“Hello Breakers, it’s Jalen again. In our last episode, we took a look at the Active Citizen Continuum. The last stage of the continuum is to become an Active Citizen, where community becomes a priority in values and life choices. I hope to demystify this stage by telling you what it means to me. The way I see it, Active Citizenship is represented as a continuum because it doesn’t necessarily have an end. Once you reach this final stage, you have only reached an end in thought but not in action. When I say end in thought, I mean that you have finally come to a point of understanding where community has become a priority in your values and life choices. The thing is, even if you do, the actions you take on a daily basis may not be representative of this. I believe it’s an on-going process where your ability or availability to live out your values changes; suffering from burnout is very real. The actions people take to support their community is limited to their capacity. Your Active Citizenship has to meet you where you’re at. I hope to help you discover the path best suited for you. Until then, catch ya next time!”
“Hello Breakers, it’s Jalen again. Today’s episode, I want to cover the core framework of Active Citizenship. To understand Alternative Breaks, we must first understand the Active Citizen Continuum. It may be difficult to wrap your mind around at first, but for now I just want to teach the simple concept that Active Citizenship is an on-going process. Each of the four citizenship stages has their own level of intention with their engagement. This process is unique for everyone and so too is the reason a person finds themselves at one of these particular stages. Everyone in a community engages with it in some way regardless of their intent. As you become more thoughtful with the way you interact with your community, you progress in your citizenship. It is important to understand that there isn’t just one act or achievement that makes you an active citizen. It isn’t something you can obtain and just be done with. It is a state of mind you have and a way of being that you nurture. As we continue on our journey together, we’ll dive deeper into how to manage your Active Citizenship. Thanks—catch ya next time.”
“Hello Breakers, and welcome to our first virtual Alternative Breaks semester. My name is Jalen and I’ll be your host. It is my pleasure to welcome back the program and although the delivery has changed, our vision has not--which is to prepare students for lives of Active Citizenship. Traditionally, we would offer service learning trips but of course, the global pandemic won’t allow us to. Regardless, we will continue to shape our vision by the education of Active Citizenship and sustainable service. We hope to have some engaging activities for you all too, such as thought provoking discussions and fun challenges for you to complete in the comfort of your home. No matter the circumstance or limitations we face, our program’s vision moves us forward. In spite of being a part, we will aim to build community to create the change we seek. So, let’s continue growing together and chasing that vision. Thanks—catch ya next time.”

Fourth Base (50:29 - 1:06:16) – Ryan is an old man, and Tom has 5 key reasons that make him an old man.

Only Tom and Ryan for this episode, as Kristian is being a good family man. Obviously, you can't bring up scandals without bringing up the Patriots. Third Base (30:32 - 40:16): Ryan hates going to College Football games, so Tom and him discuss why it can be dreadful experience. Fourth Base (40:16 - 1:05:19): Ok Boomer (Esiason). Check out this week's episode of WebOddities!
In the 5th Episode special of the Season, the guys do the show LIVE, and are met with special co-host Hezekiah. This episode only featured 3 bases due to an audio failure due to Tom's poor time management. However, it was STILL LOADED with Ryan's ridiculous takes. Base 1: 1:50, the guys break into an NFL deep dive, and Ryan comes locked and loaded with controversial takes about the NFL, and the mediocre Detroit Lions. Base 2: 26:14, the guys get into a discussion about Michigan Football, and Joe Klatt's recent discussion about Jim Harbaugh on the Colin Cowherd show, it doesn't end well. Base 3: 38:00, we get back into discussing the NBA. This ends up leading into an angry discussion about LCA and its pretzels.
Hana, Ashlee and Becca talk about their visit to Eastern Market Detroit and the gentrification in the district!
Special guest Aman (NBA superfan), joins Ryan, Tom and Kristian in the most action packed show of the series so far!!! 1st Base: 1:42, the guys start off the show with a NBA preview, and a deep dive into the most controversial topic in sports right now: The NBA and China. 2nd Base: 27:55, things get analytical when the guys start discussing the MLB playoffs. Then proceed to break the hearts of many Detroit Tigers fans as they discuss how good the Detroit Tigers would be today if they had kept their star players instead of entering a massive rebuild. 3rd Base: 52:28, things get devastating when Ryan discusses his dating life once again... to no surprise things go south. Home Run/4th Base: 59:10, Did penalties really cost the lions the game?? Be warned: THIS TOPIC GOT HEATED>
An introduction to the Zilchair Show as I discuss capitalism and money and their connections to my college life.
In this Episode, Ryan, Tom and Kristian discuss the NFL regular season, and touch on the MLB postseason. Tom finally shares a story about his personal life, and Ryan goes through what in his mind when he's sleeping. 1:28 - 18:05 : On First Base, the crew touches on Michigan Football, and has a discussion on what teams are acceptable to represent in public. Kristian gives his NFL game of the week where obviously Ryan disagrees with everyone, and says it will be a blowout. 18:05 - 26:36 : On Second Base, we finally talk about Baseball! We discuss the Minnesota Twins postseason record, and you know bad records can't be brought up without mentioning Detroit sports teams. The crew also discusses which teams could go all the way. 26:36 - 36:13 : On Third Base, Tom has an all time bad Millennial morning, where nothing goes his way. He also touches on an encounter with a long lost friend that caused the bad morning. 36:13 - 44:18 : We are convinced Ryan has been taking drugs before sleeping, as is shown by the dreams he has. Tom also has a crazy dream involving a controversial UFC fighter and a household pet.
A packed show, where we venture into dating yet again, talk about flag football fantasy teams, and Ryan brings up a promise that Tom has not yet fulfilled. 1:28 - 12:17 : Kristian is caught up with Ryan's double date saga, and the crew talks about potential ways to make Tom and Ryan's double date better, or possibly ruining it to give us good content for the pod. 12:17 - 27:57 : Tom hates GEICO commercials, more specifically the one that has no concept of what kind of a player Jerome Bettis was. This brings up the debate of our hypothetical flag football team with NFL Stars, new and old, with the crew as captains. 27:57 - 37:49 : Ryan brings up a story of an unfulfilled promise that has his friends questioning him, and brings up something that Tom promised to do three years ago. Will Tom ever finish it?? Only Tom knows, and he is still unsure. 37:49 - 50:00 : More of Ryan's dating life! There are some really good tips in here for anyone who is on their first date: Do the opposite of what Ryan did. I question if Ryan secretly does this stuff for content on the Pod.

Ryan and Tom introduce the world to the Around the Bases podcast, and explain how the format of the show will work. Topics this week include Michigan Football troubles, Contenders and Pretenders in the NFL, a follow up on Ryan's dating life, and a spooky Friday the 13th story.
