert says planning sooner before later may really benefit growers. John Umhoeffer, executive director of the WI Cheesemakers Association says last month, workers at W&W Dairy went on strike after new ownership required employees to verify their immigration status through E-Verify. John explains that E-Verify is a national program required for dairy plants that make products for the government. But he says the situation is highlighting a larger issue: America’s immigration system and what it means for the future of food production. Bow season for deer is here and it sparks a lot of excitement among Wisconsin residents as one of the favorite fall past times. Although the season brings joy to many it also creates dangers. Ben Jarboe find out about this years hunt from DNR’s deer program specialist Jeff Pritzl is here to give a look at where deer hunters may have the most luck, but first he gives a look into some safety considerations to make sure everyone has an enjoyable hunt. He also says that we can expect above average antler growth from bucks this year due to the mild winter. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
