In this special two-part Detroit is Different episode, we dive into Forging Identity: The Story of Carlos Nielbock with Dr. Paul J. Draus, a University of Michigan-Dearborn sociology professor whose Detroit journey began back in 2005. “We first met Carlos through his creations,” Draus recalls, describing towering windmills and ornate gates built from salvaged materials on Detroit's east side that sparked a friendship and a story worth telling. This episode traces Draus's own path from Chicago to Wyoming to New York to Dayton, and ultimately to Detroit, where community partnerships led him to Carlos—an artist, a craftsman, and a character whose life mirrors Detroit's own transformation. Draus shares how Carlos, a Black German immigrant raised in Europe, navigated identity, racism, and the post-industrial city with resilience and creativity. “It's a mock-heroic narrative, almost like a Don Quixote story,” Draus explains, reflecting on Carlos's work turning Detroit's discarded industrial relics into symbols of hope and sustainability. From scrapping in junkyards to preserving historical architecture, Carlos's story challenges notions of identity, place, and revitalization in Detroit. As Draus puts it, “There's something in each of us that is not reducible to environment or genes,” and Carlos embodies that beautifully. The book's reception has been heartfelt, with community members like Mama Myrtle saying it “brought her to tears.” It's a Detroit story with global resonance, touching on art, sociology, community, and courage. Tune in to learn how this story came to life and why it matters now more than ever. The federal government hiked interested rates this week days after some banks have failed in the US. The failure has shocked the America finical system, making us question our banking relationship. How does the closing of certain banks affect the economy and what is being done about it to keep the system working? Will it affect other banks worldwide? Will the rate hike make other banks fail? Is our money safe at the bank and how does inflation factor into this situation? The things we love? Is it the car or our phone? So what does it mean to love something? I am not talking about a person. I am talking about an item, an object or a brand. My guest on the show has been researching how we love for over 30 years. Our show today is the first recording in our streamlined format, and it makes the show more compact. I hope you enjoy it. The conversation is in 2 parts. The first part will be audio, and the second will be on our YouTube channel. Dr Aaron Ahuvia is the Czarnecki Endowed Professor of Marketing at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the world's leading expert on brand love. And that all started with research work in dating services. He and a colleague were looking at how dating apps work. But before exploring the project, they needed to understand love, which was the start of a 30-year adventure. His work on brand love has been recognized not just in academia but also in industry. In 2019 he received the Stetik Group Brand Relationship Award for research that has influenced business practice. Before all of this Aaron, is a philosopher, and as you will hear in our conversation, semantics is everything. We cover his journey through the five questions and what it takes for him to live a good life. In part 2 of our conversation on TouTube, we explore the ideas behind loving brands and objects. We explore some of the pitfalls that AI may open when coming to that bonding with inanimate things because they respond to us. Why is it that when we really like an object, brand or activity, we say that we ‘love' it? How can we fall in love with brands, things and experiences?I'm an Apple fanboy, I love my Peloton bike, and given the time of year, it would be remiss of me not to mention how much I really like Christmas markets in Germany. What's happening when I feel that way? On the face of it, this doesn't exactly make much sense. Fortunately, it's something my guest can help us with. Based at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Aaron Ahuvia is a Consumer psychologist & marketing professor who studies how we come to love things that aren't people. Aaron's book “The Things We Love: How our Passions Connect Us and Make us who we are” shows that we are far less “rational” than we think when it comes to our possessions and hobbies. In fact, we have passionate relationships with the things we love, and these relationships are driven by influences deep within our culture and biology. Some of our passions are sudden, obsessive, and fleeting; others are devoted and lifelong affairs. Some turn dark: we become hoarders or would prefer to destroy certain objects rather than let anyone else own them. And as technology improves, becoming increasingly addictive, one wonders: might our lives become so dominated by our emotional ties to things that we lose interest in other people? You're going to — pun fully intended — love this episode. “Never be afraid to accept your vocation. Because God will supply what we need.” Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. David Pellican are joined by Fr. Matthew Hood. Together they discuss Fr. Matt's journey from asking big questions about the Faith in high school to being ordained a priest. After spending eight years in seminary, Fr. Matt has served the Archdiocese of Detroit in parish and school ministry. He offers advice for men discerning: “If God has given you even the smallest desire for the priesthood, pursue it. That doesn't happen often.” Show Notes: (00:03) Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. David Pellican welcome us to this episode of Men of the Hearts. This month's guest is Fr. Matthew Hood, the chaplain for Detroit Catholic Campus Ministry which serves Wayne State University and the University of Michigan – Dearborn as well as the surrounding campuses. He shares about his summer abroad in Brazil on a mission trip with FOCUS, Fellowship of Catholic University Students. (10:40) The Costco King: the hosts and Fr. Matt play a game related to opinions about Costco. Fr. Craig announces the winner of the competition will be announced at the end of the episode. (16:33) Fr. Matt's vocation story: In high school, Fr. Matt found himself asking many big questions about faith while attending St. Joseph Parish in Lake Orion. He found that the Catholic Church offered the answers to every question he proposed in a more profound manner, allowing him to trust and surrender. He began to desire not just to know God but also to develop a relationship with Him. Spending time in the local Eucharistic Adoration chapel is where he first felt a desire for the priesthood. (20:15) While before the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration, Fr. Matt began praying with Scripture, particularly the passage of Jesus calling the disciples on the Sea of Galilee in which he felt the Lord telling him “To follow Him, throw down my nets, put out into the deep” as a priest. But he pushed the thought to the side. (25:51) From questions to his vocation: Fr. Matt explains in more detail the journey from asking questions to considering the priesthood. In encountering Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, he felt the Lord kept placing the call to the priesthood on his heart. Fr. Matt enrolled at Central Michigan University his freshmen year and participated in Catholic Campus Ministry which helped to further confirm his vocation to the priesthood. (31:34) The process of entering seminary: joy, friendship, and fraternity played a pivotal role for Fr. Matt. He applied and was accepted to the seminary, where he found the first year challenging. He was tempted to feel “I'm not holy enough, I'm not worthy enough.” He was challenged by doubts and an experience of feeling undeserving of the priesthood. (43:25) Life as a priest: The priests talk about Fr. Matt's experience of working at Divine Child parish and school. He then describes how he lives out his priesthood walking with college students, including hosting events for exploring the Faith and deepening one's conversion. Fr. Matt recommends finding a priest as a spiritual director to help guide a man considering a vocation to the priesthood. “What might be the next step?” They discuss key advice for how to discern if God is calling a man to the priesthood. “God speaks to us in silence. If there is a small desire for priesthood, pay attention to it, have courage, don't be afraid, and seek it.” Fr. Matt closes the episode in prayer.

As another class of Gen-Z graduates, they are taking one more step into adulthood. But still, our nation is divided by racial violence, economic inequality and disappearing reproductive rights. For this reason, The Takeaway takes a Deep Dive into Gen-Z: Who are they and what do they want? To give us a better idea we talked to Cathy Cohen, the David and Mary Winton Green Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago and Philip N. Cohen, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Sociology at The University of Maryland. Cathy Cohen is the principal investigator and founder of the GenForward Survey. One of the biggest concerns for Gen-Z is economic security. As the older part of this cohort enters the workforce we discussed what work they want to do as well as what work should do for them. We speak with 20-year-old Parker Lacewell who's facing these questions as well as Terry Nguyen, a reporter for The Goods at Vox who covers consumer and internet trends, and technology. We also looked into how Gen-Z utilizes technology to do everything from organizing to quitting their jobs. We spoke with Pamela Aronson, Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn about what their use of technology tells us about their hopes for the future. WNYC's Radio Rookies Rainier Harris and Folashade Olatunde joined to discuss their concerns for their generation. Activist, strategist, influencer and founder of the Gen Z Girl Gang, Deja Foxx told us how her cohort uses the power of social media to affect change in the world. And, we had the privilege of listening in on a conversation between Marley Dias, founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks and her Mom, Janice Johnson Dias, author of Parent Like It Matters. They discussed everything from college, to the massacre in Buffalo to the future of reproductive rights.
